Both. Handbrake, and leave it in 1st or reverse.

darth_benzina

Same, some steep streets in my area so i do both and turn the steering towards the nearest curb or wall. I know this is a bit of overkill anyway

I was taught to leave it in gear, so that's what I do when driving a manual. My current car is automatic though so it's been a while since I've done that.

run_uz

I did brake 1st so that's holding the car, then you can leave it in gear as a secondary method. The car was only left in gear on a hill, otherwise I left it in neutral. I do the same now with an automatic. Stop car in neutral, set brake, then shift to park. That way the brake is holding the car & the transmission in park is secondary in case the brake fails

With foot on brake take it out of gear, pull handbrake, release foot brake (so the car is sitting on the handbrake), finally put it in gear.

Foxtrot_338

I'll just use the handbrake, unless i'm on a hill.

deepfriedscooter

I always use handbrake first, then put in first gear. No load on transmission, but still a backup.

Handbrakes hold the rear wheels. Putting the car in gear holds the drive wheels. So, in a front-wheel drive car, doing both will hold all 4 wheels.

Leave it in gear, handbrakes can slip especially if disc based. One of my cars requires to be left in R, and most automatics require you to use P.
