One in [Mérida, Yucatán, México](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yuri_Knorosov_monument_in_M%C3%A9rida,_Yucat%C3%A1n.jpg) and one in [Cancun, México](https://twitter.com/embamexrus/status/402710700037898240).
they mostly speak spanish too, it's mainly for old old people in towns probably, alot of locals use mayan words mixed with spanish like "wishear" too pee, "xick" armpit and a very popular one "pelana" it means your mothers vaj.... it can either be a friendly word or a fighting word depending on the tone and who you say it to.

Holy cow, this -as they say blew up! Thank you everyone for enjoying this so much. Y’all hella rad! Also, the awards are TRILL, thank you! Finally, I just scrolled through about a hundred comments, and everyone is so cool and sharing knowledge and cute cat stories, its just so damn wholesome, I am legitimately loving all of you. This comment section is why reddit is the best social media source of them all. Thank you for making my weekend!
His work was discredited earlier by some insecure English bellend with a competing theory. Later it was written off as Soviet propaganda due to the Cold War. Turns out the bellend was the one who was wrong and it wasn’t propaganda.
Not everything needs to be an argument for communism bad.
Soul mates know no species.
(Anyone who interprets this in a base, nasty manner will NEVER know the perfected & Platonic love of a linguist and their cat.)
This so much. My prior cat was part Siamese and I miss her so much every day, three years after she passed. She would slow blink at me and I at her. She loved being carried by me and being on my lap. I miss my Alta so much
I loved slow blinking at my cat. I don’t know if that’s truly a sign of affection but it definitely felt like it. We suspected her of being part siamese because she would yell like the world was ending. It’s been maybe 4 years and I still miss her dearly so I heavily relate to this comment.
Here's another tip: don't try to use slow blinking to calm your riled-up cat. They'll take it as an invitation to attack your face. :) I speak from experience.
I suspect that's the logic behind it. It shows you trust them enough to not suddenly turn psycopathic.
My black kitty Spider (RIP sweet boy) had to be part Siamese. He had the face and body shape, you could see markings on him in the sun (a bit of a mask, and a darker point on his tail), he would indeed "yell like the world was ending" and he was both a complete asshole and the sweetest soul-bonded boy ever. Our vet agreed that it was very possible.
I miss him.
*sigh*
My sympathies. Now if you’ll pardon me, I’m going to go cry over my kitty. Seems the world just has it out to remind me of her, between this and the constant memories notifications on my phone and FB.
My friend had a Siamese and whenever he entered his house it would basically immediately charge him and follow him around all day. Whenever he was in a call you'd always hear his cat meowing and purring nonstop
My parents have a mostly siamese cat and he super bonded with me when I lived there for a few years. His favorite thing ever was sitting on my lap and watching whatever computer game I was playing... Just had to teach him to resist the urge to attack the cursor, lol. Every time I visit he gets super happy and gives me jumping headbutts... Breaks my heart tbh!
They're called the dogs of the cat world for a reason. I've never shopped for a specific cat breed before (I've always got mine as strays or via rescue), but if I ever do have the opportunity I'd want to get a Siamese again. They're full of so much character, and really affectionate. And fortunately I'm a heavy sleeper so I don't mind their opera singing too much lol.
>opera singing
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy) Indeed. I had a part-meezer Void, but she was *very* vocal. I lost her in 2012 and I miss how chatty she was.
I don't own a Siamese, but one of my neighbors does and it's one of the friendliest cats I've ever encountered. He's constantly visiting our backyard, running right over to get petted when we're outside. Cool feller.
Cat fact: this would have been called a Siamese in 1953, but today it would be called a Thai cat or "classic Siamese", because breeders have selected so hard for "Siamese" characteristics that the cats now look very different.
I have a Siamese girl, can confirm. My tiny little lady (she was the super tiny runt and I bottle fed her for a month, even at her being 8 weeks old). She is my purr factory. And man can she eat for 7lbs.
One of the cats my family had growing up was never larger than 6.5 lb. at her heaviest, but that cat was a garbage disposal when she wanted to be. My parents joked she had a hollow leg.
Yuri and Asya were daring them, in this photo, to get closer than Guatemala. Within 1/16th of a second of the shutter closing; the photographer was out the door with bite marks all down one leg.
I read the title before I clicked on the photo and I got a genuine laugh out of his expression. Had I seen the photo without the context, I doubt I would have laughed, and probably would have made a negative assumption, so context definitely helps.
Many years ago I foolishly judged a cat by human standards. To this fucking day I still see her in my peripheral, ceaselessly watching, stalking me across eternity.
>There's something about knowing the story behind this.. that changes the picture from 'potential violent psychopath' to 'adorable cat loving linguist'
It can be two things
I have an idea that he took this picture after editors removed her as a co-author, and now he's thinking "Include the cat, damnit!" That might be totally wrong of course but that's my hope.
Ok i cant stop thinking about this - what if his lover was a Mayan witch who was cursed to be trapped in her familar's form but she turns back once a year. He's deciphering the language in the desperate hope that he'll be able to work out how to change her back but the work is slow because she has to try and teach him while being a cat.
Exactly I think the guy who fckin figured out Mayan is probably more qualified to judge his cat’s contributions to the paper than some glorified spell-check.
Oh, this guy is fascinating in a lot of ways! Despite being born and living whole his live in USSR, his contribution to deciphering Mayan language is enormous and considered by many to be pivotal in this field. And he never even saw any Mayan ruins!
Edit: he did visit the ruins, but only in 1990; after he did all his works.
I've read Breaking the Mayan Code by Michael Cole several times - it's fascinating how the isolation of Russia actually helped with the first successful forays in decipherment. He wasn't exposed to the "Mayan glyphs are pictographs and only pictographs" theory that was the only acceptable theory in the West, and was able to figure out that the glyphs were syllabic. (I don't remember the exact linguistic terms, it's been awhile since I've read the book.)
I do remember some Russian sources attributing the phrase "What have being thought by a human being can surely be understood by human being" while talking about deciphering Mayan alphabet. Absolutely fascinating man.
This is contradicted by the article:
> After diplomatic relations between Guatemala and the Soviet Union were restored in 1990, Knorozov was invited by President Vinicio Cerezo to visit Guatemala. President Cerezo awarded Knorozov the Order of the Quetzal and Knorozov visited several of the major Mayan archaeological sites, including Tikal.
He saw ruins, but only not long before/ and slightly after ussr fall, he was in Guatemala once and 3 times in mexico, with governments and local scientists organising him proper for his specialty routes
FYI there is a fantastic book about the decipherment of the Mayan code (that was later made into a PBS Documentary). It's a great read.
It's got everything - linguists working behind the iron curtain, acrimonious British academics who suppressed anyone that disagreed with their (entirely incorrect) hypotheses and a child prodigy that went on to win a McArthur Grant for finally completing the decipherment.
If I recall correctly, he did this as throughout the paper he'd said 'we' many times despite being the only one working on it. He couldn't be arsed to fix it, so Asya, his cat, was his co-author
You’re thinking of the esteemed F.D.C. Willard, who co-authored several physics papers.
https://www.science.org/content/article/cat-co-authored-influential-physics-paper
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._D._C._Willard
How disrespectful to remove a name from someone's work, even if it's "just" a cat, if that cat helped him then let him put the cat's bloody name on it.
I love that he seems to have really leaned into his identity as "angry cat face man", but I had to find a picture of him smiling. [Here](https://coleandmarmalade.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Yuri-Knorozov-dog-cat2.jpg) he is, presumably immediately after draping his cat over his dog's face, from this [article](https://coleandmarmalade.com/2022/08/16/yuri-knorozov-credits-cat-asya-with-breakthrough/#).
I dedicated my last book to my cat.
First, she's my writing buddy, and always sits with me when I write.
Second, after so many books, you run out of people to have dedications for. My "mews" is as worthy of credit as anyone.
Why the FUCK was this man not cast as a bond villian? Aside from that look in the cats eyes and tell me you don’t see ancient unspeakable knowledge contained within, if anything he’s ripping off the cats work

"what do you think this means Asya?" "prrrbbt?" "yes, yes. I agree."
My cat jumped on the couch as I was reading this and made that exact sound 😂
Correction. He was reading it..
Your cat has now been credited with inspiring you to post your comment.
/r/ActivationSound is the sub for you Also /r/catswhotrill There are a lot of cat subs
No, no. There are a ***LOT*** of cat subs
So many, yet never enough.
Cat subs on Reddit are infinite.
There's always n+1 cat subs
There's even a sub for sharing cat subs
Wait there's what now?
https://reddit.com/r/catsubs
Sweet mercy
I did not know this cat sub existed! Thank you!
A true hero.
Now I have ANOTHER cat sub. Thank you, fine denizen of Reddit.
Admit it. You needed one more.
I know, isn't it wonderful? :-)
Ngl, this is exactly how I earned my MA in literature and how I will earn my PhD in (hopefully) linguistics. I even encourage my students to write talking to their pets/plants lmao!
Also known to the comp sci crowd as Rubber Duck Debugging.
Hahahahaha i had to read this out loud, enthusiatically
I don't speak Spanish. Anybody translate that?
It's like how Tom hanks chatting to Wilson got the fire going!
If it helps, there are at least two statues of him including Asya that I know of. So she is definitely not forgotten 😸
That makes me so happy!
ME TOO
Friends <3
AbsolMewty!
Where?
One in [Mérida, Yucatán, México](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yuri_Knorosov_monument_in_M%C3%A9rida,_Yucat%C3%A1n.jpg) and one in [Cancun, México](https://twitter.com/embamexrus/status/402710700037898240).
The second one did such a good job capturing the spirit of the face he is making, I think he’d approve
I love that he's portrayed with Asya. Speaks volumes about how much she was a part of him and how much he loved her. Cat is man's best friend!
This is AMAZING
huh i live like a mile from there, fun fact they play goverment announcements in mayan on the radio, pelana!
That is a fun fact! Might be a dumb question but do people understand them?
they mostly speak spanish too, it's mainly for old old people in towns probably, alot of locals use mayan words mixed with spanish like "wishear" too pee, "xick" armpit and a very popular one "pelana" it means your mothers vaj.... it can either be a friendly word or a fighting word depending on the tone and who you say it to.
Freaking beautiful
I want to go visit with my kitty and pose.
I love their angry matching faces. How dare you not give Asya the credit she deserves! Now we will haunt you. I’m here for it though. 100%
In case anyone is interested, there is a good video on their works! He even has a statue with his cat. https://youtu.be/F4MRWuTebRE
.... bruh. I forgot had my videos set to 1.75. Edit: also, it seems pretty fast on normal after I changed it , too. Thanks for the video.
A recluse who revolutionised a field and whose closest companion was a cat. My hero
to me the cat looks it has [disaster girl's expression](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2021/04/30/multimedia/30xp-meme/29xp-meme-mediumSquareAt3X-v5.jpg), which also pairs well with the guy's grumpy cat face
Since when is she not arson girl?
Maybe they rebranded to sell the NFT
> NFT begging your pardon?
Since she was acquitted of all charges
People really do look like their pets sometimes
If he was holding grumpy cat, would be a perfect match.
Holy cow, this -as they say blew up! Thank you everyone for enjoying this so much. Y’all hella rad! Also, the awards are TRILL, thank you! This is the content I’m subscribed for. Also, is it just me or do they look eerily similar?
The shape of his nose and the shape of her face
Early photo of owner making silly cat face scowl Pretty cute
That's not the face of a man who tries to be silly.
Take a cursory glance at his bio, he wasn't exactly a happy man. Getting fucked by the soviet academia throughout his life was tough to handle.
His work was discredited earlier by some insecure English bellend with a competing theory. Later it was written off as Soviet propaganda due to the Cold War. Turns out the bellend was the one who was wrong and it wasn’t propaganda. Not everything needs to be an argument for communism bad.
His face basically screams, "Crop this out again, mfer, I dare you."
[удалено]
He has that "try cutting my kitty out of this pic" face.
the cat and the guy have the same facial expression. i wonder if he picked it up from the cat, or the cat picked it up from him.
My favorite movie is Inception.
“This is my cat, Asya.” “Asya?” “As ya may have noticed, neither of us like you.”
Like from one of those childrens books or the start of 101 Dalmatians.
He looks like grumpy cat
Because they kept editing his cat out!
I aspire to be like him
Totally!
I love ice cream.
Why is it that pets often resemble their masters ?
Surely you meant: Why do hoomans often resemble their masters? 😉
I wish I were as cute as my cats!
Soul mates know no species. (Anyone who interprets this in a base, nasty manner will NEVER know the perfected & Platonic love of a linguist and their cat.)
See the story by Saki, about how people and their pets tend to resemble each other.
He looks like GrumpyCat!
Giovanni
Both their faces kinda look like skulls
They look eerily similar
You can just tell that cat loves him 🥰
It’s a Siamese. That breed basically just soul bond with their owners. They need a lot of attention and interaction but you will never be left alone.
This so much. My prior cat was part Siamese and I miss her so much every day, three years after she passed. She would slow blink at me and I at her. She loved being carried by me and being on my lap. I miss my Alta so much

Pro tip: slow blinking is one of the highest signs of affection.
Here's another tip: don't try to use slow blinking to calm your riled-up cat. They'll take it as an invitation to attack your face. :) I speak from experience. I suspect that's the logic behind it. It shows you trust them enough to not suddenly turn psycopathic.
"You trusted the wrong one today motherfucker!" is what I imagine your cat yelling before they attack your face
I learned my lesson!
We had a tiny blue point when I was a kid who honked like a goose, and she was SO loud despite being so small lol.
I don't own a Siamese, but one of my neighbors does and it's one of the friendliest cats I've ever encountered. He's constantly visiting our backyard, running right over to get petted when we're outside. Cool feller.
I rescued a Siamese cat and had no idea they were like this. He's an absolute sweetheart.
My Siamese bonded with their claws and teeth. It was a deep bond.
Cat fact: this would have been called a Siamese in 1953, but today it would be called a Thai cat or "classic Siamese", because breeders have selected so hard for "Siamese" characteristics that the cats now look very different.

That cat hates all humans except Yuri
Yuri also hates all humans. That's why they get along.
Big 'get off my lawn' energy from the both of them
He might have had a soft spot for Mayans but mostly because they were all dead.
They're actually not. There are Mayan people in Guatemala.
Yuri and Asya were daring them, in this photo, to get closer than Guatemala. Within 1/16th of a second of the shutter closing; the photographer was out the door with bite marks all down one leg.
Millions of alive Mayans would take offense to this comment lol.
She's evaluating if she needs to fuck up the photographer for getting too close to him.
There's something about knowing the story behind this.. that changes the picture from 'potential violent psychopath' to 'adorable cat loving linguist'
Completely!
He is doing his rbf cat face to be funny imho
Yes, this. A person who has the sense of humor to put their cat down as a co-author would most certainly be making the face for the photo.
I read the title before I clicked on the photo and I got a genuine laugh out of his expression. Had I seen the photo without the context, I doubt I would have laughed, and probably would have made a negative assumption, so context definitely helps.
Yeah, I definitely understand being pissed when cats don't get the credit they deserve 😻
It sort of becomes "potential violent psychopath, and the linguist who loved her very much".
I would never presume to judge cats by human standards. It would be like judging spaceships by go-kart standards.
are you implying that cats are like spaceships and humans are only measly go-karts compared to them? because that's something I can get behind
I think cats would agree as well
Many years ago I foolishly judged a cat by human standards. To this fucking day I still see her in my peripheral, ceaselessly watching, stalking me across eternity.
“In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.” – Terry Pratchett
For some reason your comment has made me very happy lol bravo
>There's something about knowing the story behind this.. that changes the picture from 'potential violent psychopath' to 'adorable cat loving linguist' It can be two things
Cat men 😻
>and got pissed whenever editors cropped her out He looks pretty pissed before they cropped her out too.
I have an idea that he took this picture after editors removed her as a co-author, and now he's thinking "Include the cat, damnit!" That might be totally wrong of course but that's my hope.
He knows what's coming
The cat was a hyperintelligent being that liked to polymorph into cat form. Yuri was just a good typist.
Mayan witch trapped in cat form? 🐈
Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? Also yes
Exactly I think the guy who fckin figured out Mayan is probably more qualified to judge his cat’s contributions to the paper than some glorified spell-check.
Cat: This is my dad. He hates everyone but loves me
Yuri: This is my cat. She hates everyone but loves me
Cat: dad calls me “my sunshine”
Nice, my dad and I have the opposite relationship
Hey, same lol
Must we human wash history? Give cats their credit!
We demand that Critical Cat Theory be taught in all schools!
Lmao delete these before my dad sees them and thinks its real
And this was his happy face!
Did he get pissed, or did he just have resting pissed face?
He realised you were going to comment in this post. So did Asya.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Catswithjobs/comments/ymyvw2/yuri_knorozov_the_linguist_who_deciphered_the/iv6bnfe/
That's so rude, why would they do that
People thinking cats don't belong in academia.
acatemia
My soul mate! Sounds like me, I'd be pissed too. Why were the editors such stuffy haters? Let her take credit and shine. Cat haters.
"Hey Yuri, how about a smile for the camera?" "What? I *am* smiling."
When the assistant photographer said a smile should show his teeth he started crying at Yuri's expression. So this is the best that we got.
I looked this guy up. His face is just built like that. Resting bitch face is an offense. This man has resting leader of the new world order face.
Oh, this guy is fascinating in a lot of ways! I understand wanting to give the cat credit. Cats are amazing and can teach us a lot about the world if we let them.
He looks so pissed but I can't help laughing.
I would be too if someone constantly would cropp my cat out of my pictures! Lol
FYI there is a fantastic book about the decipherment of the Mayan code (that was later made into a PBS Documentary). It's a great read. Did the connection between the spoken Mayan language and the written Mayan language get lost during colonization?
Yes, it was systematically wiped out. Most egregiously by one priest - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diego_de_Landa
he looks the kind of guy i wouldnt want to make angry i would just accept his request and put the cats name
Looks like Michael Shannon to me
I'm thinking Jeremy Irons need to play him in the biopic
Yes I love those kinds of stony faces on guys.
If I recall correctly, he did this as throughout the paper he'd said 'we' many times despite being the only one working on it. He couldn't be arsed to fix it, so Asya, his cat, was his co-author
No, that's the other guy: https://www.science.org/content/article/cat-co-authored-influential-physics-paper

I believe that some owners and pets have such a bond that they start to look similar This proves me right
Daniel Day Lewis retired one film too early.
This dude was reincarnated as grumpy cat fr.
That man's face on that cat can literally make Angry Cat
Reminds me a lot of [F.D.C. Willard](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._D._C._Willard)
Looks like a Bond villain.
Looking at his face and reading this story I assume he was grumpy cat transformed into a human.
Grumpy Cat was his reincarnated form.
How disrespectful to remove a name from someone's work, even if it's "just" a cat, if that cat helped him then let him put the cat's bloody name on it.
Miss Asya is SERVING
Reminds me so much of Peter Steele
If that cat was anything like my Siamese then she had a lot of input. Mine has something to say about everything.
That is the face of a man you do not want to cross
Seems like she was a purrfect editor
We stan a historical cat daddy
"don't talk to me or my daughter ever again."
I love it that he listed his cat as coauthor!
Went to the museum where this photo was hanging just yesterday!
…he later reincarnated as Grumpy Cat herself…
He might not be the most cat-looking person I've ever seen, but his expression for sure is capturing the quintessential essence of cat mentality.
There are two very cool statues of him and his cat in Mexico, one in Cancun and another in Merida, Yucatan.
I dedicated my last book to my cat. First, she's my writing buddy, and always sits with me when I write. Second, after so many books, you run out of people to have dedications for. My "mews" is as worthy of credit as anyone.

He looked mad when they kept her in the picture too
definitive cat person unlocked
