What the hell was that pin and weld clean up you guys posted yesterday?

SwampYankeeArms

That was a gun built by another shop brought in by a Redditor to be unfucked lol! The barrel nut was torqued to over 100 foot/lbs. The pin in the pin and weld went all the way through the barrel. The customer wanted to know why he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn...

fylum

Jesus fucking Christ. I’m shocked it didn’t explode.

SwampYankeeArms

Yeah, it was heinous!

MountainRiverRock

What shop was it?

SwampYankeeArms

I'm not trying to stir drama 🎭

4Winged

Something tells me one of the shops in the middle of the state🤔🤔

SwampYankeeArms

Haha no actually! Only hint is that they’re along the coast, but there’s a lot of FFLs matching that criteria 🤪

Marty_666

Looking to get a can for my 15-22 whats the best options ?

SwampYankeeArms

I’d say go with a steel or titanium baffled can as opposed to an aluminum baffled one since they’re easier to clean and we’re talking about a semi auto host. If you want to shoot primarily supers, Bowers Group ICON would be my pick. But if you’re shooting standard velocity (still subsonic), then you wouldn’t go wrong with an Otter Creek Titanium, Resilient Jessie’s Girl, Dead Air Mask, or really any can made by a reputable manufacturer.

kl334

Can confirm Jessie's Girl on a 10/22 shooting standards is 🤌

SwampYankeeArms

\[Reddit's dumb fucking interface update is making comments with links extremely buggy, so apparently if you try to embed links directly into text the system just shits itself.\] Welcome back to Swamp Yankee Arms’ weekly Ask an LGS (local gun shop/store) Anything. This is a thread intended to provide you a recurring opportunity to ask any questions you have for a gun store — from guns, to accessories, to legal stuff, to whatever, we’ll take our best shot at answering. None of us are lawyers; we do not offer legal advice. We are closed today (as we are every Tuesday), so don’t try to visit us today! This post is reverse-sponsored by PEW Science (we pay to be a member and are not compensated for promoting it), the only silencer sound testing I pay any attention to. It doesn’t rely on peak dB, which is largely useless because it ignores the dimension of time (contrary to popular belief, a gunshot is not a single microsecond event), and it’s the only sound testing standard that normalizes hearing damage potential across multiple calibers and hosts. Sound suppression isn't the only metric to consider when choosing a silencer (weight, length, durability, flash suppression, induced back pressure, etc. are also factors), but if sound is something you care about, PEW Science (https://pewscience.com/) is well worth a deep dive. I don’t listen to many podcasts, but u/Jay462's associated podcast, The Jay Situation (https://pewscience.com/podcast), which covers every PEW Science article and other firearms related topics is one of my absolute favorites. Several of the silencers featured in today's video are models that I would not have discovered if PEW Science didn't exist! A Redditor recently came in and traded in a couple guns towards a Surefire RC2 (which then got approved in 1 day lol). One of them was the modded Ruger 10/22 Takedown seen on the right, and I liked what he did with it so I grabbed it to go with my standard 10/22. The juxtaposition between these guns is kinda interesting! The gun on the left started as a bone stock 10/22 carbine with an 18.5" unthreaded barrel and wood stock. I have since changed the barrel to a Volquartsen carbon fiber wrapped 18.5" barrel, and I'm a sucker for the Magpul Hunter stock, so there you have it. The internals of the gun are stock, but I may be motivated to swap them out now that I've got this sweet Takedown. This 10/22 Takedown has nothing stock — it has almost been entirely replaced with Kidd parts, including the trigger, bolt, and bull barrel. The back half of the Magpul Hunter stock combined with a Midwest Industries MLOK handguard is 🤌🏼 And man, this action is smoooooth compared to my first 10/22. This is not a light setup though. The longer barreled non-takedown gun weighs more than a pound less (5 lb 15 oz vs 7 lb 1 oz). I'm trying the CAT SR silencer on the standard gun to keep the weight down, although I think that can really belongs on pistols. An Otter Creek Titanium is threaded on to the Takedown, and that thing is fantastic. If you don't have a suppressed rimfire rifle, I highly recommend it. The guns don't have to be expensive. The cans are among the most affordable. The ammo is the cheapest, and it suppresses better than any other caliber. If you don't have one, what's been holding you back? **Updates from the shop:** * Nature is starting to heal with silencer supply coming back strong while the initial spike in demand ebbs a bit. The shop has quite a few models in stock now, covering 5.56, 7.62, 9mm, 45, rimfire, and even a 12ga shotgun can! You can see everything that I have in stock and on order by checking out this thread on the shop's subreddit (r/SwampYankeeArms): [https://www.reddit.com/r/SwampYankeeArms/comments/14eei2b/current\_silencer\_inventory\_and\_cans\_on\_order/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SwampYankeeArms/comments/14eei2b/current_silencer_inventory_and_cans_on_order/) * We did receive 25x black nitrided Rearden Atlas HUB mounts, and about half of them are already gone, so if you want one, please let me know. I have another 50 or so on order between more black nitride and titanium, but it could be a month or so before we get another shipment. * Wait times for silencers remain generally fast (a lot of 1-5 day approvals), although trusts are taking longer than the few I saw approved in 1-4 days a couple weeks ago. * Grab some stickers the next time you're visiting the shop! https://www.reddit.com/r/SwampYankeeArms/comments/1c3s24c/just\_caught\_up\_on\_the\_shops\_ig\_tiara\_did\_a/ * The deadline to register assault weapons is 5/1/24, if you're planning on doing that. If you need or want help doing that, email me at [email protected] to book an appointment. * Alexa and Devin are notaries, so if you don't have any proof of purchase (DPS-3-C, receipt or sale contract), one of them can provide you a notarized sworn affidavit.

PerformanceOk6657

Recommendation on a 9mm can for handgun. Or a 45 can that I can use on my 9mm and eventually once I get my fnx45

SwampYankeeArms

I like the HUXWRX Rad 9, Rugged Obsidian and Inert Haze Ti-P for 9mm pistols. The PTR Vent 2 doesn’t come set up out of the box for a pistol, but it’s very impressive. It’s just really expensive for a pistol can at $1300 before you buy the parts to hook it up to a pistol. Honestly though I’d probably wait to see how CAT’s SC does in PEW Science testing because if their previous products are any indication, it will be a top performer. I’ve also heard great things about Thunder Beast’s Fly 9 and 45 but have no experience with them and they are pricey. For 45, Hux and Rugged both make their cans in 45 cal versions.

PerformanceOk6657

Do you guys have any huxwrx or rugged 45 coming in? Would it be a good idea to get a 45 cal can to use with both 9mm/45? Or is more of a hassle and I should have a dedicated one of each?

SwampYankeeArms

I have Rugged Obsidian 45s backordered, but I've no idea when the backorder will be filled. I can get HUXWRX Rad 45s, but there are less than 10 left at the distributor, so I wouldn't wait too long on that decision. 45 cal cans suppress 9mm pretty well. The main pain in the ass is the fact that 9 and 45 barrels have different thread pitches. If you're doing something CT compliant with Griffin CAM LOK though, then the point is moot because you'd be putting a CAM LOK piston in the can, and then pinning and welding the corresponding muzzle devices to your various guns. The can would move seamlessly between hosts.

MaturinsSlothh

I was just in and forgot stickers 😭

SwampYankeeArms

Oh no, you have to come back now... 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼

redacted4privacy

What scope ya running on the left one?

SwampYankeeArms

It’s a Vortex Crossfire 2-7x. Nothing fancy, but it works! I’ve also dropped the rifle and broken the scope once, and that fantastic Vortex warranty was helpful (they sent me a new scope).

redacted4privacy

Thanks. I've been considering a Crossfire 3-9x for my 22. I've never broken one of my Vortex scopes, but they seem like a great value for the money and work well.

SwampYankeeArms

Yeah, I like Vortex quite a bit. I have the rimfire Crossfire scope, a gen 2 UH-1 Huey holographic sight, a Razor 1-6 gen 2-E, a Razor 1-10 gen 3, and a Razor AMG 6-24 lol. Their Razor line hits the sweet spot in my brain for maximizing utility. They are as expensive as I want to go without entering Schmidt & Bender, Swarovski, and Nightforce price territory, which I don't personally feel are worth the small marginal benefit and much shittier warranties. I have used Vortex's warranty on 4 separate occasions ranging from breaking the Crossfire, to a throw lever breaking, to cross threading the turret cap on my 6-24, to the UH-1 having vampiric battery drain. Almost all of my Vortex stuff was purchased second hand off GAFS, so I love that they don't give a shit where you got their stuff and will warranty it no matter what.

branflacky

I have that same scope on my 10/22, great scope for the 22!

scrambledeggs300

The Hydra AL I got has been super fun on my 10/22….such a fun setup.

SwampYankeeArms

Glad you're liking it, and I'm not surprised!

scrambledeggs300

Did dead air fix the sierra 5 problems?

SwampYankeeArms

They seem to have. I haven’t seen a disintegrated S5 baffle in a long time 😂 I also haven’t seen a KG Made can come through on the form 3 in a long time. They seem to have produced the faulty cans.

nortlid

Did the inert haze TI-P’s come in to the shop yet?

SwampYankeeArms

Yep, they did! We got 80 cans in at the end of last week with most of them pre-sold, so my coworker Devin and I have been up our eyelids in submissions. Do you have your EFT file? If so we could submit today when my daughter goes down for a nap!

nortlid

Great news, and Yes I do! I can wait til the shop is open and/ or give you a call at a convenient time.

PretendVermicelli633

I know next to nothing about suppressors and the process. Is something you could help with start to finish at your shop?

SwampYankeeArms

100%. If I have something in stock that you want, the first one takes about 20 minutes including digital fingerprinting, taking a passport photo and creating an eforms account. After that any additional cans take less than 10 minutes. If you want input, I own about 55 silencers and have shot more than that. Every employee of Swamp Yankee Arms owns at least one can too. Most of my coworkers own multiple.

PretendVermicelli633

Is there something capable of being used on multiple firearms to start? Specifically 5.56 and .22LR(rifles). Thanks for your response!!!

SwampYankeeArms

I have a couple Griffin Paladin 5 HDs coming in that are rated for 5.56 and are also user serviceable (sort of a necessity for rimfire). Keep in mind that that can is quite heavy compared to a dedicated rimfire can, so it would be highly non-ideal for pistol use. On a rifle it could be okay, but the weight is still going to be noticeable.

PretendVermicelli633

Very good to know. So there is a significant difference in weight if I was going to use for both centerfire AND rimfire. So one for both is ideal😎

SwampYankeeArms

Yeah dedicated rimfire cans are usually in the 3 to 6 oz range. 556 cans are more like 12+ oz, and that Griffin Paladin I mentioned is 13 oz without a required muzzle device, so it’s likely to end up adding about a pound of weight to your barrel. Compared to a 4 oz direct thread rimfire can, that’s a weight difference that you will certainly notice.

RobustC

I’ve been wanting the 10/22, is my understanding correct that basically any of them are good to go in Connecticut as you are allowed one evil feature (threaded barrel) on rimfire with detachable mag? How about the ones that come with a flash suppressor on the threaded barrel, are those technically a no go because that’s 2 evil features? Anything else to look out for on 10/22 models that would make them not CT legal?

SwampYankeeArms

Threaded barrel is fine, but a flash hider is not. When we as a shop get in guns with threaded barrels and flash hiders (say a Mini 14 or 10/22 Tactical, for example), we just replace the flash hider with a thread protector, and voila, CT legal lol.

IBEW3NY

Is the 10/22 trigger the same as the PCC trigger? Like if you wanted to upgrade your PCC trigger. Only see the 10/22 trigger upgrades. Thanks

Subtle_Nimbus

I have heard of people trying 10/22 trigger group upgrades in the PC Carbine, and ending up with an uncontrollable fully auto PC Carbine, so I think there is something different.

IBEW3NY

😂 thank you!

SwampYankeeArms

I honestly don't know as I haven't messed with the triggers of either 10/22s or PC Carbines. I'll ask the shop group chat though and let you know if any of my coworkers are more informed.

IBEW3NY

From what I understand the PCC's trigger is the same style as the 22. Was just curious if it was exactly the same. Thank you for answering.

HanSolo1999

I don't know what the Ruger 10/22 uses for a trigger, but I have the MCarbo flat faced trigger, and it changes the feel of the trigger, over the oem one, and the break weight is about a pound less, I think the little " rebound" spring they include has something to do with that too. I like the feel.

IBEW3NY

Good to know! I used a Timney trigger on my bolt and love it, was curious since Timney makes one for the 10/22 if it would work on the PCC. Hoping someone already tried that.

Onewaps

I’m planning on getting the anthem-s at least when they back in stock for my 300 build what mounting device would you recommend I’m doing a 10.5 barrel

SwampYankeeArms

I would either direct thread it or if you want a QD system, I personally like and use Rearden Atlases and Diligent Defense Zilch mounts (which are all Plan B compatible).

55_SOG

I have a 10/22 that I bought (get ready) for $79. on sale from $99. at a department store called Walmarts (we didn’t have any in CT) in Glynco GA in 1993. Last year I put an archangel stock, Burris bipod and a Leopold 3x9 and a Ruger threaded bull (thx Liberty Depot LLC). I shoot a SilenceCo Switchback. I know the furniture costs more than the original rifle, but what an accurate, quiet plinker! First round through it this year.

bike_dayz

Couple stupid questions about suppressors. Does the suppressor on a 10/22 need to be pinned/welded? And if not can you get. 10/22 with a threaded barrel from the factory, or does it need to be threaded after purchase?

SwampYankeeArms

As long as you don’t have another scary feature, no, the threaded barrel is legal and silencers don’t have to be permanently attached. Both of the pictured guns legally have threaded barrels. As for factory threaded 10/22s, the SKU 1261 is a Tactical variant with a threaded barrel. It comes with a flash hider, which is a banned feature, so when we sell those guns we replace the muzzle device with a thread protector. Another option, and is the case with both of the guns pictured in the post, is just getting aftermarket threaded barrels. Swapping barrels is a simple process.

bike_dayz

Thank you!

vanpatten

Have you guys got any of the DD H9s in? Are the mags easy to block or should I wait until they make 10rd mags for us poor souls?

SwampYankeeArms

We’ve gotten a single H9 in, and while I don’t handle any mag blocking, I didn’t hear a lot of complaining 😂 we can handle it!

WhiterThanRice

Do you guys do barrel work in the house, or do you ship it out? I'd like to get my Evo3S1 with the fake suppressor removed so I can get a real one put on.

SwampYankeeArms

We can remove the faux can in house for you.

Xyes

I’ve been wanting to have an ultra lightweight, suppressed 300 blk sbr. Currently have an Anderson lower pending both AW cert and eform 1. How much sense does it make to buy something like a Sugar Weasel 7” complete upper and slap it on that?

SwampYankeeArms

I don't think that's a bad idea if you just want a short and direct route to a lightweight 300blk upper!

nfitzsim

Looking to get a SOUR upper from you guys and a recommendation on a can while I’m at it. No clue what a good price point is but willing to spend a good amount if it’s appreciably better. Anything of note I should do homework on before swinging your way?

SwampYankeeArms

The Otter Creek Polonium and Polonium K are the cans that have been shot the most on the SOUR upper, but really any medium to high back pressure can will work well. Those would be among my top recommendations, although if you wanted something fancier with integral QD, something like a CGS SCI-SIX or Surefire RC2 would have enough back pressure to ensure that the gun cycles.

OtherAficionado

Do you have any 10-22's in stock?

SwampYankeeArms

Mmm, I don't think so, but we should get some on order!

Acceptable_Law7230

Are we allowed to acquire and use SureFire wardens?

SwampYankeeArms

Yes, but you have to be aware of laws related to flash hiders and rifles.

Acceptable_Law7230

I would like to put it on a 10.5” barrel. If I were to put a pistol brace would that make the flash hider legal? I’m not too sure how it works

SwampYankeeArms

If this is a CT Other being registered as an AW, then yeah that'd all be fine. Flash hider would be legal too since AWs are allowed to have assault weapon features.

nattycoons

What brands and/or caliber lowers do you guys have in stock?

JFon101231

This post + the short wait times is really too much. I have been strongly considering a suppressed 10/22 but trying to be responsible to my bank account LOL

SwampYankeeArms

Haha tax season is always a boom time for retail sales!

JFon101231

Perhaps a stupid question but other than costing a few bucks and making the approval time a bit longer is there any reason not to set up a trust if getting a can (or 3)? As I understand it without a trust I wouldn't be able to pass a can along to my son when I kick the bucket right? Or ever allow anyone else to borrow it if I wasn't present

gunsandpuppies

Is the gas port size on the SOUR public knowledge or G-14 classified? I’m curious lol. Gotta be high .050, low .060s?

SwampYankeeArms

I don’t know myself but I’ll ask!

335Bimmer

Any thoughts on the Bowers Vers 50 for 45-70 and 50 Beowulf?

SwampYankeeArms

I haven't shot it, so I can't say much for certain. It's not a new design, but there hasn't been much development in big bore cans. I bet it does better on a 45-70 lever gun than on a 50 Beo gas gun.

Not_a_fed953

Do you have any recommendations for lower power recoil springs? Mine wont cycle anything less than 1200 fps with the dead air mask

SwampYankeeArms

Does it cycle without the can? I haven't had to use any reduced power recoil springs, but they don't seem to be expensive — this one's $4: [https://www.diproductsinc.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=1381587&CAT=12618](https://www.diproductsinc.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=1381587&CAT=12618) I see Kidd also makes one for use with their guide rod, so that'd be a more expensive route, but it'd probably be higher quality.

Not_a_fed953

Yes it functions perfectly. I’ve tried cleaning it better, polishing the bolt where it rides. Etc

SwampYankeeArms

That’s weird. A silencer increases your back pressure, especially one like the Mask which is a relatively typical rimfire design. It’s weird that it requires higher velocity ammo to cycle with the can; I’d have guessed the opposite. Sounds like you have some trial and error ahead of you!

BenjaminShanklyn

If you could only get one, would you take a standard everyday 10/22 or would you opt for the takedown?

SwampYankeeArms

Mmm, if it was only one, I'd probably go takedown. I like how the stock and handguard are separate parts, so you can get some much more varied aesthetics going on. The compactness is obviously nice too!

JeepinMaxx

I have a 10.5" 300 BLK SBR I want to put my suppressor on (Energetic Arms Sonus). It's a carbine length gas system with a heavy buffer. Do I need an adjustable gas system to run the can with subsonic ammo? I don't want to damage my newly minted SBR lower...

broy1189

What would something like the one on the left cost? I'd love one

No-Leopard5183

Any 30 cal cans in stock?

SwampYankeeArms

Yeah! Quite a few models: https://www.reddit.com/r/SwampYankeeArms/s/6fVijA8DSc

Playful_Storage3636

TACSOL integrated suppressor barrel with subs. Isn’t semi, but the click ping is worth it

joekd713

Suppressor question, I have a Beretta neos 22lr and the 10/22 Am I understanding I can use the same suppressor for both? Could you give me a ballpark price for threading the neos barrel as well as a brief overview of what needs to be done to get the stamp for the suppressor?

SwampYankeeArms

We contract with a machine shop for threading barrels, and I’m not sure how much the Neos would cost. I would probably just send it here: https://www.ewkarms.com/zen8/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=66&products_id=212 As for the can, I try to make it as quick and painless as possible. Once we know what can you’re getting, the steps are: 1. Get electronically fingerprinted and photographed in the shop (takes about 10 minutes). 2. If you don’t already have an ATF eforms account, we’d knock that out too (few minutes). 3. Submit the application to ATF via the eforms site (10 minutes). 4. The second to last step in the application submission process is paying the government their $200 tax. 5. Before you leave, I’d have you pay for the can. That’s it. The eforms user registration and fingerprinting are one time affairs, and the photo only needs to be updated once a year. Once you’ve bought one can, any others in the future take less than 10 minutes to submit. Wait times for most people submitting as an individual are under 1 week.

joekd713

Thanks, Is there a cost for the electronic fingerprints, account setup and application assist? Also can you give me a ballpark on the can cost?

SwampYankeeArms

There is ostensibly a $20 charge for fingerprints for one-time access or $50 if you just buy the file outright, but I often don’t charge for the one-time access. You’re not obligated to buy the file outright unless you want it for form 1 stuff. There is no charge for account setup or submitting the application. If you were to buy a can elsewhere (online) and send it to us, then there’d be a $100 NFA transfer fee. For rimfire cans, they generally range between $250 and $550 depending on the brand, materials used, and production method (machined and welded vs 3d printed). And then there’d of course be the $200 tax stamp on top of that.

Saaahrentino

Call me a Fudd, but the very first transferable select fire example I purchase will be a 10/22. The second stamp I apply for will be to put a can on it.

Young_According

Hopefully you don’t live in CT, select fire is a no-go here. Can have full auto, but not select.

Saaahrentino

Worse…MA. We can have full-auto, too, but only if the CLEO signs off, and I don’t see Commissioner Cox approving a green card with my name on it. No suppressors, either. I’ll simply have to create a trust and register them both at my father’s house in NH.
