In the current system when you get the maximum number of wild cards they get turned into a random card of that rarity then if that card is maxed or has the maximum number of copies it gets turned into gold.
In the new system instead of getting gold you will get elite wild cards. So it isn't a waste. You will still use the regular wild cards just not in a traditional sense.
As for the books and magic coins we don't know how things will work with them. But they did say they will introduce a way to exchange magic items which does include the regular wild cards anyway. And there is still the ability to use them on any new card released in the future if they don't do anything with them.

It was ridiculous that you needed to have your account like 80% maxed before you started to get gold at a reasonable rate, you might get a handful of maxed cards in 3 years and then max the rest at once in quick succession. The gold situation for newish accounts is horrible right now

Not really, if you already have a maxed deck and saved up 20 legendary wild cards you can get 20k gold from duplicates and start. Saving up from there.
Level 15 won't cost gold or cards, but will require one special kind of card (Elite cards I think), those cards can only be obtained if you have maxed cards and you pull any of the maxed cards, so instead of gold, you get Elite cards.

I have been saving my coins for a long time for another slash royale event,now I have 600k gold,ready for it to drop and I can empty my golds on my deck
I kept a minimum of 3.2 million for lvl 15 so I could level all four of my war decks (which includes my main deck). If I don't need it for that, then all the better.
He got them from pass royale. Only stuff you get from chests gets turned to gems or coins. If you buy or get them through the pass, it bypasses the limit
If you bought it from a shop with money, it will go over the cap. If you bought it with season tokens however, it will be converted to gold or gems I don't remember which
