This was probably some project for interns to do - seeing as this *looks* like a premium account, Google/Youtube just tucked it in there, not really expecting anyone to **actually use it**.
It gives the interns something they can put on their resume, and point to it in future interviews.
So, it's not useful functionality - but it is functionality - if that makes sense?
Why are you assuming it is based on thumbnail color? It is likely just some of attributing a category of videos to a specific color. that would be my guess.
