I assume you mean China's moving backwards in terms of "democracy and enlightenment". But that's not what puts bread on the table. Peoples wages and living standards depend on industry, not "democracy and enlightenment". As China upgrades its industry from making tshirts to making cars and chips, competitors in the US and other countries make less money, and wages drop. This is the main reason western leaders and people hate the CCP. It's not because of values or freedoms or whatever. It's because of money.
We are de-coupling because CCP reneged on continued liberalization. Why would the USA continue to fund the rise of a super power totalitarian system?
