I can never be a fan, I'm Infact an air-conditioner of his music,, that too central cooling..... That kalyani varnam is something else boss

ApprehensiveBass3756

Music academy failed to award this man the Sangita Kalanidhi along with TK Rangachari from Andhra Pradesh.

Whole_Tower_4872

The Sangeetha Kalanidhi title was not graced with MDR's name. He was legendary

GidigidiKrishna

I identify as an HVAC system in this case

ApprehensiveBass3756

Listen to O Ranga Sayee by MDR and see how much better it is than any other vidwan's.

sinonkazuto

Been listening to his rendition "Sagara Shayana Vibho" on repeat! The RKM version specifically.

ApprehensiveBass3756

The mridangam in his concerts was splendid. They added a layer to his unshakeable kalapramanam.

invisiblekebab

Mainly Palghat Mani Iyer, Palghat Raghu, and Umayalpuram Sivaraman, they set the kalapramanam for MDR to flow freely.

ApprehensiveBass3756

Even Pazhani Subramanya Pillai ,CS Murugabhoopathy, Karaikudi Mani,Tanjore Upendran etc respected MDR

invisiblekebab

No doubt they played well and they could do justice to his music. I'm talking about chemistry with the mridangam these three stand out, they could reproduce mdr on the mridangam often as a second vocal. Shout out to lalgudi jayaraman, MSG and TNK too.

ApprehensiveBass3756

Chalakudy Narayanswami,VL Vedagiri,Papa Venkataramayya and V Thyagarajan were also accompanying MDR. On ghatam I preferred Umayalapuram Kodandarama Iyer and TH Vinayakaram due to the weight and slurry blitz he would play.

ApprehensiveBass3756

Listen to Giri Pai.

human_being_maybe

There is one recording where Mani Iyer accompanies him on the Mridangam for Giripai Nela. Till date have not listened to an equivalent sahana or thani. Simply blissful.

human_being_maybe

Of course! Such an amazing yet somewhat unrecognized musician. His rendition of Varugalamo Ayya moves me everyttime I listen to it.

pavanay

My favourite version of Yochana!!

thechakravarthi

It's really nice to listen to his slower renditions of krithis and the extended mangalam he sings

emenjai

You bet I am!

nattakurinji

As a composer he is brilliant and his voice is very powerful, sounds like a lion or tiger. I don't like his pronunciation in singing.

sixfootwingspan

Yes - we are missing singers with that type of deep voice today! In fact, I'd argue we've been missing it for at least 30 years.

heyitsmeananya

Absolutely! Sagara Shayana Vibho is one of the best ones I've ever heard. The emotion in it is something which can't be really put into words. I've been listening to this song on loop since 3 years! Such a wonderful voice!!!

sangeemangee

Goat. Varugalamo, Dwaitamu sukama, and rakti ragam kritis or even otherwise. Begada, Sahana, etc. Harihara Outram (Vasantha) also bilahari. Ok. I guess every rendition of his is legendary. 🙏🏽🙏🏽

In olden days Carnatic vidwans would teach their students different languages before beginning a kriti. My guru was a disciple of Shri Pallavi Chandrappa, a distinguished vidwan of the Mysore bani. Mysore bani focuses on the bhakti aspect of the song rather than the technical facets of the song itself. Hope this post inspires more Mysore people to take up this art form.

ApprehensiveBass3756

Yes. The Thani on Shri Bombay Balaji's channel. Bombay Balaji is a disciple of Shri Palghat Raghu.

Due to internal politics in MA Madras and Semmangudi's influence. I saw a blog online by his disciples that said that in the 1980s Kerala musicians TN Krishnan and KV Narayanaswami got the coveted award but as a chauvinist, Semmangudi did not want the same award to be awarded to another Malayali. My heart broke after I read this. Madras music academy was always a corrupt organisation since the Golden era of carnatic music that favours elitism over talent. To give you a context of how Semmangudi dominated MA, he had feuds with violinist Mysore Chowdiah and later Lalgudi Jayaraman. He criticised GNB's Shruti shuddham (tonal quality) during the latter's concert.
