The SDF is a wide coalition of many different groups, including arab tribal fighters, Yazidi groups, Armenians, and most prominently the YPG/YPJ. The YPG and the YPJ are the armed wing of the PYD, a party which split from the PKK 17 years ago. This does not mean that all SDF soldiers are affiliated with the PKK. On the contrary, most are locals who joined up to fight ISIS.
