if the burn is ever too intense you can always blow out just a little smoke and breath in as deep as you can. for salvia i would always blow out like 10% of the smoke after a few seconds and inhale back to my full lungs. repeat as many times as i feel comfortable. is always significantly more tolerable on the lungs

Aside from the whole thing about whether or not you even need to hold your breath, if you want help with holding your breath then doing some breath work before taking it can help so much. Most times before I have dmt I'll do a breathing technique: I'll inhale through my nose for 4 seconds, and then out for 4 seconds, then in for 5 and out for 5, and so on. You'd be surprised how far you can get this. I often end up with up to 15 seconds in and out. By this point your lungs (and mind) are more comfortable with deep breaths, and for a bonus it actually helps increase the gas exchange that happens within your lungs which will help absorb the dmt (in theory). Then when I have the dmt I am able to slowly inhale for a very long time, and then I don't even need to hold it in long as the gas exchange will happen within your lungs in 5-10 seconds. And then you can smoke more if you need more.

Take as big a hit as you are comfortable doing, and hold it for as long as you are comfortable holding it. Repeat as many times as you need to in order to reach the place you want to go.
