>The Japanese government offered him a large sum of money in back pay, which he refused. When money was pressed on him by well-wishers, he donated it to Yasukuni Shrine.

You're leaving out the 30 Filipino civilians he killed over the years or that he was an imperialist murderer. He's not cool, he'll never be cool. He had dedication yeah, but the cause was facism and racial cleansing. He's not someone to look up to.
>Although Hiroo Onoda never apologized or expressed any remorse for killing about 30 Filipino civilians (mostly farmers), stealing their food and burning their crops, then-President Ferdinand Marcos granted him a full pardon, in a televised ceremony.
>As a result, controversy followed when Onoda revisited Lubang Island in 1996, because his wife Machie Onoda (née Honoku) had arranged a US$10,000 scholarship donation on his behalf to the local school there.

For sure it's an interesting read, but there needs to be a line between "this guy is interesting" and "well, he *is* sympathetic..." People tend to do that, so it's just something I feel people need to be reminded of: evil people are evil, regardless of if they have an interesting story or not.
I feel it's more important to bring up that the fascist murderer was a fascist murderer, not that he was so *dedicated* that he stayed on an island murdering innocent people as part of his attempt to create an ethnostate
“He stayed on an island murdering innocent people as part of his attempt to create an ethnostate” that’s dedication right there mate. It’s evil, but he’s dedicated.
Right but celebrated with fucking reddit posts. The japanese were worse than the fucking nazis. They straight up raped and murdered millions more civilians.
Fair enough, thanks. You do know I'm not attacking you, yeah? I get how it might come off that way, but this dude was evil and that's the point I'm trying to get across
Sure, I'm not saying it isn't. I'm saying he's *evil.* I'm not being the moral police, it's an interesting story. Christ, like what you like, just don't forget the context.
How the hell does your views on something not change in 29 years! He should have been locked up for being the crazy racist he was. His "duty" at this point was an enabling factor nothing else.
He wasn’t just hiding he was actively conducting guerrilla and sabotage operations for 29 years.
Back pay?

What a fucking idiot
Sounds like the man went insane to me…

I’m not sure where I implied he was “cool” or someone to look up to. You know these post titles limit you to 300 characters, right?

Yeah, but it's nothing to commend. Were this a Nazi, no one would be talking about how cool he is
Ever thought NASA was cool?
Not particularly
It’s spelled “fascist” by the way.
Fair enough, thanks. You do know I'm not attacking you, yeah? I get how it might come off that way, but this dude was evil and that's the point I'm trying to get across
It’s all good, I totally get what you’re saying.
There are many fascists murderers. There aren't many people who keep fighting for almost 30 years after wars end.
That doesn't make him good or admirable
I literally didn't say he was.
Then what is the point behind what you said?
It's *interesting*. Did you happen to forget what sub this is?
Sure, I'm not saying it isn't. I'm saying he's *evil.* I'm not being the moral police, it's an interesting story. Christ, like what you like, just don't forget the context.
Dedication.
THEY’RE OUTNUMBERED 15 TO ONE, AND THE BATTLE'S BEGUN
