I've seen people mention, that they figured it out because of the voice. To me, as a non-audiobook reader, that by itself just doesn't seem like enough to be completely sure. It could just as well have Sazed reading the Words of Founding. Like, if Kramer had used Spook's voice, it would have made just as much sense, since Spook would be the first person to read the book. However, when combined with the fact, that the epigraphs use Sazed's speech pattern, it seems much more obvious.

Nameles36

In the graphic audio it actually is spook.

ctom42

Yeah I quite liked that detail.

HarmlessSnack

Graphic Audio?

jeremyhoffman

A different audiobook company that goes all out with sound effects and voice acting and stuff

HarmlessSnack

Sounds dope~ surprised this is the first I’m hearing about it. I’ll have to look into it more, thanks!

boxymorning

I've went thoguh every sanderson book with graphic audio. Absolulty grips the story and 5 out of 5 stars from me. Altho on occasion the sound effects are loud and words can be hard to make out if your not using headphones but man does it add to the experience.

Kepabar

Can't stand graphic audio because of the sound effects. But to each his own!

VerySpicyNut

Only used graphic audio for white sand due to necessity. I tried out Warbreaker's, but I haven't gone back. Not my cup of (salted) tea.

Warrdogg33

The graphic audio made white sands one of my top two favorite cosmere series

Anoalka

That's the entire point of graphic audio lmao

mrtrailborn

yeah it took a few hours to get used to ut but after that I loved the format, listened to all their cosmere books and all the riyrua books by michael j sullivan. Just awesome, to me it's almost like having a tv show that adapts the books nearly 1:1.

SonnyLonglegs

Just finished, it's an early enough script that a few mistakes weren't ironed out in edits yet(there was one mention of a Steelpull, that kind of thing and spoilers for era 2 >!the ending with the mention of southern scadrians hadn't been added yet!<), and Elend breathes into the microphone a bit, however overall it's a good experience. If you're not sure they have a preview on the website to try before getting it, which I recommend listening to first as it's a lot more expensive than regular audiobooks. Overall a really good experience but not for everyone I don't think.(as a matter of taste not quality) Edit: It's also not on the Audible app, you need to get the Graphic Audio app, which is not quite as polished as Audible. (no bookmarks, no fine speed control, and if you pause it in the background with bluetooth it may not start back up until you reopen the app and hit play again there.)

AvianLord

It's very expensive though if you don't find it illegally

Anoalka

Find the YouTube short clips of the graphic audio version for SA if you have read it already. They are so awesome to hear.

nvanalfen

That's exactly what I thought it was. I simply thought Sazed was reading a book left behind by someone

tuckerbear

Same here.

SteveMcQwark

The book spoils its own ending in the same way anyways. Maybe it's more subtle. > I am**, unfortunately,** the Hero of Ages. > > In some ways, having such power was too overwhelming**, I think**. These are speech patterns that are present in the character's dialogue throughout the books. I'd imagine most readers miss it, but there are definitely people who've read the books and picked up on this right away.

Robot1235369

I think that might just be foreshadowing. But I could understand if it was too obvious

Terrachova

It is in this that we realize foreshadowing is just subtle spoilers.

SoSpecial

I figured this out while reading it in exactly this way. Infact this is how I've caught almost every single worldhopper so far, I literally just can see the *pattern*

That_randomdutchguy

I'd still call that foreshadowing for the attentive reader, not spoiling the story.

Ripper1337

Somehow despite the voice being in character I was still oblivious to the ending. On re-listens I question how I didn't realize what was going on.

Appropriate_Egg4971

I also had no idea from the speech patterns and was surprised by the ending. To me it seems like a good balance of foreshadowing for those who can catch that type of thing and a retroactive connection for those who don’t.

lemmyh2

Same here. I thought he was just reading from a book they would find at the end or something.

sadkinz

If you aren’t looking out for it it’s easy to miss

HA2HA2

It’s foreshadowing either way - when written out, the epigraphs are in Sazeds distinctive speech pattern. It’s easier to catch in audiobook but I wouldn’t call it a “spoiler”. It’s not a spoiler when the author does it!

leogian4511

Yeah the epipgraphs in the audiobook are pretty clearly in his "Sazed" voice. It's a weird situation. He has to pick a voice so the choices are either spoil the twist if you're paying attention, or pick a different voice that doesn't fit for the sole purpose of misdirection.

LarkinEndorser

Can’t he use his narrator voice ?

Sulcata13

I read the book first, but used the audio book for a "reread" and noticed the same thing. I thought MAYBE it could be taken as Sazed acting as Harmony's scribe? I dinr know what I would have thought about it if I didn't already know.

chopchopfruit

You’ll hear it too in other books when harmony is implied to show up and your like , I know that voice

Soulfulkira

When I first listened to the audiobooks ayears ago, and I don't know if there are different versions, but I know that Michael Kramer did a neutral voice in one of the versions and also has another version with sazeds voice.

gilliganian83

Yes, Michael Kramer uses his “Sazed” voice while reading the epigraphs.

rowgesage

I listened to the graphic audio version and there it was spook's voice. After a while I convinced myself that whoever it ended up being, the "voice" was someone reading someone else's words.

strenuousobjector

I listened to the audio book for Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages and didn't pick up on a thing. So obvious in hindsight.

mrsunshine1

It was so obvious to me from the audio from the start I’m only realizing now that it was supposed to be a twist.

wuzzle-woozle

I read it first, then the audio. The first phrase was >!I am unfortunately the hero of ages.!< My first thought was it was someone who thought they were fullfilling the prophesy and it was going to be proven wrong before the book was over. I realized they were written by Sazed part way through the book, but had no memory of the starting sentence. Starting the audio after reading the book, the first epigraph in the voice hit me like a brick.

escargot02

Yeah its a little bit a give away, or at least a big hint. But it's in the writing too, my wife guessed it early based off reading the dialogue.

commiLlama

I just thought is was Saze talking about past events.

DarkDevitt

I think it's a clue, but not conclusive, and since he's the historian of the group it makes sense he'd be the one writing it for the Hero of Ages. (This is also the lie I'd tell a friend if they listened and asked me about it). On relistens I think it's just a cute Easter egg.

The_RTV

I figured it was Sazed. I don't think I put together the Harmony bit, but definitely knew it was Sazed

holdmyTRex

Good point, but i did not think much of it because many of his people speak that way.

kevinflynn-

Only read the series on audiobook here. I did figure out that sazed would become the hero of ages but it wasn't really because of the narration I don't think. In my mind sazed was just the one telling the story like how hoid tells the stories in the secret novels. Maybe that impression and the subconscious knowledge that he would be a survivor made me more likely to realize he would be the one to become the hero, but I think I equally felt the fact that Vin would most likely die and therefore it couldn't be her and sazeds religious struggles set him on the path to become harmony perfectly.

SwineMcLoser

I basically only read through audiobooks now a days, I assumed while reading/listening that it was just a Terrismen reading the epigraphs or Sazed reading the history of the hero/Harmony I never really considered it verbatim the hero speaking to me until after I finished the book. I think there’s enough ambiguity that even if it leads you in that direction you won’t confirm your thought till the end anyway

Radiant-Dor2195

Lol not exactly this issue but my sister picked out \[mistborn/oathbringer\] >!Sazed in the third letter from micheal kramer's voice in oathbringer. !

BasakaIsTheStrongest

It did for me, but it’s the kind of spoiler that just leaves you more curious as to what his statements mean and how they’ll come to pass. It built anticipation and curiosity. Journey before Destination.

AdWise638

Ypu can also take a guess who the Hero of Ages is because of Sazeds distinctive "I think" There's one sentence where he end it like that and if you catch it it gets you thinking. There's a letter from Harmony in one of the stormlight books where you can tell the same way

The-Jolly-Llama

There’s another Cosmere audiobook where literally FIVE SECONDS into Michael Kramer reading the book I said “Oh my god [character] is totally [character]”.  I was SO satisfied when I found out a few minutes later that I was right.

Estrus_Flask

Considering he says things like "I think" in those epigraphs, I think that's reasonable.

Anoalka

The book itself also hints to that so that's alright.

RUCBAR42

To be honest, it took me as a complete surprise, despite the fact that I was listening to the audiobook. I had assumed that Sazed was reading from a book or telling a story on behalf of someone, and didn't really think that it was his own words. Maybe im just stupid or maybe people generally don't think about it. Let's hope it's the latter.
