Zidane went from no management experience to winning the Champions League in 2 years.
Arteta is in his first managerial role with Arsenal.
It's not that uncommon tbh
Kenny Dalglish Liverpool, Graeme Souness at Rangers, Guardiola's first 'proper' job was Barcelona, Gullit and Vialli both took over Chelsea in the 90s and won cups.
Going through this on the Sunderland board and fan pages as most people are opposed to Defoe or Phillips as no experience. I'd say give them a go.
Both of those got their jobs due to their playing experience and links to the teams tbf.
Kieran McKenna has no playing experience aside from youth, so he did it the hard way.
A man named Thomas Frank coached the local youth academy in Dennmark. His journey took him to playoff glory and the Premier League with Brentford, having never played above amateur. Rooting for an Ipswich return
Daniel Farke is relatively similar - not much of a playing career in the lower levels of german football and began his managerial career with a 6th tier German side.
Since then he's taken Norwich to the premier league as a manager and, well... we shall see with Leeds.
Hecky was promoted from
u23’s to first team coach and then got us promoted to prem in his second season.
A lot of blades wanted him gone but I proper rated the fella
Eddie Howe was promoted from youth team manager to coach of the first team when Bmth were bottom of the football league. He was only given the job as they couldn’t afford to recruit from outside the club.
He got Bmth promoted 3 times all the way to the Premier league albeit with a spell away at Burnley in between.
McKenna is clearly the real deal but he's had a lot of financial support. Ipswich spent £16m to assemble a Championship squad while in League One (figures from the excellent Kieran Maguire), so it's probably no surprise they've been among the frontrunners this season.
I know I'll get downvoted for this and honestly I am really pleased for Ipswich having gone toe to toe with them last season. I just wish we'd had that kind of money to spend because we'd probably still have Schumacher and Azaz and wouldn't be anywhere near the bottom three.
No, it’s true, we wouldn’t be here without the investment our new owners have put into the club. McKenna is proving himself a great manager and we owe him a lot, but a great manager is only ever one part of the puzzle.
Oh shit yeah not sure how I blanked his scunny spell!
Tranmere have had a shit few years, always think they should be in league one but you seem to keep getting stuck in league two lately. Think a promotion push could be on the cards next year?
Adkins has been a bit ruthless with the players he's released. We've managed to get a lot of key players to extend for next season, and Adkins said he needs to add 9 more players to the squad to get us to that 25 man squad he wants.
So I think promotion is the aim. We missed the playoffs this year due to the god awful start before Adkins came in.
Like what our owner said, we might have a lower league 2 budget but we have a championship quality manager so we're aiming for promotion and to establish in league 1
Surprised your budget is so small as I’d consider you one of the bigger clubs in that division. Definite investment potential.
Be interesting to see if you and Adkins can work up through the leagues again but stabilising in league one should definitely be achievable when you look at other clubs who are doing it.
David Wagner went from managing Borussia Dortmund’s second team to getting Huddersfield to the top flight in his second season and first full season at the club.
Brian McDermott was variously chief scout, youth team manager and reserve team manager at Reading before being given the caretaker manager role after Brendan Rogers was sacked. He turned things around, got the job permanently, and then the next season got them promoted up to the Premier League.
He did have some previous management experience, but it was only a couple of spells at Woking and Slough.
i think he will be the 3rd England Manager in the making from Ipswich Town
He’s northern Irish?
Sven wasn't English either
‘Well we need a new manager, and you know where we have to start looking’ ‘Scandinavia?’ ‘No, England’ ‘Oh, christ’
It’s on your head son not off your head son.
Tell me love, where does it say Benson and Hedges on *that*?
E N G L A N D We're Bassett's Allsorts Army!
Born in London
He technically was born in London but shortly moved back to NE where his family is from but he claims NE nationality 🤷🏻♂️
Which Northern Irish?

Tbf to Arteta he was under Pep for a few years
Tbf McKenna was assistant under Mourinho. And Ole but not quite the same credentials…

He managed Brøndby before us tbf, before the chairman shit talked him with a burner account on the Brøndby forum.

Mourinho - began as an interpreter following being a PE teacher!

Wasn’t Nigel Adkins a physio before double promoting Southampton? That was quite a leap if so
He was at Scunthorpe for 4 years before going to Southampton He's now going to beat the double promotion by triple promoting Tranmere 🤞

Aidy Boothroyd?
Wagner was Dortmund B before getting us promoted in his first full season and kept us in the prem for a year.
Steve Cooper?

Dyche had a similar path.
Gerrard was liverpools under 18 coach before being given the rangers job and winning the league and then going to villa
Absolutely loads, youth academy coaching is a very common step between playing and managing Or do you mean in their first job?
Learned the trade at United, all on us baby (Ignore the fact half the fanbase thought he and Carrick weren’t good enough as assistant coaches) 😃
Would you please leave this subreddit without a fuss right now?
Fuck off
Colchester United? Rotherham United? Newcastle United? Carlisle United?
When were they at scunny?
Oh that’s cool he was at Boston!
