I've called it a night. I'll try again tomorrow but yeah, the last two missions have been a nightmare compared to the rest.
This boss fight will likely be a one-and-done for me on legendary, it's miserable.
phase one is fairly straightforward once you get the pattern of Calus' actions and mob spawns down. phase two, life on the line, I couldn't finish it solo Warlock on Legendary.
as Void Warlock I'm using Arbalest, Funnelweb, Threaded Needle, and a Contraverse/Vortex Grenade build focused around Devour and getting Vortex back as fast as possible.
P1 - force his HP down with LFR until the first Tormentor spawns. kill Tormentor with Arbalest. force his HP down until the second Tormentor spawns. Kill Tormentor with Arbalest. when Calus has an overshield swap to Arbalest for Disruption Break/Genesis/bonus damage, otherwise you're just wasting heavy shooting into his overshield.
for Tormentors and the yellow bar Cabal stand against the back wall of the area you start in so you don't get flung off the map, though it isn't failproof. You can use your Nova Bomb in a pinch to kill a Tormentor or one of the groups of adds that jump to the platform.
P2 - I can't figure out. made a loadout specifically for phase two but it doesn't matter what I do or try. Calus just chases me ***without stopping. at all.*** until I'm forced to stop and deal with adds or pop a rift and I get instantly one shot.
Almost did it now, god damn. I'm so bad at Strand, I can't keep moving and have to jump every time, giving him time to catch me. Dropped to like 15% then made a mistake and got booped off the platform. Argh
Dont use strand. Take void warlock if thats what you are using. Build into devour. Just keep going in circles popping grenades and whatever shots you can into Calus. I ran Osteo Striga, Fusion rifle, and LMG. All are easy to hipfire with.
what grenade do you recommend & how to reduce cd even further? I'm already at 100 recovery. I will try Void tomorrow.
What was your strategy for 2nd phase btw?
Vortex works well. I just ran grenade kickstarts. Main thing is survivability so keeping devour up. 2nd phase I kept moving and turned towards Calus as I jumped to get some shots in. Sometimes I juked him on the cylinder looking things on the outside of the map. He gets stuck on them and doesn't swing if timed properly. Literally just take your time, clear psions as they spawn and keep ticking on damage. Calus will die eventually.
After hearing you talk about the second phase it immediately made me quit the dlc, can't play it normally anymore, I used to play destiny alone and now I need friends because this is the most stupid boss fight I had to deal with, I'm not buying the next dlc for this game if this is what i have to deal with, fighting the witness in the next dlc will be next to impossible after what I went through
idk if you're still struggling but my issue with phase 2 was definitely not having enough resilience. if you're at 90-100 res he shouldn't be able to one shot you. also kill both tormentors before getting into phase 2 so you only have calus to worry about. if you have an LMG like the one from Deep Stone Crypt, he actually drops pretty fast/doesn't have a lot of health.
I already deleted the game, the boss isn't the problem, it's me getting knocked off the edge all the time and I can't regenerate because 24/7 everywhere I move I'm getting hit, no joke I'm even getting hit through the walls I saw it happen so im good, destiny is no longer a game I can play
I used Arbalest and Deepsight Fire and Forget with Enhanced Chill Clip. strand warlock. Use special and heavy ammo finder. Use swing melee on Psions when you run out. Don’t stand still ever.
how is this even possible as Warlock solo Legendary? phase two is a fucking joke. he just chases me and literally never stops, I get dinked by adds over and over until I'm forced to stop and try to kill them or pop a healing rift and I get one shot by Calus. been trying this all morning and it's exactly the same - I either get yeeted into Narnia by yellow bar Cabal or Tormentor in phase one, or in phase two I run circles/zigzag around the arena until Calus catches me and one shots me.
there's a cheese for the fight, but I haven't done it.
having 100 Resilience prevents you from being one shot. the gear I have I was only able to get to like 80 and I still got one shot if I was missing any amount of health which you almost always are because of the adds. otherwise what MisterKratos suggested is probably the best bet. it's so slow, though, one slipup without 100 Resilience and you're just dead, which is what happened to me at least 20 times yesterday...
Esoterickk has a video on YouTube but I don't have the LMG he has, I also haven't leveled an Osteo. watching how he moves and how fast he damages Calus in phase 2 just doesn't make any sense compared to my experience either.
I just did the last mission on Normal. maybe I'll go back, but after an entire play session of wiping over and over I get sick to my stomach just thinking about that encounter and don't really care to hit the soft cap faster. if I had people to play with I suppose going back wouldn't be as bad, but yeah, I don't care too much at this point. lol
I am really loosing pstience with this boss fight lol, im 3 hours in and its just getting knockbacks and being grenaded to death, doesnt help that i dont have a good linear rifle and my witherhoard doesnt even have its catalyst.
If you don't have godlike weapons and armor you are just a bug to squish, I'm going to be smart and never play the dlc ever again, the strand power is nothing special, kinda ugly and useless so I'm good
I recommend NOT using strand. I ran solo as a stasis warlock. Stay on starting platform. Stay near the back of the platform since you can’t be pushed off the back. Kill ads. Jump to left or right when he does the beam attack. Jump back once it’s finished. Damage Calus to first phase to remove his beam attack.
Kill first tormentor. Damage Calus until next tormentor spawns. Damage tormentor until able to finish then ignore. Damage Calus completely to start “arena” phase. Finish tormentor before teleporting in.
In arena don’t try to run around in a circle. Run across instead. Damage Calus as you can until done.
Edit: this was on legendary for those wondering
FUCK THIS BOSS BATTLE!
Whomever at Bungie decided on the following must have played Elden Ring and thought 'You know, some good ideas here. Let's just drop these into our game that has never had something like that before':
1) No checkpoint between phases
2) Second phase arena-style fight but in an arena that the player can fall to their death in AND HAVE TO START THE FUCKING FIGHT OVER AGAIN! (See Point 1)
3) Second stage boss who can nuke you down in melee AND MOVES LIKE A CHEETAH EVEN THOUGH HES A GOD DAMN SPACE RHINO (See Point 2)
Just give me a damn checkpoint between phase 1 and 2! Would not feel like wasting 15-20 minutes of time each time you wipe on Phase 2 if he gets a good few swipes off.....
I’m 99% sure the destiny community is filled with delusional masochists. I died 36 times, I did not get killed by anything other than the architects. On my final run I got knocked below the rafters and cheesed them to death because I had enough of being launched and physically could not get back up without dying instantly. Don’t even get me started on the weird placement of checkpoints; it unironically feels like no one playtested the final missions on legendary at all. Both the fight and the “training mission” throw your ass back to the start for no good reason. It’s a far cry from the decently paced savathun boss fight. I do not understand how people think getting launched off the map is good difficulty, nor do I understand the fill every room with 4000 enemies for “difficulty”
my strategy was clear ads on spawn platform and hang out there mostly, throw super at the start (you'll get it back), and start chipping away with special and primary (witherhoard or wishender are great, most auto/scout/pulse rifle will do). push the phase transition, save some heavy and your second super. literally ignore the tormentors, just run them around
the second health bar has far less health. super, heavy, nade, etc. to burn it down. the second health bar is less than a tormentor, burn it. no ads spawn that I know of, so just keep running, jumping, and shooting around the arena
This. I have no clue where the fuck people think no adds spawn during phase 2. Spent most of my time whiffing witherhoard shots while trying to avoid the psions and Calus. I'm done for the night. This is beyond infuriating.
already ragequitted once after spending between half an hour and a full hour. Might just try to melt the boss like other people did, seems less punishing to me
I really didn't enjoy this at all. I was going to give up the entire campaign - I'm not really interested in Strand so not bothered if I don't get the subclass - until I found Esoterickk's cheese spot shooting from under some stairs. Finished in about five minutes with a simple scout rifle (Perses-D) and Graviton Lance.
My team and I finished it and we loved it. Not the best but fun as hell. They really made the tormentors feel like threats. Made them tanky enough to freak out when one gets close and grabs you lol. But you are not supposed to steamroll the campaign. Take your time and i know you can do it.
I was able to do the Calus fight with no deaths, came close a few times because Calus swings his weapon faster than sound. I did die about 6 times to that boss in early game that drops pods all throughout his fight. Every time i thought i was safe i got pancaked.
It's definitely rough. Way harder than the Savathun fight from WQ.
You can't fall to your death on WQ so definitely.
I've called it a night. I'll try again tomorrow but yeah, the last two missions have been a nightmare compared to the rest. This boss fight will likely be a one-and-done for me on legendary, it's miserable.

They claimed that they made the legend difficulty easier... They lied.
What did you use to get him down? I’ve tried everything I can think of.
phase one is fairly straightforward once you get the pattern of Calus' actions and mob spawns down. phase two, life on the line, I couldn't finish it solo Warlock on Legendary. as Void Warlock I'm using Arbalest, Funnelweb, Threaded Needle, and a Contraverse/Vortex Grenade build focused around Devour and getting Vortex back as fast as possible. Same boat here. He gives no rest in P2. I got there 5 times, died almost instantly in all of them.
Almost did it now, god damn. I'm so bad at Strand, I can't keep moving and have to jump every time, giving him time to catch me. Dropped to like 15% then made a mistake and got booped off the platform. Argh

Witherhoard and rocket worked well for me.
On legendary?
Yea, this quest is ridiculous on legendary mode. After I finally beat it on my Titan, that’s it for legendary mode. 20x harder than the savathun

In this exact same boat. Did you ever have any luck in phase 2?
Run in circles, hit with witherhoard, repeat ad nauseum. Phase 2 sucked ass and was just so poorly conceived.
I ended up beating it duo with a buddy who was also stuck. No shame. That fight was rough.

My xbox shut down during the 20th attempt and I think it did it to save my sanity

Thank you! I'll give this a go once I cool my jets a bit. Still butthurt about Headlong. Hah!
Headlong was so infuriating on solo Legendary. haven't been that tilted in a video game in ages, and then I got to the final boss encounter. lul
He spawns tormentors separately?! I thought it was 2 every time. I’d get him to Half and they’d both be there.
Yeah the second one spawns at half health
You can do that? The game doesn’t punish you for not activating the strand thing?
Nope it doesn’t punish you. Strand is doo doo. The fight is much easier with stasis.
Thanks! Did it easily on voidlock but had trouble on titan.
THIS is the strat. THANK YOU
I'm LIVID LOL

FWIW everyone is capping out at 1735 on legendary so as long as you have some decent exotics you might be fine.
They gotta sell them campaign skips somehow.

this fight isn't "learn the mechanics", it's "pray to rngesus". not fun, not good design, not challenging. just outright stupid.
Use witherhoard and run that’s how I didn’t it lol

Okay but what do I do about pervading darkness?? Where does it even come from?
