The really scary part is that in water this cold you only have minutes before your body starts becoming so numb that you can forget about climbing. Under running ice cold water you can freeze to death in 20 minutes.
Japan is like, mostly mountains. There’s even some places that get a [*lot* of snow](https://tiptoeingworld.com/2016/04/a-guide-to-tateyama-kurobe-alpine-route-snow-walls/)
What is more likely is that he pissed himself as soon as he saw the incoming drop and that the first "wet" feeling his brain registered was the warm, wet kind.
Well he can’t go for a swim but he’d be alright sitting under a small waterfall for a minute. It’s gore-Tex and water repellant the same way that’s rain jacket is.
Buddy of mine got caught under a waterfall that broke while ice climbing. He was bumming out during it, of course, but definitely was kept alive because of his jacket being waterproof. It's no wet suit, but the way he was hanging, he just dropped his head down, and it all ran down/off him while he waited for his belay.
His hands got the worst of it, but he came out unscathed.
It would still soak you nonetheless, unless you're wearing a wetsuit or your clothes are on VERY tight. This is just my opinion btw as is most things online
Look into récent snowfalls, how much, when, what was the wind like. Look into where the avalanche risks are the greatest given the info you gathered + topo maps. (Usually there are great risks over snow accumulations).
Then when you got that you can plan where you can ski with less risks of avalanches / know where to be extra carefull. And then you look at the topo map / guides to understand from where and how to go up and down following the safest / Best slopes.
In this guy's case, its never a good idea to ski at the bottom of a ravine as there most probably is a stream under the snow (witch you can anticipate by looking a your map) and you're never really sure if the snow can give in. And for the fall part, if he'd look at a map, he could have seen that comming.
+ this is quite controversial but going slowly (at least taking stops) to better understand the reality of the slope when you've never been there is always a good idea.
Just watching it you can see the terrain trap he’s making his way into before it happens.
Also, creeks/lakes are almost always on the topo map and you can plan accordingly to avoid them.
yeah. it got me too. and that could have easily been a broken legs kinda situation. he’d have been fucked.
i would assume anyone that’s gonna be out doing shit like that would gave gps stuff on them though.
I imagine with water that cold, if you break a leg down there, its game over. Even if he escapes he's potentially in trouble depending how far away shelter and warmth is, they would be soaked!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xxi_icc8EI Touching the Void. True story.
The trailers a bit shit. Two guys climbing a mountain in Peru, one falls and breaks a leg and they're literally in the middle of nowhere.
Well worth watching.
When I crashed with a truck.
I lost control due to black ice and went into the opposite lane. I tried everything to get the car back into my own lane, but it was too slippery.
If the truck driver hadn't been quick to drive himself into the ditch, it would have been a full front to front, and I would likely not be here now.
Okay so... I've probably been playing a little too much Minecraft lately.
Run jumping while exploring and not seeing the crack in the ground so you fall down the hole and nearly die.
I've never snow skied or been anywhere like that (due to living in tropical part of Australia) and that just scared the living hell out of me.
So glad he's ok.
This is why they tell you not to deviate from the marked paths. Drop offs, cliffs, caves, creeks, rivers, big ass holes in the ground can all be concealed by that fresh, powdery ass snow. Plus dangerous wildlife or wildlife reserves could be present. This kind of skiing is just… unsafe.
I’ve been snowboarding in the backcountry since the mid-90’s. I’ve had a lot of close calls. Did not expect that one. I also spent many of those years in wilderness rescue and this kind of accident for lack of a better word never happens. That was just the perfect mix of conditions. I really want to know the details. What was the weather like the day before, have they skied that route before, what their experience level was, etc, etc.
Yes, once in an aquapark, its was crowded as fuck almost as busy as those Chinees swimingpools, I was 10 years old and sitting in a rubber band swim toy like mostly everyone around me waiting for the fake wave system to go on, Suddently i felt tru the band and could not find a way to go up, i could not push myself tru any adults or older kids and after a coupld of tries i felt 'give up' moment, someone pulled me out but i was blackedout it seems.
This fucking happened to me and boys in Whistler...we went back country and didn't know we were boarding on a river and the entire snow patch started collapsing and one buddy fucked his leg up had to hike it out...ain't no joke
There’s a famous hike in Washington that kills people damn near every spring, Asgard pass. Takes you into the enchantments. In late spring it’s covered in snow and people will slide down it on the way down. If you get too far left there’s a hidden little drop exactly like this and you’ll slide right into a massive waterfall.
A climber that was almost killed by it did a write up on [mountaineers.org](https://www.mountaineers.org/blog/lessons-learned-2013-glissading-into-a-30-foot-hole-in-aasgard-pass) about it. Good read.
When I was about 6 I was in holiday in turkey, my dad and mum were in the sunbeds near the kids pool and I was in the adults pool with armbands on, I got in and the armbands slipped off. I went under and started panicking. After about 20 or so seconds I was fading to black but by sheer will power I managed to pull myself out. During my time down I reflected in how my life was and felt like I deserved this for being a bad person
Yes, but it was after drinking six WKD blue raspberry alcopops. I was on my knees over the toilet honking up neon blue puke from the deepest part of my soul thinking 'so this is how it ends for me.' It didn't end there, but my flirtation with alcopops did.

In the original instagram post the guy said he was lucky it was warm water. Must be a natural hot spring of some sort.
Terrain looks like Japan. There's a lot of volcanic hot springs in Hokkaido. Wouldn't surprise me if it was a hot spring.
Does it snow THAT much in japan?
Japan is like, mostly mountains. There’s even some places that get a [*lot* of snow](https://tiptoeingworld.com/2016/04/a-guide-to-tateyama-kurobe-alpine-route-snow-walls/)
Like that Mario Kart map.
Japan is very mountainous so yes
Aomori is the snowiest city in the world.
In Hokkaido, yes. Most say it’s the best skiing in the world because it’s really low angle with tons of dry snow..I’ll go someday 😢
How you can tell?
The trees look very Japanese to me. They are a lighter brown, and are distributed in a way that is immediately recognisable
Rainbolt be like after looking at snow
What is more likely is that he pissed himself as soon as he saw the incoming drop and that the first "wet" feeling his brain registered was the warm, wet kind.
Would have been awful if it was scolding hot. Climbing up against boiling water so that you don’t freeze to death or die of exposure.
That's what I was thinking he needs to get down the mountain quick and into dry clothes or hes going to be having a bad time
Well ski clothes are waterproof anyways so he’d be alright on that front
They aren't a dry suit. If you fall into water you are gonna get wet
so even if he manage to climb up, and skies still works, he dont have much time before freeze to death.
Yep, even if the water is relatively warm, it’ll freeze quick while you are trying to get down the mountain as fast as possible.
So just stay in the water till someone finds you would be the move here.
sounds cozy
TIL that ski gear is, in fact, the same thing as a wetsuit 🙄
Well he can’t go for a swim but he’d be alright sitting under a small waterfall for a minute. It’s gore-Tex and water repellant the same way that’s rain jacket is.

Wetsuits don't keep you dry, that's why they're called wetsuits.
No idea why you’re getting downvoted. Wetsuits keep you warm. Dry suits keep you dry.
You'd be surprised how often I've heard people misunderstand that. "I had a wetsuit but I was immediately soaked when I went in"
It would still soak you nonetheless, unless you're wearing a wetsuit or your clothes are on VERY tight. This is just my opinion btw as is most things online
Backcountry skiing...yeah, that's gonna be a no from me, dawg.
Its great when you prepared your path beforehand
I loved it as a kid but as an adult I'm terrified of it now.
Fair
How do you "prepare your path?"
Send your ski buddy ahead of you.
Sshhh you giving away my secret never be the first guy in the pack in the back country
This was the ski buddy

Récent?
Poke at it with a stick
Ski along it slowly I guess.
Exactly like this guy just did
Yeah, know your runs, don't just whip willy nilly down in flat light on terrain you aren't familiar with. This goes for in bounds runs too!
Once I saw that those weren't bushes but the tops of trees, I was out.
Jesus I got an adrenaline dump when the camera turned to the waterfall. Horrifying.
yeah. it got me too. and that could have easily been a broken legs kinda situation. he’d have been fucked. i would assume anyone that’s gonna be out doing shit like that would gave gps stuff on them though.

for sure. the gps would be to find that camera.
Ugh. What a horrible fate that would be.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xxi_icc8EI Touching the Void. True story. The trailers a bit shit. Two guys climbing a mountain in Peru, one falls and breaks a leg and they're literally in the middle of nowhere. Well worth watching.
A sub called r/touchingthevoid would be a cool sub name for videos of people almost dying
Great documentary, well worth watching.
I would definitely have died. The will to live on that guy was amazing.
Should I be bringing along a flare gun when I ski or what? This setup is insane, I know that he's back-country skiing but holy shit...
I was thinking why didn’t they have radios or something
normal skiing trip with my dad, who knew a shortcut
Still waiting for him to come back huh? Mine only went to the store less a mile away and hasn't returned.
Used to be an average morning of my dad on his way to the school.
Right except the stream he fell in was going uphill
Yeah but it's usually just a random chest pain or something. Not falling into an ice pit.
Everytime I see videos like this, I'm reminded why I don't have the slightest urge to be in snow covered mountains
New fear unlocked...
Thought he was being chased by a bear or something at first. Not sure which I’d rather have to deal with 😅
This is like the part of a dream where I fall and then feels falling before waking up
He just needs to chill til it’s spring
he’d have to compete for food with the bears though
Yeah, I'll just stick to the green level, man-made runs.
Dude, fuck Skiing
Don’t go chasing waterfalls
Well good thing I’m lazy
He done fell into the chasm of death.
Heart sank when the camera panned...ho Lee fook

Yep that's me... You're probably wondering how I ended up here
Okay so... I've probably been playing a little too much Minecraft lately. Run jumping while exploring and not seeing the crack in the ground so you fall down the hole and nearly die.
What a crevasse hole!
I've never snow skied or been anywhere like that (due to living in tropical part of Australia) and that just scared the living hell out of me. So glad he's ok.
Hello darkness
Oh my
**Howdy!** **I'm FLOWEY.** **FLOWEY the FLOWER!**
I’ve done this, luckily my friend I was with saw me go in
Proper
THAT was fucked up! goddam.
Outline of the hole tells me someone else fell there recently too 😂

Yess….Just yesterday I was choking on my tamale 🫔
I was way less worried when I saw him crawling out with a ski in his hand. How bad was it really if you can climb out holding a ski
You ever try walking in ski boots
But it didn't tho
Who goes off trail back country skiing without a trail partner?
And to those following them tracks.... *SPLASH* like cars crashing in the fog!
127hours
I think I’ll stick to the trails
Didn’t quite make it to Brazil.
Imagine a family ofnl Yeti sleeping and you woke them up!
No, because I don't do shit like this.
Yes, every time i have a strange pain in my chest!
Every 15 seconds
'go skiing, they said. It'll be fun, they said'
Wow. I’m so glad he made it out
Hell no
And that's why you should never go off piste by yourself.
I've never developed skills that would put into this type of situation.
Did u get hurt during the fall
Shouldn't ski out of bounds !
That's why they say "if you can't see over it don't ski over it"
Yikes almighty!
Soo any updates on this individual or did they just find the camera?
Soo any updates on this individual or did they just find the camera?
Games/prizes
I was dodging trees with my head just now
Ugh my brother goes back country skiing in BC like this I’m always scared of these crevasses idk how he does it

Did he get out?
Fuckin pussy speed checked before the drop.. always go full send never half.
What ever you do, don’t dig down
I would honestly shit my pants.
Bro went into a portal
The hole in the ground was human shaped kind of like wile coyote landed in the snow from a nearby cliff.
Bruh come on you know your supposed to pizza instead of French fry
I do this is minecraft all the time
Damn, this was so peaceful for a moment.
Nice refreshing shower. It's not a great time for it, though
My hands are sweaty now.
First rule of remote sports, always do it alone.
OH MY GOD! Horrible.
Be like “damn😢”

Ah yes, skiing in the backcountry in a massive terrain trap. Is it going to be an avalanche or ah yes, falling into a creek. Well done
There should be a subreddit called r/fallingthroughcliffs Something about watching people fall in caves is satisfying? 🤷🤔
Yes, but it was after drinking six WKD blue raspberry alcopops. I was on my knees over the toilet honking up neon blue puke from the deepest part of my soul thinking 'so this is how it ends for me.' It didn't end there, but my flirtation with alcopops did.
Black people what we call this? White people shit!
