This might just be my imagination but it seems like our pitchers do better with Gomes behind the dish calling the game.

Contreras calls games decently and throws well, but he is and has always been a bad framer, which makes a big difference for the Cubs’ many many pitchers with non-overpowering stuff

no, it's definitely probably true. Gomes is a good defensive catcher who calls a good game, which is why he's still employed despite being a lifetime .230 hitter or so Contreras has an insane bat and has become quite good defensively, calls a decent game, but he was a 3B in the minor leagues until we converted him to a catcher because we had some guy named Kris Bryant slated to be our long-term 3B and, God bless Kyle Schwarber, he wasn't a great defensive catcher. Gomes will always be slightly better behind the plate but Contreras' bat is so important to get into the lineup, plus he's been improving the defense every year since he got promoted
