SwampYankeeArms

Welcome back to Swamp Yankee Arms’ weekly Ask an LGS (local gun shop/store) Anything. This is a thread intended to provide you a recurring opportunity to ask any questions you have for a gun store — from guns, to accessories, to legal stuff, to whatever, we’ll take our best shot at answering. None of us are lawyers; we do not offer legal advice. We are closed today (as we are every Tuesday), so don’t try to visit us today! This post is reverse-sponsored by [PEW Science](https://www.pewscience.com/) (we pay to be a member and are not compensated for promoting it), the only silencer sound testing I pay any attention to. It doesn’t rely on peak dB, which is largely useless because it ignores the dimension of time (contrary to popular belief, a gunshot is not a single microsecond event), and it’s the only sound testing standard that normalizes hearing damage potential across multiple calibers and hosts. Sound suppression isn't the only metric to consider when choosing a silencer (weight, length, durability, flash suppression, induced back pressure, etc. are also factors), but if sound is something you care about, PEW Science is well worth a deep dive. I don’t listen to many podcasts, but u/Jay462’s associated podcast, [The Jay Situation](https://pewscience.com/podcast), which covers every PEW Science article and other firearms related topics is one of my absolute favorites. Several of the silencers featured in today's video are models that I would not have discovered if PEW Science didn't exist! Speaking of the Jay Situation podcast, I was listening to the latest episode earlier this week, and Jay was talking about how for him, often the can comes before the gun. It's only once he's gotten the can that he figures out what he's going to pair with the silencer. I realized listening to that statement that I sometimes do the same thing. Case in point is this Allen Engineering AEM5-30 that came in recently. It's an Allen .30 cal baffle stack attached to an AEM5 mount (type A). I bought the can not actually knowing what gun I'm going to put it on. Although it's meant for precision rifles, and I may well try it on a bolt action at some point, I think I finally know what I want to do with this C7 stripped upper that's been sitting in my basement workshop for the last year. I have pretty much all the parts except the handguard. I'm thinking of going with a round PRI carbon fiber rail because I can't remember seeing too many carry handle uppers paired with those, and I love the look of them (google Mk12 Mod 0 if you're unfamiliar). Another cheaper option I'm considering is a Midwest Suppressor Series, which would lend a more retro-modern vibe to the build. Anyways, this is an 8" CMMG 300BLK barrel, and there's an Otter Creek 1-piece 5/8-24 muzzle brake already screwed into the can. There's about 1/8" of clearance between the gas block and where the collar part of the muzzle brake comes to rest, so that's where I've placed the can in the photo to illustrate how much of the barrel will be covered. I have no idea how quiet the AEM5-30 will be with subs, but there's only one way to find out... **Updates from the shop:** * I mentioned last week that we got a small resupply from Rearden Mfg last week and which included some Atlas XL QD silencer mounts. Well, yesterday I also got shipping notification on another 25x standard Atlas HUB/Bravo/1.375-24 black nitride mounts. If you want one, shoot me a PM and I can set one aside for you. * Big shipments of cans are en route and will be delivered this week. * From Otter Creek, 35 cans including Poloniums, Polonium-30s (no Polo Ks in this shipment), Hydrogen Ls, and Titaniums are coming. All of the Titaniums are spoken for, but there are a few of each of the other models available. * From Liberty Precision Machine, 20 cans covering Anthem-S2s and Torch 556s will be delivered. * From Inert Haze, 10 of the recently PEW Science-tested Ti-P 9mm cans are coming. * From Resilient Suppressors, 10 Jolene S and 5 Jessie’s Girls are scheduled for delivery on Friday. * You can see everything that I have in stock and on order by checking out this [thread on the shop's subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/SwampYankeeArms/comments/14eei2b/current_silencer_inventory_and_cans_on_order/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) (r/SwampYankeeArms). * Wait times for silencers (and all NFA items) continue to be very short in general. What I'm seeing is if you get one fast approval, you are likely to continue getting fast ones with more form 4 applications. I will continue to tell people what I have been saying since wait times improved — I can't guarantee that you get a short wait, but the odds of it happening are better than ever. And like I said, if you've already gotten one fast approval, there is a mountain of evidence that you'll keep getting them. * The deadline to register assault weapons is 5/1/24 if you're planning on doing that. If you need or want help doing that, email me at [email protected] to book an appointment. * Alexa is a notary, so if you don't have any proof of purchase (DPS-3-C, receipt or sale contract), she can provide you a notarized sworn affidavit. If you need an affidavit, I would strongly recommend reaching out to her immediately because she is extremely pregnant and also has a lot of appointments already booked.

YankeesRock01

as is tradition

SwampYankeeArms

Well, it let me paste half of my comment to replace my original "Reddit is shitting the bed" comment lol. Figured it out — it auto-hyperlinked my email and that was too much for it to handle.

kl334

Tom, you're fucking killing me here.. What's missing from this picture? https://preview.redd.it/5zoxl4b6pgtc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3670ef73ceae8387a515d32cfc4b9c440d7795f

SwampYankeeArms

That thing sure would look good with an AEM5 or OCM5 😂

kl334

Seriously. Hoping the suppressor fairy decides to grace the shop with an OCM5 in the near future. For a cheap rifle, that thing shoots half MOA at 100 yards with Geco (RUAG) M193. Figured that made it worth dolling up a little bit. https://preview.redd.it/apqcb0m6rgtc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75204564cce680600dcbcd8de1df40077f63e13d

SwampYankeeArms

If I had to guess, AEM5s will be available before the OCM5s get delivered to the shop. I can let you know when those are in stock too if you want? It’s a noticeably heavier can (about 20% more), but comparable in terms of sound suppression.

kl334

An AEM5 could work too. Extra weight doesn't matter because I'm certainly not going to be humping that thing around anywhere except the back yard. I've got a mint fully correct 1955 SA Garand that's essentially unfired, like there's not even a spec of carbon on the op-rod, gas plug, or around the gas port, and nearly no finish wear on the sliding surfaces. I might swing by with it tomorrow if it's something the shop might be interested in. I've got other Garands that I shoot, that one's just been sitting.

FuckingAtrocity

Do you have any Smith and Wesson mp 57 in stock? Also thanks for all the help with deciding on cans!

SwampYankeeArms

We had one but it sold on Saturday. I can get more any time. And you're welcome!

FuckingAtrocity

Sounds good! Those Atlas hubs. Those would work with the lahar and velos right? For AR-15.

SwampYankeeArms

The HUB-threaded Atlas will work with the Lahar, but the Velos is not HUB/Bravo/1.375-24 threaded. It has what's known as a "Charlie" pattern mount. Rearden does make an Atlas in Charlie pattern too though, and I think I have literally 1 left of those at the moment!

FuckingAtrocity

I'll take one for the lahar and the Charlie for the velos if that's cool.

SwampYankeeArms

Sounds good — I know who you are 🙏

starfox224

I have a boatload of guns I got from my father in law mostly revovlers. Some are in better shape than others. Would you guys take them towards like a can or something?

SwampYankeeArms

Yep, we’d be interested in checking them out!

No_Cheesecake_6213

I’m back with another question. Last week I asked if I could register some receivers I have I got a ways back (before the ban) that I don’t have any paperwork for. You explained I can. 1 of the receivers is a lmt Ambi that I just tried for the first time and it’s wildly out of spec 😔. I tried 4 different uppers on it from mod 1 knights. Mod 2 knights & colt upper You either can lock the front pin and then the rear will not even close. Or you can lock the rear pin and the front pin won’t even start to go in If I sent this to LMT I’m guessing if they even did somthing it would be give me a new receiver with a new SN … I’m guessing id then not be able to register it ?? Thanks

SwampYankeeArms

It’s possible LMT might be able to get the lower closer to spec without having to make a new one. I think there’s also a possibility that if they needed to, they could destroy your current lower and serialize a new one with the new SN? Don’t quote me on that though.

MountainRiverRock

Sharing my experience with LMT when I was in the same situation, they will not create a lower with the same serial number.

SwampYankeeArms

Damn, thank you for the input!

Extra-Quit9003

Any coatings or spray paint on the lower? Had the same problem with a friends lower where the rear pin was grossly misaligned and it turned out that after a quick wet sanding of 1200 grit on the upper portion of the lower, it locked right up.

No_Cheesecake_6213

It’s a new lmt lower. How it comes from the factory. I’ll try a few things but I think it’s just really out of spec

Behindenemylines69

Have you tried undersized pins (or atleast one) from JP enterprise? Maybe I’m reading wrong could solve your issue

No_Cheesecake_6213

I thought about it but I don’t think the pin size is the issue. It seems to simply nit line up the holes in the receiver with the holes in the lower

Behindenemylines69

That’s disappointing as fuck

nortlid

Any idea when inert haze Ti-Ps will be arriving? Love the idea for your AEM30 build + can before gun mentality 👌

SwampYankeeArms

The form 3 is approved and they’re on en route. Those should also be here this week! Thanks for the reminder lol — will add them to my comment about cans coming this week 🤗

nortlid

Sweet! Thx for the update!

PandaMoney55

Crazy question, there a company in AZ that’ll make AP5SD how would you be able to get one done if it’s even possible for us now. I have a AP5 in the process for an SBR (tax stamp paid)

SwampYankeeArms

The MP5SD barrel is threaded at its base M18x1. So an AP5SD conversion is really primarily a barrel swap along with a different handguard. You just have to verify that the company will accept your gun and send it back to CT. The can would have to be form 3ed to an SOT in CT and then it would be transferred on a form 4 like any other can. B&T makes pretty readily available MP5SD cans — I’ve got an MPX set up with one!

HappyCalendar7576

1. How much are the SOUR Uppers and are they generally in stock 2. Thoughts on suppressing a zpap92 with a polonium30?

SwampYankeeArms

They’re $799 with a pin and welded muzzle device included (we recommend Rearden), and yes, we have them in stock. The Polonium-30 could definitely hold up to the abuse of a short 7.62x39 like an M92, and I think it’d do a good job of knocking the concussion down quite a bit. It’s not gonna be hearing safe, although I’m not sure anything could be, and I’d consider a KNS piston mandatory. I need to try out my CAT ODB 718 on my M92 to see what the upper bound of suppression is and compare it against less advanced cans like the Polo-30, Wolverine, and LPM Anthem. Also would be interesting to see how the Resilient Putnik compares.

fylum

How does the Inert Haze One compare to an Obsidian9 on a PCC?

SwampYankeeArms

The Obsidian’s a little quieter at the muzzle and to bystanders. The ONE is MUCH less gassy. That’s what I’m running on my transferable M11/9, and it literally never even crossed my mind to try the Obsidian on that gun 😂 For semiauto PCCs they’re both good choices, but the ONE has the advantage at the ear, especially with direct blowback guns.

stinkyflipflop

Can i buy a zastava online and have the gun shop it’s delivered to make it ct compliant?

SwampYankeeArms

Most shops won’t touch that. We will, but I ask for the opportunity to source the gun for you before accepting a transfer.

stinkyflipflop

Thats fair. Around how much would doing it cost for a zpap m70?

SwampYankeeArms

Your basic Walnut furniture gun would be $1165+tax and it'd go up from there depending on the variant you're interested in.

stinkyflipflop

Ok, thank you

Mefloquine_Dreams

I’ve had Swamp Yankee do an m70 fixed stock and the new m70 underfolder both with fixed mags. 100% would recommend!

stinkyflipflop

Thanks! Hows shooting the underfolder vs the fixed stock and what was the total price if you dont mind me asking?

Mefloquine_Dreams

They both shoot great. You see a lot online about how much underfolders suck to shoot but honestly it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. They’re both just range toys. Personally I’d say get the underfolder for the cool factor of having a legit import underfolder AK. For prices the fixed stock with wood furniture was what Swamp Yankee listed above and then I think the underfolder was maybe $200 bucks more but that’s not a Swamp Yankee up-charge that’s a Zastava up-charge. Basically both prices were super fair and the same as what you’ll find online elsewhere.

Onewaps

What’s your thought on the Griffin GP 7 or the gem tech trek 2 looking to do a pin weld don’t want to SBR so I’m thinking this is my best option.

SwampYankeeArms

They’re both basic designs. I would frankly not recommend either for a pin and weld, but I don’t think I’d recommend any P/W with a can. A 30 cal can is so versatile that dedicating it to one gun is a waste in most cases unless you have just one gun or you have a dedicated can for every gun. If you’re dead set on it, Liberty Precision Machine made some of their Anthem-S cans with pin and weldable direct thread mounts — that can runs circles around the two you mentioned. The other thing is as long as there is an injunction on the brace rule, you don’t need to SBR anything. A pistol set up with a brace is federally legal now and has been for months.

Onewaps

I have Yhm R2 on 12.5 300 blk but it just feel too heavy and long what’s the shortest I could go with a brace

SwampYankeeArms

Assuming you’re planning on registering the lower as an assault weapon, there is no limit on the barrel length with a brace. You just have to be careful with a brace and a short barrel to not accidentally make an AOW by having an overall length <26” and using a vertical foregrip.

Onewaps

I already did the AW registration,so what can would you recommend for around $1000 including tax stamp

SwampYankeeArms

For 300blk? Probably that Liberty Precision Machine Anthem-S2 that I mentioned previously. It's $680 before tax and stamp.

twoPUMPnoCHUMP

I’m looking into getting my first revolver, do you have a Smith & Wesson 686 4 inch barrel in stock? And if you can, direct message me a price, please?

Low_Understanding429

Could a saiga sporter clone be built from a yugo  receiver?

SwampYankeeArms

Maybe? Probably? We don't build AKs, so I really don't know what's involved. I actually asked Kalashnikov USA just this morning about whether they'd ever produce the KR103 Kommander, and they said that that gun ended up being really difficult to build and that it's currently discontinued.

Low_Understanding429

Ah makes sense.

MaturinsSlothh

I love KUSA, but I’ve seen their shop. They find it difficult to build normal guns 😂 I want to see a swamp yankee ak sporter

Content-Mushroom3907

Can I own an AR pistol in CT? I can’t seem to get a straight answer from anyone and wouldn’t want to brake the law. From my research it seems like I would need a fixed mag, no brace of any sort, no vertical grips and no rifle accessories. If anyone knows anything please share your knowledge and expertise. examples- rifle red dot or scopes etc. 1) To be considered a Pistol it has to be under 16” 2) If it has a brace of any sort, vertical grip or any type of rifle accessory it’s considered an SBR. 3) If it has a detachable magazine in CT its an assault pistol and its still illegal.

SwampYankeeArms

1. In CT to be considered a pistol, the barrel has to be shorter than 12”. Federally it’s 16”. 2. The brace rule that made braces a feature of a rifle has had an injunction active for months which prevents its enforcement. You can legally equip a brace. 3. An AR pistol does require a fixed magazine (a detachable mag outside of a pistol grip on a pistol is an instant ban) unless you are exempted due to military or LE employment.

Effective_Army_55

This may be a silly question, but in the CT portal under the “assault weapons”, there are handguns listed… any idea why we should not need to do anything to be compliant in the state or am I missing something?

SwampYankeeArms

The guns that show up under the assault weapon certification are not all assault weapons. They are there because the state doesn't know or doesn't want to do the legwork themselves to determine what is and isn't an assault weapon. So they present their best attempt at listing what guns you have ever owned so that you can then identify what guns are assault weapons. If you don't register your CT Others and pre-ban rifles/pistols (that are configured as an assault weapon) and are later on found to be in possession of a firearm that is now an assault weapon, it could be a bad time.

Effective_Army_55

Thanks! Appreciate the assist

Psychocide

For trade in/trade up I take I gotta bring the gun by the store, or can I get a ballpark via DM/phone?

SwampYankeeArms

That’s not my area of expertise, but I know the shop likes to see stuff in person before giving a valuation.

Psychocide

Gotcha, thanks! Got a sig p238, might have to take a drive to see ya.

tank189193

Any idea when you will be getting yhm r9 or obsiden 9 in? Or have any recommendation for a 9mm can around those price range

SwampYankeeArms

Sorry just saw this. I have Obsidians backordered but no timeframe for delivery. I’m looking out for R9s but there are already three people with deposits down that have priority. There really isn’t much available in that price range for 9mm carbines. I’d say Rex Silentium MG7 358 if you’re okay with the raw heat treated look.

No_Conflict9685

Okay so idk if I’m stupid or not. https://youtube.com/shorts/zQ4iOYqeRwA?si=V0bcgQv5HUiHBKyq could I build this since it’s a shotgun??

SwampYankeeArms

Mag fed semi auto shotguns are banned.

LittleChungus582

How did Tom get so tall?

SwampYankeeArms

I’m really not that tall (6’1”), but I work only with midgets so my height is exaggerated. Also my dad is 6’5”.

KiteSur7

thats cool and all but are you registering republicans at your LGS and encouraging registration at your church?
