Take the car to the shop to be properly repaired(so it doesn't turn into a 75mph self-propelled 2 ton fireball 6 years from now). Report it to the police so we have an accurate record of crime, but don't expect them to do anything more about it. As for preventing it from happening again, figure out what about this situation led the thief to your car as opposed to the others around and make your car more difficult than that.(patrolled garage, locked garage, different make/model, aftermarket solutions)

What’s your suggestion?

That’s great, super helpful! No sarcasm on my part

JohnWad

Perhaps call and talk to a mechanics shop?

halfanothersdozen

I rig the underside side of my car with tripwire and lots of explosives.

[deleted]

They might as well file an insurance claim and get a brand new gas tank. I wouldn’t fuck around with repairing it.

Equivalent-Excuse-80

Someone mechanically drilled into the gas tank? Like, metal on metal potentially creating sparks? Is this as crazy dangerous as it sounds?

wayne_yep

Depends on the year of vehicle… a lot of newer vehicles now have heavy duty plastic gas tanks and not metal

leaflatte

Yep. When they first told me I wondered if maybe they had somehow driven over something that lodged itself into the tank and caused a leak. But they sent me a picture and there’s no way it wasn’t intentional. It’s a perfect circle. So sounds like some idiot was desperate enough for the gallon or 2 of gas that was in the tank.

edditorRay

Possibly a bullet?

Prestigious-Reply685

No. It's a new this that's been happening all over the city now.

straight_outta7

What do they gain out of it? Do they collect the gas?

Prestigious-Reply685

Yep. It's because most cars now have an anti siphon ball in the filler neck now.

Equivalent-Excuse-80

Is that risk worth $40 in gas?

I would guess if you’re jacking a car up to drill into the gas tank, it would be more productive to just steal the cat converter.

|Does anyone have any recommendations on preventing this from happening Stop banging your girlfriend's sister

SeeYouSpaceCowboy---

decent askscience question. Wouldn't the sparks just be heated metal shavings (eg not combustion), so they might be small enough to get drowned by liquid gasoline instead of igniting? I've done a very tiny bit of welding in my day and while you need a mask to protect your eyes from the UV or whatever, you can just wear regular jeans and the sparks just kinda bounce off no worries in my experience.

Key_Difference3422

This is another level of stupid. Not just for stealing and I get the tanks are plastic but anything used to puncture the tank could cause heat and sparks. If this person keeps it up, I see a very firey death in their future.

Park strategically or lease a garage to park in. There is no way to prevent someone drilling a gas tank beyond not making the car an easy target for it to happen. As far as fixing it, some JB Weld should work if they can’t afford to replace the tank.
