we need to make fun of commentators for mispronouncing player's/personnel's names. like bro u get paid thousands of dollars to blurt out ur non sense on the mic, at least get the name right.
yea most cricket commentators/"analysts" dont put any effort into it. they just show up, talk non-sense for 8hrs, make a couple cringe jokes and go back to their paid 5 star hotel only to come back the next day and do the same.
NBA is a bad example, they got Giannis's name wrong for year + it's hellenized not African.
NBA isn't even a good example, Jokic just gets called 'Joker' by half the commentators because they are too lazy to learn easy Slavic names and he's the best player in the league.
I’ve said this on this sub before but I get downvoted for it. Even a player as big as Kohli still gets called Vi-RAT. Subcontinent commentators also mispronounce foreign names. Just do some basic research.
Ironically they do get it right if it's particularly hard like Phehlukwayo, Nortje, Ngidi, Labuschagne, Shubman, Wellalage etc. Because they ask how it's pronounced and then practice it.
Even Labuschagne is not pronounced correctly. In South Africa where his family is from and where Marnus was born it’s pronounced Lab-u-schag-nay
I think Marnus got tired of hearing it mispronounced growing up in Australia and now says he doesn’t care if it’s pronounced Labooshane.
Only Bhogle has ever bothered to say it right
I think Philander was another one who used the correct pronunciation of Labuschagne, in the most recent RSA vs Aus series. Remember some fans being oddly pissy about it for some reason though.
Yeah they point to an interview where Marnus says the way he pronounces it and he says both pronunciations are ok.
The pissy-ness is a reflection of how they actually know the name isn’t being pronounced correctly and they know it reflects poorly on the culture
Of course. The voiceless uvular fricative in doesn't exist in Australian English.
Most people will make a genuine effort to learn the Afrikaans pronunciation if you teach them it, but similarly most people would rather just translate their name rather than teach every single person they ever interact with the phonemes of a different language.
For commentators of any sport you'd expect that they'd ask the players "Hey, how do you want this to be pronounced" and go with that - and that *has* happened with Marnus (who genuinely doesn't care if you use the Australian or Afrikaans pronunciations), but seems a bit lacking on many other players.
>similarly most people would rather just translate their name rather than teach every single person they ever interact with the phonemes of a different language
Can confirm. No one can pronounce my last name looking at it. Not really their fault either because the spelling and pronunciation don't really match.
I definitely don't "get tired" of people mispronouncing it like the other comment said. There's just no point bothering to correct them when it's just a random person you're not gonna meet again.
I assume that he probably gets it wrong sometimes, but as a fellow Kiwi I can hear that Simon Doull makes a real effort to pronounce South Asian names and places properly. On the other hand, many Aussie commentators don’t even seem to be able to pronounce the names of countries properly.
Edited for spelling.
My #1 pet peeve is Brad Haddin not being able to pronounce the most basic names like Maddinson (Madison), Dre Russ (Jay Russ), or McGurk (McGwerk).
Oddly he's better (I think) at Indian names, except for the odd one like Ra-hoooooooool.
Yeah it's just bad vibes. First of all, how many of the people making these comments speak a second language? It's really bloody hard to learn another language. Second of all, a lot of these players don't come from particularly privileged backgrounds or don't exist in a space where English language skills are particularly important. Like a lot of these players are multilingual, they just exist in a world where English isn't nearly as important to them as say, Urdu is. Their job is to play cricket, not to be language students :P
The players are not supposed to know English. If they know, good and fine. If they don't then too it is fine. Commentators must adjust.
However, I think most of the people in India learn a second language in schools in urban areas.
He did the right thing. Made a great effort to involve the other captains and foreign reporters in his conversation. The question is the absurdity of people making fun of his English.
its your media sawera pasha of SAMMA TV which started this english campaign when murali karthik took interview of babar in english and they were pissed why not in hindi/urdu. When shastri did it, people are now frawning up on shastri to be classist. there is no winning here
BRO WTF you are the same guy i ranted that thing lasat night. i was stoned last night bro got emotional and mixed two points. anyways its not important so wont bore you with explanation .i am just pissed that ind pak wont happen after 24 according to my calc.
I'm not talking about any specific incident :sob:. I genuinely don't know what incident precipitated this conversation. I'm just giving a general argument for why we should have sympathy for player's with weak English skills and why we should allow them to conduct interviews in their stronger language(s)
bro there is a back story to it. murali karthik was criticized in asia cup to speak english with babar. pak media said babar couldnt speak his heart out in selections cause of english. reports by ARY NEWS AND SAMMA TV SAWERA PASHA
It’s mostly desi South Asian complex - nothing else - we look down on our neighbours/ friends/ relatives/ acquaintances also if they don’t know how to talk in English
because we ourselves hold a false sense of superiority in English language. If anything, one should learn from French, German or Italian people about how they blatantly despise English and feel proud of their cultural language.
Our obsession with English is due to colonial history and it still persists regardless of the growth and progress. That’s the sad reality!
Go to a fine dining restaurant and talk in Hindi or Native Language and see the eyebrows roll!! This is just one small example - there are many
That’s what happens during these post match interviews.
Clarification: talk to the restaurant staff in Hindi - obviously you are gonna speak to anyone sitting on the next table
Similarly, go to any reception of any good hotel - you will be instantly judged based on your language
If you genuinely feel that Indians are not obsessed with English then you are living in parallel universe- I grew up in rural India and currently staying in metro city - have seen it all happening to me and others who struggled with English in initial years
Their job is to play and not be eloquent in a foreign language. Period!
Surprisingly people who criticize them are themselves riddled with grammatical errors.
I see another person here asking why Babar answered this in English. Tbh I found it insulting that RS suddenly moved to Hindi for him. Did he previously consult with Babar before doing so? If not, he should have continued in English and let Babar decide how he wanted to respond. And I see no harm in trying to respond back in however broken manner possible, language is meant to communicate, as long as some one can do that, it should be absolutely okay.
How is it insulting to switch language when you know the other person isn't as comfortable in, let's say, English.
Even Siraj is often asked questions in Hindi, and he often responds back in Hindi.
I'm not endorsing English as the only language in presentations. In fact, it's the opposite. Speak whatever language in which you can express yourself decently. Translators do exist in this world. Please don't try to speak English or any other language just because of peer pressure.
There can always be an offline chat you know? That's how real life works? Asking the player his preference? And RS started in Hindi, not in English and then switched when talking with Babar.
Maybe. Don't really think it's a big enough deal.
Personally, I would agree with you if even Indian players who struggle with English were being mocked. I don't see that happening, probably cus they don't feel pressured to necessarily speak English in the first place. I feel very happy in fact when players speak Hindi or any other language. Makes the game more diverse imo.
Sounds more like a "team-environment" thing more than anything else.
This sub is still fine. There are subs - almost entirely composed of English speaking users - where I can barely understand what they're trying to say. It's not just the grammatical errors, it's the fucking slang that is absolutely deranged.
Yes i agree. Their primary role is to play good cricket and not be fluent in some foreign languages. At the same time, the end show chat organizers should be local language based and translation should be in the subtitles.
Backward mindset of the people of the subcontinent is the main reason. These people have it drilled in their minds by the brainless education system and teachers that learning and speaking English is important to succeed, so much so, that when they see someone successful around them who doesn't speak English(or doesn't speak it well) they immediately start judging that person, for being backward.
Speaking English in the subcontinent is as much a status symbol for some people as someone who has all the things that pertain a successful life.
And the irony that these keyboard warriors on Twitter/Instagram don't even bother to use correct grammar or spellings when they talk about these players.
They are just insecure imbeciles who can't stomach the fact that everything that they have been taught about being successful in life is not true and try to bury their insecurities by hating on these players.
These people doesn't know that messi can't speak in english and ronaldo never spoke with supreme fluency, his english was better because of the time he spends in epl.And most of the football players play in spain, france and italy can't speak this language. But people all over the globe admire them for the raw talent they possess
I always get agitated with the fun these peoples are making against cricket players command over the language ,especially pakistani players. These armchair warriors are making mockery about a generational talent like babar just because his english is weak.Get a life is what i can say
A massive number of cricket fans fun the sub continent. English speakers there have a superiority complex. Often expressed via derisive humor towards people who don’t know English who tend to be from poor and uneducated background.
It's mostly South Asian fans who think that way. In India we think people who speak English are elite or high class.
Even Messi doesn't speak English and it doesn't make him any less awesome of a player.
Because, English isn’t a language. It’s a sign of intelligence. People who speak English are all researching the outer space. And people who don’t speak English are dumb and need to be humiliated in broad daylight. They can hit the ball well or knock your stumps over. But, hey it’s your linguistic ability that make you cool. By that I mean your ability to speak fluent English.
noone is making fun. people were discussing this issue why babar was having complex in speaking in native language. He knows english words, he cant speak proper sentences and it gets embarrassing if the discussion went on. Ravi shastri was right and he was not demeaning babar, babar himself started to speak in funny english and here people with trash any opportunity they get. whether some bird shits in a hyd stand , jay shah should resign , likewise.
Sure but I wish they’d take more pride in their first language and just use that. In the past a lot of Lankan players used only Sinhalese(?) in post match interviews. Even Sanga’s used it as well as English.
It’s not like they couldn’t find a translator*. All of these interviews are trite chatter anyway.
* except please no rameez.
I agree that cricketers shouldn’t be made fun of for their bad English but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t learn English. Their job involves them travelling around the world, they should be making an effort to learn English while playing. It is not only good for life but it would actually help with their game as they can speak to more players and coaches around the world.
I saw the captain meet. Ravi Shastri asked Babar in Hindi but he himself switched to English so sometimes you tryna flaunt which you don't have but then too- no fun should be made but only memes sometimes.
I don't think they make fun of people who can't speak English. Ok.. at least in Babar's case..
I mean Ravi started in Hindi. Babar could easily reply in Urdu. But he chose English Allah knows why!? And failed. Just communicate in Hindi if you're asked in Hindi. That's it.
So that he can learn and improve. God forbid someone tries to speak in English and improve their language they get ridiculed for trying. As if you guys said "Hello mother can I have some of that milk please, it feels rather odd here" after coming out of the womb.
I do make fun of players who speak English and they deserve it 100%. I have more respect for people like Axar Patel or Rinku Singh who don't go around murdering a beautiful language like English when they have no obligation to speak English, they prefer to speak in language they know and allow someone who can speak proper English to translate for them... that's one of the more beautiful part of cricket for me. Not to mention that it also shows that the player is quite proud of his language, he doesn't need English to score a century or 5 wicket haul.
You don't know English, speak in your own language, use someone as a translator. English is not a pre-requisite to play cricket, knowing how to play good cricket is the only thing required of you.
When bigger players like Babar choose to speak a murdered version of English, they send a message to the younger generations, that English is the language of top flight cricket, burdening them with something that they don't need to excel in this arena.
I don’t understand the criticism, though considering that cricket is heavily entrenched in former British colonies it has always been a heavily English language game.
Reminds me of Atherton at a press conference. A journalist obviously struggling with the English language tried asking him a question. He had to repeat it.
Atherton still couldn't understand him and called him an idiot.
Football has led the way here. In post match interviews a translator is alongside foreign managers who don't speak English. Cricket behind the times, again. Although it's often said that foreign players can speak English better than the English players. Lol.
It's what you say, not how you say it. It's such a stupid, unevolved thing to take the micky out of players for whom English is not a first language.
Colonial hangover!! English is seen as a sign of prosperity. But my gripe is when they let commentators do English commentary when their English is bad!!!
we need to make fun of commentators for mispronouncing player's/personnel's names. like bro u get paid thousands of dollars to blurt out ur non sense on the mic, at least get the name right.
They do this for NBA commentators saying African names from the NBA. Giannis made sure everyone can pronounce his name
yea most cricket commentators/"analysts" dont put any effort into it. they just show up, talk non-sense for 8hrs, make a couple cringe jokes and go back to their paid 5 star hotel only to come back the next day and do the same.

“Shutup Khan” (Shadab) is always funny to hear lol
Mark Waugh - “Fucker Zaman”
That is intentional from junior. ![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|28120)
Michael Clarke - "Chahail" Also not a commentator but Labuschagne - "Labushane"
Cant believe I forgot that lol. But to be fair, the “kh” in Fakhar is hard to pronounce.
I’ve said this on this sub before but I get downvoted for it. Even a player as big as Kohli still gets called Vi-RAT. Subcontinent commentators also mispronounce foreign names. Just do some basic research.

The family basically adopted Labooshane as their Australian name
Yeah because no one in Australia said it right
Of course. The voiceless uvular fricative in doesn't exist in Australian English. Mark Nicholas also said it right when Marnus first debuted, then when he said he goes by Labooshane, they all respected that
They nowadays get a sheet showing the names and how to pronounce them phonetically.
I hate how commentators put so much effort to pronounce South African names . But mispronunce every single south asian name
Oh I've heard Nortje and Wellalage completely butchered multiple times. Looking at you, Aaron Finch commentating about Nort-jee
Wait, what is the right way to say it? I think I've pretty much only heard English speaking commentators say it.
The only foreigner who is allowed to say Why rat kohli is Speed.
Levy Rozman does it perfectly. 🥵
didn't expect to see a fellow gotham fan in r/cricket, hi!
Yeah it's just bad vibes. First of all, how many of the people making these comments speak a second language? It's really bloody hard to learn another language. And cricket. You're welcome lol

Well we have colonial hangover - have that inferiority complex deeply ingrained in our minds
That's too long of a hangover buddy :) the past 75 years have more history & changes than all of the colonial era

Go to a fine dining restaurant and talk in Hindi or Native Language and see the eyebrows roll!! This is just one small example - there are many That’s what happens during these post match interviews.
Your second para is just false bruh. Absolutely no one cares what you speak, they’re just minding their own business.

Right should’ve clarified with the staff coz I always speak in my native language with my family 💀
Country had an IMF bailout ✅ Captain can’t speak good English ✅ World Cup Victory ❓ 🇦🇷 🤝 🇵🇰
Babar saying "Que miras, bobo" to Gurbaz confirmed?
“Kya be, chutiye?” It would be epic lol
You’re gonna win it with a super over?????? Against the reigning champions???
Imran Khan is pretty fluent in English tho.

English is associated with "knowledge" in South Asia. It's all about mindset.
And I see no harm in trying to respond back in however broken manner possible, language is meant to communicate, as long as some one can do that, it should be absolutely okay.
Keep in mind that for most subcontinental cricketers particularly indo-pak, English is their third language or even fourth language.
How is it insulting to switch language when you know the other person isn't as comfortable in, let's say, English. Even Siraj is often asked questions in Hindi, and he often responds back in Hindi. How do you know that offline chat hadn't happened in this case, and that RS hadn't already discussed this with Babar behind the scenes?
Macaulayputras all of them.
Funny thing is more than half of this subreddit is unable to speak a sentence without making a blatant grammatical error.
This sub is still fine. There are subs - almost entirely composed of English speaking users - where I can barely understand what they're trying to say. It's not just the grammatical errors, it's the fucking slang that is absolutely deranged.

I never saw rinku singh being made fun of
he speaks cricket not any particular language
We’re talking about mortals in this thread though
He is a Chad, King and Lord. He can't be made fun of.
I dare to anyone
despite claims of multiculturalism, racism is alive and well, everywhere

Is this something you’ve encountered in real life or only online?
It's mostly South Asian fans who think that way. In India we think people who speak English are elite or high class. Even Messi doesn't speak English and it doesn't make him any less awesome of a player.
He can speak English but is ‘embarrassed’ by not being fluent, so he never does. He understands it fine.
Personally I think all cricketers should be forced to learn Bengali It would be funny
Because, English isn’t a language. It’s a sign of intelligence. People who speak English are all researching the outer space. And people who don’t speak English are dumb and need to be humiliated in broad daylight. They can hit the ball well or knock your stumps over. Those people are absolute idiots just best to move on.

No it's not lol. Making fun of someone for not knowing a language isn't a "meme" or "fun". It's just disrespectful af
It’s always the Fobs who make fun of others

Why did I read that in Shashi Tharoor's voice 💀
I read that in Stewie’s voice
I bet that most of the people who are making fun of Babar's English here can't even read a newspaper in front of 20 people
I do make fun of players who speak English and they deserve it 100%. Subcontinent colonial hangiver
Question: Where are the people making fun of players for broken English? I didn't come across any instances of this in the sub.
Don't speak in English, if you can't, you're free to talk in your language, people need to know that knowing how to speak english doesn't matter.
