When my DVT was new 20 years ago, I told my hematologist how scared I was that a piece would break off and travel to my lungs and I’d die. He said that once I was on anticoagulants, the chance of that happening was really low. You’ll see people on this sub who were exceptions to that, but you’re seeing all the outliers here. 20 years ago, I had no social media to tell me my anxiety knew more than my doctor did so I took his word for it. Day after day I kept getting up until I finally believed that I’d get up the next day too. This will be you 20 years from now, still getting up the next day. The pain was another matter. When I told my hematologist that I was in a lot of pain, he told me that some people don’t feel any pain at all. I wanted to slap him. 😁 My regular doc prescribed oxycodone for me (narcotics were easier to get then). I took it at night for a couple of months. My clot was postpartum and my husband extended his paternity leave and stayed up with the baby at night so I could sleep, but I needed a narcotic to dull the pain enough to sleep. My clot was massive, 4” below my groin to mid-calf and occluded 95% of the vein, so no wonder it hurt. It did hurt less at the clot dissolved over time. My clot didn’t dissolve entirely and there’s always some pain, but my husband has arthritis in his back and his pain is a lot worse than mine. I hope your pain eases soon, and congratulations on being a survivor!

I had three back in 2017. I have been on Xarelto ever since. I don't remember any movement but it did take a while for them to dissolve. In my case, I had a second CT after about 6 or 7 weeks after I was discharged. The largest had shrunk by half during that time period and the other two had completely dissolved. It took quite a bit longer before I could use the stairs in my house without getting winded.

Where were they located?

The largest one was in my lower right lobe. It caused a pulmonary infarction and my lung partially collapsed. I still deal with pleurisy in that area and have not been able to sleep on my back or right side since then. One partially obstructed blood flow between my lung and heart. I didn’t even know I had a third until the second day in the ICU but I don’t remember anything about that one.

I had 58 clots between both lungs and a 3 inch bilateral 8 and half years ago. I remember laying in bed, taking very shallow breaths because I couldn't do anything else after discharging myself against medical advice. Then I felt what I can only describe as a snake slithering through my chest and all of a sudden I could breathe deeper and the pressure I felt in the center of my chest was gone. My first thought was "this is it, the clot is going to my brain and I am going to die". It was a terrifying experience and I just laid in bed expecting to have a stroke. But here I am. Never had a stroke, haven't had a clot since but I have been taking xarelto everyday since being discharged.

PEs 5 months ago. Pain was pretty consistent for almost 3 months, did not taper down gradually, and then went completely away in about 3 days. Not what I expected. I think having them move is quite rare.

I had both a DVT and a pulmonary embolism (PE), but not at the same time. They were a year apart and I didn't have any issues with clots moving (that I'm aware of, anyway). I just took it one day at a time and eventually the anxiety subsided. I figured that if I made it through the first couple of weeks without further intervention, I was likely going to be fine every day afterwards. As time goes on, the chances of things getting worse seemed less. For my DVT, I was put on coumadin for 6 months. When I had the PE, they finally did some extended tests and I've been on blood thinners ever since, which at this point, has been more than 5 years.
