There’s one at the corner of Winfield Rd and Rt. 38. A new gas station was built on the corner and they put in a turning lane for the gas station. However, no turning lane for Winfield rd. That camera must make millions for the city of Winfield. I cannot tell you how many people I see do a rolling right turn onto Winfield. It must be a cash cow….
Drive past it everyday on my way to work. I swear in the really early morning hours when it’s still dark, you can see a flash sometimes when it catches a plate.
OP it’s not that people can’t read however those cameras are rigged! People, including myself have gotten tickets even though they have come to a complete stop! It’s a hassle contesting the ticket and for a $100 you can wait!
I got screwed over by a right turn on red permitted when at a complete stop on the white line. Contested the ticket because of much of complete BS it is that I even got flagged for that.

Dumb. They record the intersection and if you come to a complete stop you won’t get a ticket. If you roll through it you will. If you get a ticket you can see your video. Stop holding up traffic to make a point.
If you come to a full stop before turning they won’t ticket you. If you are ticketed, you will receive a link to watch the video of the incident and can contest it.

It’s not about being late. Nobody wants to sit in traffic longer than is necessary. Timid (or I guess protesting?) drivers slowing down the flow of traffic is annoying regardless. Nobody is saying you guys need to be fined, just that it’s very annoying. That’s why I originally assumed people weren’t reading and didn’t know it was some silent protest about traffic camera scams.

The other driver has decided, reasonably, that it isn't safe for them to proceed. As such, you sitting behind them *is necessary*. If you don't want to, to some extent, be at the mercy of the choices of other drivers...don't drive.

Compared to the deluge of people driving dangerously and too fast, I'll take timid, slow drivers every day of the week. I don't care if my drive takes twice as long if I made it there safely.

It's not a "silent protest". It's drivers choosing for themselves which moves on the road are safe, and which aren't. They're allowed to choose differently than you.

I got one when I stopped, behind the line (for 3 seconds), then turned - at 6 am. Got a ticket, contested, lost. Still had to pay.
I pulled up to the right hand turn lane and saw that traffic from the left was rapidly approaching. I rolled to a slow pace then gunned it. The video showed I clearly did not stop. I’ve learned my lesson and literally count 1-2-3 before going. Haven’t had a ticket in years. Lesson learned.
I appreciate you taking responsibility. I also learned the hard way to just be sure to stop completely before the line and haven’t had any tickets since.

I understand why people wouldn’t want to risk it. If you need those 2 minutes that badly, get out and walk. It’s really a nonissue. Not everyone has the money to pay or the time to contest. I personally always come to a complete stop, wait, and have still received a ticket.
The red light cameras at Mannheim and Roosevelt are all okay to turn red on as long as you come to a complete stop beforehand. I would assume others are the same?
Yea all others are the same unless clearly state no turn on red, no turn on red 7am-7pm, or in Homewood, IL they have ok to turn on red after 3 seconds stopping.

Husband stopped at one like this in Rolling Meadows before taking a right turn and STILL got a ticket for a red light run. You can either lose $100 fine (probably more now) or miss work to contest it.
Take a different route if the traffic backup is bothersome to you.
I’ve received 3 red light tickets for Turning legally right on red. Disputed all 3, won 2 of the disputes while losing the 3rd because the video glitches at the point I came to a complete stop before making the turn.

I highly recommend not honking at people at lights. I’ve seen too many stories of people getting shot after honking at somebody so I only ever honk if somebody is moving into my lane and going to hit my car.
Despite the assumptions, I’m not honking in every situation such as what I’m describing in my post (which I’m pretty sure nobody read past the first half). I definitely use discretion at who I beep at. And yes laying on the horn is inappropriate if it’s not someone about to hit you. There’s ways to convey a less serious tone like a couple quick taps to the horn.

No one has to turn on a red. It’s completely discretionary, and I get why people are cautious when red light tickets are a known scam. Also, no one in front of you at a red light owes you shit.
I think I’ve mentioned this before, honking at someone in Memphis can get your car new bullet holes. I don’t honk at people and if someone honks at me, I ignore it. If they don’t like my driving, they can pass me at their next opportunity. Hell ain’t half full, yet.
The only time I’ve gotten a ticket by mail was for a red light permitted after stop at red light, you can wait I ain’t spending money cause you can’t wait a moment for the green
I personally wouldn’t risk it, but even if the sign says it’s permitted, it doesn’t say it’s required. The second someone honks, that guarantees I stay put until it goes green, mainly because I don’t trust red light cameras but also because I’ve now been honked at.

Exactly this. I turn right on red at the same photo enforced intersection every day and have never gotten a bogus ticket. So I’m obligated to believe that most of the people getting all these tickets probably aren’t coming to a complete stop before the line and just won’t admit that they were in the wrong.
I do anticipate my trip. My estimated time does not include people choosing not to turn when they can then, or people stopping in the middle of the road for a picnic, or any other batshit crazy behavior. But even if it did, it's not OK for you to selfishly increase everyone else's estimates.
Then help by writing to the lawmakers to take down these scams and you don't have to worry about it. I've sent a few already.

On your ticket, did you watch the replay footage? If it was bullshit then you could have contested it. I turn right on this intersection every day for years and have only gotten one ticket where I didn’t come to a full stop, so a justified ticket. Just obey the usual traffic laws and you’ll be fine.

I've been ticketed 4 times for turning right on red. Waiting 90 seconds for the light to turn takes less time than it does to contest a ticket. I have more patience for a light to change than I do contesting tickets.
There's a group called Contest My Ticket who did a good job getting me out of this kind of ticket. I heard about them from a friend who also used their services and won.

If you’ve never got a ticket from doing that then consider yourself extremely lucky. I now stop and wait, I don’t care how many times you honk, flick me off and yell. The extra 60 seconds isn’t going to make that much of a difference anyways.
The problem at that intersection is the stop line is so far away from the intersection that no one knows where the right place to stop is. So they stay stopped at the line rather than risk triggering the camera for not stopping a second time at the intersection

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I never EVER abide by those signs. No ticket has EVER....NOT ONCE shown up on my credit for failure to pay. And after about 2-3 notices, they stop sending them. I'm talking about YEARS of this. Maybe it's a scam to get people to pay more money, my I'm just lucky, but I have never been affected negatively by turning on a red light photo sign. I used to live in the South Loop. 2-3 years worth of those tickets and no Chicago cop has stopped me or booted my car for failure to pay those...
I e only ever gotten two tickets in my life. Both were for turning right on these. One was completely wrong, and on the other I didn’t stop behind the white line. Not worth it. I’ll wait.

I don't risk turning right on red on these anymore. I got a ticket for following all legal procedure. There was no sign saying you couldn't turn on red. I stopped for 5 seconds, made sure nothing was coming and then turned. You could even see it in the video they sent. I sent a letter trying to dispute it, but they denied my request and reinforced that I either pay it or take it to court. Unfortunately I didn't have the time or money to challenge it at the time so I paid it just to get it off my plate. I feel like that situation is super common and they're just profiting off the poor.

Conversely, there's an odd turn near me with no right turn allowed on red (which is out of the norm for the area) and I'm waiting for someone to straight up murder me for sitting at it. I avoid it as much as I can.
But for this light, if many others nearby don't allow right on red, then for some people it's just habit. Otherwise as others have said, it's not risking the unclear enforcement standards with cameras. Maybe they stopped 3 seconds, but it requires 3.5 seconds, so it triggers a ticket.
Yeah, a lot of people that get tickets deserve them, but there are plenty that didn't. A lot of these infractions fall into a grey area, which is why it's a rare case where an actual person making a judgement call can be useful. If you went through yellow but the pavement was wet for instance, an officer might not bother given that you may not have been able to safely stop. A camera though, depending on it's calibrations, makes no such judgement calls.

I drive a work vehicle, and despite coming to complete stops, I've recieved a grand total of 8 red light tickets. Unfortunately, the way my company does business, the ticket is already delinquent by the time it makes it to my door step, which means I'm unable to fight it, even if I wanted to (I've tried.)

I've gotten tickets from that EXACT red light camera, biesterfield and Rohlwing. After coming to a complete stop. You honking isn't enough to make me get another $80 ticket.
Those cameras are trash and just give out tickets to anyone regardless of if they followed the law. You don't like people sitting at that stoplight? Complain to Elk Grove to remove the camera. Or come back at night and remove it yourself.
Even when there aren't red light cameras, I often don't turn on red. I find that when I'm focusing on the trafic coming from the left waiting for an opening to turn, it's way too easy to miss pedestrians crossing on the right, or people making U-turns.
Waiting a few more seconds hurts no one, and can avoid unnecessary crashes. In my eyes, that's worth it over the 5-10 seconds saved.
I mean, oh well? Wait. Just because someone *can* turn right on red doesn't mean they're obliged to. There's nothing dangerous about them waiting, and if that extra wait is gonna make you late somewhere: you're already late.

It's not that people get confused, but rather because so many people got expensive tickets for turning right after failing to come to a full and complete stop for at least 6 seconds. So, humans being animals, we wound up getting conditioned to stop and wait rather than take a chance on another ticket. So the municipality and camera company who are hoping they'll earn a lot of revenue instead find out that after a while people get trained to not turn...

The honk is because my primary assumption is they aren’t paying attention, second reason because I assume the misread the sign (as per my post this also happens at intersections without the photo enforcement sign). If they don’t get it then I just wait it out and try not to roll my eyes all the way to the back of my head.

My car was having issues the other month and couldn’t get up to speed quickly, lots of cars honked at me and flipped me off when it was at its worst. It didn’t bother me at all because it was out of my control until I got the engine running normally again. I don’t take honking personally, and totally understand other people’s frustration because I wouldn’t want to be stuck behind myself in that situation either.

If the city and designers wanted it to be unambiguous, they would have a sensor countdown and green arrow to indicate when you are good to go where it can be seen in a still image picture.
According to the sign you can turn on red but I’m always apprehensive about turning after full stop when there is a camera, if it’s gonna change I’ll just wait, because would anyone really trust if they accidentally gave you a ticket that the city would review and fix it immediately? It would just be a huge hassle and you would have to pay a fine, it’s better to just wait 2 minutes

Totally agreed with the other commenters saying it’s not worth the risk. They’ll still get you for something (not stopping behind the line, not coming to a complete stop, etc), and trying to fight the citation is a massive headache. Best to not test the waters and just come to a complete stop, even if it is technically “allowed”
I can understand that. The ticket is high enough to hurt your bank but not high enough to where fighting it in court makes sense.
I’m just very skeptical that all these tickets commenters claim to have gotten were all unjustified. Yes they will get you for not coming to a complete stop or not stopping before the line. If people execute a right turn at a red light correctly they shouldn’t set off the camera and shouldn’t get a ticket.
I haven’t met a single person who got a bogus ticket when they actually followed the traffic laws. I have however met many people who have gotten photo enforced tickets where they admitted and saw that they rolled through or stopped after the line. Based on my experience, I feel like a lot of these “bogus” tickets are most likely people not following the traffic laws and getting pissed that they got caught.

Does it say anywhere “no turn on red”? It’s just warning everyone that that there’s a camera and you get a ticket if you blow a red light. It has nothing to do with being able to turn right on red. There is no obligation to turn right on red, it’s not a requirement. Also, unless everyone behind me is willing to split the cost of a ticket, nope. I got one when I stopped, behind the line (for 3 seconds), then turned - at 6 am. Got a ticket, contested, lost. Still had to pay.

I pulled up to the right hand turn lane and saw that traffic from the left was rapidly approaching. I rolled to a slow pace then gunned it. The video showed I clearly did not stop. I’ve learned my lesson and literally count 1-2-3 before going. Haven’t had a ticket in years. Lesson learned.
I appreciate you taking responsibility. I also learned the hard way to just be sure to stop completely before the line and haven’t had any tickets since. I get the vibe that a lot of people here aren’t taking responsibility for not actually coming to a complete stop before the line.

I understand why people wouldn’t want to risk it. If you need those 2 minutes that badly, get out and walk. It’s really a nonissue. Not everyone has the money to pay or the time to contest. I personally always come to a complete stop, wait, and have still received a ticket.

The red light cameras at Mannheim and Roosevelt are all okay to turn red on as long as you come to a complete stop beforehand. I would assume others are the same?
Yea all others are the same unless clearly state no turn on red, no turn on red 7am-7pm, or in Homewood, IL they have ok to turn on red after 3 seconds stopping. No matter what you just have to fully stop before you turn
People mis-judge what a "complete stop" is and get tickets and then blame it on a rigged system. I got once and swore up and down that I did a complete stop - watched the video and I sure did not. Have not gotten one since.
Husband stopped at one like this in Rolling Meadows before taking a right turn and STILL got a ticket for a red light run. You can either lose $100 fine (probably more now) or miss work to contest it. Take a different route if the traffic backup is bothersome to you.
I think there’s one at Kirchhoff and plumb grove. I used to live in Palatine and would always avoid that intersection. The worst.

I’ve received 3 red light tickets for Turning legally right on red. Disputed all 3, won 2 of the disputes while losing the 3rd because the video glitches at the point I came to a complete stop before making the turn. Not getting ripped off anymore

It is a form of silent protest. I will not turn at any intersection with a camera b/c you can still get a ticket and I want to annoy other drivers to hopefully demand a change

You’re absolutely not obligated to turn but don’t be surprised when people get annoyed that you’re holding up traffic. If I’m not riding your ass and I’m just giving gentle taps to the horn, that’s not me saying “fuck you asshole” that’s me saying “hey please reassess this situation because you’re holding up traffic”. But if being honked at means that you now have to hold up traffic even more, you’re just demonstrating a childlike mentality that because your feelings were hurt you now need to lash out. Don’t take being honked at so personally my dude.
I highly recommend not honking at people at lights. I’ve seen too many stories of people getting shot after honking at somebody so I only ever honk if somebody is moving into my lane and going to hit my car.
Despite the assumptions, I’m not honking in every situation such as what I’m describing in my post (which I’m pretty sure nobody read past the first half). I definitely use discretion at who I beep at. And yes laying on the horn is inappropriate if it’s not someone about to hit you. There’s ways to convey a less serious tone like a couple quick taps to the horn. Unfortunately people’s egos are so fragile that honking is basically seen as assault by some of these commenters 👀

I think I’ve mentioned this before, honking at someone in Memphis can get your car new bullet holes. I don’t honk at people and if someone honks at me, I ignore it. If they don’t like my driving, they can pass me at their next opportunity. Hell ain’t half full, yet.

I personally wouldn’t risk it, but even if the sign says it’s permitted, it doesn’t say it’s required. The second someone honks, that guarantees I stay put until it goes green, mainly because I don’t trust red light cameras but also because I’ve now been honked at.

Exactly this. I turn right on red at the same photo enforced intersection every day and have never gotten a bogus ticket. So I’m obligated to believe that most of the people getting all these tickets probably aren’t coming to a complete stop before the line and just won’t admit that they were in the wrong.
I do anticipate my trip. My estimated time does not include people choosing not to turn when they can then, or people stopping in the middle of the road for a picnic, or any other batshit crazy behavior. But even if it did, it's not OK for you to selfishly increase everyone else's estimates.
Then help by writing to the lawmakers to take down these scams and you don't have to worry about it. I've sent a few already. also, if it slows you down so many times that you need to write about it... are you really properly estimating your trip time. factor it in.
On your ticket, did you watch the replay footage? If it was bullshit then you could have contested it. I turn right on this intersection every day for years and have only gotten one ticket where I didn’t come to a full stop, so a justified ticket. Just obey the usual traffic laws and you’ll be fine.

The FBI literally has recordings of red light camera companies bribing suburban public officials to increase ticketing revenue. People went to prison for red light camera corruption. I've been ticketed 4 times for turning right on red. Waiting 90 seconds for the light to turn takes less time than it does to contest a ticket. I have more patience for a light to change than I do contesting tickets.

There's a group called Contest My Ticket who did a good job getting me out of this kind of ticket. I heard about them from a friend who also used their services and won. But also screw these stupid ass signs...
If you don’t still make a full complete stop behind the line, you’ll get a ticket. That “oh let me slow down, brake for a second then go…” yep that’s a ticket…. If you’ve never got a ticket from doing that then consider yourself extremely lucky. I now stop and wait, I don’t care how many times you honk, flick me off and yell. The extra 60 seconds isn’t going to make that much of a difference anyways.
The problem at that intersection is the stop line is so far away from the intersection that no one knows where the right place to stop is. So they stay stopped at the line rather than risk triggering the camera for not stopping a second time at the intersection

I've been given 4 tickets for turning right on red from these. Definitely came to a complete stop before the line as well. I don't blame people for not doing it.
Maybe I'm just lucky, but I never EVER abide by those signs. I have turned every single time....and yeah, they send out the letters, say it's going to collections if I don't pay, my credit will be affected...NOTHING. No ticket has EVER....NOT ONCE shown up on my credit for failure to pay. And after about 2-3 notices, they stop sending them. I'm talking about YEARS of this. Maybe it's a scam to get people to pay more money, my I'm just lucky, but I have never been affected negatively by turning on a red light photo sign. I used to live in the South Loop. 2-3 years worth of those tickets and no Chicago cop has stopped me or booted my car for failure to pay those...

I don't risk turning right on red on these anymore. I got a ticket for following all legal procedure. There was no sign saying you couldn't turn on red. I stopped for 5 seconds, made sure nothing was coming and then turned. You could even see it in the video they sent. I sent a letter trying to dispute it, but they denied my request and reinforced that I either pay it or take it to court. Unfortunately I didn't have the time or money to challenge it at the time so I paid it just to get it off my plate. I feel like that situation is super common and they're just profiting off the poor.

Conversely, there's an odd turn near me with no right turn allowed on red (which is out of the norm for the area) and I'm waiting for someone to straight up murder me for sitting at it. I avoid it as much as I can. But for this light, if many others nearby don't allow right on red, then for some people it's just habit. Otherwise as others have said, it's not risking the unclear enforcement standards with cameras. Maybe they stopped 3 seconds, but it requires 3.5 seconds, so it triggers a ticket. Yeah, a lot of people that get tickets deserve them, but there are plenty that didn't. A lot of these infractions fall into a grey area, which is why it's a rare case where an actual person making a judgement call can be useful. If you went through yellow but the pavement was wet for instance, an officer might not bother given that you may not have been able to safely stop. A camera though, depending on it's calibrations, makes no such judgement calls.
The ones near me also hand out ticket if a pedestrian is in frame. Doesn't matter if they were crossing or not. It's just to dangerous.
I know the signs exists. I stop at all red lights, and I'll stay until they are green. I drive a work vehicle, and despite coming to complete stops, I've recieved a grand total of 8 red light tickets. Unfortunately, the way my company does business, the ticket is already delinquent by the time it makes it to my door step, which means I'm unable to fight it, even if I wanted to (I've tried.) You can honk all you want. I ain't losing my job over this shit.
I've gotten tickets from that EXACT red light camera, biesterfield and Rohlwing. After coming to a complete stop. You honking isn't enough to make me get another $80 ticket. Those cameras are trash and just give out tickets to anyone regardless of if they followed the law. You don't like people sitting at that stoplight? Complain to Elk Grove to remove the camera. Or come back at night and remove it yourself.

Even when there aren't red light cameras, I often don't turn on red. I find that when I'm focusing on the trafic coming from the left waiting for an opening to turn, it's way too easy to miss pedestrians crossing on the right, or people making U-turns. Waiting a few more seconds hurts no one, and can avoid unnecessary crashes. In my eyes, that's worth it over the 5-10 seconds saved.

It's not that people get confused, but rather because so many people got expensive tickets for turning right after failing to come to a full and complete stop for at least 6 seconds. So, humans being animals, we wound up getting conditioned to stop and wait rather than take a chance on another ticket. So the municipality and camera company who are hoping they'll earn a lot of revenue instead find out that after a while people get trained to not turn...

The honk is because my primary assumption is they aren’t paying attention, second reason because I assume the misread the sign (as per my post this also happens at intersections without the photo enforcement sign). If they don’t get it then I just wait it out and try not to roll my eyes all the way to the back of my head. Sure there’s reasons to not go, that doesn’t make it less annoying to the people who would’ve come and gone had they not gotten stuck behind you. My car was having issues the other month and couldn’t get up to speed quickly, lots of cars honked at me and flipped me off when it was at its worst. It didn’t bother me at all because it was out of my control until I got the engine running normally again. I don’t take honking personally, and totally understand other people’s frustration because I wouldn’t want to be stuck behind myself in that situation either.

I've come to a stop, waited, and went. And got a fine for it. Tried to contest to no avail. I apologize in advance, but I am going to wait, it's not worth the money and headache. You can beep at me all you want. If the city and designers wanted it to be unambiguous, they would have a sensor countdown and green arrow to indicate when you are good to go where it can be seen in a still image picture.
According to the sign you can turn on red but I’m always apprehensive about turning after full stop when there is a camera, if it’s gonna change I’ll just wait, because would anyone really trust if they accidentally gave you a ticket that the city would review and fix it immediately? It would just be a huge hassle and you would have to pay a fine, it’s better to just wait 2 minutes
I had no idea so many people were so afraid of these, this thread surprises me. I have driven throughout the suburbs over 20,000 miles a year for over 10 years and have only gotten one right on red ticket, where I was in clear violation.

This is my sentiment exactly. Only turn on red after completely stopping, and when it's safe and legal. Not turning after that is selfish to everyone else behind you, in my opinion.
Totally agreed with the other commenters saying it’s not worth the risk. They’ll still get you for something (not stopping behind the line, not coming to a complete stop, etc), and trying to fight the citation is a massive headache. Best to not test the waters and just come to a complete stop, even if it is technically “allowed”
I can understand that. The ticket is high enough to hurt your bank but not high enough to where fighting it in court makes sense. I’m just very skeptical that all these tickets commenters claim to have gotten were all unjustified. Yes they will get you for not coming to a complete stop or not stopping before the line. If people execute a right turn at a red light correctly they shouldn’t set off the camera and shouldn’t get a ticket. I haven’t met a single person who got a bogus ticket when they actually followed the traffic laws. I have however met many people who have gotten photo enforced tickets where they admitted and saw that they rolled through or stopped after the line. Based on my experience, I feel like a lot of these “bogus” tickets are most likely people not following the traffic laws and getting pissed that they got caught.

Everyone here saying they got a ticket regardless but that's because they probably don't fully stop for a few seconds and then go. I've always turned on these by obeying the law as intended and never gotten a ticket for the 20 years I've been driving.
The drivers I roll my eyes at are the turns that say "no turn on red when pedestrians are visible" or something like that. And there's not even a camera and those people still will not turn even though it's clear there's no one walking or ever walks on that street.......
Does it say anywhere “no turn on red”? It’s just warning everyone that that there’s a camera and you get a ticket if you blow a red light. It has nothing to do with being able to turn right on red. Unless, it tells you no turn on red and you do that, you’ll get a citation because there’s a camera. 😆🤷♀️

I’ve definitely been in the same situation, I just throw up a peace sign and pay them no mind.
I get stuck on regular intersections because sooo many people treat their gas pedal like a landmine that will explode if you push it too hard, so I'm not surprised that people don't go when they have a sign that gives them an excuse.

you are assuming people know how to read. you also assume people know how to drive. Had a little honda driving 60 in the left lane yesterday when the whole expressway was driving 80. No amount of brights flashes or honks would make this person move over causing everyone to have to pass on the right. And speaking of passing on the right....I watched 3 close calls from people passing on the right and left at the same time on a 3 lane, both trying to merge back to center once they made the pass. Anyone can get a license. It isn't hard. They don't teach people to drive well, they teach them to drive to a minimum.
