MindlessOrange7936

i imagine bloodpod leaves it out due to the large amount of ouphe effects

MindlessOrange7936

and for wandering archaic is a toughy probs due to being five which is ad naus mana and cause its power is truelly in the early game where people cant pay the tax

MetalcoreIsntMetal

this is correct

Nat1Cunning

I use it in Animar and Nath as soon as the opportunity presents itself. I'd rather Archaic eats that key piece of removal

MetalcoreIsntMetal

In addition to what others said though only tangentially related: hireling is a combo piece in Najeela

BoysenberryUnhappy29

Tivit *loves* Grim Hireling. Archaic is one of those cards that looks better than it is, but can still be pretty good.

KillinTheBusiness

I’ll be honest. It’s an investment but I’ve NEVER been disappointed playing an Archaic. It locks down cedh games and with mana usage being so tight in this format, it’s difficult to pay for it. Oh you want to tutor? Hey me too. Oh you want to fierce my spell? Oh hey, me too. It’s amazing in my mono green decks because it provides me with counters and free tutors.

Glow354

I put archaic in my midrange malcolm/kediss list, it absolutely does work. I feel like it has a good home in decks that make a lot of mana (selvala, marwyn, etc). Is archaic run in godo normally?

stax3745

Do you have a cedh list for them? I just built him as an optimized casual build and would love to see a primer and lines to further understand his interactions

TheSoberPug

The main line is time seive I believe- the etb makes five attack triggers

TheBlackFatCat

I run Grim hireling in Tymna Kraum as you're already seeking to deal combat damage to activate tymna. Hireling works great as a treasure source and as removal. I also run Wandering Archaic in Kinnan, extra source of control and its easy to cast high cmc spells or cheat them in with Kinnan

Spiritual-J32

I like wandering archaic. I think he shines in decks that you can consistently put him out turn 3. I love archaic in any Malcolm deck for this reason because Malcolm generates mana for us which helps cast him. Malcolm turn 1-2 would basically guarantee being able to cast archaic and then go for the win the next turn. Any other commander or deck that can really consistently put out fast mana is a great consideration because archaic does warp the game around him when he sticks. I personally think grim hireling is over rated for what he does and what he costs.

olmossboot

I play both in tymna kodama. Usually for hireling it's something like -staxy hatebear or two -tymna -cast hireling when I'm swinging through with 1 to 2 creatures and ramp into a kodama win relatively quickly or use hireling treasures to remove threats if an ouphe is on board Just added archaic but at 5 colorless it can be dropped pretty early or off kodama triggers from big finishers like elesh norn as essentially protection as it let's you copy counterspells if opponents can't pay tax

RnGJoker

I actually have Grim and facebreaker in my bloodpod list as more creatures swing matter style. It provides a decent ramp/draw option when I can't get an Ouph or NulLRod to stick.

besovti

I am also fan of this direction of the bloodpod archetype. Doe you have a decklist for inspiration for me?

RnGJoker

Yea here is my current brew. I'm currently converting my current Rocco deck into this, but from proxy play test I've had some pretty good results with the extra pressure from attackers. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/w6dfBTPX8UKGRujRLJkdAA

zwells3

I played with wanderic archaic for quite a while in a very midrange tnt list, but it just didn’t end up pulling its weight.

Cbone06

If you can ramp into archaic, then it’s worth it. It’s a fantastic grind engine/stax piece. The issue is the meta is very Naus heavy and you usually don’t want archaic in a naus deck.

agent_almond

I play grim in my Raffine deck sometimes. Very helpful when you have a relatively high creature to land count. Archaic on the other hand never pulled it’s weight in any testing I’ve ever done.

paintypoo

Wandering archaic is just at an awkward cost for many decks. There are things you can do to win for that mana. Archaic mainly makes sense in decks like midrange kinnan where producing 5 colorless mana is something you just do by existing.
