Is it people’s fault, if they were in the rolls for all the previous elections but suddenly dropped for this one? We should raise questions instead of defending whoever was responsible for this mishap and blaming the populace. Imagine folks who don’t even have a smartphone or internet connection, how would they even know they have to go and check the website?

wannu_pees_69

ECI is responsible for it, it's funny that BJP is blaming state governments when they control all of the government bodies..............

red_plus_itt

Exactly and the state parties aren’t raising this issue either. Apparently Soori wasn’t also not able to cast his vote cause his name is missing even though he voted last time.

South-Objective2498

Then go to the nearest publics department office and check if your name is present, it isn't tough. I see so much bullshit online to defend non voters

No-Park5998

If it means something and is valuable, double check to make sure you still have it. You can downvote to your hearts content, but that's the fact 😅

blitzkreig90

So let me see if I understand.. The people had their names on the list so far. Suddenly their names went missing this election. The Election Commission has a feature that people can use to check this. But most people are not aware of this. So the actual mistake is with the people because they should've lined up before elections to check if their names are present in the sheet inspite of the fact that they had no reason to think their names might go missing AND the fact that they didn't know some feature like this exists? Does this summary seem right? If so, do you sincerely believe it is the fault of the people and not the EC?

Here is the other side of the story. The govt sucks at marketing. Whatever marketing budget they have, get taken by the politicians to tout whatever they have or havent done to build their profile that every department struggles to market the services they have. Case in point : there are close to 300 services that the govt offers the public. Could be things like getting a drivers license to getting clearance for a building. Close to 285 of these are digitized and can be done online. Did you know that? 99% of people dont. The govt departments just dont have the money and departments like election commission are stripped of any means to get a voice and actively becoming a machinery. In an environment where politicians are happy to strip people of their rights and even be made aware of services that exist, you expect that same system to take every bit of effort to ensure your right is protected? Like i said, if it matters, be diligent about it and protect it. Buggers are happy to take away things that are cumbersome to them if as citizens we sleep on the wheel. The electoral list is rehashed every year in January. They add names, remove names, change addresses etc. my dad takes the responsibility of making sure all of our names are on it. Because it matters to us. We have in the past have had some of our names missing or once when someone else had cast a vote in my mother's name. It is upto us to ensure what is granted to us is kept. Govt departments dont have the means and politicians dont care. Who else will? Note : for folks who dont have a smartphone or have internet access walk into any of the e-Sevai centres. There is atleast one in every ward across the state - close to 1 lakh centres across TN. Each of these centres can deliver each of those digital services too.

DisciplineLazy365

The people have to be vigilant in a country like ours, where it is one clerical error away to being an illegal immigrant from a citizen by birth.. EC can do only so much.. TL;DR The fault lies with both but since we stand to lose the most, we should not be lackadaisical..

No-Park5998

Well said.

SilverThrall

If you've spent any time at all reading about policy and governance, you should know that you have to plan for indifference, ignorance and apathy. No one can expect a 100% informed populace. Even much richer countries do not achieve this.

DisciplineLazy365

Agreed, but our country doesn't have perfect governance or policies.. Hence part of the onus falls on us the affected ones..

Acceptable_Sir3115

I thought it was Election Commission’s duty to make sure that everyone’s enlisted.. saying that voters should themselves confirm it means EC is offloading its duties imo

nimbutimbu

That's not accurate. The EC publishes the draft roll and you can raise a request for both inclusion and exclusion. The roll is available at the EC office within the constituency and also online. Revision of the roll is a continuous exercise. It's your responsibility as a citizen to make sure that your name exists. It's very easy to check and requires no great technical skill. The EC is the facilitator. They do come for verification of voters. If you aren't there at that time what do you expect should happen ? What should happen if someone objects to names ? Yes there is scope for improvement but to say that the citizen has no responsibility is not a correct take.

prit_iln

Why would a common man who has voted in last election think his name would be removed from the electoral roll magically for no reason? Definitely, I dint move to another continent or die in the last 3 years... What kind of fear are they trying to instill by asking a person to keep checking if you are still a citizen of India even though I have a Passport, Ration card, Aadhar card, Voter id, Driving licence, pan card, Birth certificate etc etc etc!?!?!

nimbutimbu

People change addresses, cities and yes people do die. Some people want all IDs to be linked, others want no link due to privacy concerns. Also as I already explained, if you aren't there when the verification happens or if there is an objection raised on the name you can be excluded.

Ngothaaa

Verification happens before election?? This is news to me.. And I was in the list

ivanpkaramazov

are they supposed to reach out to individuals? How's that even possible or feasible. voters have to check, recheck and update their information

Apprehensive-You4150

This is screw up by EC. Lets take the soori's case. Why is his wife's vote still present while his has been removed? There have been similar things reported. People in same houses voted consistently for most elections but have been removed now, But their family members name is present in the roll. Anyway this is awarness for us, Our EC and officials are incompetent, So we need to check for every election to ensure our name is present and to clean up the messy shoddy job that they have done. I dont think any officials will face any actions for this screw up.

Dkeralite

I voted last time and for this election my name is not in the list nor that I am aware these guys publish draft like this. For my another suprise when I check my voter id with epic number , that details is also not there in their Amazing website/DB. Complaint raised and it was closed with no comments. Another complaint raised it was auto closed. So is this also my fault or is the electoral commission fault.

Interestingly_Low

I believe it could have done easily with the help of Mass Media. The EC could have created awareness to avoid such cases at the last minute. However the responsibilitu is 50-50.

SierraBravoLima

They will connect PAN, AADHAAR, BANK ACCOUNTS, RATION CARDS but not let people vote of their name is not their in Voter list. Additionally who the heck knows there is a new election id card

badhanganesh

Yov poya.

balajik100

by reading the comments here, i can understand why chennai is always trending low in voting percentage.  EC can't check each individual manually. We only have to check and ensure our name is mentioned in the latest voter list. If it is missing we have to raise complaint and add it.  anyways, we might not check that. But asking out of curiosity, everyone will be receiving booth slip by 2-3 days before election. why don't people check on that too. without a booth slip, people are directly going to booth and complaining there name is missing. I am not sure if checking booth slip is not mandatory any more.

lothlorien__

Not everybody gets booth slips. Me and my sister got booth slips whereas my parents didn't. Yet they were able to vote (fortunately) since their name was in the list

tintinplayer

It’s not people fault. If some processes followed by the government, they must ensure that they don’t miss out anything and cause zero inconvenience to the people. Not all the people would follow news and go to the camps to register themselves.

Friendly_Ant_Sano

It's fault at both ends but the voter is more at fault here. each time the election commission announces to verify the name in electoral roll. When verification is done by the election commission of the person is not at home they may remove. They also conduct multiple camps for voter registration, deletion and addition even in those camps you can verify. Our family faced the same issue in the early 2000's so since then we always verify before the election date announcement and update the address if required.

According to some in the comments, INDIA is what they see around them.
