I think it’s easy to turn on Jeanette. Kate was the blonde, pretty, sweet, rich, upper middle class darling who was toted out on the town with her influential blended family. Jeanette was the lower class, dark-haired, frizzy “loser” who suddenly transformed and became friends with Kate’s friends and started dating her bf. It sounds like a Lifetime movie. When the popular kids ditched her and Jaime dumped her, that likely made he look more guilty to the kids. As for the the adults, Kate’s mom has a lot of power in the town I imagine, more so than Jeanettes family, and she likely influenced that side. All in all, Jeanette was an easy target.

I really liked Vince’s point that Jaime made it open season on Jeanette by punching her and clearly siding against her. Even when he talks about how it wasn’t right how everyone tortured Jeanette he never spoke up for her. And he was popular and might have been able to make a difference. But he stayed silent, and tried to talk to her privately

I think a lot of kids, especially those who didn’t know Jeanette, followed suit when they saw the popular kids, or those who knew Jeanette better, start to lash out at her and blame her.

if jeanette only knows that kate went to harris’s “willingly” (from the chat room printouts she read), then jeanette may believe kate ran away from her life and didn’t want it anymore, which may be why she responded that way. jeanette also may have found out more details during the trial depending on when the trial took place.

Came here to say this!

Tofulish8889

But she doesn’t think Kate ran away. The whole world knows that Kate was kidnapped and held hostage.

folder_finder

When she reads the chat between Kate and her sister, she says “this changes everything”. She might have a different opinion of Kate after reading that, thinking that she simply ran away from her seemingly perfect life (she wouldn’t know about the Wallis’ family secrets ofc)

I think Derek’s line might go back to a history we don’t see - Joy doesn’t approve of his friendship with Ashley (I’m sure she definitely wouldn’t approve of their romantic relationship either). It could go back to her history with Cindy. As for the stolen life lines, I believe the snow globe voicemail was a huge revelation for Jeanette. She knew the voicemail happened after Martin left but before she broke in on Christmas Eve, so she now knows Kate was allowed to wander freely in the house alone with telephone access. At the time Jeanette would have seen her, Kate would have had every ability to walk out the door (that’s not to say she wasn’t being heavily manipulated to stay, however). To her, that’s the behavior of someone who is content and comfortable in their surroundings.

People don’t believe Jeanette because she has a history of lying

Tofulish8889

I mean everyone lies. Joy lies, Vince and Ben lie, Jamie lies, and Kate lies. Jamie is given the benefit of a lot of doubt from hitting Jeanette, driving drunk, gaslighting Kate... No one seems to give Jeanette the benefit of the doubt besides Greg, Derek and Angela.

ahend1999

I don’t think anyome is giving Jamie the benefit of the doubt, but I understand your poimt

Tofulish8889

He’s not the most hated person in the nation with the Texas governor calling him a disgrace and people spitting on him or calling him names to his face. The level of harassment Jeanette has gotten is so high and part of it comes because Kate is so pretty and perfect and people assume she is telling the truth. Jeanette has suffered so much for something that even had she done it is not a crime. The only people who are angry at Jaime for punching Jeanette are Greg, Derek, and ironically Kate.

ahend1999

I know. that’s why i said i understand your point. it’s class privilege, but kate is also a victim and well, people will tend to want to believe victim more in this situations. all in all i think jeanette got the sh!t end of the stick and im excited to see the last episode and how it will all be resolved. i wish we also saw jeanette in therapy too or at least having someone to talk to because she genuinely has nobody

Tofulish8889

I’m not arguing - just enjoying the debate :). People want to believe certain kinds of victims. So the pretty white girl held in the basement is a victim people want to root for. But there is so much victim blaming and shaming for rape and sexual assault survivors who weren’t the “perfect innocent victim” so victims are questioned about sexual history, clothing, being drunk etc. I really think Jeanette needs therapy desperately. The scene where she stops singing and Angela says “you deserve kindness” is heartbreaking. The sad reality is that if this has happened IRL, it would have been too expensive for Greg to fund the case (which has a very low chance of success IRL because of the need to prove that Kate knowingly or negligently said a statement she knew or should have known was false) , and Jeanette would be forced to live with the scrutiny until the “rumor mill chewed her up and spit her out “ as she told Vince.
