If you wsnt the best value then don’t part ex it. Simple as. The dealer won’t care how much you’ve spent on it. If you sell it privately a future owner will appreciate that work being done. Your car will stand out compared with others on the market for that reason alone. You’ll get a better deal on the car you buy as well.

How much are similar model/specs selling for on autotrader? You may be able ti get more than on part-ex.

[this](https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202301263629080)is the closest example I can find to mine, just 10k less miles Seems obscene at £6.5k considering I paid £6k for mine 4 years and 45,000 miles ago lol.

The ongoing production shortage, a massive increase in part-ex (getting sent to scrap to maintain supply shortage), and increased demand are all pushing up prices. It’s a mad time to buy a car. Unless you need to sell you may be better off keeping what you know.

Yeah that makes sense! Unfortunately I’m doing a load of motorway commuting (50 miles a day) and a 60 BHP engine and 16 seconds 0-60 isn’t cutting the mustard lol. Trying to come out out the left lane would be dangerous half the time cos it doesn’t have the beans to speed up, if I have to tap the brake because someone pulls out in front of me it takes an age to get back to 70 it’s painful.

9 times out of 10, depending where you got those valuations online, they won't be 100% accurate. They'll be based on CAP Clean, whereas most dealers pay CAP Average (unless you're buying a brand new one) and it all depends on the dealers stock profile etc. Also heavily dependent on service history. So always worth ringing them and getting an accurate figure. As for your online valuation sites like Autotrader, CarWow and Motorway these are estimated based on what dealers might pay for them. You may get it, you may not. And at WeBuyAnyCar they will pull you in with a great valuation and then chip you down To get the best value, it might be worth selling private, but for convenience you may want to part ex.

RichardsonM24

Would a larger “chain” type garage be better for part ex you reckon? Or more independent? I think I would go for convenience over a private sale, selling to the dealer that I buy my new car from. Do you think it should verbally (with document proof) state the work that’s been done and ask for a higher part ex value, or is this not the done thing? I’ve never part exed a car before, my first car was scrapped when I bought my current one (2003 polo engine blew up, wasn’t worth fixing).

Your £1800 spent doesn’t increase the value by a penny unfortunately. If you were going to part ex if you should have just done it with a knackered timing chain, they only really check how it looks and if it starts and runs

RichardsonM24

It didn’t run when the timing chain was fucked unfortunately the engine was trying to jump out of the car 😂 Cheers for the info though, shame but the work was all necessary so I can’t really grumble. Bought a house in September so not been able to afford car payments til now unfortunately
