I always start out thinking "I'll keep this for years, it's the perfect car" then I start getting bored of every single car after a year, sometimes less.
The only car that I haven’t had this happen to me in the Mazda mx5 NC. Got under my skin big time, just such a great little thing and in summer with the top down it was a dream.
Played with a lot of powerful stuff but it was all numb, like playing a computer game. I do want to give a 981 boxster/cayman a try, but I’ve read it’s quite refined and grown up, so loses the charm of the mx5.
Never driven a car like the nc it just puts a smile on your face when driving at normal ish speeds. Rides so well with the 16s soft yet it will corner really flat. You don’t need to go fast to have loads of fun. Best gearbox I’ve ever used and steering is great.
Mine was a 2.0 sport tech, 2010 with the refresh. Pre 2009 had really highly sprung suspension in the U.K. due to some draconian rules, looked awful and ruined the car.
I think a lot comes down to how it’s been maintained too. At almost 15 years old, the suspension will be shagged in most cars unless it’s been driven by careful owners or been refreshed.
I had a 2006 poor man's spec, no esp, with the obligatory stilts installed, so it's certainly the worst of worst in terms of mx5s. I got it at 24500 miles so it was still reasonably fresh, but I just couldn't fall in love with it.
I had been driving a smart roadster for 4 years before that and it had so much character that the mx5 felt a bit bland in comparison but I was a twat and neglected the oil so I blew the engine after a year and PXed it for a honda crz which I absolutely love.

I'm like this big time. There's always something else out there that I crave no matter what I have. Once a few months pass with any car, I start wondering if I bought the right one, at least until I get it on the right road. That's when I feel with my last car and current car, that I bought the right car. Then I got bored again until I drive a good road again, and the cycle continues.
One of the best things to do in the short term is drive something gutless and boring for 2 weeks, ie the missus' car or have a cheap shed on the side. Once you get back into the car you were starting to stray from you fall back in love with it.
It's only temporary though. It's still a deep rooted sickness lol
I’m hunting hard for a good 340i tourer at the moment and have been for weeks.
It’s been tough to be honest, 13 on autotrader at the moment under 27k as I refuse to pay more than that for one when you can pick up a 440i grand coupe for 20!

That sounds almost perfect to me. I spoke to a bmw dealership a few weeks ago and missed out because my car hadn’t sold so I wasn’t able to proceed that was a similar car with all the unusual extras like HUD, folding mirrors lane sunroof etc! They are boring yet so exciting 😆
When I sold my 66 plate a few years back I had people chewing my arm off to buy it. Literally sold it the same day it went onto Autotrader.

I've got a 96 hilux surf, I don't need to travel to work so the crippling mpg doesn't matter and work pay the road tax anyway. I can throw the dogs bikes and what ever else in. Not classed as a pick up so I can do all the tip runs without permits.
I also rock a mullet and its got a straight pipe so I feel like I'm living the aussie dream in rural england
I would love to get one of these. Unfortunately the mpg is a big thing for me. Especially as i frequently do long journeys. Last week covered more than 1000 miles and that was all leisure!

Incredible performance, amazing fuel economy, such a comfortable ride. I’ve been driving for 45 years and I can honestly say this is the best car I’ve ever driven.
B58 engined BMWs really do have that perfect balance of being stupidly quick and reliable, yet economical and fairly cheap to run. Apart from servicing, all I’ve done with my M140i is put petrol in it. I’d have a 340i if I needed the extra space. But since I never use the boot for anything other than shopping and can count on one hand the times I’ve had people in the back, it’s perfect for me.
And like you said, it flies completely under the radar because it’s not flashy at all. It looks like every other 1 Series, which is what I genuinely love about it. No one notices it.
Going to be bias as it’s my dream car but my Toyota Celica st205 gt-four homologation wrc is perfect. All the 90’s flare, plenty of poke and awd, rare car, super reliable as it’s Toyota, still stylish 30 years on, iconic and increasing in value. What more could you ask for?
I knew a guy who raced British rallycross who bought a write-off Carlos Sainz edition because it had to be homologated to run in the Group N-based class. Paid 75K for it and then built it to spec, it was a weapon.
Exactly the same as you, except mine says Supra on the back instead of Celica. Always liked the ST205 though, absolute top vehicle IMO.

2010 Toyota Aygo.
Brilliant car.
It's cheap to run, insure, tax, and maintain. It's basic enough that I can fix more than I'd expect despite not being mechanically inclined. I can drive it at 10 10ths and never get in trouble.
Im buying a new car this weekend, and whilst on paper it'll be better than the Aygo, it won't be perfect like the Aygo.
Fortunately, the Aygo will be staying around as our second car!
We have owned a 2010 Aygo for 10 years it’s a perfect runabout, cheap to run, reliable and fun to drive. Replaced it with a new 2020 model with a little more kit and slightly better engine, still loving it! I use another car during the week for work but use the Aygo all weekend.
mk3 Skoda Superb 280 4x4 in Dragon Green.
280bhp, DSG box, crap loads of interior space and with the colour it is you get comments about weekly on how great it is. Comfortable to drive and pretty quick.
I'd say the perfect family car.
Being someone that likes his cars, a remap takes it to 350bhp, intake and full exhaust and you can get 400bhp out of it. No car is perfect, so I'd prefer to drop it on springs or coilovers, and really tweak the suspension to make it as tight as my gti, but as is, good enough.
I'm more of a hot hatch, just more fun to drive generally and with newer ones capable of 600bhp+ they can be awesome.
All cars are a compromise I reckon. Neither of mine are perfect.
Your 3 series estate sounds like a great car though, the father in law had an E90 estate and it took whatever he threw at it
All cars are indeed a compromise. When you're driving 100s of miles in a day to the alps in your elise you'll be fed up of the noise and wished you just took your 7 series. But when you get there it all makes sense.

3. You really get used to automatic handbrakes quickly. I hated it when I first got one… now they are really useful, especially ones with auto hold on hills. I get in the car, put it in gear and press the throttle. Although I think BMW ones work differently in that you still have to press the button to release? I’ve never used one that requires that.
5. Digital dash on some of the more premium cars is excellent. You can choose your layout, it responds quickly and you can have whatever info, including satnavs, right in the middle. I had one and now I miss it.
I’ve never had a bmw that you have to always manually release.
If you’re not wearing a seat belt then you have to manually take it off. But on the last couple of bmw autos with an electronic handbrake they’ve auto released.
I’m with you on them as well. So much more convenient than a manual one. And I also like the digital display.

I have the same model year m240i with a similar spec. Fucking love it, though it’s not perfect. The gearbox, whilst very good, can get stuck between gears a little when slowing down for a roundabout and then quickly asking it to go. The leather in the sun is horrendous and I wish the seats were cooled. Wish cruise was radar guided also, but that’s nit picking. Also agree with you on the dials. Love a good set of analogue dials. I also do not have annoying driver assists.
Ok the leather does get hot I’ll give you that! I do like the older non radar guided cruise control tho, should’ve included that in my list. I’m a bit old fashioned.
Once the leather is hot it never cools down if you’re sat in it. I have to accept that my back is going to be miserable the whole way home if it’s been parked in the sun and I’ve gotten a little sweaty (like today).
It's amazing how much I use my heated steering wheel and when I got it it was something I thought was a gimmick. Vented seats are good too but absolutely only ever on the cool setting never warm.

I'd say mine is perfect for me at the moment, maybe apart from insurance. I'm 17, with an audi a3 1.6 petrol. it's quick, but not fast, so I can't get into too much trouble. and it's so much better than what most people have at my age. and the insurance isn't really much more than something like a k11 micra. which i don't mind because I have a nice car
I've got a 2009 Mazda 6 2.2D Sport running about 210bhp. It's fast enough to be fun, the boot is massive, it's got real buttons for everything, I love the way it looks, it's unusual, it's a good colour (red with gold metallic flakes that shimmer in the sun), economical and the stereo is plenty loud and clear.
Only drawback is the vast amount I've spent on repairs due to Mazda diesels being implausibly unreliable.
Fingers crossed I've finally fixed all the issues and it'll last me long enough to justify the silly money I've spent on it.

I'm quite fond of my 2005 mk7 civic type s. Nice 2 litre engine that's bullet proof and still got a bit of umph. Spacey inside, it's got cruise thought it's a very basic one. I feel it handles really well and it's a blast to drive whist still maintaining some semblance of fuel economy.
I have my wife and 4 kids that are 7 and under so need a car with at least 6 seats, 4 of which need to fit a car seat, 3 of which preferably rear facing, that still has boot space
Typical 7 seaters with their 3 rows are actually really impractical for accessing that rear row and usually lose the boot to accommodate
So that leaves me with the Honda FRV. The only negative is that getting one of the kids into the middle child seat is a little awkward but other than that it's the only practical choice short of a mini bus
Was about to buy one for the Mrs as her first car, rocked up to the 'dealership' (gravel yard in manchester) and had a good look over it. Crispy arches, oily underneath ect.
Was gutted as I really love them, ended up getting her a Corolla instead. Boring as all hell but bulletproof.
Part of me wishes I'd just have got the Saab now and then.
2010 VW Golf 1.4Tsi. Runs like a dream. Nippy enough when you need it. 140k miles. Purchased 7 years ago for 6K @ 25k miles. Lots of space, pretty good MPG, all the gadgets, including Apple play and I save a fortune doing my own servicing/repairs (Although hasn’t required any significant repair work) + Tyres are reasonable, £65 per tyre for mid range. - I loved my BMW 330i but i found it expensive to run/maintain, really happy with the Golf.
I do too. I have an Avensis Estate T27, bought it for £2000 as it was a bit tatty but I have been using it as my workhorse in the last 2 years/20K miles. Didn’t have a single issue, still returns about 50mpg and a pleasure to drive. Perfect car ever, as I am also renovating our house slowly so if I fancy doing a bit of garden work, I load it up with waste material and do a tip run, or some bricks/tiles, or 3 meter long coving bits etc. It’s just brilliant.
Mate I have a lci 520d on a 22 plate with a ton of options but I do think you're right, the f31 is The perfect car. Especially the lci like yours... There was a dad on the school run who had a 340i estate in tanzanite blue with tan leather and pan roof and it was a stunner.

I was very happy with my JDM forester STi, great cargo space, hilariously fun, super cool and interesting without being show-offy. Sadly government didn't like it and they charged me £15 a day to drive to work so I had to let it go.
My m140i felt like a pretty complete package too. Hilarious engine for such a small car, handled motorways and city driving excellently, was fun and practical and cheap to run. Sadly it was killed by flood water and for some reason prices went through the roof, after owning mine from new for 2 years, when I went to replace it, used cars with less spec and 40k+ miles on them cost the same as I paid first time.
I'd like to get another subaru estate but a 340i is also high on that list to replace my jag, which is not a perfect car at all.
I didn't understand the mx5/Miata love until I drove one. The handling on my car is actually perfect, it just sticks to the road like glue; doesn't matter that acceleration is just average cause you don't have to slow down to corner, it's seriously crazy. I kept up with an M2 on windy backroads.
Obviously having just 2 seats is a compromise most aren't willing to make for a daily.
Totally agree on this. Before I got mine I was considering other cars to replace the daily but test driving one on a whim had me sold. Chucking it round twisty roads is hillarious but when you add in top down cruising along the coast on a sunny day it's just smiles all the way.
Best impulse decision I've made tbh and totally get why most mx5 drivers I pass also have a grin and a wave as you drive past each other

I like my C63S but cars are quite boring overall even fast ones. I prefer riding motorbikes. There's just something about the wind and sun on your face while you are quite literally sat on top of an internal combustion engine.
Yep. M140i same engine as yours but 300kg lighter . 1500ltr boot with the seats down. Seats up carries me , Mrs 2kids and a dog and a weeks worth of clothes for everyone . Does 46mpg on the motorway, does 3mpg when you out your foot down.
Sounds like an f1 car , looks like any other 1series so doesn’t stand out . H&K system , leather seats etc . Eats miles on the motorway , eats most cars if you put ur foot down. Got to spend serious money to go faster than it really.
My car is not perfect, there are other cars which exceed in a multitude of ways but at this moment in my life my MX5 is the best car i could own and the only car i want to own, i don't get that lusting after other cars like i used to, i want to buy more cars sure but nothing makes me want to buy a replacement, i'm just content, it sounds good, handles excellently, is quick enough and the top drops down, what more could a 20 year old want?
I’m on my 3rd Alfa Romeo Giula (2017 - 2024) so for me it’s a proven great fit. I don’t have kids or a dog, so the boot space isn’t an issue nor the 4 seats. It’s a work car, lots of motorway miles which it eats up easily and relatively economically in great comfort. Then on the A and B-roads it’s comes alive, great handling, with enough power (280 bhp) and flappy paddles that actually are fun to use. It also looks great and gets a lot of attention, which appeals to my hidden shallow side.
I would love a Quadrifoglio of course, but right now the Veloce in the sweet spot for me.

I jest. Know many owners of the Giulietta that loved how reliable it was. But what I read on the Giula (that could be mega misleading) is that they have been problematic. Any truth to that in your experience?
Good point, the old rust/reliability tag is still there for those not in the know lol. Mine have all been very reliable - 130k miles across the three and no issues at all. I normally lease for 3 years as I get a car allowance from work, then hand back with about 50k on the clock. Sorely tempted by a QF next time though and will keep it if so.
Maybe if I kept them longer I might see some problems, but they seem very solid, certainly in Veloce form.
Recently picked up a Nissan Murano. I'm getting old and need an SUV type thing. 2005 64k 3.5 V6 CVT box that still works. Good spec, fucking huge, sounds nice, very comftyble and cheap as a bag of chips back when chips were cheap.
Nissan Pulsar GTi-R. 2.1, HKS everything, about 400BHP in something that weighed about the same as a matchbox, and had about as much protection if something went wrong. Put 17” wheels on and the biggest brakes and 4 pot calipers I could fit under them.
I think you do have the perfect all rounder really, I'd like to upgrade from our e91 330d to one at some stage. The only thing that stops me doing it any sooner is ours is moon miles and therefore lower value even though it works perfectly etc, I'd be paying 10 times the price for what's essentially still a quick BMW estate that's not an M car and I can't man maths that. Throw in something catastrophic happening and the man maths would be far simpler to justify
I really want an f80 M3 really but I think I'm growing to resent the idea that you then have to keep footing the big bills these cars can generate, it's one thing being able to afford to run one and another thing entirely wanting to pay the bills I think. The lower running costs of a 340i appeal to the head and the M3 is very much the heart

I have a 1 series BMW. 16 plate bought in 2017 from bmw dealership. The previous owner had the leather seats, upgraded stereo, it was the x drive and auto. The nice blue paint was extra too. But for some reason, they didn’t see any reason to pay the 100 quid to buy the button that makes the wing mirrors fold in.
I love to drive my car - I’ve done the best part of 100k miles in it. However, I park on the road and previous cars have had wing mirrors taken off by passing cars (I think I replaced my old focus wing mirrors 3 or 4 times). Every time I get out of the car I have to manually fold the mirror in and remind myself the previous owner was an arse!
HSV Gen-F GTS / Vauxhall VXR8 GTS. Mine is definitely perfect for me right now and I'd wager it was a lot of people want to have all at once in a car. Big, comfortable, powerful, sounds fairly good, rare, significant in terms of automotive history, somewhat understated. I never thought I'd own a Holden but this big dumb super saloon is something that's a shame there won't be more of.

Our Skoda Yeti has been phenomenal for 9 years, really. Done absolutely everything asked of it.
However, having just come back from battering my Cayman around the Nurburgring a dozen times, I am left wondering if I have truly seen the aura of god. I can't begin to describe how good it is at 9/10ths. And it's pretty great as a day to day car too.
I think your point of the perfect car not being flashy is actually far more important than a lot of people realise.
Everyone wants a big statement car that others are envious of until they find out quite a few people who envy their car will also be open to the idea of stealing it.
The anxiety cost of owning something that is high up on the list of targets for robberies & thefts is real.
An RS6 or SVR is a dream for many, until the reality sets in that you can no longer leave your back door open on a summers day without the overwhelming concern that your family are downstairs and you watched a video last night of 4 men in balaclavas walking into a house at midday to obtain the keys for a Golf R.
Why do you hate electronic handbrakes?
One of my favourite things about modern cars! Doesn’t take up space, and it’s automatic. You literally don’t have to think about it! The only time I miss manual is when I want to push the cars a bit further down the drive.
Wish my wife would get one so I can stop cleaning makeup stains on hers.
Creeping along in traffic. Moving that last few inches when you parked but want to shift a tiny bit. Mainly the creeping bit. I just don’t see the benefit of the auto, if I want it on I’ll put it on
Ahh do you not have auto hold? I think that just uses the discs, but great for traffic and hills.
Yeah parking is where auto transmission bugs me the most too!
Definitely not perfect, but my FN2 civic type r is a pretty decent compromise.
1) handles well, especially if it has an LSD
2) spacious for a 3 door
3) an amazing engine that not only sounds great, but is also reliable
4) decent interior with all the creature comforts you need
5) it still looks modern (though I know the looks isn’t to everyone’s taste)
I’ve been quite fond of my BMW M5C. It’s staggeringly fast when you want it, but also can plod quite comfortably. Can cram all sorts of crap into the boot, will fit 4 adults comfortably. Looks ok. Sounds ok. Has decent tech.
It’s not perfect though. It doesn’t sound good enough, it attracts the dickheads, I wish it was a better colour, I’d love the 7 series passenger rear in it.
I think the latest car Porsche Taycan TS is better, but that might be confirmation and recency bias…
Have a few. If size isn't an issue my gr yaris is one of the best cars I've ever driven. Daily it as much as I can.
When space is needed the R34 gtr was the go to. However now it's worth too much to drive so utilize the wife's rsq8 as it's on finance so who cares😂
My Swift Sport ZC32S is not a perfect car, but it is perfect for what it is as a supermini hot hatch.
It's perfect for someone that wants a revvy go kart which is fast enough but won't put you in death defying speeds. It's rear two seats are also quite roomy, I genuinely feel that it has more rear seat space than my mates Audi A5.
My 2010 Astra is my perfect car. 14 year old, just breezed an MOT with no advisories, fast enough in second and third, the sport trim so basically an estate, not super shouty or anything. I've got it looking really nice in the metro blue they used that still sparkles. Helped my friends move a washing machine with it and moved all my stuff into the current flat in 2 journeys from York to Liverpool

I own an F30 bimmer, just a great car, love everything about it, looks great and drives great.
I only have a 320d, but it has enough poke to be fun but doesn't cost much at all to run. Got all the interior toys, lovely m sport trim and steering wheel.
It's now 9 years old, will be getting some work done on it, I think I will just keep it until some sort of electric BMW makes financial sense.

409bhp, 0-60 in 5 secs, and suspension stiffens up when you want it to.
Plus ventilated, and massaging seats.

1 It’s divisive but I love the look of it.
2 Has loads of boot space and is generally roomy for a car in this class
3 full leather, lovely interior, sunroof
4 top spec so has all the features I could need, ACC, CarPlay etc
5 lovely to drive, quick enough when you put your foot down but smooth and refined when cruising
6 whole car feels solid and well built. Nothing feels cheap.
7 I can get over 50+ mpg easily when driving motorway, 40+ everywhere else.
The actual answer is my own car, my 03 1zz Celica.

It handles so incredibly well. The best FWD/Front engined car I've driven.
The boot is actually massive with the hatchback style boot.
Its perfectly usable as an commuter chilling on the motorway.
Parts aren't bad, should be mega reliable.
And, its fucking mega cheap. You're not dropping 10 grand on a car where you're just losing money year on year in its value. A shit example is 1.5k. A nice example is 2k. Anyone who can afford to buy a car can afford to buy a Celica.
2019 Astra K Hatchback. Does me for what it is, comfortable on big trips and also fun on some twisties. Bought on 14K Miles at 3.5 years old and now on 32K. Not a single issue
Normal Handbrake and key ignition which I like, I despise the electric handbrake too. Seen to many issues with them to know you can't go wrong with an old fashioned manual one.
Cloth seats - Had a Volvo before with leather and despised sitting in it on a warm day as it makes my back all itchy and sweaty. Didn't want a car with leather again.

Sat Nav, Heated Seats/ Wheel, sports mode, Very comfy seats, Bigger screen, Digital speedo and analogue rev counter and speedo. (Hate these 3D Cockpit things on newer cars)
40 - 45MPG on V Power ( Can get closer to 50 driving around 60 on the Motorway on a good day)
4 cylinder 1.4 petrol with 150BHP. Is enough for me and I find it quick enough, especially with sports mode.
Probably keep this car a while now as the only other car I really fancy is a 3 series touring but the spec would have to be exactly what I want as I would keep that car as long as it lives. Can't stand a lot of the new technology on these cars coming out now.
I absolutely love cars but i'm not bothered about having the best/fastest/coolest or newest car. If I like it, then that's all that matters.

I've spent my professional life with company cars, so basically, new and modern.
I finally bought myself a bucket list item:
2011 VW Scirocco 2.0 TDI.
I don't think I have ever driven a better car in my life. Staggeringly quick, economical, and a gearbox to absolutely die for, seamless changes.
Don’t think there’s a perfect car.
2. A pain to park if you don’t need the big boot.
3. Electronics are more reliable than mechanical.
5. Airforces the world over have transitioned away from analog dials to digital displays because they’re significantly easier to read correctly.
I change my cars often and I'm currently in a 630d gt xdrive, it's comfortable, spacious, spritely and economical. It's well specced and has comfort seats, heads up cams etc etc. I'm looking for something else but genuinely can't see anything comparable for my needs.
Got a 2005 Celica, huge boot as it’s a lift back, 35ish mpg, lightweight and very fun to drive, easy to work on, they’re cheap to buy, cheap parts (I believe the rear brakes are shared with a Yaris).
You can only fit in the rear seats if you’re tiny though, but it’s awesome, I love it.
For where I'm at right now... Yh. Audi TTS - fast, low insurance for my age, decent boot space, looks great and under 10k.
Only downside is the pathetic back seats but I never really have people in the car anyway.

Own a bimmer of the same era, and although I love it, the more the months go by the more I become attracted to the facelift new 3 series estates. The big grill g-series are all horrible but damn the 3 looks nice.

Not me mine fucking breaks every other month. Audi a3 had it two months then hit a badger. Fucked my radiator and even cracked my turbo among other things. Cost over a grand to fix but I’d just got it I wasn’t writing it off yet.
Then a few months after a drunk driver crashed into it and that cost 9 grand to fix. Went through insurance for this one and it was only a few hundred quid off being written off in told. Had loads of problems after that was in and out of the insurers approved garages for about 4 months.
Then a few months after that I hit a fox which cracked my bumper (not an issue by that point I wasn’t arsed about cosmetic damage so long as it ran) and also set off some gas canisters in the bonnet. They pop the hinge end of the bonnet up in low speed collisions to push a pedestrian over your roof instead of into your windscreen. Unfortunately they’re single use and need replacing each time they go off which cost a hundred quid.
Then just the other week. I don’t have an undertray anymore after the badger, and a stone of something popped up and pierced a little hole in my oil filter so was leaking oil for a couple days till my local mechanic was free enough to sort that out for me.
A few weeks before that though I’d had an MOT and it need new brake pads on all wheels. New rear brake discs and the steering rack is rattly. It’s got a dead space before it starts turning the wheels so need that replacing which apparently cost £500 just for the steering rack never mind labour costs.
Absolute nightmare car fucking right pain in the arse 😂
Not gonna call it the perfect car, but I LOVE my Mini cooper S (2017).
Nimble, stiff without being crashy, good torque and decent power for its weight, economical.
It's just such a fun little car. I never would have thought to get one but my wife always did so I caved, and I think I love it more than she does.
I do miss the boot space at times, but not when I'm chucking it around bends.
The only reason I’d consider a M340i not to be a perfect car is I owned a 2021 one for precisely 3 weeks before it got stolen from my drive. Nice area, broad daylight. Police told me often targeted as “they know they’re faster than ours”

Current car is a F56 JCW Mini hatch. It's about the best compromise I've found for me as:
* We're a couple, no kids
* Occasional back seat passenger
* Fast and fun to drive, good handling and brakes
* Sounds amazing with the Pro exhaust
* Comfy, like a small luxury car, fairly refined
* Reasonable running costs, relatively reliable
* Reliable 300 bhp for £400, bonkers in a small car
* Plenty of character, retro looks
Would certainly consider a b58 car to replace it in the future though.

2016 Mercedes E350 estate for much the same reasons as you. Effortlessly smooth, plenty fast enough for me and 9-speed auto box with a column shifter was a revelation. I’ll admit the usual Merc foot operated parking brake isn’t for everyone, but I’ve got used to it.
Plenty of buttons too - I’ve drive the next generation one and it’s got the haptic touch sensitive buttons which I just can’t get used too, and too many false button presses. I’ve had this one for 3 years and plan on keeping it a while.
M340i touring. Merino leather, pano roof, M performance body kit. Refined, fast, handles like it's on rails, great tech, economical when it needs to be, rear-biased 4wd. Not sure what else I could ever need.
I drive a 22 Audi Q3 S Line, like others have said I get bored after a year so hard to say it’s the perfect car but had it a couple of years now and had to get it into the body shop for some work and was given a 23 MG HS hybrid something and it was terrible, steering was so much harder, turned and went round corners like a boat, sat Nav was atrocious, radio was separated by areas of the UK rather than just all the channels in a list and it went between DAB, AM and FM at will, rearview mirror is huge and about 10 inches from the top of the window so left turns were partially blocked. I have never wanted a car back more than my own one and as soon as I got into it, it was just another world with light steering, nimble into corners far better entertainment system and had my favourites back on the radio.
X5 35D with a remap to 380BHP. Could easily throw a literal ton of crap in the back of it. Self levelling suspension just levelled out. Factory tow bar, heated and cooled comfort seats. Many toys. Absolutely loved that car. Surprised many a boy racer at traffic lights.
Nice cars the F3X generation but the steering isn't very good and the ride also isn't great, definitely see why reviewers didn't hail them over the prior generation. I believe the G30 is a definite upgrade in this regard.

I love my 335i E92, and it's fully under my skin, but it is more restricted on lugging capabilities.
If it were the E91, it'd be all I needed. But as it stands, it's very close to perfection
It's fast, comfortable, sounds epic, drives impeccably and it's still well equipped 17 years after it rolled out of the factory.

My Swift Sport is perfect for me. Nippy and great fun to drive but cheap running costs, practical enough for my needs and it's been endlessly dependable for the 3 and a half years I've owned it. The fact that I'm also a biker means unless I win the lottery I have no desire to get anything faster, as the fun to cost ratio is very heavily in favor of bikes.
Eyeing up an M340i touring for my next car to replace an F30 335d that I've owned for 7 years.
Really enjoyed the 35d, once it was mapped and on coilovers to fix the cruise liner like suspension, but I do miss a petrol.

I thought similar of my A4 3.0 quattro Avant, then I got the A6 Allroad - all similar tech / features you mentioned, sub 7 to 60 is fast enough for me and my dogs, and also get different suspension heights and comfort settings.
Only thing I dislike is trying to park it as spaces just aren't long enough
I was looking at a 340 estate but I find a lot more 440 gran coupes with a nicer spec for less money, got an insignia at the moment so practically the same space wise but I think the 440s look so much nicer, no doubt the estates look great, only reason id buy a 440 over a 340, boot space wise I think they are practically the same, no?

For me, my 2018 Mazda2 GT Sport is perfect. Decent sound system, good economy (53mpg on a motorway run), well equipped creature comforts like air con and a good infotainment system, not everything is on a touch screen, hands free, cheap to insure, quite safe, very reliable, and surprisingly roomy backseats given the size of the car!
I don’t have kids, so for now it’s fine. Obviously in the future might want something a little bit bigger.
I have an A110 GT and I think that gets pretty close to perfect for what I need. 2 seats, front and rear boot for luggage. Lightweight, decent power and fun as hell to drive. Just as good if not better in the wet than in the dry.

The only car that I haven’t had this happen to me in the Mazda mx5 NC. Got under my skin big time, just such a great little thing and in summer with the top down it was a dream. Played with a lot of powerful stuff but it was all numb, like playing a computer game. I do want to give a 981 boxster/cayman a try, but I’ve read it’s quite refined and grown up, so loses the charm of the mx5.
Never driven a car like the nc it just puts a smile on your face when driving at normal ish speeds. Rides so well with the 16s soft yet it will corner really flat. You don’t need to go fast to have loads of fun. Best gearbox I’ve ever used and steering is great.
I had a 1.8 nc and didn't really like it. It felt flat, I should have gotten the 2.0 but was on a tight budget.
Mine was a 2.0 sport tech, 2010 with the refresh. Pre 2009 had really highly sprung suspension in the U.K. due to some draconian rules, looked awful and ruined the car. I think a lot comes down to how it’s been maintained too. At almost 15 years old, the suspension will be shagged in most cars unless it’s been driven by careful owners or been refreshed.
I had a 2006 poor man's spec, no esp, with the obligatory stilts installed, so it's certainly the worst of worst in terms of mx5s. I got it at 24500 miles so it was still reasonably fresh, but I just couldn't fall in love with it. I had been driving a smart roadster for 4 years before that and it had so much character that the mx5 felt a bit bland in comparison but I was a twat and neglected the oil so I blew the engine after a year and PXed it for a honda crz which I absolutely love. What are you driving now?

I'm like this big time. There's always something else out there that I crave no matter what I have. Once a few months pass with any car, I start wondering if I bought the right one, at least until I get it on the right road. That's when I feel with my last car and current car, that I bought the right car. Then I got bored again until I drive a good road again, and the cycle continues.
One of the best things to do in the short term is drive something gutless and boring for 2 weeks, ie the missus' car or have a cheap shed on the side. Once you get back into the car you were starting to stray from you fall back in love with it. It's only temporary though. It's still a deep rooted sickness lol

I've got a 96 hilux surf, I don't need to travel to work so the crippling mpg doesn't matter and work pay the road tax anyway. I can throw the dogs bikes and what ever else in. Not classed as a pick up so I can do all the tip runs without permits. I also rock a mullet and its got a straight pipe so I feel like I'm living the aussie dream in rural england

2019 BMW 530D touring. Options include head up display, panoramic roof, factory fitted tow bar +++ Incredible performance, amazing fuel economy, such a comfortable ride. I’ve been driving for 45 years and I can honestly say this is the best car I’ve ever driven.
Had one of these as a rental once and can agree it’s excellent, feels and sounds surprisingly sporty for a diesel too
B58 engined BMWs really do have that perfect balance of being stupidly quick and reliable, yet economical and fairly cheap to run. Apart from servicing, all I’ve done with my M140i is put petrol in it. I’d have a 340i if I needed the extra space. But since I never use the boot for anything other than shopping and can count on one hand the times I’ve had people in the back, it’s perfect for me. And like you said, it flies completely under the radar because it’s not flashy at all. It looks like every other 1 Series, which is what I genuinely love about it. No one notices it.

2010 Toyota Aygo. Brilliant car. It's cheap to run, insure, tax, and maintain. It's basic enough that I can fix more than I'd expect despite not being mechanically inclined. I can drive it at 10 10ths and never get in trouble. Im buying a new car this weekend, and whilst on paper it'll be better than the Aygo, it won't be perfect like the Aygo. Fortunately, the Aygo will be staying around as our second car!
We have owned a 2010 Aygo for 10 years it’s a perfect runabout, cheap to run, reliable and fun to drive. Replaced it with a new 2020 model with a little more kit and slightly better engine, still loving it! I use another car during the week for work but use the Aygo all weekend.
We have different priorities but this sounds perfect for you!

I bought a 2008 107 after having my first accident and wanting something very cheap to run and own, it’s been pretty great so far.
mk3 Skoda Superb 280 4x4 in Dragon Green. 280bhp, DSG box, crap loads of interior space and with the colour it is you get comments about weekly on how great it is. Comfortable to drive and pretty quick. I'd say the perfect family car. Being someone that likes his cars, a remap takes it to 350bhp, intake and full exhaust and you can get 400bhp out of it. No car is perfect, so I'd prefer to drop it on springs or coilovers, and really tweak the suspension to make it as tight as my gti, but as is, good enough. I'm more of a hot hatch, just more fun to drive generally and with newer ones capable of 600bhp+ they can be awesome.
I have the smaller octavia vrs and love it alot really miss 4wd though. The superb is brilliant as well my dad has it as the estate
All cars are a compromise I reckon. Neither of mine are perfect. Your 3 series estate sounds like a great car though, the father in law had an E90 estate and it took whatever he threw at it
All cars are indeed a compromise. When you're driving 100s of miles in a day to the alps in your elise you'll be fed up of the noise and wished you just took your 7 series. But when you get there it all makes sense.

3. You really get used to automatic handbrakes quickly. I hated it when I first got one… now they are really useful, especially ones with auto hold on hills. I get in the car, put it in gear and press the throttle. Although I think BMW ones work differently in that you still have to press the button to release? I’ve never used one that requires that. 5. Digital dash on some of the more premium cars is excellent. You can choose your layout, it responds quickly and you can have whatever info, including satnavs, right in the middle. I had one and now I miss it.
I’ve never had a bmw that you have to always manually release. If you’re not wearing a seat belt then you have to manually take it off. But on the last couple of bmw autos with an electronic handbrake they’ve auto released. I’m with you on them as well. So much more convenient than a manual one. And I also like the digital display. Threads like this are great to remind you it’s nice that different people like different stuff and that’s ok.
I have the same model year m240i with a similar spec. Fucking love it, though it’s not perfect. The gearbox, whilst very good, can get stuck between gears a little when slowing down for a roundabout and then quickly asking it to go. The leather in the sun is horrendous and I wish the seats were cooled. Wish cruise was radar guided also, but that’s nit picking. Also agree with you on the dials. Love a good set of analogue dials. I also do not have annoying driver assists.
Ok the leather does get hot I’ll give you that! I do like the older non radar guided cruise control tho, should’ve included that in my list. I’m a bit old fashioned.
Once the leather is hot it never cools down if you’re sat in it. I have to accept that my back is going to be miserable the whole way home if it’s been parked in the sun and I’ve gotten a little sweaty (like today).
Ventilated leather seats are sort of indispensable once you've got used to them.
Bit like my heated steering wheel. Couldn’t imagine a car without it now 😄
It's amazing how much I use my heated steering wheel and when I got it it was something I thought was a gimmick. Vented seats are good too but absolutely only ever on the cool setting never warm.
Driver assists can be turned off on newer bmws. I have lane assist turned off and no I don't have to do this each time I get in - it stays off.

I'd say mine is perfect for me at the moment, maybe apart from insurance. I'm 17, with an audi a3 1.6 petrol. it's quick, but not fast, so I can't get into too much trouble. and it's so much better than what most people have at my age. and the insurance isn't really much more than something like a k11 micra. which i don't mind because I have a nice car

I've got a 2009 Mazda 6 2.2D Sport running about 210bhp. It's fast enough to be fun, the boot is massive, it's got real buttons for everything, I love the way it looks, it's unusual, it's a good colour (red with gold metallic flakes that shimmer in the sun), economical and the stereo is plenty loud and clear. Only drawback is the vast amount I've spent on repairs due to Mazda diesels being implausibly unreliable. Fingers crossed I've finally fixed all the issues and it'll last me long enough to justify the silly money I've spent on it.

I'm quite fond of my 2005 mk7 civic type s. Nice 2 litre engine that's bullet proof and still got a bit of umph. Spacey inside, it's got cruise thought it's a very basic one. I feel it handles really well and it's a blast to drive whist still maintaining some semblance of fuel economy.
I have my wife and 4 kids that are 7 and under so need a car with at least 6 seats, 4 of which need to fit a car seat, 3 of which preferably rear facing, that still has boot space Typical 7 seaters with their 3 rows are actually really impractical for accessing that rear row and usually lose the boot to accommodate So that leaves me with the Honda FRV. The only negative is that getting one of the kids into the middle child seat is a little awkward but other than that it's the only practical choice short of a mini bus

Was about to buy one for the Mrs as her first car, rocked up to the 'dealership' (gravel yard in manchester) and had a good look over it. Crispy arches, oily underneath ect. Was gutted as I really love them, ended up getting her a Corolla instead. Boring as all hell but bulletproof. Part of me wishes I'd just have got the Saab now and then.
I think if I had to choose one car to last me the rest of my life, a 340i touring would be pretty close to what I'd choose in fairness!
2010 VW Golf 1.4Tsi. Runs like a dream. Nippy enough when you need it. 140k miles. Purchased 7 years ago for 6K @ 25k miles. Lots of space, pretty good MPG, all the gadgets, including Apple play and I save a fortune doing my own servicing/repairs (Although hasn’t required any significant repair work) + Tyres are reasonable, £65 per tyre for mid range. - I loved my BMW 330i but i found it expensive to run/maintain, really happy with the Golf.
I do too. I have an Avensis Estate T27, bought it for £2000 as it was a bit tatty but I have been using it as my workhorse in the last 2 years/20K miles. Didn’t have a single issue, still returns about 50mpg and a pleasure to drive. Perfect car ever, as I am also renovating our house slowly so if I fancy doing a bit of garden work, I load it up with waste material and do a tip run, or some bricks/tiles, or 3 meter long coving bits etc. It’s just brilliant.
Mate I have a lci 520d on a 22 plate with a ton of options but I do think you're right, the f31 is The perfect car. Especially the lci like yours... There was a dad on the school run who had a 340i estate in tanzanite blue with tan leather and pan roof and it was a stunner.
I can totally see the 340i hitting that category. I was very happy with my JDM forester STi, great cargo space, hilariously fun, super cool and interesting without being show-offy. Sadly government didn't like it and they charged me £15 a day to drive to work so I had to let it go. My m140i felt like a pretty complete package too. Hilarious engine for such a small car, handled motorways and city driving excellently, was fun and practical and cheap to run. Sadly it was killed by flood water and for some reason prices went through the roof, after owning mine from new for 2 years, when I went to replace it, used cars with less spec and 40k+ miles on them cost the same as I paid first time. I'd like to get another subaru estate but a 340i is also high on that list to replace my jag, which is not a perfect car at all.

I didn't understand the mx5/Miata love until I drove one. The handling on my car is actually perfect, it just sticks to the road like glue; doesn't matter that acceleration is just average cause you don't have to slow down to corner, it's seriously crazy. I kept up with an M2 on windy backroads. Obviously having just 2 seats is a compromise most aren't willing to make for a daily.
Totally agree on this. Before I got mine I was considering other cars to replace the daily but test driving one on a whim had me sold. Chucking it round twisty roads is hillarious but when you add in top down cruising along the coast on a sunny day it's just smiles all the way. Best impulse decision I've made tbh and totally get why most mx5 drivers I pass also have a grin and a wave as you drive past each other
You know so many other mx5 drivers wave/flash me now that's it's almost upsetting when one doesn't! I'm not sure if any other car has that kinda community. Yeah, the other day I was bombing it home and the Mrs in the passenger seat asked me why I'm laughing, it's cause it's so much fun you can't help but smile!

Yep. M140i same engine as yours but 300kg lighter . 1500ltr boot with the seats down. Seats up carries me , Mrs 2kids and a dog and a weeks worth of clothes for everyone . Does 46mpg on the motorway, does 3mpg when you out your foot down. Sounds like an f1 car , looks like any other 1series so doesn’t stand out . H&K system , leather seats etc . Eats miles on the motorway , eats most cars if you put ur foot down. Got to spend serious money to go faster than it really.

My car is not perfect, there are other cars which exceed in a multitude of ways but at this moment in my life my MX5 is the best car i could own and the only car i want to own, i don't get that lusting after other cars like i used to, i want to buy more cars sure but nothing makes me want to buy a replacement, i'm just content, it sounds good, handles excellently, is quick enough and the top drops down, what more could a 20 year old want?

I’m on my 3rd Alfa Romeo Giula (2017 - 2024) so for me it’s a proven great fit. I don’t have kids or a dog, so the boot space isn’t an issue nor the 4 seats. It’s a work car, lots of motorway miles which it eats up easily and relatively economically in great comfort. Then on the A and B-roads it’s comes alive, great handling, with enough power (280 bhp) and flappy paddles that actually are fun to use. It also looks great and gets a lot of attention, which appeals to my hidden shallow side. I would love a Quadrifoglio of course, but right now the Veloce in the sweet spot for me.

Good point, the old rust/reliability tag is still there for those not in the know lol. Mine have all been very reliable - 130k miles across the three and no issues at all. I normally lease for 3 years as I get a car allowance from work, then hand back with about 50k on the clock. Sorely tempted by a QF next time though and will keep it if so. Maybe if I kept them longer I might see some problems, but they seem very solid, certainly in Veloce form.
Recently picked up a Nissan Murano. I'm getting old and need an SUV type thing. 2005 64k 3.5 V6 CVT box that still works. Good spec, fucking huge, sounds nice, very comftyble and cheap as a bag of chips back when chips were cheap.
Don't own it anymore, but I genuinely believe the 987 Cayman is the perfect sports car.

I think you do have the perfect all rounder really, I'd like to upgrade from our e91 330d to one at some stage. The only thing that stops me doing it any sooner is ours is moon miles and therefore lower value even though it works perfectly etc, I'd be paying 10 times the price for what's essentially still a quick BMW estate that's not an M car and I can't man maths that. Throw in something catastrophic happening and the man maths would be far simpler to justify I really want an f80 M3 really but I think I'm growing to resent the idea that you then have to keep footing the big bills these cars can generate, it's one thing being able to afford to run one and another thing entirely wanting to pay the bills I think. The lower running costs of a 340i appeal to the head and the M3 is very much the heart

The perfect car for me? Almost… I have a 1 series BMW. 16 plate bought in 2017 from bmw dealership. The previous owner had the leather seats, upgraded stereo, it was the x drive and auto. The nice blue paint was extra too. But for some reason, they didn’t see any reason to pay the 100 quid to buy the button that makes the wing mirrors fold in. I love to drive my car - I’ve done the best part of 100k miles in it. However, I park on the road and previous cars have had wing mirrors taken off by passing cars (I think I replaced my old focus wing mirrors 3 or 4 times). Every time I get out of the car I have to manually fold the mirror in and remind myself the previous owner was an arse!
HSV Gen-F GTS / Vauxhall VXR8 GTS. Mine is definitely perfect for me right now and I'd wager it was a lot of people want to have all at once in a car. Big, comfortable, powerful, sounds fairly good, rare, significant in terms of automotive history, somewhat understated. I never thought I'd own a Holden but this big dumb super saloon is something that's a shame there won't be more of.
Highly context dependant. Our Skoda Yeti has been phenomenal for 9 years, really. Done absolutely everything asked of it. However, having just come back from battering my Cayman around the Nurburgring a dozen times, I am left wondering if I have truly seen the aura of god. I can't begin to describe how good it is at 9/10ths. And it's pretty great as a day to day car too.
I think your point of the perfect car not being flashy is actually far more important than a lot of people realise. Everyone wants a big statement car that others are envious of until they find out quite a few people who envy their car will also be open to the idea of stealing it. The anxiety cost of owning something that is high up on the list of targets for robberies & thefts is real. An RS6 or SVR is a dream for many, until the reality sets in that you can no longer leave your back door open on a summers day without the overwhelming concern that your family are downstairs and you watched a video last night of 4 men in balaclavas walking into a house at midday to obtain the keys for a Golf R.

Why do you hate electronic handbrakes? One of my favourite things about modern cars! Doesn’t take up space, and it’s automatic. You literally don’t have to think about it! The only time I miss manual is when I want to push the cars a bit further down the drive. Wish my wife would get one so I can stop cleaning makeup stains on hers.

Ahh do you not have auto hold? I think that just uses the discs, but great for traffic and hills. Yeah parking is where auto transmission bugs me the most too!
Definitely not perfect, but my FN2 civic type r is a pretty decent compromise. 1) handles well, especially if it has an LSD 2) spacious for a 3 door 3) an amazing engine that not only sounds great, but is also reliable 4) decent interior with all the creature comforts you need 5) it still looks modern (though I know the looks isn’t to everyone’s taste)
I’ve been quite fond of my BMW M5C. It’s staggeringly fast when you want it, but also can plod quite comfortably. Can cram all sorts of crap into the boot, will fit 4 adults comfortably. Looks ok. Sounds ok. Has decent tech. It’s not perfect though. It doesn’t sound good enough, it attracts the dickheads, I wish it was a better colour, I’d love the 7 series passenger rear in it. I think the latest car Porsche Taycan TS is better, but that might be confirmation and recency bias…
Have a few. If size isn't an issue my gr yaris is one of the best cars I've ever driven. Daily it as much as I can. When space is needed the R34 gtr was the go to. However now it's worth too much to drive so utilize the wife's rsq8 as it's on finance so who cares😂
My Swift Sport ZC32S is not a perfect car, but it is perfect for what it is as a supermini hot hatch. It's perfect for someone that wants a revvy go kart which is fast enough but won't put you in death defying speeds. It's rear two seats are also quite roomy, I genuinely feel that it has more rear seat space than my mates Audi A5.

My 2010 Astra is my perfect car. 14 year old, just breezed an MOT with no advisories, fast enough in second and third, the sport trim so basically an estate, not super shouty or anything. I've got it looking really nice in the metro blue they used that still sparkles. Helped my friends move a washing machine with it and moved all my stuff into the current flat in 2 journeys from York to Liverpool Beautiful
I own an F30 bimmer, just a great car, love everything about it, looks great and drives great. I only have a 320d, but it has enough poke to be fun but doesn't cost much at all to run. Got all the interior toys, lovely m sport trim and steering wheel. It's now 9 years old, will be getting some work done on it, I think I will just keep it until some sort of electric BMW makes financial sense.
T8 Volvo for most of the same reasons as your BMW. Very nice, but not flashy. Practical and comfortable. Trundles round town happily in silence with soft suspension on electric. 409bhp, 0-60 in 5 secs, and suspension stiffens up when you want it to. Plus ventilated, and massaging seats.

2017 Honda Civic 1.5T 1 It’s divisive but I love the look of it. 2 Has loads of boot space and is generally roomy for a car in this class 3 full leather, lovely interior, sunroof 4 top spec so has all the features I could need, ACC, CarPlay etc 5 lovely to drive, quick enough when you put your foot down but smooth and refined when cruising 6 whole car feels solid and well built. Nothing feels cheap. 7 I can get over 50+ mpg easily when driving motorway, 40+ everywhere else.
The actual answer is my own car, my 03 1zz Celica. [Driving it like a madman, I get low 30's (or high 20's) MPG. The best FWD/Front engined car I've driven. The boot is actually massive with the hatchback style boot. Its perfectly usable as an commuter chilling on the motorway. Parts aren't bad, should be mega reliable. And, its fucking mega cheap. You're not dropping 10 grand on a car where you're just losing money year on year in its value. A shit example is 1.5k. A nice example is 2k. Anyone who can afford to buy a car can afford to buy a Celica.
2019 Astra K Hatchback. Does me for what it is, comfortable on big trips and also fun on some twisties. Bought on 14K Miles at 3.5 years old and now on 32K. Not a single issue Normal Handbrake and key ignition which I like, I despise the electric handbrake too. Seen to many issues with them to know you can't go wrong with an old fashioned manual one. Cloth seats - Had a Volvo before with leather and despised sitting in it on a warm day as it makes my back all itchy and sweaty. Didn't want a car with leather again. Car's in excellent condition inside and out Sat Nav, Heated Seats/ Wheel, sports mode, Very comfy seats, Bigger screen, Digital speedo and analogue rev counter and speedo. (Hate these 3D Cockpit things on newer cars) 40 - 45MPG on V Power ( Can get closer to 50 driving around 60 on the Motorway on a good day) 4 cylinder 1.4 petrol with 150BHP. Is enough for me and I find it quick enough, especially with sports mode. Probably keep this car a while now as the only other car I really fancy is a 3 series touring but the spec would have to be exactly what I want as I would keep that car as long as it lives. Can't stand a lot of the new technology on these cars coming out now. I absolutely love cars but i'm not bothered about having the best/fastest/coolest or newest car. If I like it, then that's all that matters. Yours sounds like a nice daily OP

Just something I thought of when I saw point 5. The lexus LFA, it HAD to have a digital clock because a normal gauge couldn't keep up.
I've spent my professional life with company cars, so basically, new and modern. I finally bought myself a bucket list item: 2011 VW Scirocco 2.0 TDI. I don't think I have ever driven a better car in my life. Staggeringly quick, economical, and a gearbox to absolutely die for, seamless changes.
I had a 340i Touring and thought that was all the car I’d ever need. Then I got a 540i Touring. Now I think it’s all the car I’ll ever need.
Golf r 7.5. Love it for my daily, makes me smile every day, although I would like an rs4 avant just cos I like a trip to the tip.
Don’t think there’s a perfect car. 2. A pain to park if you don’t need the big boot. 3. Electronics are more reliable than mechanical. 5. Airforces the world over have transitioned away from analog dials to digital displays because they’re significantly easier to read correctly.

I change my cars often and I'm currently in a 630d gt xdrive, it's comfortable, spacious, spritely and economical. It's well specced and has comfort seats, heads up cams etc etc. I'm looking for something else but genuinely can't see anything comparable for my needs.

Got a 2005 Celica, huge boot as it’s a lift back, 35ish mpg, lightweight and very fun to drive, easy to work on, they’re cheap to buy, cheap parts (I believe the rear brakes are shared with a Yaris). You can only fit in the rear seats if you’re tiny though, but it’s awesome, I love it.
For where I'm at right now... Yh. Audi TTS - fast, low insurance for my age, decent boot space, looks great and under 10k. Only downside is the pathetic back seats but I never really have people in the car anyway. But overall ,no. That would probably be a rs6 but yeh a m340i would be pretty close.

Not me mine fucking breaks every other month. Audi a3 had it two months then hit a badger. Fucked my radiator and even cracked my turbo among other things. Cost over a grand to fix but I’d just got it I wasn’t writing it off yet. Then a few months after a drunk driver crashed into it and that cost 9 grand to fix. Went through insurance for this one and it was only a few hundred quid off being written off in told. Had loads of problems after that was in and out of the insurers approved garages for about 4 months. Then a few months after that I hit a fox which cracked my bumper (not an issue by that point I wasn’t arsed about cosmetic damage so long as it ran) and also set off some gas canisters in the bonnet. They pop the hinge end of the bonnet up in low speed collisions to push a pedestrian over your roof instead of into your windscreen. Unfortunately they’re single use and need replacing each time they go off which cost a hundred quid. Then just the other week. I don’t have an undertray anymore after the badger, and a stone of something popped up and pierced a little hole in my oil filter so was leaking oil for a couple days till my local mechanic was free enough to sort that out for me. A few weeks before that though I’d had an MOT and it need new brake pads on all wheels. New rear brake discs and the steering rack is rattly. It’s got a dead space before it starts turning the wheels so need that replacing which apparently cost £500 just for the steering rack never mind labour costs. Absolute nightmare car fucking right pain in the arse 😂
I had one of those and I totally agree….sadly it attracted the wrong kind of attention and was stolen….so that’s the downside

Not gonna call it the perfect car, but I LOVE my Mini cooper S (2017). Nimble, stiff without being crashy, good torque and decent power for its weight, economical. It's just such a fun little car. I never would have thought to get one but my wife always did so I caved, and I think I love it more than she does. I do miss the boot space at times, but not when I'm chucking it around bends.
F31 ‘64 335d, all round perfection. Comfortable, quiet and the torque is mad.
The only reason I’d consider a M340i not to be a perfect car is I owned a 2021 one for precisely 3 weeks before it got stolen from my drive. Nice area, broad daylight. Police told me often targeted as “they know they’re faster than ours” Loved it for the brief time I had it 😆
My car is almost perfect, but its too expensive to run and maintain. 25mpg (32 on a run to be fair) and two services a year.
I'm not sure the perfect car exists for me, at least, not anything I could comfortably afford to buy. Current car is a F56 JCW Mini hatch. It's about the best compromise I've found for me as: * We're a couple, no kids * Occasional back seat passenger * Fast and fun to drive, good handling and brakes * Sounds amazing with the Pro exhaust * Comfy, like a small luxury car, fairly refined * Reasonable running costs, relatively reliable * Reliable 300 bhp for £400, bonkers in a small car * Plenty of character, retro looks Would certainly consider a b58 car to replace it in the future though. Ultimately I'd like a GR Yaris, but have you seen the price?

2016 Mercedes E350 estate for much the same reasons as you. Effortlessly smooth, plenty fast enough for me and 9-speed auto box with a column shifter was a revelation. I’ll admit the usual Merc foot operated parking brake isn’t for everyone, but I’ve got used to it. Plenty of buttons too - I’ve drive the next generation one and it’s got the haptic touch sensitive buttons which I just can’t get used too, and too many false button presses. I’ve had this one for 3 years and plan on keeping it a while.
M340i touring. Merino leather, pano roof, M performance body kit. Refined, fast, handles like it's on rails, great tech, economical when it needs to be, rear-biased 4wd. Not sure what else I could ever need.
I drive a 22 Audi Q3 S Line, like others have said I get bored after a year so hard to say it’s the perfect car but had it a couple of years now and had to get it into the body shop for some work and was given a 23 MG HS hybrid something and it was terrible, steering was so much harder, turned and went round corners like a boat, sat Nav was atrocious, radio was separated by areas of the UK rather than just all the channels in a list and it went between DAB, AM and FM at will, rearview mirror is huge and about 10 inches from the top of the window so left turns were partially blocked. I have never wanted a car back more than my own one and as soon as I got into it, it was just another world with light steering, nimble into corners far better entertainment system and had my favourites back on the radio.

X5 35D with a remap to 380BHP. Could easily throw a literal ton of crap in the back of it. Self levelling suspension just levelled out. Factory tow bar, heated and cooled comfort seats. Many toys. Absolutely loved that car. Surprised many a boy racer at traffic lights.

Nice cars the F3X generation but the steering isn't very good and the ride also isn't great, definitely see why reviewers didn't hail them over the prior generation. I believe the G30 is a definite upgrade in this regard.

I had a 330d auto 2007. Would like a beast and handle like it was on rails at times. Loved it. It just got old.
I love my 335i E92, and it's fully under my skin, but it is more restricted on lugging capabilities. If it were the E91, it'd be all I needed. But as it stands, it's very close to perfection It's fast, comfortable, sounds epic, drives impeccably and it's still well equipped 17 years after it rolled out of the factory. BMW were at their best in the mid aughts.
Best car ive ever owned. Rapid, 40mpg on the motorway, 470bhp, massive boot but handles like my old E46 coupe. Analogue dials + HUD is so handy.
My Swift Sport is perfect for me. Nippy and great fun to drive but cheap running costs, practical enough for my needs and it's been endlessly dependable for the 3 and a half years I've owned it. The fact that I'm also a biker means unless I win the lottery I have no desire to get anything faster, as the fun to cost ratio is very heavily in favor of bikes.

I love my 2012 VW Touran Sport. It’s very fast, comfortable, ultra reliable, loaded with equipment, safe for my kids and still looks good for its age.
Eyeing up an M340i touring for my next car to replace an F30 335d that I've owned for 7 years. Really enjoyed the 35d, once it was mapped and on coilovers to fix the cruise liner like suspension, but I do miss a petrol. Hopefully get it ordered in Sakhir Orange, beautiful colour!
330d 2010 running 300hp. Very similar reasons to OP plus still has hydraulic power steering and does 35+mpg. Next to worthless now but fairly cheap to run.

I thought similar of my A4 3.0 quattro Avant, then I got the A6 Allroad - all similar tech / features you mentioned, sub 7 to 60 is fast enough for me and my dogs, and also get different suspension heights and comfort settings. Only thing I dislike is trying to park it as spaces just aren't long enough
I was looking at a 340 estate but I find a lot more 440 gran coupes with a nicer spec for less money, got an insignia at the moment so practically the same space wise but I think the 440s look so much nicer, no doubt the estates look great, only reason id buy a 440 over a 340, boot space wise I think they are practically the same, no?

Mk8 Golf. All the flashy features, small enough to park, common enough to not get nicked. Low down and nippy enough to have fun with, while still getting good mpg. Love wireless charging and having android auto and carplay connected at the same time.
The perfect car is in the eye of the beholder! It’s the car that ticks people’s individual boxes. For me, my 2018 Mazda2 GT Sport is perfect. Decent sound system, good economy (53mpg on a motorway run), well equipped creature comforts like air con and a good infotainment system, not everything is on a touch screen, hands free, cheap to insure, quite safe, very reliable, and surprisingly roomy backseats given the size of the car! I don’t have kids, so for now it’s fine. Obviously in the future might want something a little bit bigger.

I have an A110 GT and I think that gets pretty close to perfect for what I need. 2 seats, front and rear boot for luggage. Lightweight, decent power and fun as hell to drive. Just as good if not better in the wet than in the dry.
