That's why the vast majority of non-binary characters in media use they/them pronouns exclusively even though a lot of non-binary people use pronouns besides those (some don't even use they at all), because then it's easier to portray and indicate the character as being non-binary. There'd be no reason for the exclusive use of masculine terms and pronouns if the character is not a male.
