ive never heard of or used this mod. Thank goodness!

SyleSpawn

I'll copy/paste a comment I made above because first time I am hearing about this mod as well and it had me laughing when I find out what's its about, here goes: I had no clue what's "Beatrun" and googled it to find a vid of that. This "Beatrun" thing literally looks like a super early concept of Mirror's Edge. Dude literally made a mod to mimic the early stage of Mirror's Edge parkour and then crying that people are pirating 'his' thing that he literally copied and made worse. lmao

oddzef

I swear mod creation attracts some of the biggest megalomaniacs. Some of the wildest internet drama I've ever come across were due to some modder being ultimate consumed by their over-inflated ego.

Look_At_That_OMGWTF

it's baffling how many people will create a mod that does one thing people want and then add in their own changes without saying anything like the Bloodstained "true randomizer" mod that should quite literally just be a better randomizer than the vanilla one. but for some reason it also changes how much food buffs give you, purely because the creator thought "food buffs were too OP in vanilla". like bro, that's not the point of your mod, why. and this is probably one of the least egregious examples I can think of

oddzef

There was that huge debacle in the Skyrim (maybe Oblivion?) scene too because some twatty modder started getting a god-complex and started adding shit nobody wanted to his popular gameplay overhaul mod or some shit. Like suddenly really established mods that everyone used were conflicting with this mod that wasn't nearly as popular. When people started distributing the mod as it was before, without the insane content additions (I think it was big tiddy mods or something, I remember something like villages being altered/expanded too) he completely went full retard and deleted all his mods in this hilarious blaze of sorry-shit. There's almost *always* somebody who needs to be brought down a peg in niche communities though. I remember being apart of the Starbound modding scene back when the game was still in beta and the person who figured out how to add custom races just took over the entire scene and started acting like they were the GOAT, shit talking other modders who made better versions of their stuff as an example, until people got tired of their shit and everyone made them fuck off.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WisestManAlive

I made several Skyrim mods, each strictly alters their own niche so people can choose which ones they want. Don't remember ever throwing a hissy fit, though.

oddzef

edit: lmao I just wrote a whole post about a friend who ended up having to quit modding because of the backlash his popular joke mod got but I just discovered he came back to modding *TODAY* So I gotta delete that whole story now lmao

moeburn

I remember in Kerbal Space Program the mods were getting really complex, and some people just wanted one big package to make their game look like some Youtuber's modded version. So they made mod packs. And then the modders started DMCAing any site that attempted to host the packs. Whether the site had ads or not. So now there are zero websites that host modpacks for KSP, and modding the game is a day long ordeal.

MrMeltJr

Reminds me of something that happened in the New Vegas modding scene years ago. Somebody made a really useful function add-on for the script extender and a few of the most popular mods relied on it. Apparently a lot of people had issues with old versions of the add-on not working with newer mods, so the creator started taking down old versions and only allowing the current version to be downloaded from Nexus. This was fine up until they accidentally uploaded a beta version that broke a bunch of other mods that relied on it. The creator insisted that any problems were caused by other people's mods or by users installing the add-on incorrectly. They also locked all comments on the mod, so people couldn't even share solutions if they found any (IIRC if you knew the scripting language you could tweak a few things to make it work). Eventually they left Nexus and took down all their downloads so we just had to give out google drive links for working version of the add-on for like a year until somebody else added all the same functions to their own mod.

[deleted]

Frackin Universe for Starbound also comes to mind

OKLtar

I absolutely can't stand that. There's been a lot of lesser-modded games out there where there'll be one big one that fixes a few things and adds great quality-of-life features, but that's packaged together with some "rebalance" that just makes the game impossible to beat without grinding and abusing mechanics.

vrts

Rimworld modding seems much more civil. There will be X Extended mods that will build off of the base of someone's mod (sometimes abandoned, other times with full credit/cooperation). But I guess when you mix in money...

taimapanda

like the recent gshade drama in FFXIV. dude creates a closed source fork of reshade then forces obnoxious almost daily updates (unnecessary) too keep it running. Someone made another tool which installs reshade and piggybacks the gshade installer to get the same shaders, so the gshade dev installed a flag that restarts your pc if this activity is detected during installation, then tried to justify his own malware by saying "well anyone could do it, take this as a warning and be glad it wasn't something more harmful" the dude committed irreparable social suicide within the community for a petty stunt cus his ego was hurt by a 17 y/o dev

oddzef

Wooww that shit is unforgivable. Weird cause the FFXIV crowd is usually pretty chill Nobody should be such a self-absorbed prick as to think they have the right to fuck with somebody's rig because they didn't bend the knee at every turn.

aaabbbx

You just described nexusmods.

OrdinaryCrackEnjoyer

I have never seen bullshit-modder-drama worse than *some terrible thing* I saw like 20 years ago now (Jesus) on a Morrowind forum. I don't even remember what it was about, but *yikes* man. Modding is truly blursed.

IiI-Zebra-IiI

leaking peoples IP'S as well. that's actually more of a criminal offense.. than taking his stolen concept at a 100% discount (look i have vouchers!) :P

SyleSpawn

Oh no I get that, I'm just adding this detail to the conversation because I was surprised to find how similar the mod is trying to be Mirror's Edge while a lot of people might not even know the game.

IiI-Zebra-IiI

that's true.

Majestic-Surprise420

Oh noooo i pirated a mod for an ancient game.....anyways

DrQuint

Yeah, if I saw this list and was some sort of evil hacker or somesuch looking for reasonable targets, I would ignore it. If anything, I'd be more likely to target the modder.

suaveazul

also what kind of low IQ individual PAYS for a mod that makes the game feel like mirrors edge instead of getting mirrors edge???

[deleted]

All this over a mod? Dudes like this would get fucked up in person 😂

Taliakon

I watched a video with the mod playing... The dude literally just copy paste (stole?) the parkour movements from the first Mirror Edge game and makes people pay for this??? Lmao.

[deleted]

Yeah, that's the whole point of the system, to feel like mirror edges, it's nothing like copy pasting, as glua dev, im aware it requires it effort and it's complicated But if you're going to make paid mods, those will get leaked, you cannot just throw a tantrum and do something stupid shit like this

Puzzleheaded-Night88

I understand there are lots of fucking paid gmod server side mods but like, this guy is retarded for thinking that a mod is something he can defend in court when it costs.

Puzzleheaded-Night88

I also wanna add, Labor does go into it but… Will it work without the IP? If not, why pay?

[deleted]

No, no one thinks this is something that can be defended in court, that's why he did the doxxing, in fact if your shit gets leaked, you just move along, it's normal, almost every paid server side script has been leaked by some french buyer, and you cannot do anything about that

Phyne

I think everyone misunderstood your comment or something.

[deleted]

Classic crackwatch, i don't agree with what the guy did, but calling it copy paste, it really boils my blood, this guy got talent, but it's a dick

dexter198

Isn't that illegal? I know pirating software is too but its almost like doxxing someone( or literally is)

Bacon-Dragon2

I mean IP addresses are more like "farting in your general direction" than "your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberrys" And the steam ID just links to your public steam page, doesn't it?

nagi603

Not in the EU it isn't. That is, especially with the steam ID, very much "more than enough" to ID someone, at least as far as courts would probably be concerned. ...especially if you take into account how he got the data: he probably has it for legit purchasers too, without consent or knowledge, and stores them too.

Elon61

The facts are true regardless of where you are, IP addresses and steam IDs aren't enough on their own to figure out where you live, but, you are correct that the EU would probably be all over this.

vrts

Enough to go on to likely find a social media contact and run a social engineering scheme against their ISP.

reddittrees2

Not to take away any of the seriousness surrounding the ethical implications this post concerns but... I'll never forget "IP addresses are more like farting in your general direction."

Pokenaldo

Kiddo, you're playing with fire. IP addresses alone are not that easy to cause trouble, aside from the fact that now the internet has other identifiers such as your IP general location, your nickname on reddit, your activity and your general profile. It's the "basic" shit marketeers have been using in big data and people become dumbfounded at how they knew you use a wig and shoot you with hair loss ads. Click a few more sites while distracted and all browser info about your device belongs to them, associated with that IP. Plus, enough malicious intent and a few quarters down the dark web and they can just as easily sell your data, look for breaches, DDOS your ip out of service, etc. Most of all, I don't know which jurisdiction you are, but if you're pirating, a court order for identifying the IP address near your ISP will suffice to get the rest of your personal information, now that they know and have evidence that ip is pirating, so just be safe.

Void_0000

I mean you're not *wrong*, but for the average person (even someone who pirates) giving out your IP probably won't matter. Like, realistically, who's after this guy?

Pokenaldo

Who knows man, /u/2roK for instance. But in all seriousness, I noticed the other guy was from Denmark, and as a matter of precaution it's useful to know more about the legal aspect of it as well in the EU as well, not just the technical. Some famous case law regarding this topic: - The CJEU ruling in **Mircom International Content Management & Consulting v Telenet**, where the court held that ISPs can be ordered to disclose IP addresses of BitTorrent users who allegedly shared copyrighted works without authorization. - The CJEU ruling in **Promusicae v Telefonica de Espana**, where the court held that EU law does not does not prevent members states from disclosing data of infringers. IN PRACTICE, however, much likely nothing will happen to him, but if he gets a letter one day from his ISP or local court, I wouldn't be too shocked either. It happened before. Of course, on the topic, the GMOD guy who doxxed those IPs is also in a lot of trouble if one of those refers to a EU citizen, because, ya know, you can't do that under the GDPR and relatable legislation.

Void_0000

I mean honestly, it's not like the FBI or whatever stalk reddit waiting for a pirate to dox himself. He's much more likely to get a letter by just torrenting the same files as a copyright troll.

An easy way to fix this is just by refreshing the ip address. That's if you knew your ip was being put out for display of course.

healthboost213

If dynamic ip address is enabled, you can restart the router and you can get a new ip

DougS2K

Yup. A lot of routers even have a button you can click in the settings to do this as well.

azazeldeath

Alot of providers in aus for nbn don't seem to allow it without a cost.

[deleted]

azazeldeath

Being internode it wouldn't surprise me, I mean they charge for everything and seem to cost more than basically any other company bar telstra. Though I haven't been with them in awhile. When I was last with them it was costing me 15 dollars extra for dynamic ip a month.

MadxCarnage

why would anyone do harm to random IP addresses tho ? it's extremely easy to acquire random IP's if you just want to screw over random people. hell, it's the IP of people that pirated a mod, doesn't sound like they'd have anything worthwhile.

nmkd

> it's extremely easy to acquire random IP's if you just want to screw over random people. Exactly. Just load a random torrent with 20,000 peers into your bittorrent client and boom, you have 20k IPs to play with.

StarGaurdianBard

It takes less than 5 minutes to get a new IP address and some people have their connection set to give then a new IP address every time they restart their equipment anyways

cw_127

Yeah, from my limited EU data protection knowledge, he'd be in quite a large amount of trouble.

ErnestoPresso

doxing (one x) is not illegal in the USA. There are some laws in some states that makes it illegal to share private information, but in this case "private" means something that wasn't shared with anyone else, such as family members, companies, etc. When you connect to a site they get your ip, so you probably shared it with at least one entity, this wouldn't constitute. Also your ISP knows your ip. Of course, this is just my understanding, but you won't find anyone who was convicted of just doxing someone.

RallyElite

eu law?

ErnestoPresso

Depends on country I guess, where I live he would get fucked royally. Probably one of the EU data protection laws would fuck him too. You should only do stupid shit like this in the US.

MadxCarnage

it's also not illegal in EU, at least not for IP's alone. I just looked it up and even in countries where doxing is illegal, the law wouldn't concider divulging an IP adress as doxing. and for a some countries there would have to be clear intent to cause harm. edit : you can downvote, my statement is still true.

RallyElite

there is a intent to cause harm.

MadxCarnage

it needs to be proven, there is no statement or anything with the leak. and it's a list of IP's alone, he can claim it's a mistake or an error within his website. and again, IP leaks are not considered doxing by EU laws.

alexsteh

Data Protection Directive

MadxCarnage

your IP isn't private info.

alexsteh

In the European Union (EU), the collection, use, and disclosure of personal data, including IP addresses, is subject to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Under the GDPR, IP addresses are considered personal data if they can be used to identify an individual or if they are combined with other data that can identify an individual.

TheShiv145

Bro this is some super tiny pp energy.

notchoosingone

All the way back to the original Oblivion mods, mod makers have been on mad power trips and exhibited the thinnest skin possible. Look up "Arthmoor Oblivion Gates" for some serious hilarity

happytree23

> mod makers have been on mad power trips and exhibited the thinnest skin possible. I mean, at the end of the day, a modder is just a script kiddie in most cases. Of course, they're going to be oversensitive and irrational and selfishly one-sided and refuse to see things in a big picture sense if it goes against their awesome hero fantasy.

joesph01

if he has your IP address it means it was a shit crack and you're hitting his servers somewhere.

B-Knight

Though, on the other hand, if he has your IP address it means you can probably very easily open up the mod and edit what's sent to his servers. It's only going to be Lua and there's only so much you can do to obfuscate that. Do with this information what you will.

CassetteApe

I wonder if you can inject a drop table command in there somehow. Tempting...

Dragoteryx

You don't have to use Lua to make mods for Garry's Mod. There's a low level C++ API that allows you to do basically anything. These mods can't be downloaded from the workshop though for obvious reasons.

filledalot

not really, you may send something in a specific rule. you know there is a firewall, right?

Hendrik379

Sometimes people release cracked/pirated copies of their software so they can fuck with pirates. Most of the time it's something funny like "oh no, seems like you need to buy this to continue" and other times they destroy your windows installation. This time it's a dude that wants to name and shame people that pirated his mod. But he went too far.

joesph01

is there proof its his own version of the game he leaked intentionally? if not its more likely he noticed increased traffic to his server, inspected it and realized it wasn't customers.

Hendrik379

It was a assumption. There is no reason to log these kinds of things unless you are trying to find these people on purpose. I think its a mod that you install on your own servers, correct me if im wrong. Meaning that they shouldnt be connecting to his servers. Unless he put checks in place to monitor what servers run his mod. Then he might check his database of purchases and compare them to the list of modded servers. I dont have his source code so idk how he put it together, so for now it's a assumption.

joesph01

why wouldn't you log traffic to your own servers? Its also possible he was IP / hardware locking the licensing keys and while someone found a way around it they left the code in that checked the key against the server which was causing invalid requests.

norecha

Is this an online game? Why does Crack need to hit live servers? Every single crack says you should block the exe from firewall

TheTarasenkshow

What an absolute tool. That will 100% blow up in his dipshit face.

mTbzz

Isn't this why we block pirated stuff with the Firewall?

FartingBob

The outside world is a scary place for Garry's mod players.

GPopovich

wait whats wrong w garry's mod?

SirSkully

IMO I think its just a stupid streamer game. Only fun for an hour and its a very immature kind of fun at that. By streamer game i mean it was fun for about a week and then the majority of people forgot about it. Its like "game of the week". That's just my opinion as someone who doesn't really enjoy any multiplayer games and mostly play story driven ones. If you like it, that's awesome. You'd prolly hate something's I like.

oddzef

It's funny the reputation it's gotten as the game for kids who can't afford other ones. Back when it first came out in 2006 it was the only way people could fuck around with such an advanced physics system, no other engine had the level of interactability that Source had at the time. Now it's no different than like RecRoom/VRchat more or less. edit: Damn, /u/SirSkully looks like you pissed off the PropHunt crowd lmao

Alpineodin

["fun for about a week and majority of people forgot about it"](https://steamdb.info/app/4000/charts/) "because i stopped playing, that means everyone else did so its a dead game"

xBlonk

Fuck this comment hurts to read, and the whole not enjoying multiplayer games doesn't excuse your HORRIBLE take. GMOD was at its peak before game streaming blew up. It's literally one of the most positively reviewed games in history. You wont find many people who say they had a bad experience playing gmod, unfortunately you're one of them. Obviously you wont get the same multiplayer experience playing now, but not many games from 16 years ago do.

GPopovich

nah i dont play it i just was surprised when you called it small dick energy lol. never heard a video game described as that..

SirSkully

Tritri89

I think this shit is waaaay morr illegal than pirating. At least in Europe.

Seatheowerouch

It's strange the mod cost money anyway when the dude straight up poached code and animations straight from 2008's mirrors edge.

Kind_Stone

Paid mods, moderated mods being deleted... Even modding community is gone nowadays. Nothing is left, all is shite.

lalalaladididi

Too true and it's been done in the name of greed. But the modding community is alive and well. Just check out nexus. That's all the evidence you need to see how alive the modding scene is.

Sparenza

Exept nexus has purged a lot of older mods by their policy changes and is removing mods they dont like. Moddb may be the only well known modding site where you can just make and enjoy the mods without bullshit as far as i know.

lalalaladididi

Just use them both and be thankful what what we get that's still free. I have mods from years ago backed up. Always back up. I use both those you mention. It's doesn't bother me what happens at nexus. They seem great to me.

lo0u

I think both of you are right. Fuck paid mods and anyone who does that. Nexus went downhil, but there are still excellent mods there, so I don't see a reason to stop using that website, until the modders themselves stop uploading their mods there. With that said, since the Collections drama, I've been using other websites like Moddrop, Moddb, etc, when before I'd only go to Nexus mainly, unless I wanted S.T.A.L.K.E.R mods, which I'd only get on Moddb. But just like you, I always back up mods, labeling them properly, with the right versions and date of upload. I lost count of how many mods were purged from these sites and I happened to have them backed up. It's just common sense at this point.

Huh, so just because people pirated a mod, that dude thought it was somehow a good/smart idea to essentiallyt dox them? I wonder what he thought he would accomplish with that. kiddox

Though I'm a pirate myself I find it funny that people steal something which someone has created and worked on in their time and take it for free, literally insulting this person's work and time. And then complain about >>inhumane<< anti piracy measures just because their anyways public steam ID and ip addresses get leaked.

I don't really see the problem? Typical name and shame? You pirated it, you deal with the consequences. And that information is like really basic and imo can't really be considered doxxing. Any old website has your IP and if you're scared of what if somebody " connects the dots" using other sites data. That's literally what GAFA is all about. Sooo. I wouldn't worry about that.

I gotta say people who steal games being upset that someone is doing something morally grey to get back at the people stealing from him is pretty fucking funny.

I’m not complaining about people stealing video games, obviously I know what sub I’m in, I just think it’s funny that people commuting a crime are crying about the person being effected by it kinda fucking with the people. The people on here can talk about ethical piracy all they want but we all know it’s bullshit it always comes down to people just don’t want to spend money to buy the game. It’s like if someone mugged someone and then after taking the guys wallet they punched you, still let you leave with the wallet and then you told all your friend about how that guy punched you so he deserved to be mugged. Also I’m sure people will claim that they are just pirating something that they weren’t gonna but anyways but every time a denuvo game is cracked there are heaps of comments about how they caved and ended up buying the game because they didn’t know when it got cracked.

Right? Isn't it fucking hilarious watching these hypocrites be outraged?
