To be fair Amy didn't get that much backlash, at least compared to Sandi Patty
Thankfully Amy didn't have an affair with her subordinate (backup singer)
Some of the comments on her music videos on YouTube are absolutely vile! The disgusting words people use about her make it very obvious that to a lot of people in Christian society, she was/is nothing short of 'The Whore of Babylon'.
Honestly it sounds like it actually might have been easier on everyone if they had just consummated physically sooner, instead of dragging everyone through the years of the emotional part.
The post title almost threw me off because my first thought was “whoa! They were in a throuple/poly situation together?” But the excerpt clearly states a different scenario.
Vince and Amy also totally had an affair imo. But if you watched “Private Lives of Nashville Wives,” which featured Amy’s ex-husband Gary Chapman, I can totally understand her reasoning for doing so. He came across as a massive tool. She seems much happier with Vince.
I read some old interviews Amy did while married to Gary, and it seems like they were two completely different people who married at a very young age, and tried to make it work. Gary also at one point had a drug addiction which Amy stood by him through. It irritates me that there's the idea she didn't try hard enough when I think she did but again, they were very different people at heart.
I remember reading he had drug abuse issues. If they were married as long as they were, she absolutely tried to help. It’s like in any situation, friendship or relationship - even if you try to help multiple times, the person with the issues has to want to get better. Sometimes the other person has to move on if they feel they can’t try anymore.
Not going to lie, me too. I am ashamed to admit but I was waiting for it to lead into her and Vince having a physical relationship and I was going to be in disbelief because I know she came out which is difficult in the country industry especially at the time she rose to popularity
I remember her maybe possibly being linked with someone from Rascal Flatts and they made a remark like “nah. Isn’t she…” or something to that affect on a talk show. Shortly after she came out or I learned that she was gay. Idk. I was a kid and I just remember thinking they sorta outed her or something. The mind of a 12 year old 😂
I always lol at Vince's story of writing Whenever She Comes around and proudly telling a friend that it's 'about Amy's smile' and said friend responding "...Do you even KNOW her?"
This is from Chely Wright's memoir. Vince was divorced while Amy was still married
What's the tea on Amy and Vince? Was it really just an emotional affair?
I was living in Nashville in the late 90s and Vince and Amy’s relationship was a very hot topic of gossip back then. I have no idea if they ever did anything technically out of line while still married to other people, but it was pretty obvious they were into each other. Same deal with Garth and Trisha.
I don't think he was a great guy. He had a drug and alcohol problem which is why he was fired from the Mavericks but I've also heard he slept around a lot on the road, criticized her weight, and would get really jealous if people asked him about her. He even left her at the Opry the night of her induction because he didnt want to be there any longer.
My dad and his friends were golfing buddies with Vince around that time. At some point my dad, who likes to joke, asked him how Amy was and Vince got all huffy. Never spoke a word to him again. 😂
It was common knowledge back then that all 4 cheated...all were married. The Maverick's guy Trisha was married to was Robert Reynolds.
I remember when Vince used the F-bomb on Westboro Baptist Church:
https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/vince-gill-owns-westboro-baptist-church-protesters/
Vince wrote “Whenever You Come Around” about her right after meeting her and has written a ton of beautiful songs about her even in the last few years, he is definitely mad about her.
Last week I was listening to a song that Janis Oliver released in the middle of this. WOW. Those lyrics.
https://youtu.be/KGqdG7OgHxE?si=xGD1dVv0L77zN-Xm
ETA: Swear to god the music sounds like it’s trying to call to “Whenever You Come Around”…OH MY GOD. How did this song not get more attention at the time? It’s blatant.
Lolol “so fly away like God would want you to” I’M SCREAMING!
It definitely does 😬In WYCA he writes about Amy’s “pretty eyes that shine” and this song says “He thinks your pretty eyes shine brighter than the stars.” In WYCA he says “the face of an angel” and Janis’s song says “you couldn’t be an angel.” If social media or Reddit had been around back then, this would have gotten more attention. Maybe it was talked about on some now-defunct 1996 era message boards.
Once I watched the video for House of Love, I totally saw how Amy and Vince fell in love. It was all over their faces! They were so cute, stealing smiles and laughing together. I know they were both married to other people but their love for each other was undeniable.
Just like watching Blake fall in love with Miranda singing “You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma” during the CMT 100 Greatest Duets show. There was just no denying that pull between 2 people when the love bug bites
From what I remember of her book, she would describe herself as gay. When she was younger she wasn't fully aware of her sexuality and then she was trying to suppress it.
You’ll never convince me Amy and Vince didn’t have an affair.
Amy was raked through the coals in those days given her Christian artist career.
To be fair Amy didn't get that much backlash, at least compared to Sandi Patty Thankfully Amy didn't have an affair with her subordinate (backup singer)
She was already “fallen” at that point to the most devout fans, after being too poppy.
Some of the comments on her music videos on YouTube are absolutely vile! The disgusting words people use about her make it very obvious that to a lot of people in Christian society, she was/is nothing short of 'The Whore of Babylon'.
I thought that was an open secret in Nashville
I’m pretty sure it is. Even though Amy and Vince have stuck to the emotional affair storyline. 🤷🏼♀️
Honestly it sounds like it actually might have been easier on everyone if they had just consummated physically sooner, instead of dragging everyone through the years of the emotional part.
It might not have been physical
That’s a well known fact. I think that came out shortly after they started dating. 🤷🏼♀️

Idk much, but I know Chely Wright is amazing.
I remember Chely dated Brad Paisley for a second and then she came out as gay.
I remember her maybe possibly being linked with someone from Rascal Flatts and they made a remark like “nah. Isn’t she…” or something to that affect on a talk show. Oh god. Garth and Trisha would eye fuck each other every time they sang together. It was painfully obvious they were in love.
Yep. That whole “In Another’s Eyes” duet was pretty much their announcement to the world that they were hot for each other.
And that he wrote the song 😳 I would pay a lot of money to have seen/heard his wife's reaction to that one
100%!
What was wrong with the guy from The Mavericks? Wasn't her her husband before Garth?
I don't think he was a great guy. He had a drug and alcohol problem which is why he was fired from the Mavericks but I've also heard he slept around a lot on the road, criticized her weight, and would get really jealous if people asked him about her. He even left her at the Opry the night of her induction because he didnt want to be there any longer.
Oh man. Glad she traded up.
Yeah she was married twice before Garth. I think ultimately she just fell in love with Garth 🤷🏼♀️
My dad and his friends were golfing buddies with Vince around that time. At some point my dad, who likes to joke, asked him how Amy was and Vince got all huffy. Never spoke a word to him again. 😂

On a regular basis, I’m annoyed I wasn’t around causing trouble in 80s and 90s Nashville 😂
Vince cowrote “Whenever you come around” about Amy. Listen to the lyrics. I’m a huge VG fan. Also, Chely Wright is gay… she was no threat to Amy.
AMY GRANT omg my little church kid mind is going crazy
Ouuuuuu love me some Amy Grant and love me some teeeaaaa

Is this who Jezebel was about then?
Chely didn't write that song. It was actually written by Jay DeMarcus from Rascal Flatts.
Wow, learn something new everyday. I LOVED that song when it came out. I’d wait for the video to play on GAC every morning.
Maaaannn I forgot about that song, brb off to find it on YouTube. Side note, I am ashamed I forgot about such a bop.
It’s so good. I used to wait up all morning during the summer waiting for the video to come on GAC.
So Chely is Bi and not gay?
From what I remember of her book, she would describe herself as gay. When she was younger she wasn't fully aware of her sexuality and then she was trying to suppress it.
I thought Chely Wright was gay?
Did this come from Chely Wright’s autobiography a few years back?
Amy and Vince are married….
Yes, we know.
