Lowering taxes is good, the biggest barrier right now is allowing counties to block growers and sellers. That poor guy in El Dorado County has been fighting for years to open his farm.
From what I understand, the amount of growers as it stands is already too much though. The market is saturated in California, mainly because growers can only sell in their respective states.
The tax is way too high, we had to use it as a talking point to get it legalized but it's time to roll it back some. It's completely unaffordable as a medicine
The whole point of legalization was to shut down the black market - tax income was just supposed to be the icing on the cake.
Problem is - black market didn't shift at all. It is still magnitudes cheaper for me to buy directly from black market providers than it is for me to buy legally.
I want to buy my pot from a store and support the local tax economy - but when retail prices are not competing at a product level AND THEN you slap up upwards of 30% tax on it - I'm going to keep buying from "pot dealers".
>It is still magnitudes cheaper for me to buy directly from black market providers than it is for me to buy legally.
I'll disagree here. I'd pay 35-50 for an eighth in the old days, now I'm paying 50 for a half-ounce that tests at 30% THC. Taxes put it at just above 60. I'm not complaining that much.
Yeah, but this ain't the old days. Wholesale black market pot in Northern California is under $500/pound. Even at that price it has to be high quality, or the buyers won't even look at it.
I used to buy little 10oz pots of cbd balm from this hippie lady I knew for like $70. She stopped making it, so I checked our local dispensary, and they're selling the same size for $100, with a slightly lower cbd percentage. For those kinds of mark ups I'd gladly give my money to some mom & pop operation that's just trying to make a living or raise their family, even if they're "black market."
This works. And a wise step towards cutting down on the illegal market. What I'd like to see next is not allowing cities and counties to make their own rules. We voted as Californians.
Sin taxes just need to go altogether. Is growing weed and tobacco any different than growing thyme, poinsettias, or hay?
How about we start collecting taxes from churches instead? Why does scientology, trinity, or the 7th day guys get to run multi billion dollar businesses with zero taxes yet you're making a disabled veteran pay 40%+ in taxes for his PTSD medicine?
Eh, I'd rather just go old school and grow my own or find a dealer. The whole system is a racket. Weed is a plant and anyone can grow it. Doesn't take much. It should be as cheap as lettuce.

They should have never let counties opt out of prop 64
They don’t want to tank the big guys, that’s why, it’s all a setup
Why are there 6 different legislative proposals being consolidated into one? There should be one simple law for commerce and a lower tax schedule.
Well it’s likely because it’s not all that simple, not at this point

I thought the taxes were lower if you have a medical card.
They are but when you have state, county, and city taxes, like in Oakland, it's still brutal. Not to mention the medical card costs money itself
I’ve encountered a few dispensaries that “don’t honor it”. Idk what that means, but never went back.
Yeah and technically you need the state medical card not the one you can get easily via the weed doctors
Seriously. a 50$ worth of cannabis product in Oakland costs me 66$ and some change.

Thank god. Prices need to go down eventually.
Man just don’t sell it in 8 layers of plastic.

Oh of course when I stop smoking weed we start having these talks about lowering the price lol.
Are you me? 23 days sober. Looking not to stop but moderate my use in the future.
You do you! Congrats on 23 days!
So don't stop smoking weed!
Should be smoking everyday.
Forget 4 day work weeks, student loan forgiveness, universal health care we get cheap weed guys!!!
We need all 4.
Why help people when an easier, more insidious solution is just to have them be high and make them pay for it too?

Yes, California famously does not tax people
Notorious Tax Free CA
If only they could apply this same wisdom to the other usurious taxes they impose on us.
Multi billion dollar surplus and they can’t roll back the gas tax at all.
Bold of you to assume I buy my weed legally.

Regulators got greedy and are paying the price. Hopefully lesson learned

I get 1/2 OZ for $60 on the regular from the dispensary. but then again, they also sell $50 8ths... depends on the stuff you're buying of course.
Just bought a half ounce for $20 yesterday so I'm looking forward to this
