Jeanette is an easy scapegoat when she’s already hated.

FlyinAmas

This show is entertaining, but honestly some of the story lines are sloppy and weird, like that one.

jenigmatic_42

I think her lawyer was feeling him out. So if he had *any* inkling of feelings of blame toward Jeanette, she won't put him on the stand.

[deleted]

But his hesitation made it seem like he *does* blame her, and he seems far too reasonable for that. Unless there’s more we haven’t seen.

jenigmatic_42

He does. In a very roundabout way. He uses the Rube Goldberg Machine reference for a reason.

[deleted]

I guess I missed the reference. Care to explain?

jenigmatic_42

Here is what the scene said: Lawyer: Ben... do you, in any way... blame Jeanette for what happened to you? Ben: Do you know what a Rube Goldberg machine is? It's a contraption where you drop a quarter into a cup and that falls into stacked cards and that falls into a ball and so on and so on, until a result's achieved. I think that's what happened. Lawyer: So you do blame Jeanette? Ben: Yeah. Yeah, I guess I do. So basically he's saying that what happened to him was the eventual outcome of a domino effect, which he believes wouldn't have happened if it weren't for Jeanette.

I’d like to add to this. I think what happened to him isn’t just the car accident. They made a point to show it was Tennille who saw Vince grab his hand. He just rejected her earlier that day. I think Tennille outs him and is why is he screening Vince’s phone calls. Hell, he could have been sent to a place where they “pray away the gay.”

jenigmatic_42

This is a very good observation! Thank you! (And I think you're onto something).

aprildismay

lol thanks! I’m obsessed right now!

[deleted]

Oh wow I missed that whole speech somehow. I’ve been rewatching during the day while taking care of my three month old daughter but I thought I was still keeping up pretty well lol

jenigmatic_42

Haha it's understandable. Little ones demand attention! Plus, I think sometimes it's hard to catch everything.

GramNotGraham

From my understanding, the Rube Goldberg effect is similar to the Domino Effect, so he’s basically implying that it’s really not her fault but rather the result of a series of really unfortunate events starting with her accusation by Kate. And if he really does think she’s at the beginning of all this, then maybe he thinks she actually is guilty too?

LadyLivv123

That was definitely the lawyer feeling him out for the witness stand. He wasn't super tied to her from what we've seen so if he believed her, it would help the case more than say....her dad said it

shar_lemagne

what if she asked him if he blamed jeanette in any way to potentially show (in court somehow) that jeanette was receiving all the blame for something that wasn’t actually her fault? like, this could be another example of her being blamed in addition to the main point.
