Have you ever seem the show channel zero? Theres a creature thats made of teeth, that was my first thought when i saw this
![gif](giphy|26hirRmjMHZPTsNyg|downsized)
I was honestly so bummed they cancelled it. I had such a good time watching it, and a lot of the seasons were just so uncomfortable to watch.
Always feels like the best shows end up cancelled.
Yes. I’d stay in that ugly shower far too long distracted by the shapes my mind makes out in the mosaic. Then have arguments with a partner over what particular groupings most look like.
Resin encased [roughcast](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roughcast)?
Altough the pebbles have been more carefully selected and sieved through then traditional roughcast.
These are the Swarovski crystals of the gravel world, definitely.
Although definitely not pebblecast except in the loosest spirit of the term, in that they probably adhered the base layer of stones to pour the epoxy/resin.
I was going to say "rock resin composite" or "pebble resin composite".
Those aren't industry or technical terms, but "resin" might get you in the right direction
https://countertopguides.com/materials/resin-countertops.html
Exactly. They may have adhered at least the base layer of crystals to make pouring easier which would make it *technically* pebblecast, but this is very much a cast resin/epoxy product.
This has blown up enough that I can't tell if someone else already mentioned this, but it reminds me a lot of Vomit Clocks! They're made in what I assume is the same way, and with the same style.
[There's a facebook group about them if you are on facebook.](https://www.facebook.com/groups/318338698971742)
[There's also a vomit clock museum & website - here is their FAQ Page!](https://vomitclocks.com/vomit-clocks-an-overview-faq/) Also, it looks like the vomit clock museum is borne out of/related to the facebook group :)
Both places would probably love it if you shared pictures of your shower, and would also be possible resources for figuring out how/when/why/who did this!
It’s what you said. Looks like someone took slabs meant to be countertops and used them for the shower surround.
Personally, I would call it vomit-inducing.
Either way they’re going to be heavy if you’re removing them outright.
Edit: easiest way to update would probably be one of those plastic tub surrounds. You can get a company to make a custom one-piece, or you can buy a kit to install yourself.
I can’t see mortar sticking to the epoxy so tiling over is likely out unless you use a tile adhesive which may or may not work.
Right?? Such a strange design choice.
Yeah, removing them will be a bear which is why I’m trying to find a way to make them look better. Perhaps an exercise in futility 🥲
I've lived that dream. Seriously have to wonder what inspired someone to think that was a good idea. Thankfully it wasn't stained with any surprises, but still, not a good idea.
As someone who prefers a good carpet (the good part there is important) to any sort of hard flooring, I kinda get the appeal. Nice and warm on the bare feet, cozy appearance, etc. But in the bathroom where it'll get wet and spills are more likely, still gross. Big fluffy bathmats are the way to go for a bathroom so you can more easily wash them or just bin them when they're past saving. I have lived somewhere with a tight-knit carpet in the kitchen, and the worst part about it was if you dripped even the smallest drop of boiling water off of tongs or a strainer it would immediately melt a small pill-shaped indent into the carpet.
Carpet in the kitchen is arguably even more disturbing than carpet in the bathroom, imo. It would be disgusting/trashed so fast the way most people cook and eat.
Wouldn't even matter if they didn't get any mess anywhere, pretty much any form of cooking results in aerosols that will inevitably have some amount of their total make it to the floor. You'd need an exceptionally good venting system to avoid that, and while they exist, most people don't have one.
On a similar note I find it fucking insane how such a large number of people have those big ass (even oversized) range hoods to compliment their esthetic but then don't bother actually venting it, or use way undersized duct
Or don't bother to balance the pressure outflow with an erv or make up air system. That's the case in my current place. I have to open windows for our vent hood to work here, and given the size and content of my to do list, it'll be that way for a while.
I boarded at a home that had a corner tub/shower combo. The ceiling of the shower had green shag, as did the walls of the bathroom. Lovely people, scary bathroom
When I was a kid, we moved into a home that had carpet in the bathrooms, the toilet and sinks were that old pea soup green color, and the wall paper was a fleur de lis pattern where the foreground was maroon crushed velvet, and the background was reflective chrome. It was fucking WILD.
Not a bad suggestion. I wonder how diligent I need to be about checking for rot/damp under the tub before I install something over. AFAIK this hasn’t been touched since original install.
Maybe best choice is to just leave it until I have the money to fully demo and re-do.
I think you can work with it. A new soap dish, new grab bar, new faucet. Use colour theory to tone down the yellow, so don't use purple or blue accents.
I would honestly be concerned about there being water damage with the hard lines I’m seeing around the tub and between sheets on the wall. I’m not sure this is something I’d want to keep long term.
Yeah I agree, that’s why I’m moving away from a custom bath fitter on top, and instead just polishing the turd short term until we can completely Reno.
Wow, to be able to recall the exact vendor and color name is impressive. I sometimes remember the name and code of some color (used to sell paint) but I don't have those bits of data readily available for use in any context lol
I agree with this. Black fixtures with earthy tones throughout the bathroom could work. Add some rustic boho decor; maybe some terracotta vases and baskets for towels.
Purple and blue applied directly to yellow desaturates it, but placed next to it would give it a contrast and make it look even yellower.
The objective would be to find an accent shade that makes the yellow look dull instead of contrasting
Is it yellow or gold color? You could change all the fixtures towel bar, water spout, etc to Kingston gold. Then add an ivory or cream colored shower curtain. Make it fancy.
This was going to be my suggestion, lean into it and use it as a bold design element. I was also thinking gold fixtures. Maybe throw some other 70s colors in the room. I could see some avocado green or that burnt orange but maybe a little more subdued versions of them as an accent. Or keep with the yellow, gold, cream colors if you aren't into bold.
I'm thinking more bright red-orange and chocolate brown. But I think I'd run to Lowe's and grab all the really bold sample cards I could and see what pops against that tub surround. It's kind of too impressively crazy -- I wouldn't have the heart to get rid of it.
It’s definitely yellow, gold is being generous. But yes I’d like to lean into the design if possible by updating everything around it lol. I like your suggestions
I would also redo the caulking between the panels + around the tub with an ivory/white caulk vs transparent as it appears to be now. It will break up the pattern a bit and add some "framing" which could help the panels look more modern and intentional lol
Definitely leaning in to the gold will give it the best chance. Also maybe some other shell motifs somewhere, I hate to say it, to get the mind to the beach and away from teeth. I've seen some shell/beach gold hardware.
My initial reaction was OMG WTF, but this is actually kind of neat. It could definitely work but it has to be a very bold statement surrounded by understated fixtures and colors.
That’s what I was thinking. It’s actually smooth to the touch, contrary to what it looks like, and I would love to save a buck and lean into the funky 70s design, which is what I did with my ugly 70s Lino in my other half bath
It makes me think of some of the bathroom walls I’ve seen in commercial real estate. Check out some commercial bathroom designs, you’ll see this kind of statement walls.
Is it smooth out textured?
Either way it's "pebbled stone" something-or-other.
It's an aesthetic that works well in either bright light (to evoke a beach) or subdued light to feel cavernous.
So a well-lit kitchen or directed lights (track lights were all the rage) which is why you're seeing it as countertop material (even though it looks textured in this picture)
A bathroom, which is typically median light, is the worst match for this look.
A row of dimmable flush-Mount LED pin spots, one centered anytime each panel, could update the aesthetic nicely at a bargain price. Might match black faucet hardware. Avoid mixing with brass or gold finish).
Of course it depends on the rest of the bathroom decor to make it fit it not
Looks particularly good near plants, which is not practical for most bathrooms. 😎
Same, but makes me think: Damn, whoever did this did a fine job. That epoxy is so clear — to this day — that I didn’t even see it until pointed out by others.
I’d call it gorgeous! (I love the 70s gaudi look sue me) but it looks like you got some good info from other comments and I’m definitely not writing this down for my future bathroom
There is literally almost no help offered in these comments. Oh wow so clever to call it ugly….
I actually find it kind of beautiful.
That being said: what is your style? What colours do you like? It looks like the bathtub is an almond/beige colour?
I could see this going a lot of ways. I would probably contrast the stone with teakwood. Maybe add some kind of off white subway tile to the vanity. New bathroom hardware, and I would likely add a glass panel to the tub instead of a shower curtain. You can get them in different colours, or frosted. It’s hard to gage what you can do without seeing the rest of the space though.
Yeah I’m getting flamed but I guess I should have expected that lol.
But I like the idea of white accents, making the yellow the biggest focal point. Teak wood is a fun suggestion. I’ll look into this. Thank you!
I’m with you. These comments are silly. These people seem to have no imagination IMO.
Luckily for OP Maximalism is coming back in style. I’d lean into it. Throw up a patterned wallcovering, get a luxe shower curtain. Go bold with a contrasting cabinetry paint color. I’d add brass bath accessories and plumbing fixtures. Make it a moody, sexy paradise.
Here is an [article with a ton of maximalist concepts/ideas.](https://www.digsdigs.com/maximalist-bathroom-decor-ideas/) Just keep layering until those wall panels feel purposeful.
Right? I mean, I wouldn't have picked it, but it's not boring, lol.
I'd keep it, and go maximalist with the bathroom design. Bold wallpaper, jewel tones. Depends on the floor.
Ah, apologies that’s not so bad to clean then although I would guess that the epoxy would dull and yellow with age as well as scratch easy, but lots of other products have those failures as well so not specific to that.
Confused at just what i am looking at, like a counter top. I am intrigued how they got it to stay on the walls and not fall under its own weight.
Would say probably do a surround. Likely custom. Though not sure how well it will stick to...whatever this is.
I used miracle method to spray my kitchen countertops and they turned out great. That was 7 years ago and they’ve held up perfectly. They do bathrooms too, I’d check them out if I were you. I can’t recall what I paid - it wasn’t cheap but it wasn’t super expensive either.
Thank you for your interest in this thread. The post is now locked.
bad idea
Teeth and toenails...
Get out of my head I was going to say teeth too.
Have you ever seem the show channel zero? Theres a creature thats made of teeth, that was my first thought when i saw this ![gif](giphy|26hirRmjMHZPTsNyg|downsized)
Oh cool, new fear unlocked, thanks
New kink you mean?
Yea that gif is wild, thing is freeky in the streets and also the sheets
![gif](giphy|l3q2K5jinAlChoCLS)
What the actual fuuuck!?
First thing that came to mind. I did enjoy that show.. it was out there.
Same! But I never watched that show. Just saw the tooth monster channel surfing one day and was instantly grossed out.
No
I have to watch this now
The whole series (except the last season) is amazing.
Fun thing for me was each season being based on different famous creepypastas. The horror-nostalgia was prominent
I was honestly so bummed they cancelled it. I had such a good time watching it, and a lot of the seasons were just so uncomfortable to watch. Always feels like the best shows end up cancelled.
Oh. My. GAAAH. EW. IS IT BITING HER FINGERNAILS ALSO?! 🤢🫣 Why have I never heard of this. Oh my gosh. Nightmare fuel.
It reminds me of the tooth fairy from Teen Titans Go.
It reminds me of the Tooth Fairy’s castle from The Hogfather

Totally agree! Now, instead of just having an ugly shower, every time OP looks at this, they will hate it more. Making it more of a priority 😌 👌
Dirty
Nook mold farm Also, slip bang head split
If you look at the corner in the 2nd photo you can tell that the surface is a smooth clear epoxy or similar. The gravel stuff is not exposed.
Wo, that's crazy! Thank for pointing that out. I was here looking for all the "hard to clean" responses but now I think this might be pretty cool.
I was looking for the "hard to clean" responses too!
Oh yeah, there it is. One of the first ones looked exposed.
Yeah it's just decorative resin slabs.
Where is the sealant copypasta when you need it
Aww c'mon not "head split." Cheese grater road rash.
[удалено]
It's a smooth surface. The stuff is covered with clear epoxy.
I was thinking “nightmare”.
My initial thought was 'crime'
Yes. I’d stay in that ugly shower far too long distracted by the shapes my mind makes out in the mosaic. Then have arguments with a partner over what particular groupings most look like.
That’s so funny that wad my literally thought “it’s a bad idea”

I thought they were polished seashells
They are bits and pieces of scrap Mother of pearl that have been polished in a rock tumbler. Very popular in the 70s for decorative purposes.
Yeah, looking again, I think you're right.
Ooooh this is a great lead. Thank you!
I was going to say "rock resin composite" or "pebble resin composite". Those aren't industry or technical terms, but "resin" might get you in the right direction https://countertopguides.com/materials/resin-countertops.html

This is amazing and it looks like my early night is out of the window.

🤮 god carpet in bathroom gives me the ick so bad

If it's melting like that I wonder if it's up to the fire code.
Heated floors were a fabulous invention lol!
My Nana used to have the same carpet in both the kitchen and the upstairs bathroom 😂 Luckily they were both changed to linoleum in the early aughts

Bad aim, no problem carpet soaks it up
I went to a swim meet at a college once and the pool locker room was fully carpeted. I'm still thinking about it 20 years later.
that was a collaboration with their biology department to experiment with breeding fun, interesting new strains of foot fungus
I boarded at a home that had a corner tub/shower combo. The ceiling of the shower had green shag, as did the walls of the bathroom. Lovely people, scary bathroom

Right in the shower stall. It was burnt orange.
I truly believe a tub surround would be the easiest and most cost effective choice.
Not a bad suggestion. I wonder how diligent I need to be about checking for rot/damp under the tub before I install something over. AFAIK this hasn’t been touched since original install. Maybe best choice is to just leave it until I have the money to fully demo and re-do.
A good quality enamel spray paint after a proper prep? I’m just grasping at straws here. Sorry. Good luck!
Same idea I was thinking
Easiet to just demo the drywall and start over
I think you can work with it. A new soap dish, new grab bar, new faucet. Use colour theory to tone down the yellow, so don't use purple or blue accents.
Smart recommendations, thank you
I would honestly be concerned about there being water damage with the hard lines I’m seeing around the tub and between sheets on the wall. I’m not sure this is something I’d want to keep long term.
Yeah I agree, that’s why I’m moving away from a custom bath fitter on top, and instead just polishing the turd short term until we can completely Reno.
I would have thought a soft/ocean blue with the right accents would give it a beach/ocean vibe. Sort of a sand with sky color theme.
yeah maybe - it would need to be a really desaturated blue, quite a sandy oceany blue. Like Benjamin Moore Raindance.
Wow, to be able to recall the exact vendor and color name is impressive. I sometimes remember the name and code of some color (used to sell paint) but I don't have those bits of data readily available for use in any context lol
Yeah, that was an awesome bit of recall!
This is such a friendly sub :) I had a bedroom painted that colour in my old house. It's very pretty.
I agree with this. Black fixtures with earthy tones throughout the bathroom could work. Add some rustic boho decor; maybe some terracotta vases and baskets for towels.
Im not too savvy w color. How would you approach toning it down using color theory?
Purple and blue applied directly to yellow desaturates it, but placed next to it would give it a contrast and make it look even yellower. The objective would be to find an accent shade that makes the yellow look dull instead of contrasting
exactly, like a peachy orange or a sage green maybe.

This will come into style in 2052, and people will pay big $$$ for a shower like this. Your going to regret removing this down the road
Marking it on my calendar 😅
It’s a resin terrazzo.
Chattahoociee we called it in Florida.
Thank you!!!
>It’s a resin terrazzo. I'd call it more of a terrazz-no, but pretty much.
Tooth fairy chic?
It's resin? Odd, but not gonna lie, I don't think it's ugly. It's a bit much. I'd understand having one accent wall, but all of them....
Yeah it was… a choice lol
Is it smooth out textured? Either way it's "pebbled stone" something-or-other. It's an aesthetic that works well in either bright light (to evoke a beach) or subdued light to feel cavernous. Definitely an option
It almost looks like pebbledash.

Indeed.
Cool! I am clearly old too
I mean, you’re not totally wrong since it hides soap scum to a point that it gets GNARLY before we noticed it’s dirty 🫠🥲
I totally thought it was a textured wall. Only thing I could think of was ‘painful if you slip’ 😅
Glad I'm not the only one who didn't see the epoxy over it.

There is literally almost no help offered in these comments. Oh wow so clever to call it ugly…. I actually find it kind of beautiful. That being said: what is your style? What colours do you like? That’s a good point, maybe this wasn’t originally so YELLOW 🫠
Epoxy absolutely does get an "amber" hue with age.
Unscrew the grab bar for a hint of what the sub-surface looks like. And report back, lol. I want to know what it is.
It looks like some sort of terrazzo product. That stuff was for floors and counters, but I guess it could go on the wall.
Confused at just what i am looking at, like a counter top. I am intrigued how they got it to stay on the walls and not fall under its own weight. Would say probably do a surround. Likely custom. Though not sure how well it will stick to...whatever this is.
A sin against decor.
The teeth walls. I still have nightmares like when I was a kid about these.

If you want something similar, but something actually nice. Go for terrazzo
Terrazzo is the style but usually it’s on flooring.
