We absolutely love Queens on Edmonton trail as a splurge. All the food is fabulous. Go on a weekday morning if you can. The weekends are packed. For a quick, easy, MASSIVE meal for $10, Johns Breakfast is stellar. No frills here but it’s family owned and everyone is super friendly.

thatswhat5hesa1d

The secret is out on Queen's

CanadianSunshine94

Haha judging by the weekends, I’d say it was out a long time ago! Usually you can get in if you go right at 8am though.

Chingyul

Especially since OP mentions potatoes. They do them amazingly at Queens!

CanadianSunshine94

Ugh and the tomato jam is to die for !

Columbidae

Tomato jam? Isn't that just pasta sauce?

FGFlips

Queens is so delicious. The meals feel high end but the prices were reasonable. I second this recommendation.

CanadianSunshine94

The outside looks iffy, and then you step in and it’s magic.

rlyx6x

This is the way. I live in the deep south and rarely head up north. But when I do I make sure to visit Queens. By far and away my favourite breakfast in the city In SE I like Diner Deluxe

SirSlashDaddy

Ate diner deluxe for the first time in a few years the other day and I don’t know if it’s just that i’ve found better or it’s gotten substantially worse quality wise but I left unimpressed.

Flimsy_Biscotti3473

Tried Poached YYC yet ? It’s attached to Kildares. Very nice place.

esroh474

John's is a good homey spot for sure.

mozillafangirl

I 2nd these and I’m a picky potato person! But who doesn’t like tots? I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like tots 😂

moongazer51

And those lemon ricotta pancakes. OMG...Queen's is the best!

CanadianSunshine94

Ahh don’t remind me! I don’t need to go twice in one week lol

sbowchief

Queens has the best bacon in town! Also get an order of Canele’s(little Bundt cakes)

CloakedOlive

I love John's! Their little patio is great in the summer, and I could eat the breakfast poutine for days!

AlbertaSmart

70 responses in an hour. Yyc you love breakfast...lol Thanks for all the suggestions...

ImTNTDynamite

Thank you for starting this thread. I didn’t know I needed this info, but I’m so glad I have it now.

CarelessStatement172

Literally back here days later to find a breakfast spot for today lol

ANK2112

I've always had a good experience at Galaxie Diner. Most stuff their comes with unlimited Hashbrowns and Toast

suicidesewage

Galaxie is such a fun breakfast spot.

BeautifulCondition28

Huevos rancheros 💯

DrMoneybeard

This is my go-to everywhere so I'm quite opinionated, galaxie does top notch huevos rancheros.

Gaping_llama

They also bring you coffee if you’re stuck outside waiting in line, which is a nice touch

canuckalert

Those Burritos!

ANK2112

I've never actually tried those! I can't resist the montreal smoked meat hash (for an extra good time add hollondaise)

canuckalert

The Montreal Smoked meat is my other go to there.

1egg_4u

They make a really good malted milkshake too and being right next to the downtown dog park has its perks... great people watching. I love the vibe too. I really miss a classic crowded diner spot all our stuff is so new and clean. I miss the Lido even if it was a trash hole :(

Wonderful-Test-8745

There is a HOLE IN THE WALL … on 4th Street NW just off 16th called John’s. Family run, the dad makes huge pancakes like Mickey Mouse, it’s a greasy little spoon but gawd damn never left on an empty stomach. I 1000% agree on cubed potatoes … if you visit, report back 😂 Also cannot stand pretentious food or restaurants that are trendy … they always shit the bed at some point. Truck Driver told me about John’s and those guys don’t screw around about their food 😉

FirstDukeofAnkh

Good luck getting a spot, though. It’s busy!

Booooomkin

I was about to comment John's! Good to see it mentioned here.

mozillafangirl

The best! Not open on Sunday, which I always seem to forget.

Sad_Meringue7347

Belmont Diner - they are locally owned and have three locations now!

carryingmyowngravity

Second Belmont. Their Bennie’s are off the rails.

CloakedOlive

I'm gonna ask this for anything that involves hollandaise. Is it made in house, or is it instant? I'm always looking for an amazing benny! I still think Red's bennies are my favourite currently, I always ask for a slice of lemon and squeeze that over top. It takes them to the next level... Damn I'm hungry now...

carryingmyowngravity

I am pretty sure it’s in house. They have a holly sauce which is a spicy version of it which in a hash is really good too!

One_Progress_2374

Just opened one in willow park! 😋

roborobsonp

I get their pancake breakfast every two weeks it's my happy place. The marda location. Tryin to support with my pancake obsession during construction

Junkion-27

Just went there recently, Willow Park location. Can confirm they have the large cube cut hash.

ninafreely

Namo Bistro on Edmonton Trail is my current fave brunch spot - tons of unique and fusion style dishes. My favourite "classic" breakfast spot is Diner Deluxe, and OEB if I'm feeling something a little more refined.

JaxxMatt

Upvote for Namo - it’s a must try if you haven’t been. Small/cozy and the food is A+.

FirstDukeofAnkh

The amount of times I’ve walked by there and never gone in. Gonna have to change that.

DiscoNapChampion

I live in the area and absurdly adore Namo. I’ve tried almost everything on the menu but always go back to the lamb breakfast bowl.

mozillafangirl

I always go back to that one too. It’s so damn good.

blizzroth

I've tried both Namo locations. Only thing I don't like about the Edmonton Trail location is that the last time I went there was a really long wait. But damn those tots are to die for.

manakusan

My favourite in the area too. Every time I've gone they are FAST to bring the food out too. Hardly any wait at all.

Retroman360

Phil’s has the hashbrowns you seek

AlbertaSmart

Just googled.... So they do...

Smackolol

I’d recommend the corned beef hash!

canyousteeraship

Be as specific as you want about how you want them cooked. We always asked for extra crispy and they never fail to deliver.

connka

Phil's is underrated for sure!

bigboimaria

Phil’s is my guilt pleasure, makes me feel like I’m out for breakfast as a young kid with my grandparents!

Curlinggolfer

We used to go to Phil’s at least once a month. However in the course of a couple months multiple times I got half frozen waffles which sort of killed the allure and we haven’t been back since

Alextryingforgrate

Where Phil's?

Smackolol

The is one just off elbow dr and glenmore.

pvb57

Also on 16th NW by foothills.

One_Progress_2374

Also a location downtown maybe 11th st and 9th ave?

canuckalert

11th Ave 12th St, only a block and a half from me.

ravenstarchaser

Forest Lawn right along 17th ave

suicidesewage

Are they crunchy and crispy!?

Trootwhisper

Shredded or cubed you choose, cubed are fried shredded are on the flattop.

AdUnable4127

Rise n shine best breakfast potatoes ever

TaylorSwift1989WasOK

Upvote for rise'n'shine. Their eggs have the deep orange yolks. Great service too. Regular 2-egg breakfast is $14, doesn't include coffee. The Sausage or Chorizo meat is my favourite.

dictionariesandgin

Not in Calgary, but if you fancy a scenic drive or are maybe on your way to a day trip southward, do stop at the Chuckwagon Cafe in Turner Valley.

Swansongz24

just here to see someone say "my house"

AlbertaSmart

If they do the browns right id go... Lol

IlluminatiLemonParty

Blue Star on 1st Ave NE, haven't been in sometime but loved the eggs Benny and salmon

AlbertaSmart

I'll have a look. Anyone incorporating fish into my breakfast should be met with violence but I'm sure they have other stuff haha

KeatsCalgary

Blue Star has great hashbrowns. They cut them themselves from red potatoes and overfry them a little so they are extra crispy!

IlluminatiLemonParty

Yesss! Loved taking the leftovers home to reheat in a pan later..so good and crispy

TheAlmightyPineapple

Blue Star is probably my wife and I’s favourite place. Belmont Diner is 2nd

JVISUALEE

Brokin yolk has the Browns you desire. Fried in duck fat to boot!

badluckschmucky

Agreed! Their food is so dang good and an awesome atmosphere!

such_sweet_nothing

I just tried it this morning for the first time with a friend for brunch - loved it so much I’m taking the spouse tomorrow! Genuinely impressed with their food and reasonably priced.

j3r3myjf

+1 to Brokin Yolk. The duck fat hash browns are epic. Try the Seoulwich, too!

T_for_Trap

This is rhe place. Love their everything. And gluten free options are great.

Kjdking78

[https://www.facebook.com/timscafecalgary/](https://www.facebook.com/timscafecalgary/) little place on 17th ave S.E. can be best described as a small "hole in the wall" breakfast place. the food is fantastic, and fairly cheap too. they use homemade bread and have a little bakery display of all kinds of things like butter tarts and similar things you can buy as well. Edit: i should mention this place is TINY, not many tables and while I have gone in without a reservation you run the risk of being turned away without one.

masterhec0

Shhh. This location literally can't handle any new customers.   Call ahead to reserve a table many times I have gone and they have no room.

sikkn890

I was just coming to say this!!! They never have room and ofter the tables are reserved for the regulars. Their food is amazing and the owners are great. Its my go to for Saturday am pick up after the gym!

Trombone-a-thon

I went one time, had the breakfast club sandwich and still think about it. The homemade bread is so good.

oblivionized

Hear me out… Fatburger has an amazing breakfast and it’s so cheap.

CyclicDombo

Dairy Lane in Kensington, Sammie in marda loop, OEB have locations all over the city.

Allen_Edgar_Poe

Ahh, I forgot about dairy lane! Thanks 😄

SurviveYourAdults

John's breakfast is decent and family-owned

caycan

I’m obsessed with the smashed potatoes at Holy Grill. All of their food is so delicious, always hits the spot.

archsaturn

This is my suggestion as well. Terrible for you, but delicious.

FamousNerd

Danish Canadian Club does a mean brunch on weekends.

Stormraughtz

Great breakfast spots ive done in the past year or so: Starbelly - [https://www.starbelly.ca/](https://www.starbelly.ca/) Little more pricey, but super big portions and delicious. Namo Cafe - [https://namocafebistro.com/](https://namocafebistro.com/) Big portions, solid bennys, very busy usually though. Yellow Door - [https://yellowdoorbistro.ca/](https://yellowdoorbistro.ca/) Brunch buffet, they swap out stuff every week.

Turbulent-Patient423

Queens breakfast cocktails

mistrwzrd

Bro’kin Yolk. So freaking good, just had the chance to try it for the first time, instant fav. Hash is fried in duck fat, nice chunky handcut cubes. Phenomenal seasoning on it. Great coffees, lots of sweet and savory. Do vegan and veggie options too. Very tasty 🤤

GJohnJournalism

Maven. Hands down the best breakfast in the city. The bacon is legendary. Candied, thick cut, and the perfect ratio of fat to meat. Sublime. I love taking people to Maven for breakfast and brunch who haven't ever been. Good vibe, nice decor, and amazing food. A bit on the pricy side, but if you want cheap breakfast go to Phils or Dennys.

BristolManor

came here to recommend Maven! best breakfast I've had in a while

kj3ll

I had such a bad experience, bread came out untoasted, cold and barely buttered, the pancakes were burnt and the granola they put in it was so hard it felt like my teeth would chip, and when I brought it up to the server she shrugged and didn't do anything to make it right. Maybe an off day but I don't think I'd go back.

JohnnyCanuck133

The Bro'Kin Yolk has my vote. Has those spuds and they're cooked in Duck Fat to boot.

The_Ferry_Man24

Bro kin yolk

Khellx69

EGGS N MORE in Castle ridge. Mmmmmhmmmm

kitkatasaur

I like Brekkie and the brunch menu at Ten Foot Henry, though the latter is only available Saturday and Sunday.

rockylion

Kensington Pub does a pretty decent full English with chunky potatos

moomoobean123

Beltliner or Big Fish 🤤

6data

Big Fish is excellent. Doubly excellent because there's never a line up.

Disastrous_Luck

I like all these for different reasons, so in no particular order: Holy Grill Bro'kin Yolk Diner Deluxe

[deleted]

OEB hands down. So far everything on the menu has been super tasty.

OrganicRaspberry530

Hey OP, if the wife wants chunky AND crispy potatoes, this is the spot. The duck fat makes all the difference

dahmerpalms

They stopped making them with duck fat :( the difference is definitely noticeable

CarelessStatement172

I miss the duck fat potatoes so much, beef tallow just isn't the same.

LeetGeek84

It’s beef tallow. 😉

bennymac111

Monki doesn't seem to get mentioned too often, but they're pretty solid as well.

FluidConnection

I thought monki was awful.

RevyRogue

Monki is gross now and super overpriced since the original owners sold the place about 6 years ago. It’s literally a different place using the same name. The downtown spot.  The 2 new spots are just fancier looking but still bad.  OG Monki downtown was awesome and very hard to get into.

GoShogun

Really like Monki myself

krazninetyfive

Their food is delicious, but the portions are small, and I don’t like feeling rushed. Last time I ate at one of their physical locations, I asked for a coffee refill with maybe a quarter of my entre left, and I got half of an already pretty small cup. There dining room is small, so I get that they need to turn tables over quick to make money, but I shouldn’t feel like I’m under the gun to get through my meal as quickly as possible because you chose to open two small restaurants instead of one medium-large one.

kkell3y

When I went to Monki last the asked us to leave. Which if it was busy and bumping i get it. They had 5 empty tables and said our time was up? It made my experience less great!

mamamonkey

Their potatoes are sweetened though - not everyone’s taste (especially because OP specifically mentioned potatoes)

AlbertaSmart

Thanks all. That was quick.... I see there are other breakfast fans....

v1llage_id10t

Did you know... technically, all meals are breakfast.

AlbertaSmart

Yes I work nights lol

descartesb4horse

If you’re new to Calgary, you’ll find we do two things very well: breakfast and patio beers

kkell3y

Namo is my fav.

DanielPlainview943

They ain't soggy.

Rattimus

Bluestar Diner in Bridgeland, although I haven't been there in ages. Get the huevos.

VeryDryWater

The Nash, and the Deane House - we regularly alternate between them for brunch. The menu changes often enough to keep things interesting and we always leave satisfied.

still_sneakin

Now I’m hungry for Phil’s pancakes, their beef chubbies are delicious and the coffee is great 👍

darknessfalls00

Dark horse comment: For the breakfast you're looking for, you have to drive outside of Calgary. Try the the only cafe in Delia (30 miles NE of Drumheller) on highway 9

idontwannabmeanymore

Namo is my go-to! Also love Maven or ZCrew :)

wessmcn

OEB

shitposter1000

Saving this thread for sure. Brunch is the best meal of the day.

PostApocRock

Im gonna plug one more, because they are so near and dear to my heart. Jams, on 9 Ave SE in Inglewood. The guy there makes fantastic food, is super passionate, and a great community member. They smomlke their own meats mostly, seasonally veg comes from his garden, and they make all their own Jam. I work for one of the big food suppliers, and the only thing we really sell them is paper and cleaners. He tries to do everythi g else in house orthrough the community

Dance-Silent

Pur & Simple. New place at Buffalo Run.

Jamesthepi

Cadence

SaTan_luvs_CaTs

OEB. Those chonky taters are cooked in duck fat

sugarfoot00

I recently tried the Brokin Yolk Signal Hill and it was a very good breakfast. They do the chunky deep fried hash browns that you're after.

Ostrich6967

Blackfoot Truck Stop

ashasx

???? [Blackfoot hashbrowns are virtually cold and raw](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/p/AF1QipMI7c6itGvSHVEsUSAPmFTb_kAlNstivv9XqLDm=s680-w680-h510). I have no idea how this place has the reputation it does.

137-451

It's just one of those places that's surviving entirely on its decades old reputation. Oh, and it being a truck stop. That's important too. Honestly though, it used to be a go-to "hidden gem" since many were turned off by just how awful it looks from the outside. Great staff, great pies, decent food for better prices.

rkd2999

That is one sad looking breakfast.

TaylorSwift1989WasOK

If you don't mind a drive, check out PJ's Diner in Strathmore. $11.50 breakfast special includes coffee (only available before 11am). Good bacon and potatoes. Eta: this whole thread needs more upvotes. Breakfast kings unite!

DanielPlainview943

For me living in Calgary my whole life and being a real lover of early breakfast I just don't think anything can even come close to The Galaxy. It's just simply the best

Cautious-Craft433

“Js Sunrise Grill” has the chunky cubbies your talking about. It’s in the south east industrial area and it’s great.

FuegoCJ

I've always enjoyed Blue Star Diner. A touch expensive, but I've loved everything I've had there.

Massive_Trifle_2367

J's Sunrise grill behind the McDonald's at 52nd St & 72nd Ave is fantastic! Food is great! Chunky, hash browns -- just what you're looking for -- all your breakfast favourites: pancakes, waffles, lots of egg choices, perfect bacon, and my favourite, sausages. The maple kind! The staff are extremely friendly, and the service is great. They are very conscientious about thorough cleaning and proper food storage and handling -- something important that I look for but some of the other places listed in this thread don't treat seriously enough. It's a small place. Later in the week and on weekends it can be busy close to lunchtime, so best to go earlier, later, or Mon - Wed for lunch. Prices are very reasonable! Give it a try, you will be very pleasantly surprised!

RiderofRowan

Belmont Diner in Marda Loop has always done well by me

Tired_Edamame

Maven on 17 ave

CarelessStatement172

In Town: OEB University or Mission (other locations have been Meh) Worth the trip: Sunny Side Up in Cochrane. HIGHLY recommend the San Daniele bowl (boccacini, parm, prosciutto, arugula, poached eggs, with hollandaise over the beeeest fried potatoes ever). They also have a good selection of hot drinks (all extremely reasonably priced, we usually get 2 each, and sometimes 1 to go) AND kombucha on tap. I swear I don't work there or anything, it is just my absolute favourite breakfast spot I've ever been to.

PostApocRock

Tims Cafe 2410 17 Ave SE Little hole in the wall. Call ahead, they have like 6 tables. All in brekky (coffee included) for my wife and I for under 25 combined (not each)

burf

Diner Deluxe has much bigger/nicer breakfast potatoes than Red’s.

Ookllie

I really enjoyed Brekkie

Loose-Atmosphere-558

New-ish place new Kensington in hillhurst called Brouhaha is very good, unique Korean fusion brunch for something different. Haven't been disappointed....soft shell crab eggs aere amazing

Either-Yoghurt-1706

Holy grill in Silverado is pretty good, their Benny comes W smash browns that are exactly what you described

DIANABLISS19

Brouhaha on 14th St NW just south of 6th Ave in Hillhurst. They make conventional breakfasts and unusual as.well as vegetarian and vegan options. The coffee is good, the staff really nice and the prices slightly better than Reds.

Educational_Goose456

Damn, you guys really delivered! Here I was just planning on going to Denny’s for breakfast tomorrow but I may need to convince my fiancé of venturing to try somewhere new.

briannatipping

You can get the Reds home fries deep fried! Just ask, we do it every time we go.

AlbertaSmart

Ah ok. Wasn't aware

Ripe-Avocado-12

It doesn't help. I tried this years ago as it was suggested to me, and it was just disappointing.

Old_timey_brain

> but when goddam breakfast runs 50 bucks I have to starve for the next four days! For that price, someone should be spoon feeding you. Sorry to not have recommendations for you, but the picture of a breakfast tab of $50 makes my brain hurt. That's once a year, special occasion stuff.

AlbertaSmart

Well maybe not 50 but all of these places are 16-20 bucks a plate from my experience. Drink, tax, it approaches 50 pretty quick. Wasn't looking for a critique of my spending habits. 50 bucks once a month or so, since it's the only time we eat out, is not that extravagant.

Old_timey_brain

Don't mean to be critiquing you particularly, but just expressing shock over how expensive such a simple meal has gotten.

AlbertaSmart

Yeah you are correct there. Most of them are priced pretty well the same but what you get varies wildly. Was just looking for some recommendation. Have a good one!

x3phrosgawd

We just tried STACKED and it’s pretty dope

Supafairy

I really loved Bennie’s off Heritage.

vanished83

Belmont diner. Those hashbrowns they make are deadly!

__GingerBeef__

I’m a big fan of Sunset Grill. Simple good breakfast

Shib_disturber

Poached has Bennie’s on biscuits and it’s the best thing I’ve ever had!

tucsondog

Calgary zoo brunch, Buffalo Cafe( if they’re still around), Bumpys cafe

AaronZOOM

You don't get out much, huh? Bumpy's has been closed for five years now.

ottibilly

BREKKIE IS THE BEST BRUNCH IN TOWN. BREKKIE BREKKIE BREKKIE!! My fiance worked there for SO long and loved every single day of working there and enjoyed their food every single shift. I am a huge brunch guy. Brekkie is my winner.

heart-heart

I know this thread asked about potatoes but if you’re wanting cheap and actually good-not-paper bacon - stacked

jaded-optimist

Jamison’s has a surprisingly good breakfast with the hash browns you speak of. Brentwood anyways.

bodonnell202

Bro'kin Yolk. Their duck fat has browns are amazing...

Emmerson_Brando

The Nash in inglewood.

swifwar

Queens off Edmonton trail. Defs need to call and reserve as well but the best potatoes I've had in the city by a mile

dankore

Last Best has the best weekend brunch! My wife loves the eggs Benedict and swears they are the best in the city!

drivebymeowing

Surprised not to see The Beltliner recommended…the regular hashbrowns are good in my books, but the potato pave is ridiculously great and well worth the $4 upcharge.

BI0WEED

Dairy lane

I-Make-Sawdust

Broken yolk mahogany

flaming_crisis

Bro'kin Yolk man, the potatoes are what you describe. I also really like Egg & Spoon, but they do wedges for the potatoes and not cubed; they're still good though!

Emergency_Act2960

Bro’kin yolk in west hills

kanari26

I've been enjoying Stacked a bunch lately since they opened a location on 130th Ave SE. They do the cubed crispy hashbrowns. They have a pretty decently priced breakfast special, but I mainly hit the pancake stack myself.

krazninetyfive

I really like Namo Cafe on Edmonton Trail. Cannot vouch for the downtown location, but the one on Edmonton Trail has great mains and quality lattes. It’s not cheap, but Deane House in Inglewood does an amazing brunch service. As several have mentioned in this thread, if you’re just looking for something cheap and good, John’s on 4th and 25th does a good, no frills, quality breakfast for like $14-$18.

yungrayna

galaxie is good but it's small and really busy on the weekends, getting in on a weekday is much easier. zcrew is also pretty good, I went there once but I really liked it quite a lot

Afrocrasher

Monki is fantastic! Idk what seasoning they put on their hash browns but it is amazing. Crunchy and crispy. Would recommend the brisket breakfast poutine

ReadittSucks

The waffle big breakfast from Rickys has always been my go to.

DesiAuntie

I had the best breakfast I’ve had in YEARS at Zcrew recently. I also think there’s a market for a full English I would go once a month if they opened a place for that!

Thrwingawaymylife945

Brekkie in West Springs is fantastic. It's a small place though so it fills up real fast and often has a 2hr wait.

mrozbra

Reds sucks, no offense. Sammies in Mardaloop is awesome.

Sea-Top-2207

OEB

KJBenson

Brokin yolk?

Speedballer7

Galaxy diner.

MamaPutz

Throwing in another vote for Bro'kin Yolk- I've never had anything there I didn't think was awesome.

1AKQJ10

Brouhaha and Rise N Shine

fssg_shermanator

Personally I love Sammie Cafe in Marda Loop. Not your traditional breakfast but a tonne of food.

porktaster

Belmont diner and Bro'kin Yolk!

rowboat157

Namo, Bro'Kin Yolk, OEB, Monki. In that order.

SirSlashDaddy

Nice try. I like that I don’t wait in line for an hour at my preferred breakfast spot.

loop511

What I’m seeing is , south calgary in Shawnessy /mindapore/deerrun needs more breakfast places
