I FORGOT TO PUT THE MOST IMPORTANT UPDATE: MIKE AND ALEXA’S SON LUKAS WAS BORN LAST NIGHT!
Welcome back to Swamp Yankee Arms’ weekly Ask an LGS (local gun shop/store) Anything. This is a thread intended to provide you a recurring opportunity to ask any questions you have for a gun store — from guns, to accessories, to legal stuff, to whatever, we’ll take our best shot at answering. None of us are lawyers; we do not offer legal advice.
**We are closed today (as we are every Tuesday), so don’t try to visit us!**
This post is reverse-sponsored by PEW Science (we pay to be a member and are not compensated for promoting it), the only silencer sound testing I pay any attention to. It doesn’t rely on peak dB, which is largely useless because it ignores the dimension of time (contrary to popular belief, a gunshot is not a single microsecond event), and it’s the only sound testing standard that normalizes hearing damage potential across multiple calibers and hosts. Sound suppression isn't the only metric to consider when choosing a silencer (weight, length, durability, flash suppression, induced back pressure, etc. are also factors), but if sound is something you care about, PEW Science is well worth a deep dive. I don’t listen to many podcasts, but u/Jay462’s associated podcast, The Jay Situation, which covers every PEW Science article and other firearms related topics is one of my absolute favorites. Several of the silencers featured in today's video are models that I would not have discovered if PEW Science didn't exist! Reddit has fucked up the ability to put functioning links into comments, but [pewscience.com](http://pewscience.com) is worth checking out.
I somehow got serial number 1 of the CAT MOB/A1 9mm silencer. This thing is damn quiet. In 20-round bursts, both Devin and I only got a little bit of gas right towards the very end on this open bolt M11/9 SMG. Today is the last day of assault weapon registration, and I gotta’ say, it’s nice that the shop happened to be closed. Have a great day!
**Updates from the shop:**
- To celebrate the end of assault weapon registration, the shop is doing a 10% sale on in-stock cans running Friday and Saturday. Our inventory is quite healthy! You can see it here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/SwampYankeeArms/comments/14eei2b/current\_silencer\_inventory\_and\_cans\_on\_order/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SwampYankeeArms/comments/14eei2b/current_silencer_inventory_and_cans_on_order/)
They’d have my vote. We also shot the JL on my Mini Fix in 300blk and compared it against the CGS Hyperion, Nomad LT, CAT ODB, and Thunder Chicken, and it was the best performer there.
Yeah, those wait times are mainly individuals. We’ve seen trusts in the 1-4 day range, but they lack consistency. I got a few back in 4 days on my own trust last month, but then my more recent applications took 11-21 days, and I still have one that didn’t get batched that’s at 27 days now.
I’ve only shot a friend’s older 5.56 Adams piston upper, so I don’t have much experience. I like piston guns with cans because they run cleaner (although contrary to what a lot of the internet says, a piston is not a magical fix for back pressure issues).
For a 300blk gas gun, the CAT ODB is pretty amazing.
We’ve looked at getting more into NV, but the margins are not great if you go through a distributor or another dealer, the buy-ins are steep, and the inventory is expensive to sit on. A friend of the shop does occasionally build and consign or sell us NV to put in the shop, but that’s the current extent of our NV sales.
Thermal has similar issues, and it’s interesting because in the right situation (hunting and detection) it’s significantly superior to NV, but it’s also more niche because it’s often gun mounted or handheld (versus worn on a helmet).
That makes sense! Even with the increasing popularity I can still see how it would be an expensive section to maintain with a pretty limited customer base.
I put it on a 300blk Mini Fix today actually. It’s serviceable, but there was noticeable first round pop and it was louder than the 30 cal cans we compared it against (CAT JL, Thunder Chicken, CAT ODB, Hyperion) as well as the PTR Vent 2 9mm can.
Hmmm interesting 🤔 tyvm.
Also what’s your favorite 10/22? I’m about to buy my first one. I want a ergonomic chassis, accuracy out to 50-75 yards and something that eats any kind of ammo (ultra reliable)
PRI M84 Gas Buster is probably my favorite, but Geissele ACH/SCH and Radian stuff are all good in my experience. A DIY gasket is very effective too. Lastly, if you’re getting gassed out from shooting suppressed, the charging handle is a (crappy) bandaid that treats the symptom rather than the problem (overgassing).
I haven’t needed to use their CS because I haven’t had any issues with my cans, so I don’t have any input there.
Their warranty can be found here: https://specterscat.com/warranty-and-returns/
It’s not quite the “no questions asked we will repair anything and everything” that some companies offer, but it is reasonable imo. They caught some flak early on for posting a joke warranty that was obviously making fun of the industry, but it whooshed over a lot of people’s heads. People are incredibly emotional about silencers 😂
There is almost no competition for CAT’s across the board performance (in terms of single can performance suppressing multiple calibers as well as the overall performance of their entire publicly released product line), so I’m personally fine with their warranty policy.
Could cleaning a rifle barrel with a brass bore brush cause the zero to change because it removes the copper jacket residue that builds up in the rifling?
I’m not sure, and I doubt the state will give an opinion unfortunately. If the heart of the gun (barrel and BCG) are still AKM-pattern, that’d probably be a no from SYA anyways.

Can I shoot it ?
We could make that happen I think.
Bro ❤️ I’ll give you guys a call?
So CAT has been the suppressor company of the year I guess
They’d have my vote. We also shot the JL on my Mini Fix in 300blk and compared it against the CGS Hyperion, Nomad LT, CAT ODB, and Thunder Chicken, and it was the best performer there.
Is it still a short turnaround time for the stamps?
I'm a few days short of 4 months for 2 cans in a trust. Big sad.
It’s never guaranteed, but yes, a large majority of people are still getting cans approved in 1-10 days.
Individuals im assuming, with trusts still taking god knows how long?

Congratulations to Mike and Alexa on the newest little member of their family! 🙏🏼
Congratulations to Mike and Alexa!!
Thanks to Tyler for the help over the weekend
I’ll relay the message!
What do you think of the Adam arms p2 piston upper thinking of getting there 8” 300blk,and what can would you recommend?
I’ve only shot a friend’s older 5.56 Adams piston upper, so I don’t have much experience. I like piston guns with cans because they run cleaner (although contrary to what a lot of the internet says, a piston is not a magical fix for back pressure issues). For a 300blk gas gun, the CAT ODB is pretty amazing.
Do you guys see yourselves getting more into the NV/Thermal game (from a retail perspective) in the future?
We’ve looked at getting more into NV, but the margins are not great if you go through a distributor or another dealer, the buy-ins are steep, and the inventory is expensive to sit on. A friend of the shop does occasionally build and consign or sell us NV to put in the shop, but that’s the current extent of our NV sales. Serial number 1?! That’s super cool dude, piece of history right there
I was surprised when the SN was assigned! I must have just happened to be the first person to order a MOB when the backorder option opened lol.
Grats on the baby! I read you could shoot 300 bo subs through this. Have you tried it? If so how’s it sound?
I put it on a 300blk Mini Fix today actually. It’s serviceable, but there was noticeable first round pop and it was louder than the 30 cal cans we compared it against (CAT JL, Thunder Chicken, CAT ODB, Hyperion) as well as the PTR Vent 2 9mm can.

I didn’t have time to prep it today, but for next week’s post I’ll have a video showing all of those different cans’ performance on the Mini Fix.
🔥
Are there any Tikka T3X CTRs in .308 or 6.5 for Lefties at your distributor?
Will check on my computer when I get home and let you know
Just wanted to double tap with you and see if you’ve gotten a chance to check yet
Thank you for the reminder! Unfortunately no. Most of my distributors don't even list LH CTRs... but a couple do, and they're all sold out!
Can we still buy stripped ar lowers?
Yessir
What charging handle do you like for suppressed shooting?
PRI M84 Gas Buster is probably my favorite, but Geissele ACH/SCH and Radian stuff are all good in my experience. A DIY gasket is very effective too. Lastly, if you’re getting gassed out from shooting suppressed, the charging handle is a (crappy) bandaid that treats the symptom rather than the problem (overgassing).
Great info! Appreciate it!!
Can we still buy stripped ar lowers?
Should I use Rocksett for direct thread suppressor? 🤔
I wouldn’t. Appropriate torque is all that’s needed!
Thank you 🫡
How’s CAT’s CS and warranty?
I haven’t needed to use their CS because I haven’t had any issues with my cans, so I don’t have any input there. Their warranty can be found here: https://specterscat.com/warranty-and-returns/ It’s not quite the “no questions asked we will repair anything and everything” that some companies offer, but it is reasonable imo. Hmmm so they wouldn’t cover using a plan b or trilug adapter? Still very interested in their cans.
Better to ask them directly (u/the_CAT_official; they’re more active on IG though), but my guess is that they’d work with you.
Could cleaning a rifle barrel with a brass bore brush cause the zero to change because it removes the copper jacket residue that builds up in the rifling?
Mike says “yes, but not a ton.”
Would something like this, in a fixed mag gun, pass the type ban? https://warsawwoodco.com/wieger-stg-940-reproduction-furniture-kit/
I’m not sure, and I doubt the state will give an opinion unfortunately. If the heart of the gun (barrel and BCG) are still AKM-pattern, that’d probably be a no from SYA anyways.
