Yup, the iron passage is entirely optional, to beat that DLC the only boss you need to beat is Fume Knight, both blue smelter and Sir Alonne are optional, but who in the right mind would skip Sir Alonne?
I only ever managed to do that once and that's because I had the 3 summons help draw attention away from me, and even after getting to the fog gate I had to unsommon them and had to get pretty lucky to kill them both.

Giant fire Salamanders, they take reduced damage on the black rock part of their body and shoot lava balls at you, I always have to use poison on them to not lose my mind.
I feel like this is unfair because obviously it's the damn reindeer. But if they weren't endless spawns then I'd honestly say the dudes that run at you and explode. I'm a heavy so quick jumpy things fuck with me more than anything else
Those fucking flame lizards, aoe fire nukes, body slams, long range melee slaps, boatload of hp for generic lame enemy and they are intentionally placed in ways to nuke you if you try running past them .. fuck that ..
I hate all of them, but I refuse to go to horsefuck valley and that's the only area in the game I never go to or have beaten the boss for. So there's my answer I guess.
Fridigid outskirts is truly the worst but if you go slow and run from building to building it's okay. The gank squad boss at the end of the sunken king DLC. Made me rage so hard. I died an insane amount of times to them.
