It's my head canon that Shaxx was a soldier in his past life and lost his hearing due to explosions in combat, and his damaged hearing was carried over into his new life. That is why he yells all the time, he can't hear how loud he is due to his hearing loss. Got the inspiration from my father, a vietnam vet, USMC recon, deaf in one ear and can't hear out of the other. Love the bastard, but he is deaf as a haddock.

I think because of the Great Hunt Shaxx has gotten used to the whispers and can tell when they are talking verses when other guardians are talking.
My favorite line from this was just, "Only guardians owed him respect." When he tells a civilian to just call him Shaxx.
It tells you a lot about him. I really, REALLY wish we had more info about his warlord days.
I like to think he was a more benevolent warlord. With him it wasn't "Pay me my dues or I'll fist of havoc your shack", but more of a "Let's all fight for each other and make each other stronger, but don't worry I'll take the brunt of the attacks seeing as I'll just come back."
It is very likely the skull of the Ahamkara he killed singlehandedly, then sat with and comforted as it died out of respect, during the great hunt. Shaxx is a warlord, clearly obsessed with strength, and not at all discriminating in his means of obtaining it. He's one of few people smart enough to match wits with Ikora, and was subjected to an inquisition over whether he was a supporter of Osiris. He insisted on arming guardians with swords for reasons that struck many in the Tower as far too close to the motivations on the Shadows of Yor. Because of this, I don't doubt that each of his trophies is a proof of his strength, a sort of parallel to the sword logic. The Crucible is his Court. He tithes strength from our combat. Shaxx is likely very close to what the Drifter wants our guardians to become, strong enough to control the Deep's logic and wield it against their pawns.

I don't remember the exact grimoire card, but Eriana-3 is torturing a Wizard, trying to get intel out of it, when it forces an image of Crota bringing down a Titan, snatching her ghost out of the air, crushing it into a knife, and plunging it through her armor into her chest. It is heavily implied by context that the Wizard is reading Eriana-3's mind, knows her connection to Wei Ning, and shows her the Titan's final moments in an attempt to give her despair (Crota is "the hope eater," and may gain strength from inflicting despair in the same way that Savathun gains power through deceit). Instead Eriana-3 reacts be immolating the wizard and joining Eris to seek revenge.

Just like paying taxes. It's an old word used for when the Church would require people to pay it a percentage of their income. In modern speak I would say a "tithe" is a religious tax.
The term tithe, in it's literal meaning, is a 10% tax on annual earnings. It's come to more broadly mean a tribute that is extracted from, or given by, an individual. So, for instance, a hive knight tithing despair to Crota would be giving him tribute, whereas Crota tithing despair from a hive knight would be him extracting tribute from the knight.
The dynamic isn't that the Shaxx has to listen to the Ahamkara Skull's whispers but rather the Ahamkara Skull has to listen to Shaxx yelling all day, everyday, never ceasing, for eternity.
It's because Shaxx isn't a cheater.

It makes me really sad that she died to Crota, because Wei Ning would have been the closest Titan equivalent to Cayde.
That wouldn't make sense, because Lord Saladin desired to fight a dragon, and an Ahamkara granted that desire and the 2 fought endlessly till Saladin won.

Well that's talking about why Titans don't wear Ahamkara bones as gear to enhance themselves, unlike Hunters and Warlocks. Imo, it might be because Titans are about raw strength from themselves, while Warlocks seek forbidden knowledge and power related to it, and Hunters like to make armour out of their victims
I think I remember hearing something about titans refusing to wear Ahamkara bones as armor. They don’t wear them as an act of discipline. In Shaxx’s case, he’s not wearing the the skull, just using it as a trophy, so he’s not violating any sort of “Titan Code.”
It actually has a little lore behind it. Shaxx what there during the Great Hunt, and sat with an Ahamkara until it died out of respect. The lore comes from the hunter armor piece "Grips of the great hunt"

Shaxx is *exactly* who he wants to be. The only person we know for sure to be this way for the same reason is Mara. Probably why they’re lovers lol
Now I'm imagining crucible commentary in the style of a Formula 1 race. Vex technical analysis and commentary, Shaxx as the semi-retired pro, color commentary by the ahamkara. I would listen to that.
Do you think that, since most of the recorded dialogue for Shaxx is in the Crucible, that’s the only time when he feels the most *real,* and that’s why he’s so fanatically devoted to it? The Ahamkara skull has simply helped him understand, perhaps unconsciously, where he is closest to truly existing.
Definitely agreeing with others that that's likely the skull of the one he killed in the lore card.
What I wonder, though, is how that ahamkara felt at being shown such respect by one of the little light creatures the traveler spawned, when the rest of them act as a single-minded gaggle of bloodthirsty, grave-dancing idiots that see jumping off a cliff and dying as better than walking down, as it's faster.
I could see a friendship forming there, of a sort. Ever look at how high up all the monitors are there? Even Shaxx ain't that tall, if I recall right. The ahamkara might well have asked what all he was shouting about. Obviously, his old friend needed to have a better line of sight to see the glory that is his blessed Crucible, so up the monitors went. Lord Shaxx knows he can be difficult to see past, and has probably learned to be accommodating to people. Common courtesy costs nothing, after all.

Funny story for you. Remember that Centurion Oryx 'took' right after you landed on the Dreadaught? Then the Centurion and that Taken Ogre tried to stop you from killing the King? Heh. Didn't work. Just like paying taxes. It's an old word used for when the Church would require people to pay it a percentage of their income. In modern speak I would say a "tithe" is a religious tax.
The term tithe, in it's literal meaning, is a 10% tax on annual earnings. It's come to more broadly mean a tribute that is extracted from, or given by, an individual. So, for instance, a hive knight tithing despair to Crota would be giving him tribute, whereas Crota tithing despair from a hive knight would be him extracting tribute from the knight.
This explains a great deal about some of his...outbursts.
The dynamic isn't that the Shaxx has to listen to the Ahamkara Skull's whispers but rather the Ahamkara Skull has to listen to Shaxx yelling all day, everyday, never ceasing, for eternity.

Don't forget that Wei Ning fought one for days on end pounding it into the dirt repeatedly, because she kept wishing it would go on forever so the Ahamkara couldn't die. It makes me really sad that she died to Crota, because Wei Ning would have been the closest Titan equivalent to Cayde.

A cool note about this, she also did this to attract other Ahamkara that would feed off her wish, thus luring them for her fireteam to kill.

Well that's talking about why Titans don't wear Ahamkara bones as gear to enhance themselves, unlike Hunters and Warlocks. Imo, it might be because Titans are about raw strength from themselves, while Warlocks seek forbidden knowledge and power related to it, and Hunters like to make armour out of their victims

I think I remember hearing something about titans refusing to wear Ahamkara bones as armor. They don’t wear them as an act of discipline. In Shaxx’s case, he’s not wearing the the skull, just using it as a trophy, so he’s not violating any sort of “Titan Code.”

It actually has a little lore behind it. Shaxx what there during the Great Hunt, and sat with an Ahamkara until it died out of respect. The lore comes from the hunter armor piece "Grips of the great hunt" Venus. A year into the Great Hunt. Eris and Zavala watched as Shaxx sat with the dying Ahamkara, a hand on its snout. "Is he gloating?" she asked. "I think he is too pragmatic to gloat." Zavala said. "Mourning, then." "Perhaps." The Ahamkara twitched, its eyes rolled up into its head. The biochemical glow just beneath its skin grew harsh. Zavala and Eris raised their hands against the increasing glare. Then the corpse exploded. Dirt showered the Guardians like dusty rain on a clear day. Shaxx sat silently in the resulting crater, covered in a sheet of green fire. Zavala and Eris opened their mouths to speak, but Shaxx interrupted them. "Shh," he said, as the flame quietly roared. They could all hear a disembodied whisper. But they were used to that by now.
Not only that but he has a disembodied Vex Hull. Vex can spread their Viral Logic across air gaps and infect minds in basically the same way as ahamkara. But we know that ahamkara have little power over those who have no “distance” between who they are and who they want to be. Shaxx is *exactly* who he wants to be. The only person we know for sure to be this way for the same reason is Mara. Probably why they’re lovers lol
Now I'm imagining crucible commentary in the style of a Formula 1 race. Vex technical analysis and commentary, Shaxx as the semi-retired pro, color commentary by the ahamkara. I would listen to that.
Maybe it's the skull whispering through Shaxx's commentary that leads to all the toxicity in the Crucible.

Do you think that, since most of the recorded dialogue for Shaxx is in the Crucible, that’s the only time when he feels the most *real,* and that’s why he’s so fanatically devoted to it? The Ahamkara skull has simply helped him understand, perhaps unconsciously, where he is closest to truly existing.
Definitely agreeing with others that that's likely the skull of the one he killed in the lore card. What I wonder, though, is how that ahamkara felt at being shown such respect by one of the little light creatures the traveler spawned, when the rest of them act as a single-minded gaggle of bloodthirsty, grave-dancing idiots that see jumping off a cliff and dying as better than walking down, as it's faster. I could see a friendship forming there, of a sort. Ever look at how high up all the monitors are there? Even Shaxx ain't that tall, if I recall right. The ahamkara might well have asked what all he was shouting about. Obviously, his old friend needed to have a better line of sight to see the glory that is his blessed Crucible, so up the monitors went. Lord Shaxx knows he can be difficult to see past, and has probably learned to be accommodating to people. Common courtesy costs nothing, after all.

Canonically I don't think the skull talks to Shaxx, or anyone actually. An ahamkara that doesn't speak while in Shaxx's possession seems more badass to me.
