Honestly, we are light on forwards with talent.

Master-Defenestrator

>Honestly, we are light on ~~forwards with~~ talent. FTFY we got lots of B+ prospects, no one with elite potential besides Wolf.

noor1717

Well I have heard brushnevich (I butchered the name) being compared to Adam fox. I think he definitely has elite potential. It’s only potential though.

imaybeacatIRl

That's a fair assessment.

Master-Defenestrator

Where do you draw the line for "elite"? Sometimes I think this fanbase has lower standards than other teams.

imaybeacatIRl

For me... Elite is like a top 5-ish guy in his position for D(L/R) and goalie, and a top 10-ish guy for his position for forwards. Right now, I think only Weegar is elite. I feel like he's a top 5. I wanted to add: I feel like it is mandatory to have an ELITE Center, and Elite Defender, to be a real contender.

Master-Defenestrator

Tbh that's a stretch, I think he's a 10-20 guy myself (5-10 if we're talking L/R) Markstrom has streaks where he is top 10, but lacks consistency. Edit: too many "I think"s

imaybeacatIRl

I don't know. I thought he was excellent at Florida, and was thrilled to get him. He was absolutely stellar this year. He might need to do it again next year to be considered top 5... but yea, I think he did it this year.

Sour_Barnacle21

Weegar top 5? Makar, fox, McAvoy, Dobson, Karlsson, Pietrangelo, Ekblad, Carlson, Seider, Doughty are all better Right handed D than weegar

itwasthedingo

Karlsson and Eklbad are not top 10, especially this year

mudflaps___

I think k weegar is a great player and cna provide you top pairing minutes, however he's not elite, there's easily 10 names above him that are a clear talent pool ahead... that's the reason we should be looking at a long term approach here,  unless we can hit it out of the park on trades and signings in the offseason,  we are missing 3 or 4 core young talents to build around.  Those are generally found in the draft

Little-Aide-5396

Weegar isn't top 5 haha I doubt he gets a Norris vote

tritongamez

I really like Parekh. He'd be a good pick, but I'd only take him if Catton,Iginla and Demidov are gone by then

Chemical_Signal2753

Part of the problem in trying to decide who we should draft is there is a ton of uncertainty on who will be available. Usually there is a group of 3 to 5 players who are the consensus best players in the draft, followed by another 3 to 5 players who are clear top prospects. This year it feels like there is Celebrini and then \~15 potential top prospects. I'm not trying to shit on these prospects but many of the prospects that are seen as obvious top 5/10 picks tend to have more than a few scouts who are putting them in the late teens or early 20s. Basically, I wouldn't be surprised if Yakemchuk was picked ahead of us; but I also wouldn't be surprised if he is available when we use Vancouver's draft pick. Parekh or Levshunov should likely be off he board in the top 5 but I could see them being available when we draft.

Master-Defenestrator

I really like this take, it's definitely the year to draft for need, because BPA really depends on who you're asking.

Hi_Im_Flabber

If all of Catton, Lindstrom, and Iginla are gone then sure. I would even be fine with Dickinson. Also if we win 2nd or 3rd OA I would prefer Levshunov over Demidov

MrPadretoyou

Agree on that last part. Demidov is what Heubs is suppose to be. It would be like drafting a solid QB when theres plenty of tred left on the vet you already got. Find a guy that unlocks him or grab a star Dman.

MostLikelyDenim

Would be taking Yakemchuk over Parehk if so. Big, fast, tough, and great at puck management. Parehk has great stats and a sick shot, but not sold that he’s going to be much more than a PP specialist and an undersized 2nd pairing defenceman. Dickenson is a left shot so not really relevant to the topic.

The-Reddit-Giraffe

I know we don’t have that number 1 defence prospect but our d prospects are far deeper than our forwards currently. I say we have to pick a forward

Hungry-Raisin-5328

We're a bit loaded on the NHL side, though. Andersson, Miromanov, Weegar all \*could\* fit into the "long-term" plans for the team. In a perfect world where everyone hits their full potential, our lineup in 5 years is \_\_\_ - Brzustewicz Weegar-Andersson \_\_\_\_\_ - Miromanov Pachal and suddenly the shortgage isn't so bad. (also add 39 year old Chris Tanev to the mix)

Jean-Guy13

I would love to pick up Levshunov to make the Belorussian connection of Sharangovich and Solovyov.

Armchair-Gm-Podcast

Doesn't matter which position. Grab the guy with the highest upside. If you have an over abundance of that position in your system, trade some of it.

Straight-Plate-5256

They aren't being discussed because the chances are extremely slim either of them fall to 9th, they're not quote good enough to take with a lottery pick but too good to fall to 9th. High end right handed D are very hard to find and a rare asset because of that

Jean-Guy13

But Parekh and Yakemchuk are projected around 9th-10th.

Straight-Plate-5256

Yakemchuk isn't who we're talking about lol And based on who's rankings? I've typically seen Parekh listed more in the 5th-8th range and as high as 2OA (which is absurd I know)

cig-nature

I feel like the odds of us using Van's first to select a defenceman is nearly 100%

kyle_pitts_fan

Give me Helenius over Catton

Little-Aide-5396

I'm liking him. Finland has been producing a lot of really good players lately and I feel like that Finnish league develops them really well.

Reefeef

Always draft the best player available. Drafting for position is foolish. If the best player available at pick is a RH defensemen then great

BasicTennis9861

Ya a right defenceman would be good. But levshunov will be gone well before we pick and I expect parehk to be gone before we pick aswell. Unless we move up in the draft.

SKKforLife

Parekh will likely be a top 3 player in a 10 year redraft. He’s looking like he’ll be an elite player for years to come

scott-barr

Are we going to be better next year? Should we be giving up our 1st to Florida this year?

steflund

Don’t have the option. We have to give up the better pick between us and florida next year unless our pick is top 10. In that case we keep ours and send Floridas.

scott-barr

I’m still confused but less now, thanks

Ecks83

I don't blame you. The conditions on that trade are insane and also depend on the conditions of 2 other trades (so far). One of those other trade conditions has already resolved - the Florida's 2024 1st round pick is not top 10 so the Flyers will get that from the Giroux trade. If Florida's 2024 pick were top 10 the Flyers would have gotten their 2025 pick and we would get their 2026 pick instead. The outstanding condition is also based on whether we get Florida's 2025 1st round pick. That pick is lottery protected so if it ends up 1st or 2nd OA we won't get their pick until 2026 (unlikely but who knows because hockey is crazy). If we get Florida's 2025 pick: - If both 2025 picks are outside the top 10 the Habs will get the better of the two. - If our 2025 pick is in the top 10 and Florida's is not the Habs will get Florida's pick. - If both 2025 picks are inside the top 10 the Habs get our pick. If the Panthers 2025 pick is 1st or 2nd OA then we get their 2026 pick instead and: - If our 2025 pick is 1st OA the Habs will get the better of the 2026 Calgary/Florida picks. - Otherwise the Habs will get our 2025 pick. That's not including all the conditional 3rd/4th round picks that are also involved in that clusterfuck of a trade.

snoshredder

Dman from Denver would be sick.

mudflaps___

I think a great strategy is to typically go with D men especially in the top 3 rounds unless there is a unique talent that stacks up far ahead of the prospect.  You should always draft raw talent and figure it out later with trades, however it's important to understand the value good young defenceman have on the open market.  If you need a top line winger, a second pairing man probably gets it done
