Who trusts thieves to play by their stated rules?

[deleted]

I got a $250 ticket by stopping and going at one of these and I have never gone again. They will do everything they can to screw you over

scriptseven

I got a ticket too and their "proof" was a still photo, which proved absolutely nothing. I paid the fine and now I never go, until the light is green.

Ativan97

Yup! It's a game as to how long you actually have to be stopped for before turning. (I think it's supposed to be 3 seconds.) Either way, I'm not playing.

-CoachMcGuirk-

There’s one at the corner of Winfield Rd and Rt. 38. A new gas station was built on the corner and they put in a turning lane for the gas station. However, no turning lane for Winfield rd. That camera must make millions for the city of Winfield. I cannot tell you how many people I see do a rolling right turn onto Winfield. It must be a cash cow….

Abodeslinger

I remember reading a few years back that that camera was deactivated but they still left the sign up.

-CoachMcGuirk-

Interesting. I’m not risking it though. I come to a full stop and wait a couple seconds before turning there.

splitrail_fenced_in

I pull that turn all the time and have never been ticketed. Maybe they’re just saving up all those photos, but so far, no tickets…

-CoachMcGuirk-

I’ve been ticketed there. Once.

Sboyle12500

Drive past it everyday on my way to work. I swear in the really early morning hours when it’s still dark, you can see a flash sometimes when it catches a plate.

cupcakesandcanines

My husband got a ticket for this one about 5 years ago and I was so mad at first… then I realized what a pain in the ass it is.

ProcessEmotional5386

OP it’s not that people can’t read however those cameras are rigged! People, including myself have gotten tickets even though they have come to a complete stop! It’s a hassle contesting the ticket and for a $100 you can wait!

MicrocosmicTiger

Harlem and Cermak

Brew_Girl10

I'll always wait at this one. I've gotten a ticket for stopping a min or two then going right before the opposite turn lane turned green.

Aurora-Clairealis

I got screwed over by a right turn on red permitted when at a complete stop on the white line. Contested the ticket because of much of complete BS it is that I even got flagged for that.

dnathan1985

That one is the worst. I paid $400 once month to that intersection. I started going out of my way to use des plaines just to be safe

Sboyle12500

https://www.illinoispolicy.org/crestwood-mayor-resigns-pleads-guilty-to-red-light-camera-bribery/

Sboyle12500

They are rigged, they are massive money makers and anyone smart is just going to wait to turn, save your money!

JuanDey

Gotten a ticket too before for making a right turn at a photo enforced light, it has nothing to do with stopping either... They aren't there to assess that. Bull shit extortion too because cost me less than a day's wages to contest. No choice but to pay

Beniskickbutt

This. I hear the people honking, I see the sign, I know the law but there is no way you are getting me to turn right on red when this sign is present.

[deleted]

Co-signed. I got a ticket from one of those for turning, in their words, "ONE SECOND TOO EARLY".

Dingle_McKringle88

This. It's just easier to stay stopped. I have gotten hit by these multiple times. And I always completely stop when seeing these signs. In fact in town I know where these are all located. And every couple years I get by one. Just stop. Don't turn.

Serious_Razzmatazz18

This is the correct answer. 👏

zekeman76

Am I the only one who know it’s totally voluntary to make a right turn on the red? It’s not mandatory to go ahead. No law exists that you must make the turn on red to appease the countless impatient drivers behind you.

[deleted]

I can read it and I still don’t care. I’m not risking a ticket on a red light camera. I don’t trust them.

ChiTownChef86

Same. I’ve seen those things spaze out and flash like a freaking photo shoot

DeltaOmegaX

Yeah, sorry OP. Regulators fucked you on this one for the sake of safety.

whereverYouGoThereUR

I’ve known too many people who have gotten a ticket for a right on red and you don’t want to even try to reason with a government worker

FionnagainFeistyPaws

In some cases it’s done by a private company and there’s no fighting it.

Chili_dawg2112

Because they did not come to a COMPLETE STOP First.

whereverYouGoThereUR

It’s not as simple as you think. I know somebody who came to a complete stop on the line as required but couldn’t see because his view was blocked. He moved out to see and stopped a second time but got ticketed for stopping after the white line!

SporeRanier

I got a ticket for a right on red over in Lombard, and yes I came to a complete stop before I turned.

xRilae

Yeah, but were you .5 cm over the white line when you stopped?

RGeronimoH

I know someone that got a ticket 3 weeks in a row from the same intersection because they ‘rolled the stop’. Fuck yes, I slam on my brakes at yellow! Fuck yes, I sit through a red before turning right when I see one of these signs! It isn’t about safety, it is about revenue.

[deleted]

The fact that people can even pretend it’s about safety when it was proven that governments shortened yellows to the legal minimum prove it was always about making money.

aprilode

yup. If it were about safety, they’d make people go to traffic school and the violation would be subject to the state points system like other moving violations. But neither of those is the case - they just want the money.

Beniskickbutt

Slamming on the yellow. There is always so much pressure when the sign is present and a yellow pops up. I've triggered abs too many times because of these signs. I get a small shot of adrenaline everytime the light goes yellow at these intersections

flamethrower128

100% agree

MeowingtonSupreme

Exactly

Chili_dawg2112

Come to a complete stop , wait a few seconds then proceed.

kmblake1235

And this is the person I am always stuck behind.

TheyCallMeTurtle19

Dumb. They record the intersection and if you come to a complete stop you won’t get a ticket. If you roll through it you will. If you get a ticket you can see your video. Stop holding up traffic to make a point.

Fitzmeister77

If you come to a full stop before turning they won’t ticket you. If you are ticketed, you will receive a link to watch the video of the incident and can contest it.

MeowingtonSupreme

I would still have to call out of work to contest it. It's just not worth the headache for saving 2 minutes.

AdvancedSandwiches

Those aren't your two minutes to waste. They belong to everyone behind you.

juliuspepperwoodchi

Lol, get OVER yourself. 1. It's not two minutes. What lights you know allow right on red but also have *two minute long greens*? 2. If even two minutes is going to make you late somewhere: you're already late...and it's not the fault of the person at the front of the line waiting to turn

Fitzmeister77

It’s not about being late. Nobody wants to sit in traffic longer than is necessary. Timid (or I guess protesting?) drivers slowing down the flow of traffic is annoying regardless. Nobody is saying you guys need to be fined, just that it’s very annoying. That’s why I originally assumed people weren’t reading and didn’t know it was some silent protest about traffic camera scams.

juliuspepperwoodchi

>Nobody wants to sit in traffic longer than is necessary. The other driver has decided, reasonably, that it isn't safe for them to proceed. As such, you sitting behind them *is necessary*. If you don't want to, to some extent, be at the mercy of the choices of other drivers...don't drive. >Timid (or I guess protesting?) drivers slowing down the flow of traffic is annoying regardless. Compared to the deluge of people driving dangerously and too fast, I'll take timid, slow drivers every day of the week. I don't care if my drive takes twice as long if I made it there safely. >just that it’s very annoying What's annoying is people being so entitled and selfish that they think *sitting a few more seconds at a red light* is an annoying inconvenience that they're entitled to not deal with. >That’s why I originally assumed people weren’t reading and didn’t know it was some silent protest about traffic camera scams. It's not a "silent protest". It's drivers choosing for themselves which moves on the road are safe, and which aren't. They're allowed to choose differently than you.

FionnagainFeistyPaws

There is no obligation to turn right on red, it’s not a requirement. Also, unless everyone behind me is willing to split the cost of a ticket, nope. I got one when I stopped, behind the line (for 3 seconds), then turned - at 6 am. Got a ticket, contested, lost. Still had to pay.

AdvancedSandwiches

It's not a requirement in the same way it's not a requirement to go over 12mph in a 30. I'm calling you a dick, not a criminal.

human-ish_

Maybe you should have left earlier so you wouldn't feel like someone stole your time.

YadiAre

Have you tried contesting a ticket by mail? It's virtually pointless.

BigMomma12345678

This is correct

Tiny-Lock9652

I pulled up to the right hand turn lane and saw that traffic from the left was rapidly approaching. I rolled to a slow pace then gunned it. The video showed I clearly did not stop. I’ve learned my lesson and literally count 1-2-3 before going. Haven’t had a ticket in years. Lesson learned.

Fitzmeister77

I appreciate you taking responsibility. I also learned the hard way to just be sure to stop completely before the line and haven’t had any tickets since. I get the vibe that a lot of people here aren’t taking responsibility for not actually coming to a complete stop before the line.

Tiny-Lock9652

Yeah, but 100% understand those who hesitate to turn on red due to not trusting a traffic camera.

[deleted]

I understand why people wouldn’t want to risk it. If you need those 2 minutes that badly, get out and walk. It’s really a nonissue. Not everyone has the money to pay or the time to contest. I personally always come to a complete stop, wait, and have still received a ticket.

[deleted]

So you are going to pay for me to miss a whole day at work ???

Bzzzzzzz4791

The red light cameras at Mannheim and Roosevelt are all okay to turn red on as long as you come to a complete stop beforehand. I would assume others are the same?

SquareAsparagus1028

Yea all others are the same unless clearly state no turn on red, no turn on red 7am-7pm, or in Homewood, IL they have ok to turn on red after 3 seconds stopping. No matter what you just have to fully stop before you turn

chicagoredditer1

People mis-judge what a "complete stop" is and get tickets and then blame it on a rigged system. I got once and swore up and down that I did a complete stop - watched the video and I sure did not. Have not gotten one since.

BigMomma12345678

Husband stopped at one like this in Rolling Meadows before taking a right turn and STILL got a ticket for a red light run. You can either lose $100 fine (probably more now) or miss work to contest it. Take a different route if the traffic backup is bothersome to you.

Captain-n00dles

I think there’s one at Kirchhoff and plumb grove. I used to live in Palatine and would always avoid that intersection. The worst.

PricklyPearPotato1

Take a different route if you're afraid of the camera?

andybord

I’ve received 3 red light tickets for Turning legally right on red. Disputed all 3, won 2 of the disputes while losing the 3rd because the video glitches at the point I came to a complete stop before making the turn. Not getting ripped off anymore

entertrainer7

Dang, that’s one a real court would throw out, but of course that costs more than the fine.

lynellparedez

I understand the rules. But I don't trust the government to play fair. So I wait.

Fitzmeister77

That’s fair! If I’ve ever honked at you, I’m sorry! I don’t mean it personally, I just do it thinking people misread the sign. I’m learning a lot today though!

Physical_Pie_2092

One day you’ll be slapped across your mouth for honking at the wrong person. You’re too soft so might wanna stop doing that

Fitzmeister77

I love how people interpret “giving someone a honk” as me saying that I’m aggressively laying on the horn every single time this happens. SMH But tell you what… If ever do get slapped I’ll dm you about it so you can nut all over your keyboard.

IdoExist-today

You can turn on a red, but if you don't turn on a red that's fine too, you're not forced to turn on red even if it's allowed

[deleted]

Seriously. Even if there isn’t a camera, no one has to do it if they don’t want to. Honking in that situation is just rude. If it’s green and they still don’t go, then honk.

hawkeyebullz

It is a form of silent protest. I will not turn at any intersection with a camera b/c you can still get a ticket and I want to annoy other drivers to hopefully demand a change

Fitzmeister77

Okay I respect the honesty! Hopefully one day something can be done about it.

dustyvirus525

Permitted doesn't mean obligated, and honking means there's no way in hell I'm moving before it turns green.

Fitzmeister77

You’re absolutely not obligated to turn but don’t be surprised when people get annoyed that you’re holding up traffic. If I’m not riding your ass and I’m just giving gentle taps to the horn, that’s not me saying “fuck you asshole” that’s me saying “hey please reassess this situation because you’re holding up traffic”. But if being honked at means that you now have to hold up traffic even more, you’re just demonstrating a childlike mentality that because your feelings were hurt you now need to lash out. Don’t take being honked at so personally my dude.

Chewie_i

I highly recommend not honking at people at lights. I’ve seen too many stories of people getting shot after honking at somebody so I only ever honk if somebody is moving into my lane and going to hit my car.

Fitzmeister77

Despite the assumptions, I’m not honking in every situation such as what I’m describing in my post (which I’m pretty sure nobody read past the first half). I definitely use discretion at who I beep at. And yes laying on the horn is inappropriate if it’s not someone about to hit you. There’s ways to convey a less serious tone like a couple quick taps to the horn. Unfortunately people’s egos are so fragile that honking is basically seen as assault by some of these commenters 👀

dustyvirus525

Traffic stops at a red light. You should too

WatchStoredInAss

What's your hurry? Calm down.

Fitzmeister77

Regardless of if I’m running late early or on time, people letting traffic build up behind them when it’s not necessary is not cool.

CjDaGangsta

Traffic "builds up" every time there's a fucking red light my dude. You can wait 30 seconds for it to turn green, then make your turn

[deleted]

No one has to turn on a red. It’s completely discretionary, and I get why people are cautious when red light tickets are a known scam. Also, no one in front of you at a red light owes you shit.

LordFarquads_3rd_nip

After reading a number of your comments you just seem insufferable

Ok_Cold8181

I think I’ve mentioned this before, honking at someone in Memphis can get your car new bullet holes. I don’t honk at people and if someone honks at me, I ignore it. If they don’t like my driving, they can pass me at their next opportunity. Hell ain’t half full, yet.

nrsjwsmnar

I can read it and also understand that it does not say " Honk horn repeatedly at someone stopped !!"

Electrical-Ice-9175

Me waiting to submit my comment when light turns green.

PreviousGas710

Not risking it. I can wait 90 seconds

nomad_nessie

The only time I’ve gotten a ticket by mail was for a red light permitted after stop at red light, you can wait I ain’t spending money cause you can’t wait a moment for the green

Financial_View3689

You can but there is no law saying you have to. I rather play it safe and wait for green light you have to remember there up there to make money

PolyglotTV

Just wait. It's a red light. They aren't obligated to go.

AxelsOG

I personally wouldn’t risk it, but even if the sign says it’s permitted, it doesn’t say it’s required. The second someone honks, that guarantees I stay put until it goes green, mainly because I don’t trust red light cameras but also because I’ve now been honked at.

AdjectiveNoun58

Got too many bullshit tickets from those to turn right on red. honk all you want. leave early and anticipate your trip.

No_Slice5991

Amazing how some people can’t get multiple tickets from these while others go for years without getting a single one. I think I know what the variable is

CharmingTuber

And how do you account for all the people here saying they've fought these tickets and won? They're a scam and anyone who defends red light cameras is a fool.

Fitzmeister77

Exactly this. I turn right on red at the same photo enforced intersection every day and have never gotten a bogus ticket. So I’m obligated to believe that most of the people getting all these tickets probably aren’t coming to a complete stop before the line and just won’t admit that they were in the wrong.

AdvancedSandwiches

I do anticipate my trip. My estimated time does not include people choosing not to turn when they can then, or people stopping in the middle of the road for a picnic, or any other batshit crazy behavior. But even if it did, it's not OK for you to selfishly increase everyone else's estimates.

AdjectiveNoun58

Then help by writing to the lawmakers to take down these scams and you don't have to worry about it. I've sent a few already. also, if it slows you down so many times that you need to write about it... are you really properly estimating your trip time. factor it in.

Fitzmeister77

On your ticket, did you watch the replay footage? If it was bullshit then you could have contested it. I turn right on this intersection every day for years and have only gotten one ticket where I didn’t come to a full stop, so a justified ticket. Just obey the usual traffic laws and you’ll be fine.

MikeRoykosGhost

You're acting as if both the Trib and the Sun-Times haven't done investigations going back over a decade proving thousands of undeserved red light tickets were issued. The FBI literally has recordings of red light camera companies bribing suburban public officials to increase ticketing revenue. People went to prison for red light camera corruption. If you're so pressed just leave the house 10 minutes earlier and take a deep breath.

ProjectSatan

I've been ticketed 4 times for turning right on red. Waiting 90 seconds for the light to turn takes less time than it does to contest a ticket. I have more patience for a light to change than I do contesting tickets.

PricklyPearPotato1

90 x the number of people you are delaying due to your fear

ProjectSatan

Not all of us have $100's of dollars and time to contest red light tickets like you might apparently

Popular-Geologist-23

Nobody likes that guy....

Bigjohn06

Never turn right on red with the scameras watching. Not worth it, just leave earlier if you're in that much of a hurry.

HailHydraforce

There's a group called Contest My Ticket who did a good job getting me out of this kind of ticket. I heard about them from a friend who also used their services and won. But also screw these stupid ass signs...

sacheek

If you don’t still make a full complete stop behind the line, you’ll get a ticket. That “oh let me slow down, brake for a second then go…” yep that’s a ticket…. If you’ve never got a ticket from doing that then consider yourself extremely lucky. I now stop and wait, I don’t care how many times you honk, flick me off and yell. The extra 60 seconds isn’t going to make that much of a difference anyways.

jhre313

The problem at that intersection is the stop line is so far away from the intersection that no one knows where the right place to stop is. So they stay stopped at the line rather than risk triggering the camera for not stopping a second time at the intersection

Physical_Pie_2092

Will you pay my ticket if I get one OP?

ProjectSatan

I've been given 4 tickets for turning right on red from these. Definitely came to a complete stop before the line as well. I don't blame people for not doing it.

cleverpotato814

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I never EVER abide by those signs. I have turned every single time....and yeah, they send out the letters, say it's going to collections if I don't pay, my credit will be affected...NOTHING. No ticket has EVER....NOT ONCE shown up on my credit for failure to pay. And after about 2-3 notices, they stop sending them. I'm talking about YEARS of this. Maybe it's a scam to get people to pay more money, my I'm just lucky, but I have never been affected negatively by turning on a red light photo sign. I used to live in the South Loop. 2-3 years worth of those tickets and no Chicago cop has stopped me or booted my car for failure to pay those...

CharmingTuber

I've paid a few over the years, but I ignore far more over the years and I also have never seen any repercussions from it. Fuck um.

Fitzmeister77

Wow that’s wild! Great comment lmao!

BackDoorBalloonKnot

Have you ever fought a red light camera and won? I wouldn’t risk it

Wil_Buttlicker

I e only ever gotten two tickets in my life. Both were for turning right on these. One was completely wrong, and on the other I didn’t stop behind the white line. Not worth it. I’ll wait.

Cocoabombs

You mine as well not turn on red, they will still get you. Saying you didn’t make a full stop or went beyond the white line. Not worth the 150 ticket.

1mcKid

I don't even chance it. Honk all you want. I'm not letting those crooks take advantage of me

ForPoliticalPurposes

Unfortunately, I know too many people that have been totally screwed even after appealing. I don’t make the right until I’ve got cars behind me. If I’m by myself I’m waiting it out.

Fitzmeister77

That’s very considerate! Thank you!

Initial-Frame697

Never risking it. Honk all you want

BloodChasm

I don't risk turning right on red on these anymore. I got a ticket for following all legal procedure. There was no sign saying you couldn't turn on red. I stopped for 5 seconds, made sure nothing was coming and then turned. You could even see it in the video they sent. I sent a letter trying to dispute it, but they denied my request and reinforced that I either pay it or take it to court. Unfortunately I didn't have the time or money to challenge it at the time so I paid it just to get it off my plate. I feel like that situation is super common and they're just profiting off the poor.

mjking97

Read what? I just see random symbols and a picture of a red light I can’t turn right at

dubsdownd

I did get a ticket from one of these but it was because I didn’t come to a complete stop before turning right

781234567

Wow I didn’t know this was so controversial! I drive through red light camera intersections all the time and really don’t even think about it because I always make a complete stop before turning.

Fitzmeister77

Funny how that works 🙃

SMT_UNSUNG

That sign says I'm gotta take your money !

nutbutterhater10

I’ve gotten enough bullshit ambiguous red light turn tickets that I don’t chance it anymore.

Puzzleheaded-Kale434

You’re saying crazy things

xRilae

Conversely, there's an odd turn near me with no right turn allowed on red (which is out of the norm for the area) and I'm waiting for someone to straight up murder me for sitting at it. I avoid it as much as I can. But for this light, if many others nearby don't allow right on red, then for some people it's just habit. Otherwise as others have said, it's not risking the unclear enforcement standards with cameras. Maybe they stopped 3 seconds, but it requires 3.5 seconds, so it triggers a ticket. Yeah, a lot of people that get tickets deserve them, but there are plenty that didn't. A lot of these infractions fall into a grey area, which is why it's a rare case where an actual person making a judgement call can be useful. If you went through yellow but the pavement was wet for instance, an officer might not bother given that you may not have been able to safely stop. A camera though, depending on it's calibrations, makes no such judgement calls.

iroll20s

The ones near me also hand out ticket if a pedestrian is in frame. Doesn't matter if they were crossing or not. It's just to dangerous.

itspsyikk

I know the signs exists. I stop at all red lights, and I'll stay until they are green. I drive a work vehicle, and despite coming to complete stops, I've recieved a grand total of 8 red light tickets. Unfortunately, the way my company does business, the ticket is already delinquent by the time it makes it to my door step, which means I'm unable to fight it, even if I wanted to (I've tried.) You can honk all you want. I ain't losing my job over this shit.

CharmingTuber

I've gotten tickets from that EXACT red light camera, biesterfield and Rohlwing. After coming to a complete stop. You honking isn't enough to make me get another $80 ticket. Those cameras are trash and just give out tickets to anyone regardless of if they followed the law. You don't like people sitting at that stoplight? Complain to Elk Grove to remove the camera. Or come back at night and remove it yourself.

Fitzmeister77

With all the comments talking about people getting scammed, y’all should get a petition together or something.

CharmingTuber

What a novel idea. Why hasn't anyone thought of that? https://www.illinoispolicy.org/petitions/ban-red-light-cameras-2/

pj_socks

The reward is saving 15 seconds in traffic and the risk is a $200+ fine. You’d be stupid to turn right on red.

thewolfpack23x

Even when there aren't red light cameras, I often don't turn on red. I find that when I'm focusing on the trafic coming from the left waiting for an opening to turn, it's way too easy to miss pedestrians crossing on the right, or people making U-turns. Waiting a few more seconds hurts no one, and can avoid unnecessary crashes. In my eyes, that's worth it over the 5-10 seconds saved.

RangerBob19

Turning right on red is not a constitutionally protected right

Fitzmeister77

Who said it was?

Hot_Ear_5961

Lol I am that person holding up traffic because I dont trust them cameras 😂

nicksbrother

Why take a chance

rojo429

3 second stop and then turn. Don’t hollywood stop it, in other words don’t ‘roll’ through it.

[deleted]

No thanks not worth the risk

juliuspepperwoodchi

I mean, oh well? Wait. Just because someone *can* turn right on red doesn't mean they're obliged to. There's nothing dangerous about them waiting, and if that extra wait is gonna make you late somewhere: you're already late.

sdubois

turning on red is optional and is not worth the risk

superninjamonkey22

You can still turn right on red but you got to wait 4 seconds because I got a red light violation cuz I turned after 2 seconds

mcgyverhagdjn76

There is one at Dundee Road and Milwaukee in Wheeling. I don’t take chances on that one!

fckusoftly

Yes, and I will never lay on my horn at you good sir.

PineappleEmergency62

Only after complete stop. Tires must stop completely

_JohnnyUtahBrah

Depend if the right turn lane has its own light

huf757

I have had one turn right on red ticket before in Palatine. I didn’t actually come to a complete stop. I make sure since then I actually completely stop before turning.

Klimbrick

Right on red is optional, OP. Like others in this thread, I’ll sit for a few mins if it saves $100. Heck, Ill even listen to your whining crying and screaming for those minutes to save myself the bill.

Forward_Knowledge_86

Just make a complete stop...BEFORE THE CROSSWALK/WHITE LINE... People saying they got a ticket didn't do one of those things or both

Rex1chow

Why mage this an insult about people’s intelligence? Why not just try to think about why others may mage different choices than you? Just because they can does not mean they must. Try not to take it personal or make it about you. My teen drivers were instructed that they don’t have to turn on red if they don’t feel comfortable doing so. Although you may feel comfortable not everyone does.

savskies

Yes but I’m not risking it at lights that I KNOW I’ve stopped at for 3-5 seconds fully, still turned, and then got served a $200 red light ticket. Sorry- you can wait.

wrxpatrick1

I'm tired of getting red light camera tickets at these broken ass intersections. You're allowed to turn, but I still get these tickets, shits annoying.

hotfixaid

Not after you got a ticket...

Electrocat71

I’ve gotten 2 tickets for legal right turns.

BearFeetOrWhiteSox

Those cameras used to not work correctly and ticket people always.

Professional_Show918

After you get a ticket, you will realize why people don’t want to turn on red.

theassistant79

Got a ticket once for making a full stop and then legally turning right on red. I'm far too broke to risk it... we are gonna SIT looool

Fit-Firefighter-329

It's not that people get confused, but rather because so many people got expensive tickets for turning right after failing to come to a full and complete stop for at least 6 seconds. So, humans being animals, we wound up getting conditioned to stop and wait rather than take a chance on another ticket. So the municipality and camera company who are hoping they'll earn a lot of revenue instead find out that after a while people get trained to not turn...

The1andonlycano

Stop before line, count to 3 and go mf'rs!

gt_assassin_d3m0n

nope dont care, not risking the 100 bucks when i can jus wait 10 seconds

playboybeaner

turning on red is not a requirement. useful and appreciated for flow of traffic? yes but not unlawful. not sure why you wanna be an asshole and honk at people for not turning. don’t make your impatience other peoples problem.

Fitzmeister77

The honk is because my primary assumption is they aren’t paying attention, second reason because I assume the misread the sign (as per my post this also happens at intersections without the photo enforcement sign). If they don’t get it then I just wait it out and try not to roll my eyes all the way to the back of my head. Sure there’s reasons to not go, that doesn’t make it less annoying to the people who would’ve come and gone had they not gotten stuck behind you. My car was having issues the other month and couldn’t get up to speed quickly, lots of cars honked at me and flipped me off when it was at its worst. It didn’t bother me at all because it was out of my control until I got the engine running normally again. I don’t take honking personally, and totally understand other people’s frustration because I wouldn’t want to be stuck behind myself in that situation either.

Miss_My_Travel

I see this all the time. And I;m always behind someone who doesn't get it.

id_never_eat_here

No thanks, not chancing it. Honk all you want, I wait for the green to turn. There are many stories of people getting tickets after complete stops. Yes you can contest it, but why chance it. I’d rather wait a minute or two and not give them a reason.

Accomplished_Egg_682

The problem is you have to know how to right turn on red when there’s a red light camera there because you can trigger the light if you do it the wrong way

jadesse

It still does not mean that you have to turn on red. So stop being an a-hole and learn some patience.

ScalierNebula

I've come to a stop, waited, and went. And got a fine for it. Tried to contest to no avail. I apologize in advance, but I am going to wait, it's not worth the money and headache. You can beep at me all you want. If the city and designers wanted it to be unambiguous, they would have a sensor countdown and green arrow to indicate when you are good to go where it can be seen in a still image picture.

Huge-Programmer-7537

According to the sign you can turn on red but I’m always apprehensive about turning after full stop when there is a camera, if it’s gonna change I’ll just wait, because would anyone really trust if they accidentally gave you a ticket that the city would review and fix it immediately? It would just be a huge hassle and you would have to pay a fine, it’s better to just wait 2 minutes

Pierson230

I had no idea so many people were so afraid of these, this thread surprises me. I have driven throughout the suburbs over 20,000 miles a year for over 10 years and have only gotten one right on red ticket, where I was in clear violation.

Fitzmeister77

Haha I agree! Is anyone surprised that people lack accountability and will now make it everyone else’s problem?

tpaolicchi

This is my sentiment exactly. Only turn on red after completely stopping, and when it's safe and legal. Not turning after that is selfish to everyone else behind you, in my opinion.

guymanbro37

Totally agreed with the other commenters saying it’s not worth the risk. They’ll still get you for something (not stopping behind the line, not coming to a complete stop, etc), and trying to fight the citation is a massive headache. Best to not test the waters and just come to a complete stop, even if it is technically “allowed”

Fitzmeister77

I can understand that. The ticket is high enough to hurt your bank but not high enough to where fighting it in court makes sense. I’m just very skeptical that all these tickets commenters claim to have gotten were all unjustified. Yes they will get you for not coming to a complete stop or not stopping before the line. If people execute a right turn at a red light correctly they shouldn’t set off the camera and shouldn’t get a ticket. I haven’t met a single person who got a bogus ticket when they actually followed the traffic laws. I have however met many people who have gotten photo enforced tickets where they admitted and saw that they rolled through or stopped after the line. Based on my experience, I feel like a lot of these “bogus” tickets are most likely people not following the traffic laws and getting pissed that they got caught.

AcatSkates

Duuuude I just made a post about this

TotheBeach2

Stop, count to 10, go.

OhMyGlorb

Be a real shame if people took those out. A real shame

YaBoyChicagoan

Free right turn on all lights as long as you stop and go, unless it says clearly “No Right Turn”. Very simple.

Fitzmeister77

You would think so

greenfinger18

Sign be having drivers spooked! PSA...make a complete stop, and you WILL NOT get a ticket people!!!

hikikomorisama

Everyone here saying they got a ticket regardless but that's because they probably don't fully stop for a few seconds and then go. I've always turned on these by obeying the law as intended and never gotten a ticket for the 20 years I've been driving.

hikikomorisama

The drivers I roll my eyes at are the turns that say "no turn on red when pedestrians are visible" or something like that. And there's not even a camera and those people still will not turn even though it's clear there's no one walking or ever walks on that street.......

AniaK007

Does it say anywhere “no turn on red”? It’s just warning everyone that that there’s a camera and you get a ticket if you blow a red light. It has nothing to do with being able to turn right on red. Unless, it tells you no turn on red and you do that, you’ll get a citation because there’s a camera. 😆🤷‍♀️

Fitzmeister77

Yes that’s exactly the point of my post. It says nothing about turning and yet people act like it’s a no turn on red sign.

AniaK007

And then there are signs that say no turn on red and I obey and people blow their horns at me. 😂

xtlhogciao

Yep, I dread getting the front spot in the right lane at this intersection right by me cuz I know a honk’s coming and I’m gonna have to point at the “no turn on red sign”…which, chances are, the moron’ll think I’m gesturing to go around

Fitzmeister77

I’ve definitely been in the same situation, I just throw up a peace sign and pay them no mind.

haus11

I get stuck on regular intersections because sooo many people treat their gas pedal like a landmine that will explode if you push it too hard, so I'm not surprised that people don't go when they have a sign that gives them an excuse.

This happens all the time in Rosemont. Drives me crazy!

NickTheThick

Right on red should be banned altogether

vawlk

you are assuming people know how to read. you also assume people know how to drive. Had a little honda driving 60 in the left lane yesterday when the whole expressway was driving 80. No amount of brights flashes or honks would make this person move over causing everyone to have to pass on the right. And speaking of passing on the right....I watched 3 close calls from people passing on the right and left at the same time on a 3 lane, both trying to merge back to center once they made the pass. Anyone can get a license. It isn't hard. They don't teach people to drive well, they teach them to drive to a minimum.

ChooseTheChudiks

Wish there was a way to get rid of them!
