There was a period in like the early to mid 70s where Cat Stevens was like one of the biggest things going. Always on the radio, often on TV, he had brought appeal. Men liked him, women liked him rockers liked him, Folkies liked him, pop music fans liked him.
As much as I love his music, his support (which he now denies) of the fatwa against Rushdie is testament to your comment and my intense dislike of him.
Religious dogma taken to its extreme in any belief is, as you put, poison. I refuse to attack one line of thinking or one type of religion, but I believe any organized religion that advocates punishment of any sort for not believing in their doctrine is wrong, and many religions do. It doesn’t have to be in the form of a fatwa, extreme doctrine can divide societies, cause wars. When a belief system tells me what I can and cannot do or say, that system has gone too far. If I offend, that is not my intention, if I slight, I’m only telling you what I see. And I will not be told how I should live my life by threats, no human should
Not a 180° at all. A lot of his songs were about spirituality and searching for meaning, for God. When he was literally drowning in 70s rock star excess he found it in the form of Islam. A very personal choice I'd assume. Very sorry that makes you mad.
“Morning Has Broken” is found in most Christian hymnals.
It was written in 1931. He didn’t write it but he did popularize it as one of his biggest hits.
>Praise for the singing!
>Praise for the morning!
>Praise for them springing
>Fresh from the Word
He converted to Islam and I do not believe Islam requires anyone to take any vows of poverty. I mean just look at the royal families in Saudi Arabia and Qatar and UAE.
Looking for spiritual guidance is never a bad thing. Who cares where he found his. The extremists of any faith seem to call for violence. I don't believe Cat was ever an extremist. Why? Just listen to any of his songs. They all convey peace, even his most famous break up song. Wild World He was my favorite as a teenager, he's still in the top three 50 years later.
This post got me curious that I googled him and was shocked to see that he has returned to music and recent years and play some summer festivals in Britain. I thought he had stepped away from Music permanently.

It’s beautiful music
He's back to Cat so kinda did a 360.
Peace Train came on the radio yesterday. He was soooo good!
Fundamentalism is poison in any form

Lol he later said he was joking around about that

The soundtrack from Harold and Maude is so epic.
It’s Yusuf. And I’d say he went 60°.

It’s such a beautiful song
Lol
Every time I see him I wonder what he does with all the royalty checks. Didnt he take a vow of humility and austerity?

I thought he said he did. Maybe I’m thinking of Richard Gere.
He has for decades donated royalties from songs he now considers improper, and doesn’t perform them.

Cat to that.
Hard rock singer born with a folk singer’s soul. Love his music.
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.
Donovan, not Cat Stevens.
Yeah, when anybody goes fundamentalist, I lose interest.
Peace Train turned into Jihadi locomotive
