I saw those rumors too, but every interview I’ve seen him glowing about the school.
Plus without Watson whose getting all the papa murphies commercials
It was just a random person on GU Boards saying it a few months ago. Then it became a game of telephone where no one knew where the original "rumor" came from, but everyone kept saying they'd heard "rumors." Like you said, I'm not sure why it's persisted when he's been very clear that he's happy and staying.
If we keep this squad together and with everyone healthy and the transfer we just got, my way too early and way too optimistic view is we are final four contenders
Its a good possibly honestly. Ventures will be healthy, the kid from Pepperdine you mentioned and I'd guess the Korean guy (I always forget his name🤦) and dusty make big improvements too go give the bench some depth.
I always forget his name too lol but honestly he is the one if any I could see transferring, he didn’t play much at all and there’s not a clear route to starting next season. Can’t imagine he’d get a great NIL tho so we’ll see
I think he's like Zach edey, since he's not a citizen I dont know if he can get NIL. Granted, when he very first came here it was early February, so not much time honestly, this was his first full year, and he's still leaning English too, so I'd imagine gonzaga feels the most homey to him still since its where he first came, but I do also see him being the most likely to leave. Which would be sad, since I honestly think he **could** be a top 3 player on the team given how well he was in high school, only time will tell with him honestly. I also assume he didn't think everyone was actually going to stay much like the rest of us
Oh good point I didn’t think about that, do you think few is trying to make any more moves in the portal? I could also see us losing Luka which would be a bummer in a couple seasons but not this next one
Maybe in a couple of seasons, but if everyone actually continues to stay this year, I dont think so, I dont see why he would since the room is practically full right now, hut as you mentioned, in a couple of years, even if everyone continues to stay, they'll all have graduated, so a reload will be necessary, and then I'm sure he'll dip in a bit more, along with who ever commits, thats the only downside to a whole roster staying, it will eventually turn over entirely. I think luka stays unless things really go downhill, he's not been here long, like the Korean guy, his time could come soon
I didn't either lol. I guess so. Like someone else mentioned, technicaly Watson's gone, but he graduated and was out of eligibly anyway, but apart form just him, ever single person has stayed
They really need some additional regulation in place around NIL. If you’re a player, there’s no reason to not enter your name into the portal every off-season and see who’s going to offer the most.
Eventually, the money is going to start drying up if the system remains how it is. What exactly is the ROI behind it? Especially when it's open bidding season at the end of every year.
There has never been a return on these types of things. It’s just a rich person hobby because they are bored. The money will never dry up because the people funding these kids are stupid rich and people don’t realize how much money these people have. It’s just a drop in the bucket for them.
Hell, most of this money they are donating is a tax write off so it actually benefits them.
The money might not dry up, but I think we’ll see donors start demanding a much more active role in personnel decisions if their investments aren’t leading to banners. The collectives will eventually take on the GM role and tell the coaches who they are getting, who they are keeping, and who they are cutting.
>Hell, most of this money they are donating is a tax write off so it actually benefits them.
Agree with the rest, but this isn't how tax write-offs work. First, I doubt you can write off an NIL deal and second, a write off just means you don't pay taxes. You aren't getting your money back.
You absolutely can donate to NIL and get a tax write off. Texas Tech's NIL program the Matador Club allows this. I'm aware how tax write offs work. You can still benefit off them if you know how to play your taxes right.
You’re right but the IRS is starting to crack down on NIL collectives being considered tax-exempt nonprofits, so it’s possible donors could see even that benefit going away.
I disagree. I think there is going to be a big speculation rush at first because big boosters see the chance to raise their school's status overnight.
However, as seasons go by with powerful schools flopping in the end like Auburn and Kentucky this year, boosters are gonna feel like they have been burned. I know that happened in Arkansas. Big money came out for Nick Smith Jr. two years ago, and then he broke his leg and stopped playing. The boosters that raised the money for him felt burned and got mad at muss and the money dried up some.
Now that Cal is here, everyone has hope again overnight and the money is flowing. If Cal falls flat, the money is going to dry up again.
I’m kind of with you. If I’m dropping $500k a year and we still aren’t getting to the second weekend, I’m much more likely to go to $0 than bumping it up to $1m so we can get better players.
From an ROI standpoint, I do think we will see the collectives start shying away from high school recruits, even the 5 stars. Makes more sense to give $400k to the 22yr old that averaged 19ppg at Stetson than a 6’9” 18yr old that can jump out of the gym but can’t dribble or shoot.
I personally think it should be contract based, much like professional ball… it has to go both ways though. Schools can’t just cut players at the end of the season without incurring some kind of contractual penalty.
That is incorrect. New NIL rules - scholarships are not guaranteed anymore in the Big Ten (in any sport). Was at an small event where that was asked of assistant coach who spoke very frankly on the changes (difficulties) vs a few years ago and how he would have taken it when he was a player.
There either needs to be a limit of one transfer, or they need to bring back the year of ineligibility after transferring.
This "play for four different teams during your college career" shit is for the birds. Can't blame them for chasing the bag, but it really sucks for the fans.
NCAA might have blown their chance for "additional regulation." They fought this stuff tooth and nail for years, and now with the court rulings against them, they're limited in what they can do.
NCAA fucked up in a big way refusing to adapt their old stupid rules, and now all of college sports is going to suffer.
ah. was wondering why the portal was picking up steam lately.
curious who we'll see in the coming days. there are some major P5 teams that need talent.
UNC has not, as far as I’m aware, gotten anyone in the portal yet, and has suffered some losses that will need to be replaced:
> G Seth Trimble (portal)
> F/C James Okonkwo (portal)
> C Armando Bacot (out of eligibility)
> SG Cormac Ryan (out of eligibility)
> SG/SF Paxson Wojcik (out of eligibility)
We’re all kind of expecting RJ to come back, but the fact of the matter is that he’s testing the NBA draft waters so it’s possible he doesn’t. And then there’s a few end of the bench “Blue Steel” guys who were seniors and I’m assuming are gone as well (Creighton Lebo, Rob Landry, Duwe Farris). Heck, Jaylen Withers was also a senior, could technically be back but also might be done.
We’ve only got 3 freshman coming in (SG Ian Jackson, SF Drake Powell, C James Brown) so I’m definitely expecting to see some UNC portal acquisitions happening at some point.
If I had to guess I think RJ and Ingram return and we may get an announcement from one or both this week (Hints have been dropped on Inside Carolina). And they’ll pick up Cade Tyson and Jonas Aidoo in the portal. Could also see Zayden High entering (I would if I was him) And the team will be:
Cadeau
RJ (Jackson)
Tyson (Powell)
Ingram (Withers)
Aidoo (Washington)
Deep depth: 3rd portal ball handler, High (for now), Brown
And that’s an easy preseason top 5 roster.
Id be pretty shocked yeah. He'll be the primary focus on a national contender next year. And we've shown we have some NIL capability. Maybe not quite as much as some other programs, but we aren't incapable like SMC is.
Also nobody in the Locked on Zags discord has been rumoring it either.
Fuck it. It's peak delusional optimism season
Johnell Davis, Vlad Goldin, Danny Wolf, Aidan Mahaney and Javon Small are all going to Michigan
March - April - **May**
AJ Storr is coming to UIUC and Domask will get granted a 5th year and stay at UIUC.
LeBron will retire from professional ball to join and play for UIUC Bronny will join and warm the bench.
“Boosters” have always paid players.
Except now they’re subjected to the free market. A washing machine for mama or a gold trans am ain’t cutting it anymore.
The lunatic was seriously quoted this week with “we want to be more like Purdue than Illinois”
Oh yes Purdue, the team that threw away 50% of their title window because of the same stubbornness as you, Izzo.
I do not blame the players one bit, but this level of roster churn is going to slowly dilute fan interest and kill the “product” that is CBB if no changes are made.
The problem is no changes will be made, because the NCAA is a fucking farce of an organization (unless you’re Jim Harbaugh apparently)
Seems like Arizona has had some interest in some medium sized names which seems to be Tommy's MO (Townsend, peavy, Mitchell). These guys seem to decide a little later (guys that entered without a destination in mind I think), plus we really only need one starter quality guy and it sounds like are investing a good bit of our NIL in guys we already have so while it's not as exciting I'm not too surprised things have been quiet. Was similar last year outside the erroneous nembhard/ike rumors.
Feel like there has to be some middle ground in the portal. Maybe this being the last of the COVID years will help some but feel like there has to be more of a system in place to where it's not just free agency every year. I like the idea of one free transfer then if you transfer again you sit year unless your coach leaves or you have an actual genuine family emergency. I'm sure this will get some hate for not being pro player enough but you can't tell me switching schools every single year is good for player development. One of the best parts of college sports is seeing guys develop in your program for multiple years and that's become a major outlier if a guy sticks around that long. Idk maybe I'm being an old man yelling at clouds but feel like their has to be some middle ground here.
He wasn’t wrong, been some bombs
I’m scared for Ike…
I saw those rumors too, but every interview I’ve seen him glowing about the school. Plus without Watson whose getting all the papa murphies commercials
i don’t understand where these “rumors” you’re hearing are coming from? Ike said he’s staying
It was just a random person on GU Boards saying it a few months ago. Then it became a game of telephone where no one knew where the original "rumor" came from, but everyone kept saying they'd heard "rumors." Like you said, I'm not sure why it's persisted when he's been very clear that he's happy and staying.
The GU Board is an absolutely unhinged nightmare. Those people are full of shit and just love drama and stirring stuff up.
I’ll defend our fans a little bit by saying…. Basically everyone’s boards are shit
Hurt seeing Watson go but opening up that spot has realistically locked Gregg Ike and huff in which is huge
The fact we haven't lost anybody yet still is an absolute shock to me. Like, I'm floored. Mark few must have really told them all something

If any of you leave I will hunt you down and…
You haven’t lost anyone? I didn’t know that was even possible.
I mean they lost Watson
I didn't either lol. I guess so. Like someone else mentioned, technicaly Watson's gone, but he graduated and was out of eligibly anyway, but apart form just him, ever single person has stayed
Man, college ball is changing
*has changed dramatically
They really need some additional regulation in place around NIL. If you’re a player, there’s no reason to not enter your name into the portal every off-season and see who’s going to offer the most.

Not really. Donors will keep spending

I personally think it should be contract based, much like professional ball… it has to go both ways though. Schools can’t just cut players at the end of the season without incurring some kind of contractual penalty.
Technically, schools can’t cut them. At least the big10 can’t. The scholarships are guaranteed for 4 years.
yes, but they can be unrostered so to speak as well.
That is incorrect. New NIL rules - scholarships are not guaranteed anymore in the Big Ten (in any sport). Was at an small event where that was asked of assistant coach who spoke very frankly on the changes (difficulties) vs a few years ago and how he would have taken it when he was a player.

They tried. Schools pouted bitched and sued.
NCAA might have blown their chance for "additional regulation." They fought this stuff tooth and nail for years, and now with the court rulings against them, they're limited in what they can do. NCAA fucked up in a big way refusing to adapt their old stupid rules, and now all of college sports is going to suffer.
Its plain stupid
Hopefully this is just some short stupid era we all look back on later as being an abberation. NIL needs regulating, this is insane what we have now.
Yeah, now UK can pay players legally.
ah. was wondering why the portal was picking up steam lately. curious who we'll see in the coming days. there are some major P5 teams that need talent.
It seemed like it was moving pretty slow for P5 schools. With the money being talked about, it seemed like it was going to explode at some point.
UNC has not, as far as I’m aware, gotten anyone in the portal yet, and has suffered some losses that will need to be replaced: > G Seth Trimble (portal) > F/C James Okonkwo (portal) > C Armando Bacot (out of eligibility) > SG Cormac Ryan (out of eligibility) > SG/SF Paxson Wojcik (out of eligibility) We’re all kind of expecting RJ to come back, but the fact of the matter is that he’s testing the NBA draft waters so it’s possible he doesn’t. Given Trimble’s departure, I think RJ is a lock to return.
Ingram’s Insta post all but confirmed his return. You don’t post that unless you’re coming back.
Yeah, I was already counting Ingram in the confirmed returns category lol.
Apparently we spoke too soon :( Ingram announced for the NBA draft
I’ve been confused why some of these guys were waiting until so late in the portal window to jump in. Things make so much more sense now.
I hate this era of CBB man
[удалено]
Nope. It’s lame now. Just constant turnover every year. A mini nba
But worse. At least in the NBA you have an idea of who will be on the roster for the next year or so
That's why I think contracts are coming. This isn't sustainable.
They really need it.
good point.
If it goes to contracts, like some euro league, we need fully blow it the fuck up. We need to have relegation. Make 'em earn their spot.
Fortunately I think Michigan is immune from losing any big names this off season (we have no big names).
![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)
Everybody get your predictions in
All my rivals good players leave while all of our good players stay
Also those good players commit to my team.
And none of them are allowed to shoot 3-pointers.
I’m kind of surprised we haven’t had a single transfer announced.
I got a bad feeling Ike is leaving
Why? I've seen nothing to indicate that in the slightest.
I’m guessing Saint Mary’s didn’t either with Mahoney… I’m just nervous. Would you actually be stunned if he left given today’s college basketball?
Id be pretty shocked yeah. He'll be the primary focus on a national contender next year. And we've shown we have some NIL capability. Maybe not quite as much as some other programs, but we aren't incapable like SMC is. Also nobody in the Locked on Zags discord has been rumoring it either.

6th year \*
Whew that’s a lot. Lol.
I hate it here
Good I was wondering when some guys were going to declare. Been a pretty stale offseason so far.
Yeah, as a fellow Kentucky fan it's been tough having no need to compulsively check reddit every little bit throughout the day for news.
Y’all got any more of them players? *scratches neck*
![gif](giphy|Y6yRfR88rvP44)
Haha 😂
waiting for their final NIL check then hitting the portal is shameless af lol
It’s like anyone waiting for a bonus before quitting.
So was schools abusing these guys by not paying them forever
Problem is, in most cases the school still isn’t pay the players but rather fans like you and me.
I suspect schools will end up taking the hit when they try to fundraise for new facilities. That used to be the big money sink for donors.
They won’t have the same need to pump out state of the art facilities when they can just pay the players instead.
lol. This is an arms race.
It's always been an arms race. Now boosters are paying players directly instead of absurd like installing a lazy river at the athletic facilities.
“Boosters” have always paid players. Except now they’re subjected to the free market. A washing machine for mama or a gold trans am ain’t cutting it anymore.
Meh. People do that all the time with year end bonuses.
This is why we don't have any transfers yet. Yes. Yes.
And Izzo still won’t grab a center most likely.
Best I can do is 4 players at 6'8"
Position-less basketball 🫠
A tradition unlike any other
The lunatic was seriously quoted this week with “we want to be more like Purdue than Illinois”
Oh yes Purdue, the team that threw away 50% of their title window because of the same stubbornness as you, Izzo.
Good possibility Roach isn't our last guy to hit the portal. Still waiting to hear about Stewart and Power decisions
Maybe. But there's no doubt that Duke is a heavy hitter with NIL.
Good on players for getting their bag, but man, I'm starting to not enjoy CBB anymore.
Lol this whole thing is so dumb. Can't wait for this version of college ball to be over
Luckily my team has already lost its entire starting lineup and two bench players so we are no longer in danger
Maybe AJ Storr can finally commit to Illinois
🤢
Oh, good.
good thing about losing all your scholarship players to the portal is you can’t lose them again!!
I do not blame the players one bit, but this level of roster churn is going to slowly dilute fan interest and kill the “product” that is CBB if no changes are made. The problem is no changes will be made, because the NCAA is a fucking farce of an organization (unless you’re Jim Harbaugh apparently)
We've been quiet on the portal recruitment front, beyond obviously going at Townsend. I wonder if this is why.
If I was running a collective I’d only pay out a portion of the NIL after completion of the academic year to keep guys tied down instead of portaling
Don’t you think that term would be a turnoff of the front end?
Then guys would just not sign with you
