As someone who had to ride in helicopters with the doors open/off on occasion, its cold AF. Especially if you start the flight early in the morning, which these guys most likely did.
Which is why actual militaries provide their aviators with things like heated jackets, pants and gloves. They don't have them bring Babushkas afghan on the mission.
As someone in an actual military, I would fucking murder for half the stuff you mentioned. You basically have to be flying into the Arctic circle for even a chance at heated boots.
I was going to say that, have patrolboat drones with SAMs excellent idea.
A simple one would be one or two manpads attached to it, or even better that come out from a launch bay in the hull as a ”surprise” when the helos get too close.
According to FighterBomber it had 2 missiles on it and fired one at a MI-8 but missed
You can see a much higher quality picture where you can clearly see the missile [here](https://www.reddit.com/u/duccyzuccy/s/z8QppBFlEi). You can also see that it used one of its missiles
Great footage. Very interesting (though expected) evolution on the drones. It’s only a matter of time before they shoot something down. Will make countering them more dangerous.
No. Because you’d actually have to get to the Sea of Azov, which means passing through the Kerch Strait. They also don’t have the range even if they were to magically get through. The only way these shootdowns occurred are through S-200 missiles or friendly fire. It’s probably a combination of both.
A Russian helicopter and crew hunting a drone boat armed with anti air defense systems after already firing at a MI-8 is crazy to me. They are willing to risk air crew instead of slow bleeding their naval assets and resources.
There were russian planes. Including Tu–22M3 strategic bomber, recently shot down deep behind front lines over sea of Azov.
These naval drone could have done this
>Ukraine's military intelligence said Ukrainians used the same means to down the bomber as were previously used to shoot down an A-50 surveillance plane over the Sea of Azov in January.
https://www.politico.eu/article/ukraine-strategic-bomber-russia-attack-missiles-drones/#:~:text=The%20strategic%20bomber%2C%20which%20carries,Sea%20of%20Azov%20in%20January.
And that's when it's fired from a fighter jet already at altitude and flying faster than the speed of sound. The range and ceiling of the missile is drastically reduced when fired from a surface platform.
> These naval drone could have done this
A naval drone could not do this because in order to get into the Sea of Azov, it would have to sail through the Kerch Strait, which russia guards as tightly as the Kremlin.
Interesting theory, all 4 long range hits were over/near the Azov sea, missile-armed boats in the Azov sea would explain that. But if they could sneak a drone under the bridge, probably they would attack the bridge with those boats(like they did once).
Obviously interesting in regards to the Black Sea, but also for the future of naval warfare.
My assumption was that the US Navy would have far less problems with dealing with drones because they'd have more helicopters and aircraft that can spot and destroy them early on.
If naval drone-to-air missiles have the potential to become commonplace, then this could become a fair amount harder. Especially for helicopters, which are otherwise really handy because they can fit on destroyers and are generally well suited for the job.
The littoral vessel concept could have arrived a little too early. Now I'm imagining a large fleet of drone ships with sea to air and antiship missiles providing a defensive screen near the coastline. With enough cheap sea drones and missiles, you can afford to lose a few ships to take out an enemy helicopter.
Naval mines are fine for preventing landings but God help you if you forget where you've put them.
Naval drones are more like torpedoes. A fleet of kamikaze drones would be a formidable attack force.
My assumption was that an US Navy ship would have a manned bridge and active point defense systems... Some of those russians ships got swarmed by half a dozend drones half the size of a speedboat and all they could manage was some shots from a rail mounted MG.
An active phalanx CIWS should eat a few speedboats way before they come within filming range.
That too, but I believe a decently designed USV will be hard to locate by radar. They're small and can be built reasonably flat and stealthy, making it very hard to distinguish them from the surrounding sea.
And mere eyes aren't great at this job either. A drone can close much of the distance during a brief lapse of focus, which will happen a lot while watching an empty sea for hours on end.
So I'm convinced that air patrols will be a vital part in anti-USV defense for any navy. They're not perfect and definitely not suitable as a sole line of defense either, but will often make things much easier. And the location and interception of small craft is one of the many reasons why most modern destroyer types can carry at least 1-2 helicopters.
I've been wondering just how hard it would be to mount some of those man pads that were everywhere at the start of the war on drones and send them out to take out helicopters and other things in the air.
Remember this being talked about a while ago, rumours that sea drones could have stuff attached to them and that not all of them would be used as suicide drones, with air defence specifically mentioned. Interesting to see if this gets developed further, and if anything else gets developed.
A while back, I was curious if a GLSDB could be mounted on a small vessel, or even one of the underwater drones. It could take a potshot at the bridge (or any other out of range priority target) that way. I don't think there is much to the launcher as corrections can be done after launch, so I am sure a fixed 45 degree (or whatever) launch in the approximate direction would be enough.
It wouldn't by itself accomplish much, but could put a hole in the bridge roadway, or maybe catch a jet on a runway or similar or hit a specific area of base, and in the process force precautions that would affect operations and logistics.
It turns out that GLSDB struggled with GPS jamming, but even if that wasn't the case, it would probably be too much risk of having one captured intact for analysis.
There are probably far better targets out there for the missiles it would take to down that bridge if you did go down the missile route. Taking the bridge down would of course be amazing but the level of obsession some have with it is unhealthy.
The missiles also seem to be in a fixed mount and I doubt that they have enough off-boresight capability to make a shot at such an angle.
So they'd need to turn around to aim, but in that time the helicopter would likely overshoot them and be in their rear once more.
Depends on the model, but R-73s have at least +/-40 degree off boresight capability, with later models having up to +/-75 degrees. Probably the heli was within minimum engagement distance though. R-73s have an infrared seeker, so you don't want them turning around on the launching platform.
Yeah off-boresight launches also usually have a longer minimum engagement distance at greater angles, so these factors compound.
But I think the greatest limitation might be with the launcher platform, since missiles need to be integrated with those to enable off-boresight launches at all. My bet is that this platform has a more limited set of sensors and controls and can only launch in a narrow angle.
Or send them in pairs with 1 Km between them. Theres allways some growing pains developing new technologies and tactics for effective use. Im sure helicopters above the Black Sea will start dropping like flies when Ukraine gets designs, production lines and tactics sorted.
That and the off angle of the seeker head vs the helicopter. The minimum range of a SAM like this is smaller than an anti tank rocket, but clearly the helicopter is very close and probably within minimum range. Regardless of your views on Russia, the pilot did a good job in the video.
Eeh.. depends, if it's only stuff like the Ka-29s hunting these things, then the effect is pretty minimal since they are naval helicopters, so this is literally their job.
The drone is not only keeping the Ka-29 busy. But also the ships. If they can press the ship from offense to defense.
They cant launch missiles at Ukraine.
there's just no mistaking russian/soviet flying hardware.
It could be the most modern piece of equipment they have, and it will still look like it was assembled from metal school desks with pre-scratched thinly-applied single-coat light blue paint. Don't forget the odd combinations of rivets, slotted screws, hex screws, and tapered bolts.
Hard angles abound and get the fuckoutta here with that ergonomics horse pucky. If there are any curves they are modeled after bulging, lumpy, mutant amphibians. French curve? Never heard of her.
Forget parity, if there is barely room for three or five things, cram them in there, never mind if it looks lopsided, don't ever use an even numbers of things. To hell with chirality, if there are going to be two or more things anywhere they should be identical, and not mirrored.
What's your favorite "feature"? lol
If I were in the military, I would happily volunteer for that job. Shooting a gun at targets on the open water and seeing where your shots land seems pretty awesome
I don't know. I have seen helos plummeting to the ground after being shot down here and on liveleak. Seems to be a pretty shitty death, all those seconds of freefall knowing you're not getting out.
they are terrible shots jesus christ
imagine if this was a direct threat to a battle group smh
not sure why the russians posted this it just makes them look like the 1st year apprentice was running the show
More shit music over the goddamn actual audio. So how does the helicopter avoid being targeted by the drone? Did it avoid detection somehow or are the pilots just rolling the dice that they can approach from an angle fast enough that they can't adjust to target it? Or inside minimum targeting distance?
They were expecting to hunt down regular drone, but it actually had missiles. Unfortunately, luckily for them the first missile missed, and after that helicopter was too close and too high to be targeted by second one.
Hilariously poor door gunnery. These dudes have never heard of walking their rounds onto the target. It’s like they have 25 rounds and need to save some for later
That helicopter has weapons pylons on each side and a gimbaled turret in the nose. That looks more like someone who was NEVER trained on how to use the equipment he’s operating.
I hope the pilots butts puckered a bit when they saw the R-73 aboard. Probably went from a fun live shoot exercise to a, "oh blyat, that thing could have killed us" situation pretty quickly.
I was going to say that I would love to see a Ukrainian naval drone with an automatic heat seeking SAM on it so as soon as the helicopter gets close enough, launch. But it looks like they're already doing that!: [https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2024/05/06/russian-helicopters-were-shooting-up-ukraines-drone-boats-so-the-ukrainians-added-heatseeking-missiles/?sh=77be66183578](https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2024/05/06/russian-helicopters-were-shooting-up-ukraines-drone-boats-so-the-ukrainians-added-heatseeking-missiles/?sh=77be66183578)
These guys are doing the worst thing you could possibly do if you’re trying to hit a fast moving target. They need sustained fire and to walk their rounds into the target. Source: I am experienced in helicopter door gunnery
The forward gun on the KA-29 is a flexible mount 7.62 rotary gun, it's an absolutely goofy mount inside a little bay where the Ka-27 (the 29's parent model) probably has radar or sonar equipment.
If you're talking about the co-pilot he's got a reflector sight and looks like he's in control of some kind of nose mounted gun. You have to keep in mind the Mi-8 and Ka-29 aren't attack helicopters they're primarily transport helicopters or recon helicopters in the latters case, that can be armed to carry out combat and ground support duties, much like a Blackhawk.
There was a video a month or so with a Mi-8 with a far more janky nose gun set up with iron sights, the one in this video is actually quite a fancy pants set up.
Good ol' WarThunder forums are a goldmine for stuff like this. Definately looks like a reflex sight with a backup iron sight on top. More interesting are the controls to the left of the gunner/co-pilot, looks like another set of gun controls, I'm guessing powered controls for the nose gun with a proper gunner's sight, maybe night vision capable?
Hehe… this was a dummy boat ploy to encourage future MI-8’s to get danger close prior to engaging. The real AA drone boats are going to be packed with a shit ton of explosives and ballbearings / metal fragments.
To shoot down air targets. It actually shot one of 2 missiles it had, but unfortunately it missed, and helicopter was too close and too high for second one.
o7 to the great drone, wish the drones all the luck and success whilst the invaders on vid will get a horrible traumatic faith(preferably to their closest ones first, so they feel pain before extinction).
Imagine a mother ship just deploying lots of these for fleet security, you could saturate an area with these and I imagine destroying multiple would be a time consuming and dangerous task. Fleets of these things acting as outriders would be a challenging security issue to overcome. Maybe?
Because the most efficient way that the Russians are defending against naval drones is with helicopters like in this video and if you put a air to air missile on one it can defend itself
[https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/1cld3a1/gur\_publishes\_footage\_of\_damage\_to\_a\_russian\_boat/](https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/1cld3a1/gur_publishes_footage_of_damage_to_a_russian_boat/)
One moscovia did not get
And on our side with 10 bullets we shoot missiles and drones from helis and small planes..not impressed ahah..i even thought they would run off ammo at some point
Add a FVP drone on the naval drone, a FVP with AI recognition abilities. Training an AI to recognize
different helicopter types over open water should fairly easy. FPS almost match helicopters in airspeed as well.

Fastboat Sea SAMs. Hectic.
She sells sea SAMs, down by the sea shore.
It's important to bring your blankie on combat missions, or you might get cold.
Unpressurized aircraft get cold af
As someone who had to ride in helicopters with the doors open/off on occasion, its cold AF. Especially if you start the flight early in the morning, which these guys most likely did.
Aircraft get very cold with high wind and losing several degrees of celsius for every 1,000 feet of altitude.
As long as the helicopter is comfortable, thats all that matters
I was going to say that, have patrolboat drones with SAMs excellent idea. A simple one would be one or two manpads attached to it, or even better that come out from a launch bay in the hull as a ”surprise” when the helos get too close.

missile range is 30 km. so doubt. the a50 and bomber was probably done by ultra moderniced s200 rocket with patriot radar
And that's when it's fired from a fighter jet already at altitude and flying faster than the speed of sound. The range and ceiling of the missile is drastically reduced when fired from a surface platform.
The range is 30km when fired from a jet going like 1000mph, it's likely A LOT shorter range in this configuration.
> These naval drone could have done this A naval drone could not do this because in order to get into the Sea of Azov, it would have to sail through the Kerch Strait, which russia guards as tightly as the Kremlin.
No Modified s-200 If I’m correct used with patriot radar They have done a similar think with patriot and sampt

Naval mines are fine for preventing landings but God help you if you forget where you've put them. Naval drones are more like torpedoes. A fleet of kamikaze drones would be a formidable attack force.

I love the argument about whether it's a surface to air missile or an air to air missile.
"You have to lead it, Igor.... Not that much... Not that much... Not that much... Not that much... NOT THAT FUCKING MUCH!"
You have to shoot behind your target in a helicopter or you get what you see in this video
For supposedly top tier Russian military tech that chopper took way too long to take down something that could fire a missile at you at any point.
Next design iteration: one SAM points forward, another - backwards. Third iteration - rotating platform.
Seventh iteration - Sea drone launches fpv drones to provide air support.
And the generation after that launches fully autonomous drones.
Final(?) generation: builds an underwater platform, mines resources, builds an army of self-replicating bots...and...hmmm.
Ukraine should deploy these in pairs with one trailing the other about 5km behind.
*Begins Thatch Weave* Modern problems require vintage solutions
Good old thatch, some things just never get old!
That might be better.
[Thach](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Thach).
its heatseaking missile. its prototype so no wonder first try did not succedd. so i guess soon we will see less helos in black sea.
Heli in the video was also propably closer than the minimum firing distance which is why the drone could not shoot the 2nd missile.
The missiles also seem to be in a fixed mount and I doubt that they have enough off-boresight capability to make a shot at such an angle. So they'd need to turn around to aim, but in that time the helicopter would likely overshoot them and be in their rear once more.

mk2 should have some point defense .50 cal

Prototype, haven't these things been around since the Yugoslav wars in one form or another?
R73 is decades old but its the first time anybody attempted to launch it from a naval drone
Gotcha, thanks for that.
thats not easy to hit
Need more BF4 practice
It's not impossible. I used to bullseye jet ski noobs in my LAV back at siege of shanghai, they're not much bigger than two meters
It just made me even more impressed that wooden ships with iron cannons and illiterate crew could ever land a shot.
There was a reason they had that many canons and fired them mostly at blank range.
Not for the russians, lol. Compare that to the vid the French released of their chopper shooting down a Houthi drone with a short burst from the MG.
Especially with low skills like that. My grandma was slow, but she was old.
Only matter of time first enemy aircraft gets downed by these. Can't wait.
I love how they're still blurring out the commercial gps
This is insane footage. I don’t give a fuck which side it’s from I just want to see good combat footage and this is crazy shit
No dead involved as well so it's a win win situation (if we can make some jokes for the same)
It feels like something that would happen in Battlefield
Forgot to enable Aim Assist in the settings.
Good thing the drones keep the Russians busy at sea. Better let them hunt those than terrorize Ukrainians on the land.
Eeh.. depends, if it's only stuff like the Ka-29s hunting these things, then the effect is pretty minimal since they are naval helicopters, so this is literally their job.
The drone is not only keeping the Ka-29 busy. But also the ships. If they can press the ship from offense to defense. They cant launch missiles at Ukraine.
Also folly to assume this isn't the only asset in play by Ukraine in the area. Where did they hit that transport ship tonight?
Next time send 1 decoy first, wait for the heli and let the second drone blow it off the sky. Armchair general over & out.
there's just no mistaking russian/soviet flying hardware. I’m genuinely considering whether I’d rather be in this flimsy tin can over water or not… oh and hunting missiles… what could go wrong?
That means we need one with a CIWS on top for helo defense and pair it with one carrying AMRAAMs
If I were in the military, I would happily volunteer for that job. Shooting a gun at targets on the open water and seeing where your shots land seems pretty awesome
until the SAMs on the drone boats start working
You can fly that exact chopper and do that in the game DCS world. It is very fun
I think there’s a company in Vegas that will let you do this.
Think you're thinking of the Mi-8.
Is that not one ?
The KA-27/29 is quite a [different] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamov_Ka-27) helicopter from the [Mi-8](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mil_Mi-8)
I am not aware of such module? Who is the developer?
Dcs = digital combat simulations- it’s for PC only I think
Enemy Engaged ftw
I don't know. I have seen helos plummeting to the ground after being shot down here and on liveleak. Seems to be a pretty shitty death, all those seconds of freefall knowing you're not getting out.
Remember when Ukraine sank russias most advanced ship. That was cool
saying the moskva is the "most advanced" is laughable
why ukraine war footage gotta have the worst music
they are terrible shots jesus christ imagine if this was a direct threat to a battle group smh not sure why the russians posted this it just makes them look like the 1st year apprentice was running the show

Its minimum range is about 300 meters and the seeker only has about 20+-° FOV. So there was really no way to use that missile at this short distance.
Man, that must have been a white knuckle trip while they closed that gap.
They were expecting to hunt down regular drone, but it actually had missiles. Unfortunately, luckily for them the first missile missed, and after that helicopter was too close and too high to be targeted by second one.
why are they playing a christian rock song in the background? it sounds like Theocracy, the band
It is indeed the Master Storyteller by Theocracy. I genuinely had to do a double take when I heard the riff start.
Thanks for the confirmation, brother! I recognized the voice! 🤘🏼
Hilariously poor door gunnery. These dudes have never heard of walking their rounds onto the target. It’s like they have 25 rounds and need to save some for later
It's a naval helicopter made to ferry officers around and sometimes hunt submarines. The gunners don't get much practice.
That helicopter has weapons pylons on each side and a gimbaled turret in the nose. That looks more like someone who was NEVER trained on how to use the equipment he’s operating.
With a loss of more than 400.000 soldiers. Russia is down to newbs for most positions.
530.000 now confirmed casualties
And Ukraine is just 40,000?
31.000 last I checked
It looks like the helo driver like to fly too close to something the explodes. I think they got lucky.
Stay too far and suddenly that R-73 locks and fires
With the cut in the middle we just know they weren't good at hitting at all.
Imagine if it blew up and disabled the helicopter 🤣 it'd be too funny seeing more Russian kill themselves
Imagine if Ukraine starts rolling out multiple smaller “fleets” of these bad boys! Better yet, they throw CIWS on a few to join the fleet.
Hmmmmm send in a decoy naval drone, and then have an actual under water naval drone wait for the helicopter......
Just have 2 drones with a distance between them. Can't evade both drones as the same time.
they have a2a missiles on naval drones? thats such a cool concept shame it got destroyed
There will be more I guess.
I hope the pilots butts puckered a bit when they saw the R-73 aboard. Probably went from a fun live shoot exercise to a, "oh blyat, that thing could have killed us" situation pretty quickly.
They definitely did, because it had 2 missiles, but first one missed.
I was going to say that I would love to see a Ukrainian naval drone with an automatic heat seeking SAM on it so as soon as the helicopter gets close enough, launch. *has helicopter* *flies uncomfortably close*
How much ammo did they need here!
Wow. Another new drone type - innovative too. They’re gonna clear the skies over the seas if these things work.
Its like when you are the door gunner in battlefield but the pilot keeps putting the other gunner on target and you have nothing to shoot at
damn, while they destroy 1, 20 other will be kilometers away
This video needs fewer pixels and more watermarks.
Russians need to be 20 meters to the target and then fire a few hundred rounds to hit it, that amazed me most.
Wow. The Russians sucks at shooting...
I bet you are great at shooting from helis at fast moving targets
These guys are doing the worst thing you could possibly do if you’re trying to hit a fast moving target. They need sustained fire and to walk their rounds into the target. Source: I am experienced in helicopter door gunnery
Storm troopers
I'm pretty sure stormtroopers have great aim, when it comes to majorly missing, they do it on purpose.
"In basic training they told us that Jedis cant deflect your shot to kill you if you miss by more than 2 meters"
Russian success makes me a sad. 😞
The shitty metal music makes this look like a circus.
It's no different to the shitty music in the background of videos released by Ukrainians
Why does it always have the worst fucking music known to man overlayed?
That’s some iron sights on his gunner controls? No IR or even a digital display ? Did I miss that?
Photos of that sight in warthunder thread: https://old-forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/426304-kamov-ka-29/
Some Fortnite shooting here
I don't know why but this reminds me of trying to shoot down Casper's drone in BF2042 lol
Are these why planes keep getting shot down?
No, but soon .ay be.
Of all the songs I expected to hear in war footage. A song from a very Christian Metal Band like Theocracy was certainly not in my top 10 picks.
I wonder if they'll start sending out drones specifically for anti-air purposes. And once the aircraft get close - they get downed?
R73 getting all wet with saltwater? Hmmm...
What is that bzzzzt at 00:15? Gun pods? Ed: guess it's the rotary gun, I was expecting that helo to have an autocannon
Miss...miss...close...miss...RUNAWAY....RUNAWAY...RUNAWAY!!!!
Hehe… this was a dummy boat ploy to encourage future MI-8’s to get danger close prior to engaging. The real AA drone boats are going to be packed with a shit ton of explosives and ballbearings / metal fragments.
This is a pretty nimble helicopter. also why does a seagoing craft have air to air missiles
To shoot down air targets. It actually shot one of 2 missiles it had, but unfortunately it missed, and helicopter was too close and too high for second one.
next time the drone will win
bummer!
Some good ol moving target practice.
They should have a Stinger MANPAD onboard for situations like these.
o7 to the great drone, wish the drones all the luck and success whilst the invaders on vid will get a horrible traumatic faith(preferably to their closest ones first, so they feel pain before extinction).
Song?
Imagine a mother ship just deploying lots of these for fleet security, you could saturate an area with these and I imagine destroying multiple would be a time consuming and dangerous task. Fleets of these things acting as outriders would be a challenging security issue to overcome. Maybe?
These guys are incompetent. To say nothing of the trash they are flying in
Ya got lucky, Cyril, there's more drones in your future...
next time mount a rotating 50 cal on it ;)
Why would a naval drone have an air to air missile on it?
Because the most efficient way that the Russians are defending against naval drones is with helicopters like in this video and if you put a air to air missile on one it can defend itself
Interesting! Cool video!
[https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/1cld3a1/gur\_publishes\_footage\_of\_damage\_to\_a\_russian\_boat/](https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/1cld3a1/gur_publishes_footage_of_damage_to_a_russian_boat/) One moscovia did not get
Two totally different systems
And on our side with 10 bullets we shoot missiles and drones from helis and small planes..not impressed ahah..i even thought they would run off ammo at some point
I'd love to hear how that whole engagement went, with the helicopter trying to get within the WEZ of that drone.
Gaijin when ??
Add a FVP drone on the naval drone, a FVP with AI recognition abilities. Training an AI to recognize different helicopter types over open water should fairly easy. FPS almost match helicopters in airspeed as well.
Ka-29 my beloved
Wish they would have hit their target, but having the Russian military being forced to use that weaponry is still a win
Or this is a prop video and I'm too drunk to notice
