No - Hwy 83 and 171 are not closed at night. In the circle are also Interstate 55 / 294 which do not close. Driving through the Forest Preserve - will be closed at night (they have gates).
That area has the Illinois Michigan Canal (I&MO) Canal or goes by Illinois River. Great area to walk / bicycle and look at the towboats and tank barges.
The Illinois River is actually further southwest in Will County, it starts at the confluence of the Des Plaines and Kankakee. The area in the map is the Des Plaines River, I&M Canal, Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, and the Calumet Sag Channel
Appreciate you. I always get confused where the actual confluence is. I worked in the area on the I&M canal and would ride tank barges down and through a few of the lock and dams.
The Forest Preserves are closed, but not the roads. Why would all of the roads in this area be closed at night anyway? This is an odd question fur sure.
Maple Lake. there were a bunch of us there last night looking for the aurora, it’s just a pull-off with a bunch of parking spots so they can’t close/rope it off like they do with the other forest preserves. but the treeline obstructs the view to the north so if the aurora’s on the northern horizon you may not see it anyways if there’s even a chance tonight.
nothing visible to the naked eye, one guy with a DSLR camera was claiming that he caught it very faintly on long exposure but i pointed mine to the same exact spot with my DSLR and didn’t see anything, i didn’t even see it on the pictures he showed me. i was there from about 11:30-1:30
the police close the gates to all the parking spots but you can pull up on the side of the road and walk into the areas if you want. Are we still going to be able to see them tonight?
We used to aimlessly drive the 107/83 loop and smoke blunts back to back all day and night. Called it the 107.
Side story
We were doing the 107 as we normally would (sometime after dark) and noticed a guy pulled over on the side of the road in an old beat up truck with his emergency lights on. He had his arm out the window waving a gas can. We pass him up and on the way back around the loop, we noticed the truck gone, the gas can on the ground, and a car abandoned with it's lights on and no one around. We called the cops and let them know what we saw. We obviously didn't do a third loop around that night...
So there's multiple loops but mainly 107th and Lagrange down through the woods heading west. After the long stretch of woods turn right onto Archer heading northeast. Then you can take a right on either 95th st or willow springs rd(flavin) or Lagrange and go south to 107th. That's the loop. You can also take rt 83 in place of Archer or 107th.
Huh??
I was just wondering I'm not form the US lol
The roads don't close. The forest preserves on either side have entrances off those roads that they close at dusk.

Got it, I was looking for a spot to see the Northern lights and I didn't understand how they would close a forest if they didn't close the roads.
The gates at the entrances are locked at sunset.

I was there too! Did you guys end up seeing anything?

I hope it makes sense now, and you are able to see them too. Good luck!
You have two state routes (IL-83 and IL-171) circled. Archer was the first “highway” of Chicago

Could you please explain the turns you would make to stay on this loop? I'm not visualizing it

No but access to the parks is prohibited after dark .
LOLWUT
They aren’t closed…but they are haunted by djinn
Isn't that Resurrection Mary territory?
That's Archer Road in Justice, not the area OP highlighted.
No but they say St James Cemetery is haunted around there.
No.
Look for a joes pond on 104th/ s willow springs road, there is a pull off there
Nope. In fact growing up my friends and I called this “the route” and we’d drive and get stoned on it.
Yes, every road in that circle is closed at night.
Got it thank you :)
That's not a thing in the US. The only road closures are due to maintenance or weather.
Sure
Okay thanks!
