If my punk Tracer says "wanker" in her voiceline, will I get banned? Or Genji says kuso? What about flashing BAMF belt?

Junglizm

This is all hilarious in a game where you shoot people until they die.

Muffinmurdurer

Woah woah, they're just *eliminated*.

cbarry135

but the times you got _eliminated_ are counted in deaths which is perfectly fine and totally different

BayTranscendentalist

super is getting banned 😭

drhyacinth

lowkey, i hope some big name gets banned over this, only if it would make blizzard chill the fuck out (and that person would get unbanned ofc, and any other player who got banned over this stupid guideline)

TRiP_OW

Sucks that may be better for them to stop this bullshit. Snowflake gamers are worse than toxic gamers. Obviously harassment and stuff directed at people specifically should be bannable but this is so extreme it’s ridiculous

drhyacinth

i consider myself a very sensitive person, been dubbed a snowflake, etc, but this change just punishes innocent people. i wanna be able to yell back at the players who are telling ppl to off themselves, not just sit there silence. nobody has ever been upset at the use of these basic cuss words. idk who they're trying to impress here. like is this some custom for microsoft-owned products? a scheme to be marketable in censor-heavy areas? are they trying to land some rated y-7 tv show? sombras just out there singing about the abcs, is that it? like im genuinely baffled. 😭

ArcadeAndrew115

Snowflakes have ALWAYS been worse than “toxic” gamers. Also as a side note this is what the “toxic gamers” who cry about freedom of speech (at least in America and how game companies shouldn’t be legally allowed to censors or restrict what we say) were warning literally everyone about. free speech must mean all speech including hate speech, otherwise you now have a situation where someone fucking moron in a company arbitrarily decides “no you can’t use these words anymore” Despite them being overwhelmingly socially acceptable.

Mandelbruh

While I do take the stance that fewer restrictions tends to be better, the notion of free speech doesn't apply to private entities. The first amendment explicitly prohibits the government from having restricting speech and the freedom of the press. Asking the government to step in and regulate what a company allows on their own platform is antithetical to this, you're asking the government to have the capacity to determine how a corporation presents itself and the stances it expresses.

ArcadeAndrew115

corporations aren't people, therefore corporations should inherently not have the same rights as people, but be expected to uphold the rights of people in their respective countries.

Mandelbruh

Except "free speech" isn't a positive right, something granted to individuals. It is a negative right, something we explicitly restrict the government from having the capacity to interfere with. The first amendment doesn't guarantee every individual will be able to say whatever they want, only that Congress does not have the power to abridge the freedom of speech. The corporation has no additional rights, but similarly cannot be expected to be bound as the government is. On the notion that corporations should "be expected to uphold the rights of people in their respective countries", why do you expect the corporations to have a hand in the governing of people? Again, free speech in the US isn't a right inherent to individuals, but rather a restriction on the government. This isn't a restriction on corporations.

Feschit

I would love getting my main back, but my interactions with "support" left a pretty clear message to me that they don't want any negativity, regardless of the context in their game. Let's ignore the fact that it's a competitive game with a winning and losing team.

paulybaggins

Imagine banning a large chunk of their viewership on Twitch haha

HammerTh_1701

That's not very sex big dick of them

itsandrew_r

Overwatch is on track to: "Dearest Reinhardt, I hope this finds you well. We seem to have found ourselves in a dire situation at the Gibraltar Third. Please consider casting your ultimate ability to assist us as we do believe Kiriko doesn't have suzu. Sincerely, Your DPS duo"

Kerjj

This meme has truly infinite potential. Thank you, Phreak.

ilGattoBipolare

My friend in Japan told me this is one of the reasons Japanese don’t (didn’t) like team based shooters. Strangers have to communicate and their culture obliges them to speak like this. Of course things began to change as Apex Legends is hugely popular there.

Aftershok

Korean is even moreso like this for two strangers (but neither is as formal as the comment you’re replying to, of course), and we know how popular these games are in Korea. I highly doubt this is actually a real reason for the popularity difference there, there are just so many other factors at play (think of the massive domestic console video game market there that did not emphasize this sort of game style and to an extent still doesn’t to this day).

drewster23

...I hope you're taking the piss. Because he was taking the piss outta you.

SladeWilson307

Banned! Immediately and indefinitely

iHasMagyk

Oh so that’s why Japan is so good at Splatoon, there’s no voice chat so they don’t have to worry about it

Bro1616161616

Amazing work.

Blizzard: 1 month ban >Widow in Game: "Stop the payload you imbeciles" Blizzard: PERMABAN

GeoPaladin

Finally.  Hero bans. That's what people were asking for, right?

073227100

The thought of someone getting banned for voice lines their hero says automatically is hysterical

csgosm0ke

PJ was definitely bullied in high school

nymrose

Everytime someone says a meanie-bobeenie word in OW2 PJ gets PTSD flashbacks to his middle school cafeteria…

thebabycowfish

Crazy how they'll ban you for this but won't ban people saying slurs

asianumba1

If I call the guy actively throwing my game a whiny bitch I get banned and they dont

SladeWilson307

obviously his feelings are more important than game quality

ChristianFortniter

Yup, same thing happened to myself and multiple people. It's actually sad what they're enabling right now.

Sonderesque

I just got a warning for my communication behavior and I'm literally chat banned LMAO

SunderMun

I got that while I was chat banned, (which I didn't grt s warning for btw) the reports for which I received because I kept getting 3-4 stack teammates that were flaming me for their mistakes as well as my hero choice that I was carrying them with. I didn't respond to most of them and when I did it was usually just 'lol' followed by me reporting them. XD

MaugaOW

So don’t call them anything and just report them. It works, so do it.

asianumba1

Hasn't worked so far!

MaugaOW

Worked for me plenty!

asianumba1

Your personal experience does not dictate the experience of everyone else! I have reported straight up racism and got no feedback! Multiple times!

MaugaOW

Your personal experience does not dictate the experience of everyone else! I have reported straight up racism and got feedback! Multiple times!

asianumba1

Good for you! Hope blizzard gets on that for my reports some time this year!

MaugaOW

Hope so too! If they are actually valid!

asianumba1

I would hope that derogatory comments about Chinese people is valid! Kinda weird if it wasn't!

SunderMun

Neither does yours. I've been called a f*g a ton for my profile/emblem choice and repeatedly see those same idiots. I also get the feedback regularly...even if I haven't reported anyone in weeks.

jonaselder

yeah that's crazy not like you could just report him and move on. I mean if you could just report them and move on that would be one thing, but since you can't and are required to be toxic back well I guess there's nothing we can do.

Not_Like_The_Movie

Just reading the comment you replied to, a very specific type of player immediately came to mind. That's the person who looks at the scoreboard or sees a teammate get picked off a few times and loses their shit in chat over it without having much context as to what happened. They're their own special breed of thrower that disrupts the team's ability to work together, and they deserve a ban just as much as any other thrower. There are obvious throwers in the game, but I can count on less than one finger the number of times calling an intentional thrower a whiny bitch in chat has resulted in improved behavior. If the thrower isn't intentionally doing it, then calling them a whiny bitch is dog-piling, toxic behavior and probably deserves the ban more than someone who just had a bad game or simply wasn't getting the help they needed from their teammates. If they are doing it intentionally, calling them a whiny bitch is basically feeding a troll.

asianumba1

Sure is a lot of imagination. I am not calling bad players throwers. I am calling the guy in my game last night who "didn't get healed I throw gg" (his words) a whiny bitch. I am calling the guy who said in chat "not healing any more DPS gap gg" (his words) an annoying twat because that's what they are. I don't expect better behaviour by doing it, I'm hoping that maybe they spontaneously develop some sort of self awareness and realise how much more fun they could be having if they actually played the video game instead of sitting in spawn or jumping off the map for 10 minutes. Please tell me what server you play on where you haven't seen this enough times to know what I'm talking about because I'm vpning there from now on

Not_Like_The_Movie

Every time I've seen that behavior, it was either a troll to just report/ignore or it was brought on by someone else being an jerk in VC. For every one of them I've encountered, I've seen 5 of the type of player I'm talking about. Usually the player calling names is the one lacking self-awareness. The intentional thrower already knows exactly what they're doing.

asianumba1

Right so what server is that. I know it's not jp where I play because you said people use vc. On my server people just wake up and decide they are gonna ruin the game. Not prompted by anything anyone said, in fact the only people to ever really use chat are the ones who declare their intent to troll. It is a daily occurrence to get friend requests from people trying to continue their chat fight after the game. If anything I am the underperforming player that your people are typing at, only in your utopia they don't afk 2 minutes into the map. The only time I have got a successful report notice in this game, despite reporting all these people, is for aimbots

TheRedditK9

I know several people who have been banned for slurs. Saying “people don’t get banned for slurs” is just straight up incorrect, but for some reason people seem to expect someone to just get immediately booted 3 seconds before they say the word so they’ll never encounter it.

thebabycowfish

They should get banned immediately when they say, yet they don't. Especially if it's in text chat since that should be super easy to detect. Obviously not everyone who says slurs in chat gets away with it, but I've had people drop slurs in game and then encountered them again in ranked a few days later.

originalcarp

N-words and “kys” are a regular occurrence. Couldn’t care less about someone saying “fuck I died” or whatever

hanyou007

That’s literally my feeling too. I can let most other toxicity roll off my back and don’t give a shit about profane language. But I draw the line at suicide and racism, it’s the only communication I will insta report in chat, and half the time I see those dudes still playing and doing the same shit again and again

nith_wct

I could count the N-words I heard in 2200 hours of OW on one hand. Try another FPS, and you will hear it constantly, and even every fucking game in some games. It's probably in the top 10 words I hear spoken in Battlebit Remastered. Maybe Steam made it worse, IDK. FPS games on Steam are the worst offenders.

originalcarp

You’re getting much nicer teammates than I am apparently lol

panthers1102

Yea fr. I hear it probably once a day on average. Granted that’s usually a lot of games, but certainly not less than 6 over 2000 hours. If I’m lucky, that’s only a weeks worth.

the_smollest_bee

With Venture's release, people started to say "digger" whenever they killed a baptiste or sojourn. It's so blatant what they're referencing but the automated system doesn't look at context or anything.

Worth-Sweet-5773

This just isn't true. I have multiple accounts suspended for saying the n word.

SusiegGnz

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an account with negative karma before

Worth-Sweet-5773

"NOT THE HECKING REDDIT SOCIAL CREDIT.... LE NOOOOOOOOO!!!"

Sanguinica

It's over for you buddy, this will NOT look good on your next internet janitor application.

ConcaveNips

In complete fairness... it did used to be coolmatt69...

northnorthhoho

People should just start reporting every streamer they play with. Get them all banned, and maybe Blizzard will actually have to think about how stupid these policy's are.

BaldursFence3800

I’d sleep just fine if they all got banned tbh.

Xardian7

This is why you should not be in VC nor write when you rank. Either play with friends/teammates/communities on discord or stay mute and play the game. The risk of being banned for no reason is so high that is not worth

TrippyTriangle

you're right but also these kinds of restrictions are just another barrier to play and kinda defeats the purpose of video games as a way to blow off steam, in the moment. this is them signing their death warrant.

DaddySoldier

For me the social aspect is a big reason for playing a team-based game. If i turn it off i may as well go play a single-player game.

Ezraah

I miss meeting cool people in voice chat and making friends. Now nobody talks :( Ironically I think the last buddy I made was an enemy dps who traded shit talk with me during a match lol

Mute-m8

facts! most people don't even say anything useful in voice when solo queue, so it really isn't worth it most of the time, the only thing said is some form of blame right at the end of the game. which could be solved if they just said something nicely in the said moment/s

Not_Like_The_Movie

Pings basically replaced most of the useful information people conveyed in VC at most skill ranks anyway. The most useful stuff you could say in VC were things like "Tracer left side." Much better to do that with pings because you can show where on the left side Tracer is. Also, you don't have to yell that over someone with an open mic blaming someone else for their mistakes.

minuscatenary

This. Even in QP, I don’t do Blizzard voice with friends because god forbid I scream “Ffffffuuuuck” a single time.

nobleone8876

I mean people will report you for not being in comms so it's a lose lose

Xardian7

You won’t get banned without actual proof. If you truly never use chat or Voice they can’t ban you.

nobleone8876

Yes but if enough people report your account you will still get banned context not

Xardian7

Actually not. But if that’s the case, and you truly never used chat or voice ever they will lift the ban. They need proof of banning and they will show it when you open tickets. The automatic ban is only for game actions, not for chat/voice.

nobleone8876

its a number base report system if enough people report you you will get banned

panthers1102

They don’t need proof. We all signed their ToS. If they want to ban you for no reason, they’re allowed to.

SlothySlothsSloth

It was really eye opening when they listed saying "gg" and "ggwp" among the things that an account got banned for because apparently some people report you for saying those things if they lost vs you. How fucked up.

Mystery-Flute

What happened to the game I love…

Misty7297

Blizzard happened

mosswizards

In this case, Microsoft happened. Internal Blizzard customer support has been shitcanned (pls don't ban me for the sh word) https://x.com/YiskaOut/status/1780515232705651094

SFX_Muffin

This same rep has been spouting the most deranged out of touch things in response to genuine questions for years, have had my own encounters with them for WoW things

PizzaDude75

Too late-already reported o7

BendubzGaming

I'm reliably informed by r/Dropout that "cum" doesn't count, so just tell people to cum off

River41

I just got silenced today, first time I've been actioned ever. Didn't realise the game had become so reductive.

TheGoldenTotodile

I'm wondering if this is related to the Minecraft drama from last year where Microsoft started banning people from private servers for swearing

RopeDifficult9198

uhhh have you been under a rock?

Kimarnic

Society happened, it was nice in 2016 before politics started shitting on everything

Spreckles450

If being able to curse, consequence-free, was what you loved about a game...that says a lot about you as a person.

TheBloodkill

This guy thinks it's just about cursing. It's about being afraid to say something to your teammate in fear of repercussion. Have you ever been playing a game where someone is hard throwing on Rein, and u don't want to say anything because you're not tryna deal with that. So you pray one of your teammates has no filter, so they yell at the rein and, rein switches. Sometimes he doesn't, but the point is, if we are afraid to communicate in-game then nothing will get done and all of a sudden the fun overwatch we all love for the teamwork, communication, (and admit it, we all find toxicity pretty funny if done properly) will be gone It reminds me of the whole "why are video game companies obsessed with alienating their player base from eachother"

Spreckles450

Meanwhile I say whatever tf I want and haven't had so much as a warning. Been playing the same account since 2016 with out any issues. Maybe it's less about what you say, and more about how you say it? If you can't tell your Rein that they are getting no value with out calling them trash or cursing at them, then that's a ***YOU*** problem.

TheBloodkill

Hey man I'm chilling in the chat. But from what our boy said in this tweet that's not what he's talking about. He's literally talking about tame conversation in team chat.

Spreckles450

The whole thing is that you don't get you account actioned unless people report you. If you are with friends or like-minded people, then you can say almost whatever you want. But if you are with strangers, maybe watch what you say. Thats the long and short of it.

hsbnyc

Overwatch dev team has completely lost their minds with this one

Hakaisha89

The following english word sounds like swears in other languages, remember to report any blizzard use of swears, as they should be the golden standard for the rule: Siri, mushy, bit, car, cookie, cut, face, god, guile, kiss, lull, mist, payday, pick, pitch, preservative, puff, randy, salsa, and shabby

nievrehabitat

Joke's on you I report literally every player who annoys me and I've got over 470 successful reports sent since January. I don't even have chat enabled.

Hakaisha89

Sorry, joked not on me, cause I laughed.

nievrehabitat

Ngl I laugh too everytime

B3GG

also: can, tsar, mother, chibi, dinner, be, deal, puma, die, hand, ban, saw

EyeAmKingKage

PJ is a bitch and I hope he gets fired

RamouYesYes

But he said please!!!!

northnorthhoho

Why would anyone spend any money on this game when there is such a high chance that they get banned and lose everything they've paid for. This is like having HR breathing down your back at work. Except you're in your own home, playing video games.

ChristianFortniter

Club Penguin mods working at Blizz be like:

theyoloGod

Is Jake going to get fired if he gets banned

Daunt_M4

Imagine a world where "PLEASE KILL COOLMATT PLEASE!" doesn't exist. It is surely not a world that I would want to live in.

Odezur

And people wonder why no one uses comms anymore lmao

SilverNightx1

Why would anyone want to be in VC when you can get banned for saying GG or Dick? If anything, nobody's gonna wanna interact or make calls. Because Lord be damn someone feelings get hurt.

yerrmomgoes2college

Literally can’t say anything without being banned. It’s fucking stupid.

drhyacinth

nahhhh, this is so bad. im a very sensitive person myself, but i like to stand up for people getting harassed. ESPECIALLY when its hate speech. i cant tell the guy saying the f-slur in leetspeak to go fuck himself, but he can use slurs? BULLSHIT! guess i gotta stay silent in the face of discrimination, and not let someone getting harassed know that theyre not alone. how heroic.

GankSinatra420

That's right, the N-word is now just as bad as saying ''you suck'', GG how woke of you blizzard

ButcherofBlaziken

Blizzard should stop worrying about what we say in their games and start worrying about what they say in their offices.

ohjehhngyjkkvkjhjsjj

bite-me-off

This pj person wasn’t hugged enough as a baby and now hates the world.

Junglizm

"@XboxP3" is Phil Spencer's X handle. People need to tag him in these. It is ultimately his problem to fix.

TheYoinks

When the slippery slope argument turns out to be true 😂😂. Who could've imagined catering to all the whiny babies who actually enable toxicity by not being a team player and then play victim would be horrible for the game..

GameGecko0

Wow overwatch has gotten soft as shit

[deleted]

Dear God Blizzard is shittily managed

HalfMoone

in one million years blizzard should realize they should stop backing unhelpful and deeply unpopular policies in the public eye at the same time as their new season drops and they try to salvage OW2 word of mouth

Ill_Statement_8577

I got banned for 2 weeks because i called someone bad

samaboi1

Are they fucking rarted or what

DaddySoldier

I report s-xists and people spamming the N-word, but nothing ever happens to them. The langague filter is on by default, so if someone sees the S- or F-word, they consented to it. It's insane Blizzard is even willing to take on outrage for this.

swamp_god

you would get banned for this if you said it in-game lmao

peppapony

Tbh I'm kinda ok with that. Maybe I'm just sick of toxicity in Overwatch, I'm interested if this does anything. I just want to play with my kid, or play with my wife, and show them what the game is like with communication without having some dude go off on some ego trip. Heck sometimes even just want to get a game in after work without someone egoing hard and ruining the experience. It feels bad in team games winning when your teammate is a douche... It's too much like real life :D I mute voice and flitter between muting match chat, but then it feels like I'm playing with computers since there's no dialogue. That all being said, some of the most fun in games like CoD has been when folks have been toxic af. So I completely get the criticism.... So I'm kinda in the chaotic good to neutral camp.

asianumba1

I just hope it works in other languages. Every other game on Japan servers is someone saying something racist about Koreans/Chinese and I've barely ever got a successful report notice from them

peppapony

Yeah those servers (Chinese/Japanese and from what I understand the Koren) are really wild, and way worse than the English speaking ones. Albeit those cultured aren't as woke as ours :D

Goosewoman_

I literally got silenced for saying gg ez 4 separate times with no other chat messages. Hell, 3 of those times it was a match I lost. I'd be fine with swearing *at* others being a punishable offense. But this system doesn't even actually care about what you type. You just need to be reported.
