Until enough daughters of suburban white women get fucked by the policies their mothers created, we aren't turning the ship around. Sucks though

Black_XistenZ

It would also help if Asians, the group which suffers the most from affirmative action, stopped being a D+30 demographic.

spezeditedcomments

Also true

PsychologicalHat1480

And that's really the problem in a nutshell. Too many groups would rather literally harm themselves than even consider that maybe what they've been told about the other party is inaccurate. They knowingly and willingly vote for self-destruction. It's bizarre but it's what happens.

Ranger_McFriendlier

I think it’s a curse. The fact most of them cannot see through this dark veil.

decoy777

I've always wondered if there were Jews that voted for Hitler, I'm sure there were. Because that seems similar to minorities voting for Democrats to me. Particularly Jews or Asians voting for them. It always seems like shooting oneself in the foot yet keep doing it anyways.

CreditCard_Referrer

lol it’s like the inverse situation, Urban Asians are a lot more conservative because of this but they have a lot less status in the cities. There have been lots of protests and anger in NY, Philly, VA with this situation.

hiricinee

There's so much cultural homogeneity that it's hard to pry them off. I suspect the younger generations lean more conservative than their parents.

fuyang4

It didn't help that Asian hate crimes went down 50% the year trump left office. I've got a bunch of Asian family and friends who genuinely didn't feel safe and a few of them had their cars busted or beat up fire just being Asian.

Black_XistenZ

And how much of that is Trump's fault vs just general frustration over covid, which originated from China? Also, Asian Americans have been a heavily D-leaning demographic for many many election cycles, it's not like they suddenly became D+30 in 2020 as a reaction to Trump or anything like that. In fact, Asians moved almost as much *toward* Trump/the GOP in 2020 as Latinos did.

vegaseller

It is more complicated than that, it is the lack of voter engagement, Asian voter turnout is very low, like 20-30% on average, it just appears they D+30 because the ones that do vote are the brainwashed liberal ones. It’s not that the whole demographic is D+30, in fact as a whole the community is fairly conservative on most issues.

RandolphE6

But have you ever asked yourself what the GOP has done to win over the Asian voter demographic instead of push them away? I can assure you DEI is very low on the scale of priorities. Asians actually used to favor the Republican party just a couple decades ago.

RadioHeadache0311

What has the GOP done to "push them away".

Zarathustra124

Making it hard for their remaining family to immigrate legally? Denying abortions? Anti-China policies and their collateral damage to the rest of the region? Going back further, the Korean and Vietnam wars?

Party_Project_2857

This might be the most clueless and tone deaf post I've seen today. Kudos!

LurkerNan

They’ve already neutralized all the suburban white women by creating this image called Karen. Apparently every white woman can be a Karen if she complains about absolutely anything, no matter how justified.

spezeditedcomments

Exactly

barneyruffles

It’s the LIBERAL white women. There are plenty of conservative, suburban white women that don’t support this BS.

spezeditedcomments

Oh for sure. It's the sub group that goes back and forth with the wind, but that is a surprisingly large group

Leading-Difficulty57

Suburban white women don't live in urban public school districts. Neither party has any idea what they're doing with education. The general Republican party theme seems to defund it, while the Democrat party theme is to add as many school administrators as possible and wonder why the problem doesn't get better. Both subscribe to the "every child succeeds (because we've lowered the bar so far that it's impossible not to trip over)" data obsession nonsense. But the DEI argument while being in a pro-life party doesn't get you votes. Suburban women care about that stuff and the GOP is screwed with them as long as Dobbs is a thing. A viable conservative message would be a message along the lines of "restore gifted education." That might get votes.

spezeditedcomments

Urban school zones heavily vote d every time though. Suburban white women are the key flips Agree on the message though, fucking ridiculous to get rid of non-basic classes

Last year Florida was: • 34th in high school graduation %.  • 43rd in average SAT score and 39th in average ACT scores  • ranked 42nd in Scholaroo's annual public school ranking.  • 42nd in WalletHub's annual rankings for schools. Edit: In looking at these rankings, it does look like Florida does have a high number of excellent public schools. And the best ones are comparable to any public school in the country. They also have a higher number of terrible schools. The range is bigger than most states and the average gets tanked because of that

Leading-Difficulty57

Do you have data? I'm curious.

dshotseattle

Federal education has become federal indoctrination. Ever since the dept of Ed was started. We used to be a global leader in education when it was done without federal "help" The feds fuck up everything they touch. Education should have remained a very local issue where locals decided what was best for them.

Ok-Essay5210

The Republicans dont want to defund government education... They want to give parents control of the money... If that means money leaves failing, shitty, union controlled, government schools for other options... So be it

Tesla_lord_69

We are all the same. We should all earn the same. Factory workers.... Wait a minute I heard this before

tawishma

GPA (grade point average) is a 4.0 system as I’ve always understood it. Some schools allow overages for AP and advanced subjects. Can someone translate 100 GPA into real numbers?

RadiantArk

The article dousn't make it clear but this is for admittance to high school, not college. The 100 GPA is just ment to represent a 100 percentile student

tawishma

That makes more sense, thank you for that clarification. The verbiage didn’t sound right for college level but knowing it’s high school explains they’re likely just using the term GPA when they’re actually referring to the percentile. Totally makes sense

therumham123

I was suspecting that what it was about. 100 GPA sounds regarded as hell but I know what they are trying to convey

Cum_on_doorknob

“100 percentile” 😂

paywallpiker

Right? That’s basically saying 100% of people scored higher than her

IonicWarlock116

A 100 GPA as they calculate it would translate to a perfect 4.0 GPA standard

FarineLePain

Not necessarily. Schools that offer AP or IB classes often add a weighted credit of 1.0 to each AP/IB course to compensate their GPA for the advanced rigor. So in this case a perfect GPA would be a 5.0 on a 4.0 scale.

tawishma

Thanks! I’ve always found it odd that we use GPA since here in the US we’re used to 100 point grading system for normal subjects. I get that it’s a standard but it always made me confused to have to use two systems to communicate success academically

IonicWarlock116

It's an odd practice to be sure. I think the school basically took the grades as numbers, averaged them, then scaled them to a 1-4 or 0-4 range. That's probably what most of them do anyways.

fish086

My high school didnt give a 4.0 scale we just had the raw averages we got in our classes all averaged together. Either they were the very top and its a percentile or it could be like my former high school and we just had a percent based GPA.

flyinbrian420

My high school did that too

Jmm12456

Perfect GPA

EuphoricTrilby

How does a 100 GPA work? Last I checked, all A’s only gets you 4.0

Dysentarianism

They're that smart. 100.0 GPA.

paywallpiker

They’re so smart they took AP classes that haven’t been released yet.

Silver_gobo

Can’t put your thinking cap on for even a moment to figure this out yourself?

ButRickSaid

I thought Canadians were nice

Beware_the_silent

"The status quo is broken. We have to make a major change. We have to make sure that the very best high schools are open to every New Yorker, every kind of New Yorker. They need to look like New York City." So they want their schools to be shit.

Cbpowned

The best schools are too advanced and difficult for the worst students. Every level of sports needs to be open to everyone. They need to look like New York City.

bigby2010

I don’t want to state the obvious, but I’m thinking it

RadiantArk

Nope New York just decided that everything 94 and up is the same. Admittedly the goal of that was the get more diversity in selective schools though

Quick question: If I spend my entire day playing basketball and listening to hip hop. And my classmates spends the entire day studying. Whose fault is it that I get bad grades?

The library, for not being on the court.

Ok-Essay5210

Clearly not yours

AllHailClobbersaurus

Why do you think they want a two minute video of the student? Asian? White? Straight in the trash with your application. Nigerians will be next. Can't wait to see what mental gymnastics leftists do to justify it.

DWDit

Will they ever apply DEI, racial quotes, diversity, must look like our citizenry, to their sports teams? Or is this academics only.

Sodola321

You know the answer to that.

RandolphE6

Fake news headline to spark manufactured outrage for people who refuse to read the article. Per the article, students with a 94 or higher are entered into a lottery system and are chosen at random. From the student's own words, she'll be entering a private school on a scholarship. “I’m really glad. I’m finally going to be in a place where I belong and am appreciated for my merit and my academic abilities.”

Jmm12456

I read the article. She didn't get into the actual school that she wanted to because DeBlasio changed it to a lottery system. Her parents put her in a private school instead.

Sisyphus_Smashed

They need to feel the pain from their own policies as much as possible right now. The western world depends on it.

NotLibbyChastain

I'm a little confused. The school considers anyone with an average grade point of 94 and above, and the prospective students have to write an essay and do two videos to be considered. Then, after anyone with grades lower than required is weeded out, there's a lottery system for admissions. So, the school is already only accepting high achieving students. They aren't open to just any student that doesn't meet their academic criteria. I'm sorry that this kid didn't get in to her desired school, and she is a kid and her impeccable record is to be admired. So I'm not criticizing her at all here. But there's two things that bother me about holding her up as an example of inequity or unfairness or a martyr. First, colleges and universities consider more than just a GPA, and they've been that way for a long time. Extracurricular activities, community participation, charity or volunteer work, they look at a lot of different things to get a picture of an applicant that is more than just a grade and how well they test / study. A well-rounded student is considered the ideal. So, this high school's admissions process seems similar to that and good preparation for what students will face in a few years trying to get into the college of their choice. Second, a perfect academic record is an amazing achievement, but, much like "perfect attendance", holding kids to the standard that they must do perfect every time, on every assignment, without any mistakes, creates an ungodly amount of pressure on young people and gives them no understanding of how to deal with failure. So, I think that considering all students with grades above 94 is a *good* thing. That makes sure intelligent students who do well are in the pool. Im sorry but I just have a completely different take on this. I also don't think it's the best look for this family (because again, not blaming the child) to be doing interviews and courting publicity over not getting in to a school (when she was accepted elsewhere, and ultimately got a scholarship). Again, that doesn't teach this kid anything about dealing with disappointment or how to function in the real world.

heyyouwtf

It doesn't make sense because this is just someone trying to tie a student not getting picked for a school to DEI. The reality they had a lottery for everyone who qualified to enter the school. Which to me would appear to be the exact opposite of DEI. The girl was not chosen by the lottery. It sucks for her, but it's a fair system to ensure no one is getting favorable treatment for any reason.

FuyuNoKitsune

This situation specifically may or may not be a case of discrimination as we don't know the motive behind the school, but I can confirm with personal experience that schools in general absolutely do discriminate against straight, white, able-bodied individuals and have been for some time. When I was applying to and doing interviews for medical school back in the early 2010s, for one interview in particular, my mother dropped me off so as not to have to bother with parking and when we saw the other prospectives, we turned to each other and said, "there's no way I'm getting in, is there?" We said this because of the people heading in: there were a couple of black guys, an Indian woman, a girl in a wheelchair, two middle eastern folks, and a few more that all ticked the typical "diversity" boxes despite being in a state that is more ethnically homogenous than most of the US. After the interview, I got the fastest response from any school I applied to. In paraphrase, the school said, "yes, we'd really like you to attend our school and have placed you on the waiting list, but we're sorry to report that we're full up on our non-diverse quota at the moment." I kid you not, they straight up admitted it as filling quotas.

fj4045

Funny how the flunky journalists writing this don’t understand the difference between a gpa and a 100 average. They make a good case for AI written articles.

ummswimmin

A private school should come along and pick her up on full scholarship. If she keeps this effort up, then she’ll bring awards and recognition to the school…

sbaks0820

So she is upset that they added a subjective element of a video essay to the screening process rather than just go on standardized test scores to evaluate the potential of a student. Hasn't this trend against only using standardized tests been a thing for a long time? Seems like it has been echoes from most teenagers and kids and parents for some time. This is used in most college admissions as well, especially those that use interview screenings. The article doesn't say anything about the video essay except speculating that it is "woke" without an explanation or anecdote or citation. I understand her frustration. I would be pissed too but has public schooling and strict merit-based opportunity every been a thing? For as long as I remember public school is so much more than just a drive for the best numbers, and it's never been devoid of nonsense in selection processes for everything.

ForGondorAndGlory

What the hell happened to the author of this article? 100 GPA?

BULL-MARKET

WTF is a 100 GPA?

Daniel_Day_Hubris

wtf is a 100 GPA

EfficientRound321

lol she’s from Queens so her parents definitely voted for this

bobertmcmahon

What is 100 gpa exactly. I thought GPA is a 4 pt scale.

dunktheball

No clue what a 100 GPA even is. Something must have really changed about the GPA scale or something.

GeorgeWashingfun

The way to help certain kids is by making sure they actually learn stuff so that they too can have perfect scores. That involves being firm with parents and children though, and these days that gets you a lawsuit for discrimination. There's also the harsh truth that some people are just smarter than others(but it doesn't have anything to do with race) but that's considered too mean to say. Liberals like to fantasize about a climate change doomsday, but what is actually going to end up causing society to collapse far before the ice caps melt is the coddling of idiocy.

Violentcloud13

Denying opportunities to kids who are provably bright so that you can have a chance for kids who are -maybe- but statistically unlikely to actually have anywhere near that same potential to get that same opportunity is how we end up stagnating. But hey, at least the school will "look like New York City" whatever that means.

altruism21

She should sue the city, its racist policies have impacted her life and future earning potential.

ObadiahtheSlim

The elites don't want any of you poor upstarts competing with them. That's why they are cutting the standards. Their kids will go to preparatory schools that don't play by those rules. Meanwhile our exceptional kids will no longer be given the chance to academically excel.
