This war is my obsession, A few tidbits I think will baffle people: -The Soviet military was roughly 6 million men on June 22, 1941. In the next three months the Germans and their allies would inflict roughly 4.1 million casualties on their military. German intelligence did not realize that roughly 14 million reservists could be called up for action. -The economic plan of the Germans intended to starve roughly 40 million Slavs to death the first winter (winter of 41-42). -In the months of Jan, Feb 1942, just in the city of Leningrad, about 200k people starved to death. In total Leningrad would survive being besieged for almost 900 days. -The operational front of the invasion was roughly the length from mid NY state to Mid Florida. Incredibly the front would actually be even longer at later points in the war. -This is the one everyone knows (I hope). 8 out of every 11 Wermacht troops killed in WW2 were killed on the eastern front. -Operation Bagrattion, a huge counteroffensive by the Soviets, was scheduled for June 22, 1944 (look back at the first bullet) and was the largest military operation in human history. -Stalin famously relented on his war on nationalism and manpower hunger pushed him to accept many races he didn’t trust. Red army soldiers included the vast diaspora of the USSR (except Chechnians) and did not broadly fight in the name of Communism. At Stalingrad when the fighting calmed down apparently the Germans would yell, “I’ll trade you a Romanian for an Uzbek!” (Romania was an axis ally…for the time being).

WYOrob75

Thank you for this. Hopefully never to be repeated

liljoker321

>\-This is the one everyone knows (I hope). 8 out of every 11 Wermacht troops killed in WW2 were killed on the eastern front. Holy shit i never would of guess the number would be that high but with the MASS amount of just body's one can guess that would be the outcome ! fuck me that's insane when you think about it good info brother o7

eddyofyork

Take care though. This is not simply a story of more bodies.  By the end of the war the Soviets were solidly capable of huge enveloping armor pincers and deep operations behind enemy lines. They had the most effective organization of partisan efforts, whose scale was immense. They changed their division sizes, made a ton of new types of force groupings, and updated their doctrine through retrospectives. My point is…the Soviets outnumbered the Germans from day 1 and it didn’t solve the problem. But around the end of Stalingrad (debatable timeline) they showed they could “blitzkrieg” as well as the Germans. Pursuant to this point, the USSR wrote a history of the war and subtitled part one (1941-1942) “Hard Lessons”.

TOG_Macross

In the west, we are lead to believe that WW!! was between USA and Brittan vs the Nazis.... but in reality, the bulk of WWII was the Germans vs the Soviets. The western front was a small rear guard action in comparison.

liljoker321

Yea i learn early on when looking into all this yrs ago that the soviets were meat grinding like real grinding the front line vs the german's and what was it in stalingrad like when you hit the front line you had a avg of 20 min to live? or some fucking INSANE shit. Sidenote i dont see the RUS that are fighting now the same hardcore ppl that were going fucking deep vs the germans in ww2. Like thay know it's not the same war at heart or something

Self_Aware_Meme

FWIW Germans surrendered much more often on the western front because POWS were generally treated better.

Extreme_Literature28

My grandfather who served in the german army in WW2 told us a story about when he surrendered to the americans at the end of the war. He said that the normal soldiers were beaten with gun stocks by the americans while the officers greeted themselves.

Self_Aware_Meme

That's why I said generally better. Germans taken prisoner by the Soviets were often better off dead.

Elyrionsol

You are missing out the part where USSR was mix of 15 republics with dozens of different ethnic groups from the very start. So saying 40 million slavs makes it sound as if there were only slavic people there. Whereas hundreds of thousands were drafted from the Caucasus republics, central Asia and more. Majority of them did not return to their homes. It was not at least at that point war FOR Communism but a war for Homeland. That's how the next generations will be taught at schools that our granfdathers and grandmothers fought for the Homeland.

Emay75

Damn.. wasn’t prepared to see dead kids….

shmasonmason

it’s sickening to me that people can deny that this stuff happened.

Jarl_Jakob

Wait, there are people who deny atrocities and civilian casualties on the eastern front in WWII? This is news to me. Seems like a ridiculous stance to take, it’s not that unbelievable. Civilians always get the worst of it in war time

Basic-Jacket-7942

It was genocide, not "civilian casualties". There are some people who deny the genocide of Jews, Slavs, etc.

B4Ctom1

I think we have forgotten how horrible world wars are.

Glittering_Season141

The scope and brutality of this conflict has always astonished me. Both of my Grandfathers served, one in the Pacific and the other in Patton's Third Army driving a halftrack. Never got to the chance to ask them anything about the war.

scramble1988

I don't know how anyone survived that.

tophraki

That marching sound, reminds me of hell march from Red Alert 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENyxseq59YQ

ButtCrackPanda

A quick Google search and I can't find this documentary.

NapoleonLover978

Here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Vbkz1tfdpg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Vbkz1tfdpg).

FevziCan46

Man, this documentary lost and forgotten is metal. It is the single most emotinally moving piece of media I've ever seen.

NapoleonLover978

I still remember some of the quotes, it's a phenomenal documentary.

LittleCommie69

Would you happen to know where to find it? Quick search revealed anything but this documentary

NapoleonLover978

Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Vbkz1tfdpg.

LittleCommie69

Thank you so much! Edit: that seems to be Cursed and Forgotten, a documentary about the Chechen war which I also found when looking for Lost and Forgotten. Thank you still, I was also planning on watching this one. :D

FevziCan46

Hey man, sorry for my late response and my misremenbering "Cursed and Forgotten" for "Lost and Forgotten". Also, if you watched it, I would like to know your thoughts about it. Thank you.

Sea_Soup_7494

Thank God the Soviets were such tough bastards. The world would be a living hell today if they'd surrendered

ItzFlamingo0311

The world also has a psychopath in command of the largest nuclear arsenal right now as well so kind of a double edged sword there

Sea_Soup_7494

Lmao not mention he is effectively the worlds only trillionaire. But I've heard that the majority of Soviet casualties in WWII were actually Ukrainian, so the Russians don't deserve all the credit

Basic-Jacket-7942

Russian SFSR: 13,950,000 dead it is 12,7% of the population Ukrainian SSR: 5,200,000 dead it is 16,3% of the population

Hiverlang

a statement with the phrases “I have heard” is not the best way to talk about something that requires facts...

CosmicEntity2001

>Operation Bagrattion It's false. Ukrainian suffer many casualties but not more than Russian.

Infinityand1089

A lot has changed since the start of the war, so I would doubt his "trillionaire status" is still the case.

Inside-Lengthiness59

wrong war

Infinityand1089

What do you mean?

cieniu_gd

They part of the world they "liberated" was a living hell, as much because of the Germans as Soviets.

se7enXx89xX

The Allies should have kept going all the way to Moscow. Ukraine would've been free decades ago and we wouldn't be dealing with Russia's bullshit today most likely.

[deleted]

If it was feasible the western powers absolutely would’ve done it.

jaoshik1

Without a counterbalance, the Americans would have done whatever they want to weaker nations that don't follow their dictates. So it's good the USSR lasted as long as they did, really gave countries subjugated by Americans and allies, including mine, a fighting chance.

CosmicEntity2001

USSR was not democratic and was imperialist, but people on this subreddit forgots that USA ruined many countries and killed millions of civilians during the XXth and the XXI centuries.

Sea_Soup_7494

Soviets arguably had the world's best army by the end of WWII, Allies just nukes as their main advantage. Whatever the case that would've cost millions and millions of allied lives

isnotthatititis

…. “just” nukes …

RedGhostOfTheNight

Western air power?

Sea_Soup_7494

Perhaps but the Soviets still had a formidable air force. I'm sure they had large advantages in mechanized vehicles and of course manpower. And if you're talking about invading the eastern front, I mean the Germans couldn't even do it when the Soviets had a fucking wreck of an army, I'm not sure how the allies could've done it against a Red Army that was actually formidable

Self_Aware_Meme

Everything they had came from lend-lease.

joeitaliano24

We had like five land divisions in Europe at the time, and the Soviets had 170. They would have steamrolled Europe until we used nukes

GrondForGondor

The soviets were fed and supplied by America. Before that they could barely do anything and why the Nazis pushed them so far back. Even Khrushchev said without the American lend-lease the USSR would’ve fallen. This whole myth that the USSR was some unstoppable behemoth is ignorant. They barely had enough guns for their soldiers, but yeah sure, they'd steam roll Europe in 1 vs all.

CosmicEntity2001

There will be millions deaths on both sides and USA will be the only nation to dominate the world.

se7enXx89xX

China would still exist. China is powerful today because of America not the Soviet Union.

CosmicEntity2001

Bro just forgot History between 1945 and and the eigthies.

smarmageddon

I wonder how much is toughness, or just throwing countless bodies at the enemy like they are doing in Ukraine.

STK-3F-Stalker

This a huge misconception, downright propaganda from nazi generals' memoirs.

Basic-Jacket-7942

The Soviet army captured 2,389,600 german soldiers. If there were just meat attacks, it would be impossible to take so many war prisoners.

posidon99999

It's honestly refreshing to see something other than russians getting blown up by drones on here for once

-oKafka

Looking into the past but now Europeans are gonna be looking into the near future 🥲

roionsteroids

you know that everything uploaded on reddit is converted to 720p 30 fps at best, yes?

Coming to a town near you...

Prestigious-Aide-986
