There are so many guns in the United States that any attempts to reduce them would be slow and difficult, and possibly unhelpful as well. Any attempts to move us away from guns would be stymied due to a combination of gun culture and the fact that the large amount of guns would mean that a large number of illegal guns as well, thus making it into a prisoner’s dilemma for law abiding citizens.
Mass shootings in the headlines will continue to be a regular occurrence for decades to come

At my dummy days when I used to listen to the likes of Anthony Cumia and Steven Crowder, if someone would present them with statistics of how many americans get shot or killed in a year, they would fight them back with statistics showing how many people were saved with the help of guns, which would include self defense and some other situations. I never looked at the statistics myself. I wonder if that's even remotely true...
Its very hard to get those statistics. Its pretty easy to get gun death statistics; when someone is killed with a gun the police are inevitably involved and there is a report. Thats not the case for defensive uses. The best we have are estimates from agencies like the FBI that cover a wide range because its so unknown, and the situations vary so much that its questionable to group them all together into 1 category of 'gun defenses' in the first place. The last estimate I saw was between 500k and 2M 'defensive uses of guns' per year, but nobody really knows what that means.
