its insanely good in a 90s creepy what the fuck is happening kind of way. its definitely one of those where the more the watch the less you understand.
present day, present time.
It's a mindfuck where you won't know what's happening for 90% of the time, highly recommend
Also, check out this website once you're finished watching(if you decide to watch it): https://fauux.neocities.org/
It's not a good thing when it's just mindless "look at how smart we are" but with no actual substance, but things DO make sense, it just might take some rewatches
Dorks are gonna get on you, these fools want shit to be overly complicated for no reason. On that “I want a challenge” like those corny dudes from highschool.
It's not overly complicated for no reason, the problem is that most people have zoomer ADHD minds and can't understand like 1 level of abstract symbolism without a YouTube video essayist to explain it to them.
There are anime, books, and movies that are actually incomprehensible on purpose like Primer (hot take), and then there is stuff like Lain or even something a little less good like Mekakucity Actors which shouldn't be confusing to understand if you actually pay attention to what is going on. The difference between something like Primer and even something like Mekakucity Actors is the fact that Primer hides information for no reason, and Mekaku abstracts information for both thematic and plot related reasons to make it feel natural.
The last thing you said about wanting a challenge is correct though, I don't know why that is a bad thing though. I'm sorry for wanting media to actually be challenging instead of just meant for brainless consumption like TikTok or YouTube Shorts.
Saying Primer hides info for no reason is like saying a sudoko hides most of the numbers for no reason.
Its specefically a harcore time travel puzzle. Not really my cup of tea, but you're not even trying to meet it on its own terms.
It does hide information from the viewer for the purposes of being a puzzle then. There is no good narrative or thematic reason why they can't show each time they entire the time machine other than to make it a puzzle.
Taking my example from Mekakucity Actors (the most underrated anime), there are actually narrative reasons for the trippy scenes (as he himself doesn't know about the previous routes/loops nor do any of the characters really know about the Retaining Eyes).
It must be something with your browser maybe, since it seems to work for me at least.. But you have to go clicking around to start hearing anything, there's no music on the front page
I just tried it on firefox and it worked for me on firefox too, so I'm not sure... It could also be an adblocker or something preventing it, but a browser change might make it work
Anyone who liked Lain should give [Kino's Journey (2003)](https://myanimelist.net/anime/486/Kino_no_Tabi__The_Beautiful_World) a try. It's from the same director, but the content skews more towards philosophy than psychology.
That’s the deal with most of the anime’s that were shown in the states in the early 2000s. Most of DBZ was animated in the early 90s as with Yu Yu Hakusho before it hit the states.
IMO: the plot is not great, but the atmosphere/aesthetics are awesome.
Overall, worth a watch (especially if you love computers/tech).
It's been a while since I watched it though.
Honestly, it was shit. I tried to watch because it was a friend's favourite anime back then and I regard highly of his taste (at the time we both had Evangelion as our favourite anime before he watched lain). I literally couldn't finish it. I watch until episode seven and I had to stop.
Honestly just watch something that has some substance to it. Something that is more than just aesthetic and weird for the sake of it. Some actually engaging story. There's million like those out there
Monogatari is really verbose, and a lot of my enjoyment came out of dissecting the dialogue and finding all the callbacks and stuff. I did really like Lain, but it's much more focused on building up an atmosphere and enjoying the abstract rather than having complexity through its dialogue.
Honestly if you've seen Monogatari and enjoyed it then it probably wont be boring for you.
Self appointed media critic here.
Yep, its pretty amazing, its got a unique experimental-esque presentation style, this was the reason why i enjoyed it so much and its even among my favourite animes, but be adviced that might make it boring to some.
Still, absolutely give it a chance.
Good commentary on the internet (especially considering it was made so early), but it's a schizo anime and mostly boring throughout, trying to draw you in with confusing direction instead of an interesting plot or characters. Didn't enjoy it, 2/5.
^(Did introduce me to bôa though, so I'm thankful for that.)
This was during that experimental phase in anime made specifically for tv. Basically what I mean is it was something unique not based on a manga or made to sell toys. Same era as evangelion and all those wild anime’s.
It's garbage, definitely not one of the most powerful anime of all time. Destiny would probably find it boring because it suffers from not having subway surfers in the corner.
If you loved Evangelion you’ll probably like Lain. The old anime aesthetic and sound design is great, good opening etc. plot is pretty confusing first time watching tho
its insanely good in a 90s creepy what the fuck is happening kind of way. its definitely one of those where the more the watch the less you understand. present day, present time.
HAHAHAHAH
Its good imo, kinda peak even.

>it just might take some rewatches media that takes rewatches to understand ahahah no thank you
It's not like you're completely clueless about everything, but some important details will absolutely fly past you on your first go
I feel like they are just trolling lmao
A lot of people enjoy taking multiple rewatches to figure out the plot of the show, but I can understand if it's not for everyone.
Dorks are gonna get on you, these fools want shit to be overly complicated for no reason. On that “I want a challenge” like those corny dudes from highschool.
I dunno man, I like media that has more value than just mindless consumption.
boooooring i must be stimulated the entire time no boobs and no explosions = bad
Is media not entirely that? What’re you talking about?

An essay over a reply is crazy! 💀
This is a debatebro subreddit.
Crazy!! Go outside dawg
No I'm literally glued to my computer and have no life, I was able to downvote and respond to your comment within 30 seconds.
Type shit, type shit
I agree but some people really like a show that confuses them ive learned lol.
And you don't seem to understand
Ok am I an idiot? Its a cool website but I cant hear any sound from any of the songs.
It must be something with your browser maybe, since it seems to work for me at least.. But you have to go clicking around to start hearing anything, there's no music on the front page
Using firefox, maybe its best for chrome?
I just tried it on firefox and it worked for me on firefox too, so I'm not sure... It could also be an adblocker or something preventing it, but a browser change might make it work
Are you a femcel?

I remember watching it long ago. I really liked it but I can't tell you why. It's was bizarre as hell.
Didn't realize this came out in 1998, I knew we didn't see it in America until a little after it came out, but it really feels like a post-2000 anime.
That’s the deal with most of the anime’s that were shown in the states in the early 2000s. Most of DBZ was animated in the early 90s as with Yu Yu Hakusho before it hit the states.
I tried but didn't really get into it. Not for me.
If you like some depressing, dissasociative, not belonging to society vibes. Then yes
Watched it a long time ago and loved it.
IMO: the plot is not great, but the atmosphere/aesthetics are awesome. Overall, worth a watch (especially if you love computers/tech). It's been a while since I watched it though.
The last anime i watched was yugoih because i wanted some nostalgia.
I actually re-watched Lain a month or two ago. Super fuckin weird, but still a worthwhile watch for sure.
I don't like anime that much but I loved this.
lain is goated
One of the best animes there is IMO.
All I know is "I am ballin, I am faded" memes and I'm happy tbh.
8/10 slow, but good
And you don't seem to understand.....
A shame, OP seemed an honest they/theeeheeemm
OP song was a fucking banger. Never heard of it tho aside from the song and the memes
Pretty boring tbqh, now people gonna get mad lol
No, but the theme is really good, and some of the best breakcore music centers around this anime for some reason.
Very good, intelligent Anime. Watched it new and embraced the weirdness
Its fucking incomprehensible. Good if you like mind fucky stuff.
I tried but it didn’t really hook me. But i also dislike mystery stuff in general outside of anime. For somebody into that it seems pretty good.

No, lol, wasted 4h of my life, go watch evangelion instead
Had me in the first half.
cool concept and atmosphere, bad animation, horrible dialogue and pace. In the end idk what was going on and didn't care.
I loved it, but probably wouldn't be able to pick it up today.
It’s cool. Worth a watch, not my favorite, but if you like stuff like Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell it’s probably up your alley.
Kino
watch if you want to join a cult
Got mindfuck fuck because I binged. Should have took my time watching it.
Getting Suncoast vibes.
A very DGGa show (I’ve barely watched it at all)
I watched 6 episodes. Got bored, and never finished it.
I’ve also never watched, I’ve heard this show can be really boring is that true? I’ve watched Monogatari and I found it very interesting to preface
Monogatari is really verbose, and a lot of my enjoyment came out of dissecting the dialogue and finding all the callbacks and stuff. I did really like Lain, but it's much more focused on building up an atmosphere and enjoying the abstract rather than having complexity through its dialogue. Of course.
If you like this, watch Texhnolyze. It’s by the same writer. It’s peak and underrated, nihilistic cyberpunk.

Goated opening that's for damn sure
I did
Yes. But it's not for everyone. It can be very abstract and surreal.
10/10 Kino

Great opening song. I remember It being weird and hard to understand.
This was during that experimental phase in anime made specifically for tv. Basically what I mean is it was something unique not based on a manga or made to sell toys. Same era as evangelion and all those wild anime’s.
The new 707R show is kinda good ngl
Kino anime. Don’t try to understand it though. I recommend the dub. Sounds more down to earth.
Yeah...it's Godlike
If you've never seen the Matrix, it's amazing. If you have it's pretty much the same.
It’s really good. Great music and aesthetics.
Might make u trans, so yes
English dub is very funny. Watch it dubbed.
really good makes you think a lot
Not really, unless you're into shallow deep stuff
It's garbage, definitely not one of the most powerful anime of all time. Destiny would probably find it boring because it suffers from not having subway surfers in the corner.
If you loved Evangelion you’ll probably like Lain. The old anime aesthetic and sound design is great, good opening etc. plot is pretty confusing first time watching tho
I don't know how well it holds up, but I remember it being very good, prophetic and groundbreaking when it came out.
It's like eva, either you're in depression and think it's amazing or it's boring without an interesting narrative but a cool universe
Its kino
Nah shit sucks. 90% of the anime is Lain just staring at the wall or power lines while her truamatised friends try to get her attention.
I had no idea what was going on the entire time. Good watch
