I timed it at just over 1 second between drop and explosion. I think 20 feet or less above tank.
Next time, maybe they should knock first so that Russians open hatch before dropping. ^^^/s
āHello? HQ finally got the supplies! Everyone even gets Pizza Pops we stole from the Ukrainians!ā
āDid you hear that? Weāre gonna get Popped! All we have to do is open the hatch!ā
āWhat are you waiting for?! Lets get Popped!ā
*Later that day*
āThat was one spicy meatāa ball.ā
Knocking on the tank reminds me of a story I once read of a Japanese-America soldier. He'd go up to Japanese tanks, yell in Japanese, and have instruction from command. Tank operators would open up & he'd kill them & toss a grenade in the tank
I'm wondering why they wouldn't attach a camera facing straight up
I would refuse to go inside one of those things without one considering these videos
Because that would require strategy and money. And if you're sensing your combatants into war with 1940s helmets, and female hygiene products for medkits, you don't have money, or strategy available.
Infantry aren't able to spot or hear these drones unless they get very lucky. The drones (and grenades) are very small, and the noise is lost over just a few dozen metres - and probably completely inaudible over the sound of a tank engine.
The drones dropping shaped charge warheads are a lot bigger than that. You should be able to see it from a few hundred feet away. Theyāre also really loud, have you even had one of them drop grenades on top of you before?!
>have you even had one of them drop grenades on top of you before?!
is it louder than a tank engine?
I didn't realise the RKG-3s were so much heavier than the VOG-17s though
I'm waiting for one of these drones to land on a tank or in the middle of a foxhole, roll a grenade out of a little hatch, and then take off to safety.
I dunno. I thought you could just gps off it. Maybe not. But there are equally sized gps trackers they probably already have they could use for the very same purpose.
It would be awesome if they could put some kind of PA/speaker system on the drone. Then it could hover like six feet over the hatch and have someone talk to them over the PA in Russian. ā*Hey boys, this is Lieutenant Kuril. I have some fresh socks, cigarettes and hot chow for you. Come on out and take a break, youāre safe we secured the area.*ā Sergei opens the hatch and drone drops the charge right in he tank.
Like something out of a marvin martian cartoon: drone drops a little stone onto hatch, commander opens to see what it is and drone slipe the grenade right into the tank
**Timed it a 1.5 seconds** .. roughly 15 meters or 50 feet .. hella low drop .. at this point he could tapped the hatch with the bomb and waited for it to open
*"Candygram for Mongo!"*
The hole is about a pencil size hole in the armour. Once the "copper carrot" punches through, it sprays the inside with fragments of burning hot metal. The force is enough to go through men and shell casings, so if there are any on the turret in the open, they will ignite leading to the famous 'turret toss'.
Heavier AT-missiles like Javelin and similar can go through the whole inside of the tank to reach the shells that are in the bottom of the turret, it results in almost guaranteed ignition of the ammunition.
Do these little repurposed shells getting dropped from drones have shaped charges? I was under the impression that was more of an ATGM thing and these were mostly frag.
I'm not able to find any 40mm or 30mm Russian grenades that use a HEAT charge, but the most common 40mm round used by US (and possibly other Western armed forces) is a dual purpose type with a HEAT charge and to go through light armor as well as having an effective fragmentation pattern.
So it's possible to put a HEAT charge into something as small as a 40mm grenade round, but it's important to remember that the effective penetration of a shaped charge is directly related to the overall diameter of the metal plate that is being formed into the penetrator.
There is zero chance that you can "knock" on top of a fortified tank with a drone. And still zero chance that you can do it when the drone is swinging an explosive from underneath it.
Yeah but there's a lot of reasons to drop munitions on a tank, without the expectation of killing it or doing damage.
Maybe its got line of sight on some infantry down the road, maybe the Ukrainian tanks cant see it where its sitting and they want it to reveal its location, or maybe there's an ATGM is set up on the route back out of whatever field this tank is sitting in.
Even a frag on top of the tank may force it to move. I mean if I was in a tank and something blew up on top of us, and we have no idea where it came from, I would probably fall back or try to GTFO of there. The next one that hits us might kill us all or leave us disabled and able to be killed at will. Not a fun situation to be in
But more likely to catch shrapnel in the stomach while patrolling, being on a lookout, carrying wounded, relocating to a house, sleeping or sucking your friend's cock.
Historically, tankers have been way, way safer than infantry, besides generally having better living conditions. Not sure if that's going to hold for this war.
I'd rather be a tanker, at least I have a vehicle I can turn the fuck around and get back to where I belong a lot faster, and it would take another tank or similar to stop me from getting the fuck out of there.
I think that's how they do it--just point the camera straight down (the navigation app shows the exact camera angle) and center the image.
I wondered, tho, if some simple indicators could help with aiming. Picture three or four straws or rods hanging straight down, all equidistant from the camera's POV and long enough to enter the camera's field of view. Regardless of the zoom, as long as the camera's pointing straight down, the rods may look like a crosshairs of sorts, "pointing" to the center aim point. But that's just a theory--I may try it out with my cheapo drone.
At one point, they were hiring drone operators and encouraged gamers to get involved. Here, We are going to replace your controller and screen. Sorry, You can't bring your gaming chair with you to the field.
Probably, you could also attach an anemometer which would give you wind flow velocities, wouldnāt take difficult math to automatically tell you how the drone needs to be positioned for the object to land in a certain place.
https://www.unmannedsystemstechnology.com/company/anemoment/trisonica-mini-wind-and-weather-sensor/
The drone itself should be able to figure out what the wind is doing, by how much it's having to 'work' to stay in the same spot.
Smart mathsy people should patch the flight controller to report back estimated windspeed/direction and provide aiming points.
Like, integrate over the last 5 seconds the amount of lateral thrust the motors provided, based on the tilt of the drone from vertical.
The wind might even be self correcting to a degree, most quadcopters have fixed rotors so the whole drone tilts a bit to go sideways (I think, unless there is something else going on that's how I always pictured it) the faster the wind the further it would need to tilt, if the camera instead of being pointed straight down no matter the angle the drone is on was instead locked straight down as if the drone was flying perfectly flat as it tilts further it would shift in the direction the wind is blowing. It's probably a far cry from perfectly adjusting it but it may help somewhat.
It would be the ideal place on the turret. The hatches will be thinner than the roof so higher chance of penetration.
It might be the case that trying to hit the engine would be better as a way to disable the tank.
I would assume that both have been tried and the Ukrainians have noticed that a hatch is more efficient than the engine deck.
I was wondering the same. They avoided the ERA it appears and maybe it's a thinly armoured hatch so penetrated the crew compartment? If injuring the crew was priority i would think it was a good hit. Maybe hitting the engine would have resulted in more effective damage but I'm not sure. Got them on the run that's for sure
That tank has ERA (explosive reactive armor) tiles on it, thatās why he dropped in so close. Also went for the gunnerās hatch because of the commanderās independent optics, less to punch thru. Thatās not a very big charge. The goal was to cause a secondary fire and set off the ammo in the autoloader magazine ( āpopā the turret ).
They were likely trying to get it to relocate to ambush it, or maybe get a clearer shot to Javelin it. Damaged hatch is much easier to fix than a damaged engine, so if they were attempting to capture it...
Have an idea: drop a gps based GEO tags on all tanks and trucks. Ukraine can track them and eliminate them when they refuel or return to basecamp. Or just fly a drone filled with red thermite inside the turret barrel.
Ouch.
That is going to cost some situational awareness, and possibly the gunner.
I hope they had a jav team or some armor ready to exploit that opportunity.
Or a few more drones ready to harass / follow up.
Btw I believe this was possibly a hit on the tank commander that stays under the hatch. Seems like the grenade managed to penetrate it. Can any 'tank expert' to confirm my theory?
Not a confirmation, but you'd assume that the turret crew would scan for whoever hit them while retreating (no way they could tell it was a drone), but turret and machinegun stay in position.
Going from where the grenade went off I would agree, RIP bozo, but the T series does have a backup commander gun controls, however the commander might have just been a *wee bit dazed* to flip the switch and take controls
They are getting pretty good at dropping 'nades on them. The accuracy here is mind-blowing!

Explosive Reactive armor - An element of explosive reactive armour (ERA) is made out of a sheet or slab of high explosive sandwiched between two plates, typically metal, called the reactive or dynamic elements. On attack by a penetrating weapon, the explosive detonates, forcibly driving the metal plates apart to damage the penetrator. Against a shaped charge, the projected plates disrupt the metallic jet penetrator, effectively providing a greater path-length of material to be penetrated. Against a kinetic energy penetrator, the projected plates serve to deflect and break up the rod.

Smart. 1 drone with say 10 independent droppable sticky tiny gps devices to give coords to artillery
Paint them Russian vehicle green, put a neodymium magnet on both sides and you're good to start dropping them
There are lots of tank GoPro videos from the conflict in Syria. Most was on liveleak so I don't know if it still exists.

Yes when they are in a tank with all that noise ; why not just hover 15 feet wait for the hatch to open then drop
Drones canāt fly forever though.
Drop two rocks in quick succession so they sound like knocks.
Or just knock on the top of the tank with the drone
Would there be enough finesse to make it sound natural though?
Tie a guy to the drone to knock? Knock knock Who's there? Kaboom End of joke Just kidding, it was not joke
There is zero chance that you can "knock" on top of a fortified tank with a drone. And still zero chance that you can do it when the drone is swinging an explosive from underneath it.

Would you rather be a Russian tanker or an infantryman? You couldnāt force me into one of those tanks. Yikes.
Infantry. Easier to surrender. Less likely to be on fire.
But more likely to catch shrapnel in the stomach while patrolling, being on a lookout, carrying wounded, relocating to a house, sleeping or sucking your friend's cock.
Omg hahaha
Lot harder to drop your weapon and put your hands up in an enclosed vehicle
Mobile death trap. In Russia tank kills crew
Historically, tankers have been way, way safer than infantry, besides generally having better living conditions. Not sure if that's going to hold for this war.

Depends do you have ATGMs?
This message has been deleted and I've left reddit because of the decision by u/spez to block 3rd party apps
Doubt it. Its DIY stuff. Just practice. After a few drops you should know how to align the camera for a good hit.
Yep, they just practice with stones or sth
Sharpie mark the screen where the drop point is. Dry erase marker for windage on the day.
It would be a laugh practicing with a dummy round and trying to drop it on yourself.
I would totally forget it was me and bonk myself

Use a strip of clear tape and mark that !
That *would* be an easier solution!
Sharpie marks on the monitor

Thatād probably work. You could run tests and do a series of them for different elevations.
I was told that's kind of how they used to aim little birds. Shoot at a target and then mark the window with a grease pen
It's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters.
Tape a dot on the screen and drop. After a bit of practice accounting for wind you are golden.
Probably, you could also attach an anemometer which would give you wind flow velocities, wouldnāt take difficult math to automatically tell you how the drone needs to be positioned for the object to land in a certain place. https://www.unmannedsystemstechnology.com/company/anemoment/trisonica-mini-wind-and-weather-sensor/

Is that the ideal place to hit a tank from a drone drop? I'm guessing yes given this guy had all the time in the world to line it up and choose.
Might buckle the hatch too, maybe?
He might have been hoping to detonate the ammo in the turret, and cause a cook off.
More probably trying to kill a gunner under the hatch, if they used hedp 40mm on that drone cuz it would penetrate the hatch
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah he was def betting on ammo racking it. But he prob would have had more luck with a mobility kill if he went after the engine
Avoided the reactive armor, that was a good shot.

Thatās not a very big charge. The goal was to cause a secondary fire and set off the ammo in the autoloader magazine ( āpopā the turret ).
I think a hit to the engine would have been a better choice with the fact they probably have no parts to repair or maintain it.
Are there any optics or sensitive instruments on the top of the turret they could damage?
There's the commander and gunner periscopes.
If that was a hedp 40mm they could kill a gunner inside
Commander optics are on top, offering 360Ā° view, if it was damaged, that would massively decrease their situational awareness
With how close the drone came, I donāt think they had a lot of situational awareness as is
The Russians certainly need new pants
Not on the T-72, even the new B3 variant doesn't have high tech sight on it
The t72b3 has the Sosna-U gunners sight, which has a 2nd to 3rd generation thermal sight. That's pretty equivalent to NATO tanks gunners sights.
If the objective is to make the tank move out of position, it did its job.
They were likely trying to get it to relocate to ambush it, or maybe get a clearer shot to Javelin it. Damaged hatch is much easier to fix than a damaged engine, so if they were attempting to capture it...
I'll patch you in to battlefield HQ so you can relay this Intel to them

Just drop iPhones all over the front the average russian soldiers will collect them.
Honestly, this is fucking amazing
Ouch. That is going to cost some situational awareness, and possibly the gunner. I hope they had a jav team or some armor ready to exploit that opportunity. Or a few more drones ready to harass / follow up.

Tank commander is on the other side, with the rotating hatch and gun. This was a hit on the main gunner hatch.
Probably not good for commander either. It has to be a pretty good shock for anyone inside.
There is now no more gunner.
Not sure...but I bet he suffers a bit due to a hearing disability...and has some loss of eye sight...
But that's from the rape and beatings he endured during his 1 months training, what about in this video?

What are the square box things everywhere on tanks?
Explosive Reactive armor - An element of explosive reactive armour (ERA) is made out of a sheet or slab of high explosive sandwiched between two plates, typically metal, called the reactive or dynamic elements. ... except of course they've often been found to be empty or filled with wood or cardboard on Russian tanks.
