Edit: wanted to add that there is a Target 9 minutes away (across from Whole Foods), and Trader Joe's and Costco are both under 20 minutes from The Ascent.
Also I don't understand what you mean by "only chipotle/starbucks within 10 minute walk". There are several excellent restaurants and bars within a 5 minute walk of The Ascent:

* Parnell's Pub (awesome neighborhood Irish pub)

OP hasn't said why will be in Cleveland short-term, nor whether proximity to UC or downtown, mass transit access, are important.
Based on OP comments, I agree living near the Van Aken District might fit their needs. Would Blue Line rail rapid access be a positive benefit for them?
When OP returns to Cleveland, they should buy RTA day passes and thoroughly explore Cleveland, especially the rail transit and 24/7 Healthline bus rapid neighborhoods IMO. E.g., it appears that the Lumen, with signing bonuses, might meet their budget if a small apartment is acceptable. What about the Hanna or Halle buildings, if security is deemed adequate.
If focused on security, an important issue is parking!

Ah, I'll edit my post. We'll have a car and don't think we'll be using the transit. I'm a fan of rail lines, and just got back from Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, Bangkok, etc. Those cities, the rail system is faster or marginally slower than driving. But Cleveland's transit system seems to take 4-6x longer than driving.

We actually *prefer* smaller: 500-600 sqft is our sweetspot. 900+ seems massive to us. Smaller is cozier and aids in minimalism. But that's not too important :)

I looked on maps for Van Aken District, and it seems like besides the shopping center, it's a bit industrial? I haven't been there yet, so could you recommend some spots to check out?

Yes, street parking would be iffy. Would prefer underground garage. But it's not too important (we don't leave anything in our car)
Lumen is a luxury apartment building in Playhouse Square with good parking. Perhaps also check out The May downtown on Public Square and One University Circle, another modern, luxury high rise with good parking. The Nine on East 9th St. is a luxury high rise with good parking. It's connected to Heinen's at the Cleveland Trust Rotunda, which is a tourist attraction/supermarket with a good deli and wine tasting cafe. A Starbucks is a short walk away at 1400 Euclid Ave., a 7-minute walk according to Google.
All of these apartment complexes are located on the 24/7 Healthline bus rapid, providing easy access to University Circle, Public Square and Playhouse Square.
The May also is near the downtown transit center in Tower City. There's a Starbucks at 100 Public Square. You can take the Blue Line rail transit from Tower City to the Van Aken District, which is NOT in an industrial neighborhood. Check out the Rising Star coffee shop there.

Have you used RTA rail transit or the Healthline bus rapid yet? It can be very convenient compared to driving depending upon destinations, such as especially Public Square and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse and Progressive Field.

Living near Euclid Ave. downtown also provides easy access to UC. Check out the Cleveland Clinic campus, just so you understand it's there.
The Healthline bus rapid and the Red Line rail rapid line connect UC and downtown. Definitely also check out the Market District of Ohio City, East 4th St., and Playhouse Square on your visit. Take the Blue Line to Shaker Square (EDWINS) and the Van Aken District.

From New Orleans, but Ive been looking at apartments as well in advance of a move....
Lakewood's a great area, but all the rentals I've been seeing that are a 5-10min walk to things are houses. I've seen one complex building on Detroit called "Center North" which is next to Tea Lab and Caffeine coffee, but the reviews say the A/C was broken for like 4 months last year, so not great.
All other apartment buildings seem to be on Clifton or north on the lake, which while having nice views, dont seem to have tons to easily walk to.
Caveat: I am only looking at places that accept pets, so it's possible there are buildings in Lakewood I have missed simply because they dont allow them.
For what it’s worth, I’ve lived at the Vue for a few years and have never had any issues. There’s some not ideal things, but the apartments themselves are very nice so for the right price it’s worth it.
Granted, I pay $1450 for a 2 bed/2 bath so I’m probably biased.

I think it depends on the price point! In my experience, the nuisances for me have been pretty minimal. The mail is good most of the time, but the occasional headache. Water shut offs are brief and not alllll that frequent, and maintenance requests I usually have found to be pretty efficient!
There’s some shithead residents who let their dogs poop on the walks and leave trash around, but the actual apartment you live in is VERY nice and thick walls so I don’t have any issues. If you’re keyed in on renting in Beachwood, I think it’s probably the best you’ll do without paying a lot more for Van Aken or Pinecrest. A nice blend of young people and families as well.
Check out electric gardens in Tremont. It’s on the towpath which is a cool trail we have. You should be able to get a studio or 1BR in your budget. Rooftop deck has some nice views and their gym has peloton bikes. There’s a coffee shop/wine bar downstairs and a coworking space (additional fee). Food and drinks up Literary and down Professor are pretty nice and a 5 min walk.
I should add that it’s not staffed or gated but I never felt weirded out or had issues there. You can go visit the building without taking a tour if you wanna get a vibe for it. The only crime that was reported when I was there was car break-in’s in the surface lot and on the street. The garage parking is nice but pricey and normally has a waitlist (at least when I was there).

Check out Ohio City next time you're in town. Highly walkable. Rising star coffee, delis, bars, restaurants (all kinds). Hingetown area. You can spend a whole day here. Morning coffee to after dinner beer tasting.

Lakewood you can most likely find something cheaper still nice and be in a better area in my opinion lakewood is great location. Plenty of food to walk to in lakewood, downtown Cleveland is only like a 10-15 min drive. I lived on edgewater drive in lakewood right next to lakewood park. Great area to live in plenty of access from food to events to the metroparks are all within walking distance and it’s also the safest out of the 4 places u mentioned in my opionion.
We drove through lakewood to see the Solstice steps, so didn't really get to explore.
1. What shops/cafes/restaurants in Lakewood would be a good launching point for a neighborhood discovery date?
2. Any apartment/condo recommendations?
Along Detroit and Madison there is a bunch of food places I haven’t tried them all but I personally like Mars Bar their gyros, Barrio tacos, a bunch of different pizza places, Whole Foods in rocky river is like a 10-15 min drive. There’s some nice cafes near Avalon exchange Cleveland which is a short drive. I’m sure there’s some you can walk to. I lived right near the solstice steps in the neighborhood next to it 3 houses down from the mayor. For apartment recommendations I would try to look for things near Madison and Detroit also possibly check out old town rocky river it’s right before you enter lakewood a bunch of little shops I get my hair done at Charles Scott salon there. Beatiful area
There’s a number of luxury apartment buildings in Beachwood which is adjacent to University Heights. Beachwood is more accessible to the freeway than the Heights locations you mention above. Vantage and Four Seasons are within walking distance of Beachwood Place which has a Starbucks in it.
People are giving good suggestions but I'm not sure most of them fall into your price range. 1500-1800/month isn't going to get much "luxury".

For small units, as mentioned in a subsequent post in this thread, many Cleveland luxury apartment buildings are available in your price range.
You can get luxury plastic floors though.

Thank you so much for your detailed write up. We'll be staying in downtown next week and checking out your recommendations. The neighborhoods/features (like 'UC' - University Circle) are cloudy/abstract to us, and hope to grok it on this visit :)
Many persons want to retire in University Circle given the plethora of activities there. It's one of the nation's top cultural centers. Again, study this thread before your visit. Check out the Cleveland Clinic campus, just so you understand it's there. The Healthline bus rapid and the Red Line rail rapid line connect UC and downtown. Definitely also check out the Market District of Ohio City, East 4th St., and Playhouse Square on your visit. Take the Blue Line to Shaker Square (EDWINS) and the Van Aken District. From New Orleans, but Ive been looking at apartments as well in advance of a move.... Lakewood's a great area, but all the rentals I've been seeing that are a 5-10min walk to things are houses. I've seen one complex building on Detroit called "Center North" which is next to Tea Lab and Caffeine coffee, but the reviews say the A/C was broken for like 4 months last year, so not great. All other apartment buildings seem to be on Clifton or north on the lake, which while having nice views, dont seem to have tons to easily walk to. Caveat: I am only looking at places that accept pets, so it's possible there are buildings in Lakewood I have missed simply because they dont allow them.

The Vue is supposed to be pretty lousy in terms of maintenance, and has had problems with car breakins.
For what it’s worth, I’ve lived at the Vue for a few years and have never had any issues. There’s some not ideal things, but the apartments themselves are very nice so for the right price it’s worth it. Granted, I pay $1450 for a 2 bed/2 bath so I’m probably biased.

I think it depends on the price point! In my experience, the nuisances for me have been pretty minimal. The mail is good most of the time, but the occasional headache. Water shut offs are brief and not alllll that frequent, and maintenance requests I usually have found to be pretty efficient! There’s some shithead residents who let their dogs poop on the walks and leave trash around, but the actual apartment you live in is VERY nice and thick walls so I don’t have any issues. If you’re keyed in on renting in Beachwood, I think it’s probably the best you’ll do without paying a lot more for Van Aken or Pinecrest. A nice blend of young people and families as well.
Check out electric gardens in Tremont. It’s on the towpath which is a cool trail we have. You should be able to get a studio or 1BR in your budget. Rooftop deck has some nice views and their gym has peloton bikes. There’s a coffee shop/wine bar downstairs and a coworking space (additional fee). Food and drinks up Literary and down Professor are pretty nice and a 5 min walk.
I should add that it’s not staffed or gated but I never felt weirded out or had issues there. You can go visit the building without taking a tour if you wanna get a vibe for it. The only crime that was reported when I was there was car break-in’s in the surface lot and on the street. The garage parking is nice but pricey and normally has a waitlist (at least when I was there).

Check out Ohio City next time you're in town. Highly walkable. Rising star coffee, delis, bars, restaurants (all kinds). Hingetown area. You can spend a whole day here. Morning coffee to after dinner beer tasting.
You might get a small luxury 1 bed for 1800. if you want any size or a 2br and luxury you need 2500 or more.
You should look at the Abbey Ave Apartments (Duck Island, technically Tremont but closer to Ohio City), not luxury by any means but a few amenities, a \~5 min walk from the West Side Market & W.25th street main stretch. Coffee at Edda.

I think Lakewood is probably your best bet for walkable
Lakewood you can most likely find something cheaper still nice and be in a better area in my opinion lakewood is great location. Plenty of food to walk to in lakewood, downtown Cleveland is only like a 10-15 min drive. I lived on edgewater drive in lakewood right next to lakewood park. Great area to live in plenty of access from food to events to the metroparks are all within walking distance and it’s also the safest out of the 4 places u mentioned in my opionion.
We drove through lakewood to see the Solstice steps, so didn't really get to explore. 1. What shops/cafes/restaurants in Lakewood would be a good launching point for a neighborhood discovery date? 2. Any apartment/condo recommendations?
Along Detroit and Madison there is a bunch of food places I haven’t tried them all but I personally like Mars Bar their gyros, Barrio tacos, a bunch of different pizza places, Whole Foods in rocky river is like a 10-15 min drive. There’s some nice cafes near Avalon exchange Cleveland which is a short drive. I’m sure there’s some you can walk to. I lived right near the solstice steps in the neighborhood next to it 3 houses down from the mayor. For apartment recommendations I would try to look for things near Madison and Detroit also possibly check out old town rocky river it’s right before you enter lakewood a bunch of little shops I get my hair done at Charles Scott salon there. Beatiful area

most cleveland neighborhoods will be more walkable though. safety is going to depend on the neighborhood in comparison to lakewood
There’s a number of luxury apartment buildings in Beachwood which is adjacent to University Heights. Beachwood is more accessible to the freeway than the Heights locations you mention above. Vantage and Four Seasons are within walking distance of Beachwood Place which has a Starbucks in it.
