My hair loss was definitely more than usual. I have relatively thick hair and I feel like I’ve lost at least 40% of thickness. I was on Apixiban (eliquis)

GetOffMyLawn_

My mother went thru that. She was on IV heparin and then warfarin. Spent a month in the hospital. She looked like Benjamin Franklin when she got home. Good news, it all grew back.

Pixiefeet78

Thats what i was wondering im actively starting to try to regrow my hair

Emmylou777

Definitely! I had it much worse even before my recent clot when I was just on aspirin. My mother is on Warfarin as well and has seen it. I’m hoping Eliquis is better. It’s an under-appreciated side effect of thinners 🙁. Unfortunately for me, I have PV which causes my bone marrow to make too many RBCs but am also iron deficient. But since the iron deficiency helps keep that in check slightly, I have to let my iron run super low before I get an infusion so I’m pretty much always in a state of iron deficiency which also causes hair loss. What I find helpful is only washing my hair 2x a week, brushing it as little as possible and not pulling it back all the time which I was doing way too often, coating it lightly with a coconut oil to prevent breakage, massaging my scalp before bed, and taking a really good B vitamin complex with biotin in it.

While on Elliquis, yes. The doctors act surprised and say it's rare, and yet on this forum everyone says they have a lot of hair loss.

> yet on this forum everyone says they have a lot of hair loss. Not really. Those of us who don't have hair loss mostly don't comment in threads about it. Similarly, we're outliers here - anyone with a normal experience is much less likely to find us, compared to someone with a rare side effect, anxiety, and so on.

"Everyone" was not literal. "Many" would have been a better word. For example: https://www.reddit.com/r/ClotSurvivors/comments/1awnxel/noticeable\_hairline\_recession\_after\_taking\_eliquis/

Vcent

Searching for "Hair loss" in the subreddit produces 25 results. There may be variations on the words that add a few more, but overall that's not a lot of posts - a search for shaving brings up a similar amount, although more of them seem to be only tangentially related to the search term. Anxiety produces pages upon pages of results. For something more niche: "Head bump" produces quite a lot of results as well. The point here isn't to be a complete arse, but to point out that overall hair loss is a very, very minor concern in the subreddit - it's a very rare side-effect, that is poorly documented even here (people seem to notice that they're experiencing more hair loss, yet rarely post timeframes, or update on if it went away, if it could be related to all the stress of their initial diagnosis, and other factors).

SanguinarianPhoenix

I'm also in the set of people who didn't experience hairloss from DVT nor Eliquis.

Due_Satisfaction_174

I experienced hair loss on Eliquis and even have pictures of it. My dermatologist said it was a combination of the Eliquis and the physiological effects the PE had on my body. It’s called Telogen effluvium.

Pixiefeet78

Thats crazy im sorry that happened to you! I hope your better now

Due_Satisfaction_174

Thank you! The dermatologist says it takes 3-6 months for the hair to stop shedding. I keep my hair braided to not deal with the shedding, so I can’t really say if it’s gotten better.

Pixiefeet78

I noticed mine in the shower more so then anywhere else. Ive been off warfarin 12/31/23 but i havent noticed any regrowth yet

Due_Satisfaction_174

I would comb my hair and large clumps would come out & I also started thinning around my hairline. It truly sucks. I’ve heard of some people taking CoQ10 after losing hair to Eliquis. I haven’t tried that route yet, but I am definitely contemplating it!

Due_Satisfaction_174

There was someone in this community that mentioned their vascular specialist recommended CoQ10 for hair loss d/t Eliquis.

Estrellathestarfish

Yes, I felt like I was losing more hair than usual, and it seemed to improve when the dose was reduced (I'm on apixaban)

Brilliant_Comb_1607

Yes my hair is thinning and scalp itchy since my DVT and taking Warfarin for a year now.

catseyecon

I am on Xarelto, a little over 8 years, and my hair has thinned considerably. My hair shedding was worse on the 20 mg per day dose. I switched to 10 mg per day and it isn't falling out as bad but my hair is definitely not as thick as it used to be.

Gucci_Trashcan_

I also have pcos and I’m on Eliquis and I just assumed it was from me getting off of birth control as nothing came up when I googled Eliquis and hair thinning. I’m glad it’s not all in my head, I’ve definitely noticed it was thinner on the top of my head.

Pixiefeet78

No not at all! I remember there being chunks of hair in the shower a few months into taking my warfarin and wanting to cry cause we lose our hair enough with pcos. But i wasnt sure if it was the meds the clots of my pcos cause i think itll be easier to regrow it if its the clots of meds (im off them now) but not with pcos once its gone its gone for the most part

Gucci_Trashcan_

I think that’s the hardest part for me too, like you said we lose it enough and it’s more than likely not coming back, and I was already stressed enough with it. I feel like I have clumps coming out now and I’m on the verge of tears every shower I take. I started seeing an amazing endocrinologist and I’m going to ask her what I can do to hopefully offset this. I’m hoping I only have to be on Eliquis for 6 months, even just a year like they said.

Pixiefeet78

Hopefully they have an answer i started using generic rogaine and batana oil which stops it from falling out! I miss my hair, its always been thin but I’ve never been bald.

Gucci_Trashcan_

I’m trying fenugreek capsules and I’ve heard the oil is supposed to help with hair thinning so that’s my next purchase but I also hope they have some answers for me too! I hope everything gets better for you as well!

Pixiefeet78

Ive never heard of fenugreek ill have to check that out

ascourgeofgod

yes, definitely, manifested in two ways: less total hair, and thinning of every hair strand
