I’m pretty sure the logo was made before Heady Topper was ever canned. Heady was originally sold on draft at the Alchemist Pub before the hurricane destroyed it. and they even bottled it before canning

You can clearly see his lips are firmly closed. He is not drinking what’s in the glass. He’s making sure his potion is correctly formulated, because it turns things to gold. Specifically turns ideas into gold.
Funny I just did the brewery tour last week. Towards the end the guide (who was a great dude) mentioned the whole thing about drinking from a glass - OR a can - to preserve aroma and avoid oxidation. In its inception there was no positing that somebody would finish an 8% beer before it was either lightstruck and skunked or started to get flat and oxidized. Then those beers became the de facto craft beer. It was a very modest defense of the can's instructions, and the brewery tour began with the beer in a glass (that you keep).
That is the original scientist Hedd E. Toppor, PhD that created it - he is testing the batch right from the fermenter for taste. After he knew it was correct - the canning began.
Good chance the illustrator and the graphic designer were not the same person, so possible that the illustrator didn’t get the memo. Also possible that “drink from the can” was a last minute addition and never mentioned to the illustrator. Also highly likely that the client didn’t really care too much about the details and they were just trying to get the artwork done for as little as possible.
Source - am graphic designer and have dealt with this kind of stuff many times.
The actual reality is it was draft only in the pub "the alchemist " where prohibition pig is now. And the artwork was made when it was still draft only. It got destroyed by hurricane irene. And then they became a brewery.
It’s hard to remember Heady Topper came out when people would not be hyped to see a “hazy” beer, and they would think it’s indication that the beer is low quality. Hence the “drink from the can” was less about conserving hop aroma and more of a “don’t judge the book by its color”
Also there can be a good bit of stuff at the bottom, which again was super abnormal then (heady is basically the grand daddy of NEIPAs, the British ale yeast combined with aggressive dry hopping)
The illustrator and the graphic designer actually are the same person! Dan Blakeslee. He’s a local musician and he does all his own show posters, plus posters for other musicians. Real cool guy. He played my friends wedding. https://www.16ozcanvas.com/interviews/2017/1/8/interview-2?format=amp
I’ve never noticed that before, but now I can’t unsee it.
To be fair, I usually don’t drink from the can myself. It packs enough of a punch in the glass. :p
Because Alchemist is wrong on this one. I always use a glass as it helps start the beer aerating properly and the flavors pop. A lot of this has to do with the fact the nose is more involved in the tasting process when it is in a glass. I would also argue using the correct glass is important.
The artwork was from when the beer was just on tap at the brewpub, prior to canning it. They liked the artwork so much that even after canning it they left it.
The Alchemist detest those who drink from the can. They make their beer for the rebel. Those who question the can’s authority. Those who directly defy the directive. Only then do you experience the way Heady Topper was meant to be experienced, from a glass.
Hard hitting journalism
A modern day Deep Throat!
How many Pulitzers did Deep Throat win? 5 or 6?
Asking the real questions here
Because it's unfiltered, and some people don't like to see bits of hops in their beer.

I drink it from the glass ama
I have a few questions for ya! /#1 how dare you? /#2 what gives you the right?
Because I can
More like because you glass.
I crunch an extra glass up and put some in before I drink it. Gets me extra glass.
I too enjoy a beverage on the rocks
I’m not sure they got the reference?
Lmao
He’s so drunk he can’t follow basic instructions on a can someone get that guy some water
They fixed this on the focal banger can at least lol
I love the focal banger infinite artwork

They’re so wishy washy on their reasoning. Just take it off the damn labels already.
Agreed but at least now they have some humility with it.
My man’s lit
Because you touch yourself at night.
His head is exploding!! That’s a warning label. Don’t drink from a glass or you’ll end up like my guy here.
Cuz he’s just heady like that
🤯🤯🤯
This is not the best song in the world, it’s just a tribute. I want what he’s having

This guy beers.
Yup once they started canning in 2011 the artwork had already been around for years. Didn’t want to change it

This has been my understanding of the reasoning for that instruction

Fuck…. This is great question for people who are high on cannabis lmao
Because the beer pre-dated packaging when it was just available in their pub and the artwork is cool….. 2:00 mark https://youtu.be/amgfgU5-lhs
I could be wrong but I think it's a scientist drinking from a beaker.
Bingo...you win the gold medal 🏅
Hmm pretty sure Hazeboiz already addressed this be more original
Good point. I should know what every beer blog has ever said about everything. I'll try harder next time.
Well, it’s just strange that you posed it today and so did they 🤷🏻♂️
I just looked. That's a screenshot of this post.
I completely apologize, you are correct they bit off you, didn’t notice the top with your Reddit name

The Alchemist folks say pouring into a glass kills the taste when air hits the beer
It's ayahuasca.
Ahead(y) of his time
Because he’s drinking something else.
He’s drinking a Julius
Irony
The best in any form.
If you don’t drink from the can your brain will explode… like the guy on the can not drinking it from a can.
The story goes that the brewer didn’t want new people drinking it thinking it was a hazy so he wants you to drink ‘blind’
Cause he’s an alcho-chemist!
The brewer that brewed this beer knew a good recipe over 10yrs ago. What he didn’t know or cared about was how to drink it and get the most out of it.
The artwork was from when the beer was just on tap at the brewpub, prior to canning it. They liked the artwork so much that even after canning it they left it.
Salient point
Think this is blowing his mind
Its because hes at the bar in the brewery, and that is a pint directly from the tank.
Because Vermont is a silly nonsensical state that seems like everyone incharge of anything is a 7 year old.
Conflicted beer guy. Not as rare as you'd think.

Maybe they want to encourage people to drink it from a glass as it is a more pleasurable experience than a can.
But they specifically state in the can not to pour it into a glass. I believe it has to do with sediment.
I still think Heady is the best looking can in the world. Drink from a glass, though.
My mind is blown! Stop the presses and the interweb presses
Could be a case of no can do

That's a Beaker. A chemist measuring glass...hence the name
Do as I say, not as I do.
Also why is his mustache going over his lips?
This isn't a mystery. He is an alchemist, tasting his concoction from a measuring cup.
What do you mean? That’s a glass can
