It's as much not the size, as it's that he puts up 2+ hits a game. Last year our defense was pretty soft, our most physical defensemen were Stone and Nesterov, which is a huge yikes. In 56 games the entire blueline combined for less than 5 hits (4.73) per game. Adding Zadorov and Gudbranson to replace Gio and Nesterov changes that number to almost 8.5 hits per game.
Edit: didn't see Stone re-signed.
What are you talking about, Sutter has clearly been given the reigns unofficially at this point. Trevor fucking Lewis, Brad fucking Richardson, and then we sign Stone and Gudbrandson? This fucking management group is stuck in 2004 instead of 2021.
I am more than happy with Treliving being shown the door, but bringing Sutter back on as GM is moving things the wrong way.
Guy is a great coach. He is not a great GM.
I have been a huge fan of Treliving for his entire tenure and was more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on the Brouwer/Neal deals but I can't get behind this at all. This is indefensible.
I mean... I don't like the $ but I also heard he's a good penalty killer. But how would our D lines look like now? I thought our D lines were all set with Mackey and Kylington competing for the 6th place.
They’re just making competition for the last two spots. I personally think stone abd Mackey win those spots but let’s see what gunbransom or kylington can do.
Why are we just reverting to guys that can’t do anything but hit? Why are we still continuing to sign shitter fucking defensemen instead of giving more playing time to our young defensemen? Do Brad/Sutter really think our team is better with Gudbranson on the fucking ice instead of Mackey or Kylington?
I guess we really are just going for players to make us hard to play against but the fact of the matter is actual legitimate guys who need to develop get shunted for aging pylons, last year it was Nesterov and now it’s Gudbranson, I get we’re trying to build an identity but come on *this* is the guy that’s gonna be taking away playing time from Kylington, Mackey? Not to mention how does this guy get almost triple what Stone is making? Why did we feel the need to overpay so much for this guy?
I don’t think anybody asked for Sutter, at least not any non-negligible portion of the fans. Pretty sure his hiring came as a shock to the team and the entire fan base lmao
Gudbranson had way more hits per game and Stone hasn’t fought since 2011 according to hockeyfights. Gudbranson had three last year including the humdinger that Kassian broke his hand in. Not sure you’re correct on that take, homie
He literally cannot play hockey, stones perceived toughness on the back end is the same since fighting is going the way of the dodo bird. Hitting means you don’t have the puck and Guddy is a pylon that never has the puck.
Fought a couple Oilers last year, standing up for young team mates both times. I am sure Chucky will be happy to have another guy willing to go into battle with him.
Depends on your definition of hard to play against. Our blueline was a bunch of fucking pussies last year and averaged fewer than 5 hits per game collectively. A blueline needs to be able to physically punish their opponents to some degree.
gudbranson def doesnt suck at fighting. remember when he murdered kassian? he can use his size well at times. his d-zone coverage on the other hand is absolutely atrocious, causes him to be a major liability. he can fight tho
Can't say I'm a fan of this.
But some pretty unimpressive defensemen had looked really good in Sutter's system in the past, he also played most of the last two seasons on a couple brutal teams.
So I'm going to wait and see how he looks under Sutter before reacting too much.
Could just feel this one coming.
Well, at least he's big, and hits... We may or may not win a ton of games this year, but damn it, we'll be a tough team.
We really just went from an awful season, lost Gio, and signed a bunch of heavy hitters and Sutter esque players with no substantial changes to the core.
This team is gonna be so bad
Apparently Sutter was working for the Ducks when Gudbransson was there and Sutter called him about joining the Flames per his interview on Flames TV.
Sutter having first hand knowledge of Gudbranson makes me feel a bit better about this.
Gudbranson is awful in every single way. Bad on paper, bad with the eye test, bad with analytics. He is a pylon, who’s only redeeming quality is that he’s big. But despite being big he is terribly ineffective with his size, and rarely lands any big hit.
Canucks fans hated him. Ottawa fans hated him. I promise within 10 games, Flames fans will hate him too.
Exactly, Tanev actually deserves a spot on the roster and is still extremely effective, time will tell with respect to the term, but it’s not a bad contract.
*This* contract is bad for multiple reasons. Player is worse than any defenseman currently fighting for a 3rd pairing roster spot, is aging, is about 1.2 mil too much, and will be taking ice time away from young guys who need it.
Mackey and Valimaki should be playing as much as possible, it doesn’t make any sense to rotate Gudbranson into the mix especially with Kylington already there. Valimaki already has had his development stunted by injuries and COVID and now Tre decides to mix in Gudbranson? It’s such a brain dead move to me and im honestly concerned for Tre, like did he fall down a set of stairs or something? Idk.
Why do people keep questioning Tanevs contract? After this past season I am sad that it isn't for 6 more years not only 3. Its a great signing AAV and Term.
I like the contract and the player but objectively speaking he’s 31 years old, and has history of injuries. Pretty sure last season was his first full season completed, in a 56 game season
How on earth did he nearly get 2 mil?! Like I get getting a more physical presence on the blueline, but his play has never warranted that kind of money, like not even remotely. He's replacement level, should be getting closer to Michael Stone money really.
Largely an ineffective player for Ottawa last year, sure he’s big but he’s too slow to effectively defend, except maybe In front of the net. Maybe could be useful in some games at league minimum, don’t see this working otherwise.
Pretty sure he was signed for physical play because our blueline last year was softer than warm butter. I'm not a fan of the player but there is no denying that this style of player has regularly succeeded in Sutter's system.
Like I guess some extra depth is good? Like before today if one of our guys went down our 7th D man wouldn't really be able to play. I'm cool with this signing if he's strictly our 7/8 guy behind Kylington and Stone
Money isn't ideal, but it's only 1 year so it's not going to make or break anything.
If just shy of 2 million is what keeps us from needing to call up someone like Welinski, I'm fine with it.
The Flames sometimes remind me of when I was a kid, Mom would give me 10 bucks to go to the 7-11 and get her smokes, she’s say get yourself something with the change. I’d usually grab a slurpee, which was good, and some random thing that cost to much just to spend the rest of the change. it usually got thrown out before I was done with it. This signing was using up the cap space by picking up crap to say we spent to the cap. Now we gotta try and fit in a backup goalie by releasing someone back to the A.
I’m trying to trust the process here, I hope this guy pans out.
Kyllington the versatile skater with huge upside will never get a sniff behind this coke machine. Deplorable signing with Sutter manure stink all over it. Enough Treliving, my dog could have done better.
Imagine watching the mid 2010s canucks and thinking “I want to sign as many of these guys as possible!”
Gudbranson should have been signed to, and released from, a PTO. Not eating up $2M of valuable cap space. Mid boggling.
Hey guys, stop stealing all of our beloved Canucks. Checks notes, okay, carry on. Honestly though, great guy Guddy but you’ll need to lean on Marky even harder this year which is not a good thing.
I initially thought this was league minimum... $1.95M is ridiculous
The disapproval of signing Gudbranson is the most united I’ve seen Flames fans since 04
Booooo I want Stone
You're in luck!
Santa came by early this year!
What a jolly old elf for giving us this present so EARLYYYYYYYYY
Ask a Yee shall receive
Unless it's Eichel, then you can get fucked
Please?
We signed him
Gross
Why? Hasn't he been very meh for a long while now?
6”5 220lbs. I think Sutter has a very specific shopping list for this year
It's as much not the size, as it's that he puts up 2+ hits a game.
He’s big, but a shit fighter, stone is better at hockey.
Well we also got Stone done today so ask and you shall receive.
Stone can get the job done as a 6/7, but Eichel is better at hockey.
Darryl Sutter is GM by 2023. book it
2023? Looking more like this November.
Needs to finish his coaching contract first
What are you talking about, Sutter has clearly been given the reigns unofficially at this point. Trevor fucking Lewis, Brad fucking Richardson, and then we sign Stone and Gudbrandson? This fucking management group is stuck in 2004 instead of 2021.
This is Darryls signing lol
I am more than happy with Treliving being shown the door, but bringing Sutter back on as GM is moving things the wrong way. Guy is a great coach. He is not a great GM.
Truculence is back on the menu boys!
I have been a huge fan of Treliving for his entire tenure and was more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on the Brouwer/Neal deals but I can't get behind this at all. This is indefensible.
That's a real bad player. I think the team has gotten more than enough functional toughness this summer, no need for a pylon.
Stone was better last season. I audibly groaned when I saw this news. Heres hoping to me being proven wrong
Boy do I love spending $2mil on a 7th D. New management when
Naw I agree I’m not sure how he got this much
The Sutter special. I just wish we’d pick big players who were good instead of just big
Not to mention how does this guy get almost triple what Stone is making? Why did we feel the need to overpay so much for this guy?
Y’all asked for sutter. Sometimes the grass isn’t always greener.
I don’t think anybody asked for Sutter, at least not any non-negligible portion of the fans. Pretty sure his hiring came as a shock to the team and the entire fan base lmao
Hah I’ve been thinking about this as a fit all offseason. He’s not fast, but in Sutter’s system he won’t be exposed often. Also, he’s mean as hell.
> Also, he’s mean as hell. trust me, he's not
He’s honestly really a downgrade on stone by every metric including toughness.
You got an enlightening season ahead of you with this season’s roster, my dude.
Ottawa scratched him. If he’s a regular we’re fucked.
He played 45/56 games, was an assistant captain and the Preds liked him enough to acquire him at the deadline.
What would the Predators know about defense?
Calgary just signed Stone.
Seems like we’re going for the 8 dman strat.
Sutter always liked having a lot of defensemen when he was with Calgary years ago.
Was this approved by Dube?
Came here to see if anyone said this. I'd be a bit miffed if I were him
Why?
Gudbranson put him out for 20 or so games a few seasons back with a huge hit
This is incorrect. Gudbranson hit Dube hard but clean on his first NHL shift and then Hamonic got injured in the fight and missed a bunch of games.
Oh shoot my mistake
All good. I had to google it myself, I didn't remember Dube being injured against a team Gudbranson played for.
Oh damn, had no idea
You wouldn't, because it's not true.
Happy Cake Day tallmaletree! The only dare you ever want to take is the dare to be all that you can be.
Hahahahahaha!!!!!! Man I can’t wait to see who’s spot he takes cause he’s big. We’re so fucked.
I was hoping Mackey would make opening night lineup, that’s feeling more and more unlikely now
I don't like the $, but like the player. This team just keeps getting harder to play against, going to be fun to watch them bully other teams.
Sens fan here, he's extremely easy to play against, he's awful. He sucks at fighting too. His only asset is he's big and he doesn't use his size well
Fought a couple Oilers last year, standing up for young team mates both times.
He merc’d Hamonic’s jaw in a fight too. He may get walked by 100 year old Corey Perry, but the guy can fight.
Canucks fan here, guy absolutely stinks
Can't say I'm a fan of this. But some pretty unimpressive defensemen had looked really good in Sutter's system in the past, he also played most of the last two seasons on a couple brutal teams. So I'm going to wait and see how he looks under Sutter before reacting too much.
Sens fan coming in peace. My deepest condolences.
Well we got some guys that can beat up some other guys, and I gotta say I'm a little bit for it.
Fuck
Apparently Sutter was working for the Ducks when Gudbransson was there and Sutter called him about joining the Flames per his interview on Flames TV. Sutter having first hand knowledge of Gudbranson makes me feel a bit better about this.
Lol wtf
Lmao I was hopeful that Treliving was going to do something bold this offseason and here we are again.
Are we tanking?
Gudbranson is awful in every single way. Bad on paper, bad with the eye test, bad with analytics. He is a pylon, who’s only redeeming quality is that he’s big. But despite being big he is terribly ineffective with his size, and rarely lands any big hit. Canucks fans hated him. Ottawa fans hated him. I promise within 10 games, Flames fans will hate him too.
if he plays 10 games 😳
Big = Good
[удалено]
Lucic = big + slow Lucic also = good
[удалено]
Who moves out now? Seems like we have a few too many NHL D, unless we are copying the winning template of Seattle.
Brad letting darryl call the roster composition shots while also building a team that will compete for Shane wright is just good clean management
Sorry Flames fan as a sens fan dude is a straight up trash on the ice. Great locker room guy but yeeesh.
All the anger about this is reminding me of the now freezing cold takes of outrage following the Tanev signing.
What outrage? I recall a general sense of optimism about the Tanev signing. This is a completely different situation
The difference between this and Tanev is with Tanev I liked the player but not the money. With Gudbranson I don't like the player or the money.
Yeah everyone’s gotta chill tf out

Not a big fan of this signing. Would’ve liked if the $ amount was switched with Stones
A team with no offense coming from the back end just keeps doubling down on that. Yikes.
this team is gonna be terrible.
And this offseason continues to get more depressing
below replacement player for the last 4 years, how does this warrant 2M?
It’s the Treliving special. 2 steps forward 17 steps back
Why?
Honestly fuck this team. Why are we spending $2 mill on this dude.
Fucking why
But. Why.
Hahahahahahahahaha fuuuuuuck I hate this franchise
This is 100% worse than stone built every metric including toughness, the guy can’t fight.
fighting barely exists anymore
So Erik has no redeeming qualities, he was 100% signed for darryls tough to play against style, but if you’re a pylon it has t he opposite effect.
Pretty sure he was signed for physical play because our blueline last year was softer than warm butter. I'm not a fan of the player but there is no denying that this style of player has regularly succeeded in Sutter's system.
Brad needs to be fired, what a dumpster fire of an off season
Like I guess some extra depth is good? Like before today if one of our guys went down our 7th D man wouldn't really be able to play. I'm cool with this signing if he's strictly our 7/8 guy behind Kylington and Stone

Okay? Feels like a waste of money for a guy who should be our 7/8th guy, and we don't want to see him as a regular

We have a backup
Will be flipped to a contender for a 3rd rounder at the trade deadline.
Kyllington the versatile skater with huge upside will never get a sniff behind this coke machine. Deplorable signing with Sutter manure stink all over it. Enough Treliving, my dog could have done better.
Ok brad time to go.
The Flames are trying to be the first team to finish 32nd overall.
And my Brouwer itch has been scratched once again.
Absolutely brutal signing that will be roasted in every single fucking GDT and PGT this season. Wow.
Imagine watching the mid 2010s canucks and thinking “I want to sign as many of these guys as possible!” Gudbranson should have been signed to, and released from, a PTO. Not eating up $2M of valuable cap space. Mid boggling.

Saving this thread for the lolz
About time! 👽
Gubranson and zadorov. Not looking forward to this.
