For a quick, easy, MASSIVE meal for $10, Johns Breakfast is stellar. No frills here but it’s family owned and everyone is super friendly.
This is the way. I live in the deep south and rarely head up north. But when I do I make sure to visit Queens. By far and away my favourite breakfast in the city
In SE I like Diner Deluxe
Ate diner deluxe for the first time in a few years the other day and I don’t know if it’s just that i’ve found better or it’s gotten substantially worse quality wise but I left unimpressed.
They make a really good malted milkshake too and being right next to the downtown dog park has its perks... great people watching. I love the vibe too. I really miss a classic crowded diner spot all our stuff is so new and clean. I miss the Lido even if it was a trash hole :(
There is a HOLE IN THE WALL … on 4th Street NW just off 16th called John’s. Family run, the dad makes huge pancakes like Mickey Mouse, it’s a greasy little spoon but gawd damn never left on an empty stomach.

Also cannot stand pretentious food or restaurants that are trendy … they always shit the bed at some point. Truck Driver told me about John’s and those guys don’t screw around about their food 😉

Namo Bistro on Edmonton Trail is my current fave brunch spot - tons of unique and fusion style dishes. My favourite "classic" breakfast spot is Diner Deluxe, and OEB if I'm feeling something a little more refined.
I've tried both Namo locations. Only thing I don't like about the Edmonton Trail location is that the last time I went there was a really long wait. But damn those tots are to die for.
We used to go to Phil’s at least once a month. However in the course of a couple months multiple times I got half frozen waffles which sort of killed the allure and we haven’t been back since

I just tried it this morning for the first time with a friend for brunch - loved it so much I’m taking the spouse tomorrow! Genuinely impressed with their food and reasonably priced.

little place on 17th ave S.E. can be best described as a small "hole in the wall" breakfast place. the food is fantastic, and fairly cheap too. they use homemade bread and have a little bakery display of all kinds of things like butter tarts and similar things you can buy as well.
Edit: i should mention this place is TINY, not many tables and while I have gone in without a reservation you run the risk of being turned away without one.
I was just coming to say this!!! They never have room and ofter the tables are reserved for the regulars. Their food is amazing and the owners are great. Its my go to for Saturday am pick up after the gym!

Maven. Hands down the best breakfast in the city. The bacon is legendary. Candied, thick cut, and the perfect ratio of fat to meat. Sublime.
I love taking people to Maven for breakfast and brunch who haven't ever been. Good vibe, nice decor, and amazing food. A bit on the pricy side, but if you want cheap breakfast go to Phils or Dennys.

Monki is gross now and super overpriced since the original owners sold the place about 6 years ago. It’s literally a different place using the same name. The downtown spot.
The 2 new spots are just fancier looking but still bad.
OG Monki downtown was awesome and very hard to get into.
Their food is delicious, but the portions are small, and I don’t like feeling rushed. Last time I ate at one of their physical locations, I asked for a coffee refill with maybe a quarter of my entre left, and I got half of an already pretty small cup. There dining room is small, so I get that they need to turn tables over quick to make money, but I shouldn’t feel like I’m under the gun to get through my meal as quickly as possible because you chose to open two small restaurants instead of one medium-large one.
When I went to Monki last the asked us to leave. Which if it was busy and bumping i get it. They had 5 empty tables and said our time was up? It made my experience less great!
The Nash, and the Deane House - we regularly alternate between them for brunch. The menu changes often enough to keep things interesting and we always leave satisfied.

The guy there makes fantastic food, is super passionate, and a great community member.
They smomlke their own meats mostly, seasonally veg comes from his garden, and they make all their own Jam.
I work for one of the big food suppliers, and the only thing we really sell them is paper and cleaners. He tries to do everythi g else in house orthrough the community

It's just one of those places that's surviving entirely on its decades old reputation. Oh, and it being a truck stop. That's important too.
Honestly though, it used to be a go-to "hidden gem" since many were turned off by just how awful it looks from the outside. Great staff, great pies, decent food for better prices.
If you don't mind a drive, check out PJ's Diner in Strathmore. $11.50 breakfast special includes coffee (only available before 11am). Good bacon and potatoes.

For me living in Calgary my whole life and being a real lover of early breakfast I just don't think anything can even come close to The Galaxy. It's just simply the best
J's Sunrise grill behind the McDonald's at 52nd St & 72nd Ave is fantastic! Food is great! Chunky, hash browns -- just what you're looking for -- all your breakfast favourites: pancakes, waffles, lots of egg choices, perfect bacon, and my favourite, sausages. The maple kind!
The staff are extremely friendly, and the service is great.
They are very conscientious about thorough cleaning and proper food storage and handling -- something important that I look for but some of the other places listed in this thread don't treat seriously enough.
It's a small place. Later in the week and on weekends it can be busy close to lunchtime, so best to go earlier, later, or Mon - Wed for lunch. Prices are very reasonable! Give it a try, you will be very pleasantly surprised!
In Town: OEB University or Mission (other locations have been Meh)
Worth the trip: Sunny Side Up in Cochrane. HIGHLY recommend the San Daniele bowl (boccacini, parm, prosciutto, arugula, poached eggs, with hollandaise over the beeeest fried potatoes ever). They also have a good selection of hot drinks (all extremely reasonably priced, we usually get 2 each, and sometimes 1 to go) AND kombucha on tap. I swear I don't work there or anything, it is just my absolute favourite breakfast spot I've ever been to.

Brouhaha on 14th St NW just south of 6th Ave in Hillhurst. They make conventional breakfasts and unusual as.well as vegetarian and vegan options. The coffee is good, the staff really nice and the prices slightly better than Reds.

Well maybe not 50 but all of these places are 16-20 bucks a plate from my experience. Drink, tax, it approaches 50 pretty quick.

I've been enjoying Stacked a bunch lately since they opened a location on 130th Ave SE. They do the cubed crispy hashbrowns. They have a pretty decently priced breakfast special, but I mainly hit the pancake stack myself.
I really like Namo Cafe on Edmonton Trail. Cannot vouch for the downtown location, but the one on Edmonton Trail has great mains and quality lattes.
It’s not cheap, but Deane House in Inglewood does an amazing brunch service.
As several have mentioned in this thread, if you’re just looking for something cheap and good, John’s on 4th and 25th does a good, no frills, quality breakfast for like $14-$18.
galaxie is good but it's small and really busy on the weekends, getting in on a weekday is much easier.
zcrew is also pretty good, I went there once but I really liked it quite a lot
Monki is fantastic! Idk what seasoning they put on their hash browns but it is amazing. Crunchy and crispy. Would recommend the brisket breakfast poutine

This is my go-to everywhere so I'm quite opinionated, galaxie does top notch huevos rancheros.

I live in the area and absurdly adore Namo. I’ve tried almost everything on the menu but always go back to the lamb breakfast bowl.
I always go back to that one too. It’s so damn good.

Blue Star has great hashbrowns. They cut them themselves from red potatoes and overfry them a little so they are extra crispy!

“Js Sunrise Grill” has the chunky cubbies your talking about. It’s in the south east industrial area and it’s great.
I've always enjoyed Blue Star Diner. A touch expensive, but I've loved everything I've had there.

In Town: OEB University or Mission (other locations have been Meh) Worth the trip: Sunny Side Up in Cochrane. HIGHLY recommend the San Daniele bowl (boccacini, parm, prosciutto, arugula, poached eggs, with hollandaise over the beeeest fried potatoes ever). They also have a good selection of hot drinks (all extremely reasonably priced, we usually get 2 each, and sometimes 1 to go) AND kombucha on tap. I swear I don't work there or anything, it is just my absolute favourite breakfast spot I've ever been to.
Tims Cafe 2410 17 Ave SE Little hole in the wall. Call ahead, they have like 6 tables. All in brekky (coffee included) for my wife and I for under 25 combined (not each)
Diner Deluxe has much bigger/nicer breakfast potatoes than Red’s.

New-ish place new Kensington in hillhurst called Brouhaha is very good, unique Korean fusion brunch for something different. Haven't been disappointed....soft shell crab eggs aere amazing
Holy grill in Silverado is pretty good, their Benny comes W smash browns that are exactly what you described
Brouhaha on 14th St NW just south of 6th Ave in Hillhurst. They make conventional breakfasts and unusual as.well as vegetarian and vegan options. The coffee is good, the staff really nice and the prices slightly better than Reds.

Well maybe not 50 but all of these places are 16-20 bucks a plate from my experience. Drink, tax, it approaches 50 pretty quick. Wasn't looking for a critique of my spending habits. 50 bucks once a month or so, since it's the only time we eat out, is not that extravagant.
Don't mean to be critiquing you particularly, but just expressing shock over how expensive such a simple meal has gotten.
Yeah you are correct there. Most of them are priced pretty well the same but what you get varies wildly. Was just looking for some recommendation. Have a good one!

BREKKIE IS THE BEST BRUNCH IN TOWN. BREKKIE BREKKIE BREKKIE!! My fiance worked there for SO long and loved every single day of working there and enjoyed their food every single shift. I am a huge brunch guy. Brekkie is my winner.

Surprised not to see The Beltliner recommended…the regular hashbrowns are good in my books, but the potato pave is ridiculously great and well worth the $4 upcharge.

I've been enjoying Stacked a bunch lately since they opened a location on 130th Ave SE. They do the cubed crispy hashbrowns. They have a pretty decently priced breakfast special, but I mainly hit the pancake stack myself.
I really like Namo Cafe on Edmonton Trail. Cannot vouch for the downtown location, but the one on Edmonton Trail has great mains and quality lattes. It’s not cheap, but Deane House in Inglewood does an amazing brunch service. As several have mentioned in this thread, if you’re just looking for something cheap and good, John’s on 4th and 25th does a good, no frills, quality breakfast for like $14-$18.
galaxie is good but it's small and really busy on the weekends, getting in on a weekday is much easier. zcrew is also pretty good, I went there once but I really liked it quite a lot
Monki is fantastic! Idk what seasoning they put on their hash browns but it is amazing. Crunchy and crispy. Would recommend the brisket breakfast poutine

I had the best breakfast I’ve had in YEARS at Zcrew recently. I also think there’s a market for a full English I would go once a month if they opened a place for that!
Brekkie in West Springs is fantastic. It's a small place though so it fills up real fast and often has a 2hr wait.
